Recently postal workers and friends banded together to hold a rally in my hometown of Windsor Heights, Iowa. Well over 200 people came together to say "Hell no to taking the United States Postal Service private!" They lined Hwy. 6 or Hickman Road holding signs and hearing so many vehicles honk in solidarity. Yes, there were speakers and one was Herb Copley the President of the Iowa State Association of Letter Carriers, AFL-CIO. I sat down with Herb who had some interesting things to say about the "service of postal workers". He also blew away the myth that the USPS receives taxpayer support. It does not. Meet Herb Copley: Thanks for listening! The award winning Insight on Business the News Hour with Michael Libbie is the only weekday business news podcast in the Midwest. As expected the Central Bank left interest rates alone and Chairman Jerome Powell told us...why. This is the Business News Headlines for Wednesday the 7th day of May, thanks for being with us. In other news, Disney profits soar and that has an impact on the markets. It seems the more President Trump talks about tariffs the more confusing it gets. Missouri made the news and it has to do with selling stock or real estate. We'll share the Wall Street Report and the FAA is about to spend billions to upgrade air traffic control…we are told. For the conversation I'm joined by Herb Copley the president of the Iowa National Association of Letter Carriers, AFL-CIO. It all has to do with privatizing the postal service and some amazing facts we suspect you don't know. Let's go Thanks for listening! This week, we're taking a more national focus, and checking in with the National Association of Letter Carriers, who have been embroiled in a years-long contract negotiation with the US Postal Service. In our episode today, I'm sitting down with Melissa Rakestraw, member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 825 in Chicago, IL, to discuss the state of negotiations with our nation's letter carriers, the unprecedented rejection of the recent Tentative Agreement and what happens next, and what would happen if the US Postal Service was privatized. As a short editorial note before we begin, the interest arbitration process between USPS and the Letter Carriers began on March 17th, with Dennis R. Nolan set as the neutral arbitrator. This episode was recorded at the end of February, before those dates had been set. Postal workers are also set to hit the streets this weekend–“Fight Like Hell!” rallies are scheduled for March 23 across the country to protest the proposed privatization of the US Postal Service. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's plummeting approval rating, Hannity's sit down with the Trump/Musk regime, Trump's government funding freeze, Trump's support for Russia, Trump's agency raids, Trump's cabinet confirmations, record credit card debt, dropping homicide rates, Brazil's systems of political accountability, and Kansas' gender-affirming care ban, before watching Elon and Trump blatantly lie about their cost-cutting efforts on Hannity. Elizabeth Pancotti then joins, giving us an even more expansive view into the failures of the Musk/Trump regime to actually weed out the “$1 trillion” in “waste, fraud, and abuse” they claim to be going after, with the alleged $55 billion in progress they've made so far undermined by the fact it's only $8 million, before touching on the problem of relying on legal and constitutional strategies after decades of conservatives packing our courts. Expanding on this latter point, Pancotti and Emma dive deep into the Democratic Party's – particularly leadership's – ongoing failure to appropriately message the threat and devastation posed by the Musk/Trump regime, with a refusal to highlight the efforts to cut YOUR benefits and steal YOUR data to give more money and more power to the wealthiest man in the world and his billionaire buddies, not to mention their long-lasting refusal to present an alternative affirmative vision to this ideology of destruction. Tyler Vasseur then walks Emma through the recent decision by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to step down from his post, exploring DeJoy's nomination under Trump 1.0 to spearhead an effort to privatize the USPS, Biden's decision to keep him on, and why it was his failure to privatize fast enough that led him to get pushed out, and what that could mean for the future of the institution. Next, Vasseur dives deep into the National Association of Letter Carrier's historic “No” vote on a contract with USPS after nearly two years of negotiations, highlighting various failures in the agreement, including keeping wages in line with inflation. After expanding on the “Vote No” campaign efforts, Tyler unpacks why their biggest push in this bargaining process is for the right to strike, with the ongoing bargaining effort now lasting well over 600 days, wrapping up the show by highlighting coming rallies to support NALC's fight. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by RM Brown as they talk with a 412 caller about his experience with a Democratic polling group, unpack the astonishingly pro-Israel history of Russell Brand, and explore the truly atrocious messaging on display by Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. Molly from Brooklyn discusses teaching journalism in the age of Trump and AI, Dylan from Atlanta touches on a new democratized social media project, and the MR Team looks at the most recent data disproving the right-wing crime narrative of the last two years, plus, your calls and IMs! We're still drinking from the firehose of labor news this week with another massive episode. We start with some headlines on AI in healthcare, a class action lawsuit against Apple, and follow ups with DC restaurant workers, Indian Samsung workers, and Teamsters at CostCo. In our first main story we check in on the imminent union vote at the RDU1 Amazon warehouse in Garner, NC. Workers are fighting back against the billionaire's assault on workers both at the federal and the local level, we run down some of the efforts. Once again we were so lucky to be joined by C Moline to discuss the recent rejection of the proposed contract by Letter Carriers around the country. Finally, we close celebrating the major victory by workers at Whole Foods in Philadelphia, who won the first union at the company with the UFCW. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, to discuss the tentative agreement being negotiated between the NALC and the United States Postal Service (USPS). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine's use of US-made missiles in Russia, the Gaetz report, Trump's cabinet of predators, the DNC, House and Senate politics, US arms to Israel, genocide in Gaza, Musk/Bezos v. NLRB, and the Stop Terror Financing Bill, before watching Senator George Helmy's emotional plea to the UN. Tyler Vasseur then joins, first outlining the breadth of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representation, before walking through the evolution of their ongoing fight for a fair contract, beginning with the expiration of their previous contract on May 20th, 2023 – touching on the major shortcomings of this contract's Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic and rampant inflation – and through over five hundred days of closed-door negotiations with Union Leadership, only for said leadership to announcement a new contract with a wage increase of a meager 1.3%. After diving deeper into the numbers behind this raise, Vasseur parses through the reaction of NALC members to this supposed “victory,” particularly as an anti-union Trump presidency threatens future victories, and how the rank-and-file is organizing to keep the fight for a fair contract going. He, Sam, and Emma also touch on the distinct fight NALC faces working with USPS, and the major problem of making workers, not management, responsible for keeping profits in line, before wrapping up the show by tackling what we can do to help this labor effort from the outside. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma look at the meaningful personal growth shown by folks like Markwayne Mullin and Joe Scarborough over the past year, going from openly denouncing fascists like Matt Gaetz and Donald Trump, respectively, to happily celebrating the future of their relationship to said fascists, before diving deep into the ongoing DNC implosion and what the future of the Party is likely to entail. They also give some updates on Rudy Giuliani's legal woes, talk with Joshua from CT about RFK's insane MAHA agenda and with A-Squared about progressive turnout, and tackle the importance of labeling fascists “fascist,” and Nazis “nazi,” plus, your calls and IMs! Happy Monday! Sam speaks with Grace Blakeley, English economics & politics commentator, staff writer at Tribune, to discuss her recent book Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom. First, Sam runs through updates on the final 14 days before the US presidential election, Israel's ongoing assault on Palestine and potential pivot to Iran, environmental disaster in Cuba, Elon Musk's failures and fraud in his work alongside the Trump campaign, National Association of Letter Carriers' labor news, Tesla's regulatory problems, and the US economy, before diving a little deeper into the insanity of Elon Musk launching contrasting ad campaigns in Michigan attempting to stoke anti-Semitic and Islamophobic fears in Muslim and Jewish communities. Grace Blakeley then joins, first working to unpack the commonly accepted dichotomy between capitalism and a centrally-planned (socialist) economy, with the dystopia of socialism juxtaposed by liberalism's vision of free-market democracy, before wading into the problems and inaccuracies of this binary, namely the fact that liberalism's defining qualities (free-markets and democracy) don't apply to the existing capitalist societies of today (particularly the largest imperial powers like the US and UK), where wealth and political power are becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer elites, translating into what is essentially centrally-planned oligarchy. Blakeley steps back to walk through the evolution of capitalism to this point, tackling neoliberals' work to publically redefine a libertarian “free market” as a return to natural systems, while elites privately saw it as an explicit vision to protect corporate power amid rising social movements, establishing clear economic norms against anything that could threaten privatization, the free movement of capital, and low tax rates, while creating international institutions (backed by the West) to dole out punishment for any revolutionary states that sought to challenge them abroad, before touching on the contrasting work of a Keynesian vision – backed by the working class – that pushed the idea of a protective state and well-regulated markets, and exploring the major success this ideology had in bolstering the US labor movement of the mid-20th Century. Next, Grace walks Sam through the eventual success of neoliberal theory with the regimes of Pinochet, Thatcher, and Reagan in the late 1970s and early '80s, and their overwhelming work to crush and fragment the working class and social power that had bolstered the social and economic progress of the century to that point, setting the stage for the solidification of the oligarchies we see today. After briefly touching on the value of a return to a more Keynesian vision for economies, and the central importance of revitalizing working-class power, Berkeley wraps up the interview by exploring a few other visions for strong, democratic, and worker-led economies. And in the Fun Half: Sam unpacks Trump's most recent insult to workers (and whether that will even translate past the absurdity of it), and Elon Musk's ongoing fraudulent and stochastic canvassing work for the Trump campaign. Obama walks through Trump's extensive effort to undermine the US' capacity to respond to pandemics, and Jim Breuer does… something… but it's definitely racist. The MR Team also talks with John from TBurg about Ohio's Issue 1, Matt from Tennessee about the moral monstrosity that is Richie Torres, and Noah from Nashville on Harris and the Left, plus, your calls and IMs! Rick is an educator, a leader, and a wonderful speaker. He hosts a weekly Zoom meeting called "Coffee with Letter Carriers," which covers educational topics. He also has a back catalog of podcasts that focus mainly on the NALC's political activities. Rick and I discuss the value of training and education, and how the Post Office benefits from a properly trained work force. We also talk about what a State Association does. This episode probably has the best sound quality of any I've recorded.

We know that many union conventions are just pageants and not much of substance is discussed or debated. This will not be the case at the NALC convention in Boston next week. With the Letter Carriers' going 400 days under an expired contract, many are upset with current leadership. Corey Walton breaks it down for us. Additionally, IUPAT talks to us about organizing they have in Huntsville. In OVERTIME, we take a look at the results of the ALU elections. We also respond to some silly things that Richard Hanania said about unions. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Tyler Vasseur, letter carrier and shop steward in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), Branch 9, to discuss his recent piece in Labor Notes entitled "Momentum for Open Bargaining Grows in the Letter Carriers." Then, Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect, to discuss his recent piece outlining the new FTC rule regarding non-compete clauses, co-authored with Luke Goldstein. First, Sam runs through updates on escalating violence by police and Zionists against anti-war protesters, Netanyahu's imminent invasion of Rafah, the Federal Reserve, Biden drug policy, state abortion bans, New York's special election for Congress, Johnson and Johnson's talc settlement, and labor rights, before watching Mike Johnson and Marjorie Taylor Greene trade shots ahead of a potential motion to vacate the Speakership. Tyler Vasseur then joined, first outlining NALC's union structure and role as one of four postal unions, before exploring the progressive division between the unions – including the desynchronization of their contracts – under the US' shift into neoliberalism at the end of the 20th Century. Expanding on this, Vasseur explores the concept of “open bargaining,” and what it would mean in terms of activating and mobilizing NALC's base of workers, as well as creating a much more transparent negotiating process. After walking through the major forces driving NALC members' attempt at reform, and touching on the major roles of the US pre-funding mandate for the USPS and the 2008 Financial crisis in crippling industry wages, Tyler wraps up with the inspiring factor of the ongoing union renaissance in the US, and how this project has already begun to reshape organizing efforts within NALC. David Dayen and Sam then look to the absurd evolution of the “non-compete” contract clause, first popularized as a tool to prevent the spread of company secrets among executives, and now used to constrain some 30 million workers in industries from dog grooming to fast food. After expanding on the expansive chunk of our economy crippled by non-compete clauses, David walks us through the ongoing legal battle to overturn the bipartisan ban, how the legacy of Antonin Scalia looms large over this topic, and why the Supreme Court's bogus “Major Questions” Doctrine is central to these arguments. After expanding on the likely evolution of this court battle, Dayen wraps up with a brief update on Live Nation's attempt to court DC insiders with some help from the free (but evidently not priceless) press. And in the Fun Half: Sam parses through yesterday's mass escalation of violence against anti-war student protesters on college campuses across the US, with the NYPD sending a SWAT team to infiltrate the Student occupation of Harold Hall, and police in LA allowing a pro-Israel violent mob assault UCLA protesters, also expanding on the absurd and constant attempts to completely misrepresent these campus protests and the student activists behind them. Jose from Houston calls in with some updates on union business in the transport industry, Marcus from Huntington Beach explores the MAGA takeover of his local government and how to push back, Charlie Kirk shames Zionists for not thinking their grand Jewish conspiracy would come back around to hurt them, and Cory from Florida shares his experiences with the constraints of non-compete clauses. Dave Rubin floats his theory on the jihadists behind public health, and Paul Bet David admonishes a Columbia Student for not knowing NYU's investment portfolio, in his leadup to platforming George Soros conspiracy, plus, your calls and IMs! Are animals self aware? Scientific evidence supports the assumption that it “feels like something” for a fish to be caught on a hook. Shawn and Leah have a bit of a lively discussion regarding animal consciousness. They talk about their dads, wedding preparations, taxes, television shows and more! Scientists and philosophers across the globe agree it is reasonable to assume the vast majority of creatures on Earth are sentient in some way — including lobster, squid and the tiny flies that swarm over drinks left outside in the summer. The New York Declaration on #Animal #Consciousness, released Friday, was signed by 39 cognition scholars at universities from Canada to Australia. It says there is “at least a realistic possibility” that all vertebrates and many invertebrates have conscious experience. The declaration rests on recent scientific studies that show garter snakes can recognize their own scent, crows can report what they see, octopi can avoid pain and fruit flies can sleep — and they sleep best when they're with other fruit flies. Also on this episode are discussions about fears, and how much work has been recently dumped onto Letter Carriers. #Television shows mentioned include #Fallout, #Crusade, #Robocop and #Star Trek Discovery. Leah and Shawn's dad started planting in the greenhouse. They sat and shared their seeds. This week's podcast promo: Cosmic Pizza
