Send us a textMore than four years after we discussed the first film in the series, we're returning to the depths of Clive Barker's imagination. Some of us more reluctantly than others. But make no mistake, it's time to play.Puzzle boxes, people without skin, chains with fishhooks, Kirsty, people with nails or pins in their heads, blood and goo, Julia. Yes, they're all back for more in Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)!
Hellraiser panel with Doug Bradley, Ashley Laurence, Nicholas Vince, Barbie Wilde, Simon Bamford & Andrew Robinson Days of the Dead Phoenix June 29, 2024
Every Friday is FRIDAY NIGHT FIENDS during HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and today we're discussing the follow up to one of our favorite horror movies. Kirsty, Julia, Pinhead and the Lament Configuration are back and hotter than ever and we're gonna be spending a lot of time down under under the gaze of Leviathan. We're talking “HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2” from 1988 directed by Tony Randel and starring Claire Higgins, Ashley Laurence and Doug Bradley. The sultry Julia returns with the help of a sick doctor and she's leading souls into hell for her master, LEVIATHAN. Kirsty's brave ass wants to go and rescue her father and the Cenobites return with grandiose plans of torture. All the gore and eroticism work almost as well as in the original and then the last 30 minutes happen. Why did they go out like that? Still looks demented and cool but does the good outweigh the underwhelming? Hear us tell it. This movie definitely has its fans but boy does word of mouth drop off hard for the franchise after this one. Put on your best white suit because we've got a date with a bloody mattress in Tony Randel's Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988). Tagging in for the discussion is our forever-Hellraiser guest: Bryan Christopher! Join us as we heap all the deserve praise on Clare Higgins' Julia Cotton, who finally gets her due in this spectacular sequel. Hellbound astounds with a bigger budget and more world building, but sometimes suffers from an unfocused kitchen sink approach that the first film wisely avoided. After the events of Hellraiser original Hellraiser, no one believes Kirsty Cotton's story of a puzzle box summoning demons and killing her family. But when Julia returns from the dead, Kirsty must revisit the nightmare she thought she had escaped to try and rescue her father, confront the Cenobites (old and new) and put an end to Julia's reign of terror before it's too late. Oh what sights we have to show you! HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST is in full effect! A Horror discussion dropping every damn weekday and we cap off our midweek theme of sex, romance and passion with a movie all about psychopathic adoration and the thin line between pleasure and pain. Much of the sequels fall off hard, but Clive Barker's directorial debut based upon his novel “The Hellhound Heart” stands out as something unique in the horror world. Yeah, we're talking the disturbing 1987 film “Hellraiser” starring Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence and Doug Bradley as the cenobite leader that would come to be know as “Pinhead”. Movie goers coined that one. What kind of pleasure/pain passions are you into? If you became a cenobite, what would your theme be? Probably cock torture, knowing you. I'm not judging. I actually think it's super cool. Another of Full Moon's HP Lovecraft adaptations, LURKING FEAR tends to get forgotten in the shadow of the Stuart Gordon trilogy, but this fun genre mash-up has a lot to like. With plenty of genre stars (including Vincent Schiavelli, Jon Finch, Ashley Laurence, and Jeffrey Combs), the story melds a hostage flick with supernatural horror as a skeleton crew of survivors hole up in a cemetery to fight a violent creature stalking the graves. ⛓ In preparation for the upcoming release of the NEW Hellraiser movie, we're kicking off spooky season by revisiting the Clive Barker original, based on his novella The Hellbound Heart. In this episode, we cover everything from the first film, including the Cenobites, the fairytale characters, the nightmarish imagery, and we'll even touch upon some of the later sequels, as we'll probably never get to anything beyond the 1988 follow up in future podcasts. We'll also be choosing which character we think was most deserving to die. So make sure to stick around until the end!▶️ Watch the Video Podcast☑️ Vote in the Cherry Picker

WE'LL TEAR YOUR SOUL APART!”On this week's episode, we continue our month of spooky movies by revisiting Hellraiser, 1987 horror classic directed by Clive Barker starring Ashley Laurence, Clare Higgins, Andrew Robinson, and Doug Bradley as the famous Cenobite, Pinhead. We talk about how this film differs very much from how it was conveyed to us when we were younger. Instead of it being a film about torture with senseless acts of brutality, we see that there is actually a story present, a story about love, lust, betrayal, obsession, pain, and how in some ways, pain and pleasure are one in the same, and not as distant from each other as we may think. The characters are very relatable, and all interesting in their own way.We go into the connection between this film and the BDSM culture, even though there are some in the latter that would want to stay far away from this film, but how maybe the film isn't insulting the culture, but merely using it as an example of how unchecked passions can be detrimental to innocent bystanders, or to oneself. We go into the production of the film, and how the film was produced for 1 million dollars, which is extremely low considering the average budgets for films at the time. We talk about how the film was shot chronologically, mostly filmed in one location, and how they had to deal with the censors when it came to rating this film.So if you feel like you're up for it, then enjoy this week's episode on this horror classic. Be advised this movie does have extreme scenes of violence with lots of blood and gore, it's not for the faint of heart. If you're trying to get into horror films but still working your way up, then it might be best to visit this film in the future. But if you're still curious about it, then enjoy listening to this episode about it.Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

Today we're going to showcase an actress who has actually pulled off the rare hat trick of surviving through every one of her appearances in the franchise she helped make amazing. I'm talking about Ashley Laurence, who brought to life on screen one of the most unlucky daughters and nieces in the history of horror films, Kirsty Cotton, in Clive Barker's classic Hellraiser. Ashley has since taken her place alongside other heroines of horror history. So, let's open the box and peer inside to find out WTF Happened to this Horror Celebrity?
Uhuu! This episode should have been Gunpower Milkshake, but we decided to postpone that so we can post this one for Halloween. One of the holy horror franchise movies of the 80's. Where it should have stayed. In this episode we discuss the 1987 gore porn movie, Hellraiser. Which is available on Amazon Prime. Directed by Clive Barker. Starring Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and Sean Chapman (but mostly Oliver Smith). Every movie we discuss will be available on either: Netflix, Hulu, HBO MAX, YouTube, or Amazon Prime. The next episode will be Gunpower Milkshake and then our test recording of The Art of Self Defense. Finally. Intro music by: Luis. Outro music by: Cairo Braga - Revision of the Future
We have chosen this movie... And he has come. It's time to get our souls torn apart as we dive into Hellraiser, released September 18th in 1987. It's the horror film that spawned the classic franchise and gave birth to the iconic Pinhead, even though the original creator really wishes people would stop calling him that. Gabe Joey and Chris talk... Hellbound: Hellraiser II is a 1988 horror film directed by Tony Randel and starring Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Kenneth Cranham and Doug Bradley.[4][5] The second film in the Hellraiser franchise, Hellraiser II draws heavily upon (and was made by much of the same cast and crew as) its precursor, Hellraiser, which was released a year prior. Laurence reprises her role as Kirsty Cotton, who is admitted into a psychiatric hospital after the events of the first film. There, the head doctor (Cranham) unleashes the Cenobites, a group of sadomasochistic beings from another dimension. In the past, British military officer Elliot Spencer is transformed into the Cenobite "Pinhead" after opening the Lament Configuration. Shortly after her father is killed by Frank Cotton, Kirsty Cotton is admitted into a psychiatric hospital. Interviewed by Doctor Channard, and his assistant Kyle MacRae, she tells her account of the events, and pleads with them to destroy the bloody mattress her murderous stepmother, Julia Cotton, died upon. After hearing Kirsty's story, Dr. Channard, who is secretly obsessed with the Lament Configuration, has the mattress brought to his home and convinces mentally ill patient, Mr. Browning, to lie on it and cut himself with a straight razor. The resulting blood frees a skinless Julia from the Cenobite dimension. MacRae, having snuck inside Dr. Channard's house to investigate Kirsty's claims, witnesses the event and flees. Kirsty meets a young patient named Tiffany, who demonstrates an amazing aptitude for puzzles. Later that night Kirsty is awakened in her room by a vision of her skinless father, who tells her in writing that he's in Hell and to help him. MacRae arrives back at the hospital and informs Kirsty he believes everything is true. The two decide to return to Dr. Channard's house. Meanwhile, Dr. Channard, seduced by Julia, has brought more mentally ill patients to his home for her to feed on and regenerate. Kirsty and MacRae arrive at Channard's home. MacRae is killed by a now fully regenerated Julia, and Kirsty is knocked unconscious. Channard and Julia kidnap Tiffany and force her to unlock the Lament Configuration so they can enter the labyrinth-like world of Pinhead and the Cenobites. They enter, followed by Kirsty, who now possesses the Lament Configuration. Pinhead and the other Cenobites find Kirsty and tell her she is free to explore. Julia betrays Dr. Channard and leaves him to be transformed into a Cenobite by the god of hell, Leviathan. Kirsty encounters Frank Cotton in the labyrinth, who reveals that he tricked her by pretending to be her father. Julia appears and destroys Frank in revenge for killing her, allowing Kirsty to escape. Julia is then killed by a vortex that opens within the labyrinth, leaving only her skin behind. Kirsty and Tiffany reconnect and attempt to escape, but are ambushed by Channard, now having become a Cenobite. Kirsty and Tiffany flee and encounter Pinhead and the other Cenobites. Kirsty shows Pinhead a photograph of Elliot Spencer that she took from Channard's study, and he gradually remembers that he was human. Suddenly, Channard appears. Pinhead and the other Cenobites attempt to fight him, but Channard easily overpowers and kills them all. Channard traps Kirsty and Tiffany. Kirsty finds Julia's skin and wears it to distract Channard, giving Tiffany enough time to once again solve the Lament Configuration. Channard is killed and the door to hell is finally closed. Kirsty and Tiffany leave. Elsewhere, two moving men are removing Dr. Channard's belongings from his home. One is pulled inside of the mattress, and the other witnesses a mysterious pillar rise from within it.
For lucky Episode 13, we discuss 1994's (or 1995's?... nobody knows...) "FELONY," which is the greatest film ever made. Cars are flipped, Combs are shot, and backs are stabbed in this ridiculous action film, co-starring Lance Henriksen, Ashley Laurence, David Warner, and Joe Don Baker. If you haven't seen this film, stop what you're doing and watch it today!
Hellraiser. Come and get hooked with Rick and Jake as they open this box of terror and take a ceno-bite out of Clive Barker's horror classic. It will tear your soul apart!
Andy practices his Spanish with Hasta el Viento Tiene Miedo; Philip praises Ashley Laurence (and absolutely nothing else) in Warlock III; and we inadvertently rank most of the major franchises while trying to come up with a Look Good for the Boys ratings system.
Clive Barkers 1987 Hellraiser discussed
This week, the Brides open Lemarchand's puzzle box and experience the limits of pleasure and pain as we explore Clive Barker's landmark 1987 bondage-fueled horrorscape Hellraiser. Along the way, we ask the truly important questions: Is this the horniest movie we'll ever cover? Did the term 'milquetoast' get invented for the character of Larry? Is any sexual experience worth what Julia does in this movie, but particularly, for a sleazeball like Frank? We also touch on the film's status as a queer artifact, the representation of healthy BDSM in media, and Alysa subjects Lindsay to readings from The Hellbound Heart, the novella upon which Hellraiser is based. Warning: contains 'well muscled buttocks.' Hellraiser, 1987. Directed and written by Clive Barker. Starring Doug Bradley, Clare Higgins, Andrew Robinson, Ashley Laurence, and Sean Chapman.
A family is torn apart by infidelity, a small box, and Cenobites. Gus joins us to discuss the Clive Barker classic on today's entry in the 31 Days of Halloween entry series.
Night twenty of 31 Nights of Frights returns us to the sixth entry of the Hellraiser series, Hellraiser: Hellseeker. This also marks the return of Ashley Laurence in the role of Kirsty Cotton to more or less complete the Kirsty story arc. The important question is, is this much divided entry worth a watch? We head into week 2 with Hellraiser, a movie Jen had previously referred to as (paraphrasing) “more erotic than Event Horizon”. Well. This movie is not as erotic as Jen remembers, so we try to make it a little more sexy. Also, we hate this movie. There is way too much fluid, everyone is gooey, and people are - let’s just say the word - MOIST. Join us in discussing Pinhead’s attractiveness, mustard eyeshadow, and finger sucking. Remember to rate and review (and try not to throw up when watching this movie), or we’ll send some meat hooks after you. Greetings pinheads, butterballs, and all things in betwixt, and welcome back to Horror Business, the podcast that has such sights to show you. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! This episode we are talking about works of English horror maestro Clive Barker, specifically Nightbreed and Hellraiser. We begin by talking about what we’ve seen recently. We were fortunate enough to catch the ‘80s classic Night Of The Comet at the Mahoning Drive In’s third annual Zombiefest, (more info on the drive in and upcoming events can be found here) and we discuss the social messages of the film and how it was much better than either of us remember it. We discuss Alien: Covenant, and then discuss the concept of personal taste and aesthetic preferences when it comes to film and how differences in such taste is handled oftentimes. We then talk about the recent film Colossal and how the actual film differs drastically from how it was marketed. First up is 1990’s Nightbreed. We open up by talking about how each of us got into the work of Clive Barker, his particular style of writing, and the impact he’s had on the genre of horror and fantasy. We talk about the symbolism present in Nightbreed (anti-colonialism, LGBTQ issues) and Justin discusses how growing up the movie resonated with him as a symbol for getting into punk. We talk about the difference between the theatrical cut and the directors cut, in particular the ending, Boone’s hallucinations, and the increased screen time for the monsters in the directors cut. The performances of the actors in the movie and the theme of small towns embracing a fascist attitude towards anything remotely different is briefly examined. The concept of ones “true face”, i.e. our inner selves versus the self we project outwards to society is discussed. Up next is arguably Clive Barker’s most famous film, 1987’s Hellraiser. We discuss the various themes of this movie, including Frank’s hedonism as a metaphor for addiction, the interchangeability of pleasure and pain, and the concept of morality under duress. The aesthetic choices of the film are examined, including the look of the Cenobites, the way the house seems ominous and illogical, the ‘uniquely gross’ look of the film overall. The performances of the actors, particularly Sean Chapman, Ashley Laurence, and Andrew Robertson, are discussed, and finally the cultural impact of the original film and how unorthodox it was and indeed continues to be are discussed. Justin closes out the discussion with two humorous (or so he thinks) anecdotes involving Hellraiser. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening.
