Every Friday is FRIDAY NIGHT FIENDS during HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and today we're discussing the follow up to one of our favorite horror movies. Kirsty, Julia, Pinhead and the Lament Configuration are back and hotter than ever and we're gonna be spending a lot of time down under under the gaze of Leviathan. We're talking “HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2” from 1988 directed by Tony Randel and starring Claire Higgins, Ashley Laurence and Doug Bradley. The sultry Julia returns with the help of a sick doctor and she's leading souls into hell for her master, LEVIATHAN. Kirsty's brave ass wants to go and rescue her father and the Cenobites return with grandiose plans of torture. All the gore and eroticism work almost as well as in the original and then the last 30 minutes happen. Why did they go out like that? Still looks demented and cool but does the good outweigh the underwhelming? Hear us tell it. This movie definitely has its fans but boy does word of mouth drop off hard for the franchise after this one. Dr. Claire Higgins is a Reader (faculty) in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London. She is also President of the European Hair Research Society and Vice President of the Institute of Trichologists, a professional association for researchers who study the hair and scalp. Claire teaches and conducts research in the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. She uses skin and hair follicles as models to better understand how tissues respond to injury, heal wounds, and repair after disease. Outside of science, making pottery has been one of Claire's favorite pastimes since she took her first classes as a postdoc. She enjoys making items like bowls, vases, and lamp bases on her pottery wheel in her studio during her free time. Claire received her B.Sc. in natural sciences and her PhD in skin developmental biology from Durham University in England. Afterwards, she conducted postdoctoral research at Columbia University. She worked as an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University before joining the faculty and starting her laboratory at Imperial College London in 2014. In our interview, she shares more about her life and science.
Male pattern hair loss is something that over 80% of men will experience in their lifetime. Yet despite it being so widespread, the fundamentals of what actually causes it to occur, in the manner in which it occurs, still elude researchers to this day. According to a new paper, the secret may lie deep in our genetic past, with our embryonic origins. Dr. Claire Higgins, Reader in Tissue Regeneration from the Faculty of Engineering in the Department of Bioengineering of Imperial College London joins Jonathan to discuss.
Claire Higgins is reader in the department of bioengineering at Imperial College London. Her philosophy of science involves a problem-solving approach to research, where she models tissue growth, development, and repair using human skin and hair follicles. In their latest work, her research team transplanted hair follicles into human skin scars in an attempt to make that tissue healthy again. In this episode, Iris Kulbatski from The Scientist's Creative Services Team spoke with Higgins to learn more about how she takes an engineering-inspired, problem-solving approach to her research. To learn more about Higgins's research, check out this article. Science Philosophy in a Flash is a series of mini podcasts produced by The Scientist's Creative Services Team. With a focus on the people behind the science, this podcast highlights researchers' unique outlook on what motivates their pursuit of science and what it means to be a scientist.

Come to daddy and solve that puzzle box because we're revelling in the queer, cosmic horror of Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987)! Tagging in for the discussion is returning guest (and Hellraiser franchise super fan) Bryan Christopher, who we can only assume is a masochist at heart.Join us as we go all in on the queer subtext that Barker injects into his directorial debut before heaping all the praise on Claire Higgins' performance as the complex Julia Cotton. There will be discussions of BDSM and consent, the torture porn label that is unfairly applied to the film, and all things Cenobites.Plus: Frank's precious goo, shoulder pads for days, one rude-ass nurse, an angry pet store lady, and the ultimate question: why aren't these characters diarrhea-ing all over themselves at the sight of some of this shit? And to think that Ebert said this film was a "bankruptcy of imagination"! Jesus wept.References: > Mark Richard Adams. “Clive Barker's queer monsters: exploring transgression, sexuality, and the other.” Clive Barker: Dark Imaginer> Bryan and Joe's Hellraiser Podcast: Such Sights To Show. Senior Research Fellow Dr Claire Higgins from UNSW’s Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law takes and an in-depth look at one form of complementary pathways: protected entry. In this podcast, Dr Higgins examines the evidence of how, when and why protected-entry procedures work, drawing lessons from around the world.
Claire Higgins joined me over the summer for a discussion on coaching and consulting, and looking at her work on positive psychology as well as martial arts. At time of recording, she was studying for a Masters in Exercise and Sport Psychology. She was raised in the UAE and worked across the Middle East in the humanitarian sector for 12 years, focusing on the protection of people affected by armed conflict. Influenced by Jean Claude Van Damme, watching his videos as a 12-year old in the 80's, she took up karate and twenty five years later, started teaching self-defence. Concerning for her and me is that there is an increased interest in how to defend oneself from knife attacks. Claire’s definition about success is about being able to build a life that brings her closer to her family and being healthy; she believes that the rat race of going up and up and up a career ladder, will eventually lead to burnout if it lacks meaning, and things might suddenly change; we discuss her view on the classic career and how subjective the view on success really is. Leading from positive change, we discuss hedonic well being and the pursuit of a meaningful life as we are getting older; and, as life gets more complex, we aren’t able to control our environment, which means we are forced to look inwards to re-arrange the pieces. What’s driving us on? I enjoyed the conversation with Claire, and her take on life and success. Claire developed Inner Athletics as a research lab and consultancy for performance, stress and recovery. This evolved from her executive coaching practice in Dubai which she ran for 4 years, focusing on performance, communications, leadership, conflict resolution and resilience. Before registering it in the UK, she studied for a diploma in Positive Organisational Psychology and began researching strengths, motivation, leadership, teamwork and positive emotions. From there, she began building bridges between Positive Psychology and coaching through her Inner Strength program. We move on to discuss difference of coaching vs. consulting, and how the relationship changes pending on client expectations; the better you know the client, one could fall into the trap to help them with some shortcuts. It is all about destiny and faith, as well as being at the right time, environment and having the right motivation. She recommends to read Martin Seligman’s book Flourish and her mantra is “If you can’t fully recover, you cannot fully adapt”; if you would like to reach out to her, please contact her via LinkedIn. Recorded 13 February 2019 Saudi teen Rahaf al Qunun captured world attention when she barricaded herself in a Bangkok hotel room and claimed asylum. Within days, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) had determined she was a refugee and Canada rapidly offered to resettle her. Between 2015 and 2017, Australia resettled a ‘special intake’ of 12,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees. This was a different, but no less important, emergency resettlement response to pressing humanitarian needs. Both these cases show how countries can help refugees in urgent need of protection, thereby demonstrating international solidarity and responsibility-sharing. But how, why and when do governments decide to offer resettlement – and to whom? Join our expert panel discussion to find out more. - Sophie McNeill, the ABC journalist who interviewed Rahaf al Qunun in her hotel room and just days after her arrival in Canada - Khanh Hoang, a UNHCR Senior Protection Assistant with unique insights into how resettlement options work - Dr Claire Higgins, a Senior Research Associate at the Kaldor Centre, with expertise on Australia’s special humanitarian intake process
Claire Higgins’ important book recounts how governments and policy-makers have dealt with the confluence of issues emerging from the end of the ‘White Australia’ policy, a recognition of international responsibilities, and shifting public opinion. Hear her conversation with The Guardian's Ben Doherty, as she shows the extent to which the attitudes and statements of politicians and policymakers can shape the mood of the country, for better and worse.

How has Australia moved from a humanitarian approach to asylum seekers – and is there a way back? How is public opinion influenced by the actions and attitudes of politicians and the media? What impact can international law and the legal profession have? On 2 November, UNSW Law Alumni’s Look who’s talking series presented a fascinating discussion with: Historian and Asylum By Boat author Dr Claire Higgins; Guardian Australia journalist Ben Doherty; Scholar, barrister and Kaldor Centre Acting Director Prof. Guy S Goodwin-Gill; and Wotton + Kearney Partner Heidi Nash-Smith Moderator: Dean of UNSW Law Professor George Williams AO As leaders around the world balance populist pressure against an unprecedented number of refugees, our panel takes a closer look at the history of Australia’s asylum policy, and how it has been shaped by governments, law, and ever-changing public opinion. Our panel of experts explored what is needed for Australia to return to a humanitarian approach, and what impact the legal profession can have on improving policy and protecting the rights of asylum seekers.
In her new book, Asylum by Boat: Origins of Australia’s Refugee Policy (New South Press, 2017), Claire Higgins, a Senior Research Associate at the Andrew and Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at the University of New South Wales Law School, explores the origins of Australia’s refugee policy. She investigates the Australian government’s response to the arrival by boat, in the late 1970s, of thousands of Vietnamese refugees. Unlike today, however, while boat turn-backs and detention were considered, these policies were rejected. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A government under intense pressure from unprecedented numbers of asylum seekers arriving by boat, its radical policy attracting global attention; this might sound like contemporary Australia. It is in fact the Australian government of 40 years ago, facing the wave of boat people from Vietnam. Senior research associate at the Kaldor Centre, Dr Claire Higgins, speaks to The World Today about her book 'Asylum By Boat: the Origins of Australia's Refugee Policy'.
