Eliot Bronson has released 6+ records over the past 12 years, both independently and via labels - with a handful produced by Dave Cobb - and he has also won numerous acclaimed songwriting competitions such as Kerrville and Chris Austin contest at Merlefest. Ditching the traditional label/publicist/manager route, Eliot has established a vibrant path that is 100% DIY, community-focused, and as he explains - more fulfilling than ever. We talk at length about that process and how he found himself there, debate the necessity of a whole label or publicity team, explore the idea of the artist in the center of the crowd versus up high and removed on stage, mindfulness practices, and more.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:Eliot Bronson30A FestivalEp 45 - Glen PhillipsEp 46 - Mary Chapin CarpenterCBS Saturday Morning'That Thing You Do'Sam Harris - Waking Up'Zen Mind Beginners Mind'Patty GriffinEmmylou HarrisChris Austin Song Contest (MerleFest)Gillian WelchTelluride Troubadour Songwriting ContestKerrvile Songwriting ContestMelody WalkerRocky Mountain Folks FestClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Thornaby Football Club's committee is facing criticism after they announced that the Teeside-based club would be dropping all of its women's section. First team manager Abbey Lyle tells Clare McDonnell what this means for the women and girls in the club, the support they've received since, and what it says about grassroots women's sport. Clare also discusses the issues with Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, former Paralympian and Chair of Sport Wales and the CEO of Women in Sport, Stephanie Hilborne.Clare talks to the Canadian writer and social activist Naomi Klein about her book Doppelganger, now out in the UK in paperback. The book is a result of her being mistaken for another Naomi – Wolf, for years. Naomi Klein uses her doppelganger as a metaphor to explain many of the issues facing the modern world, from climate change and politics, to obsession with wellness and the ways we parent our children. British writer Lucy Foley began her career writing historical fiction before making an extremely successful switch to crime and thrillers, and with New York Times bestsellers The Paris Apartment and The Guest List under her belt, Lucy has sold more than five and half million books. She joins Clare to discuss her latest novel, The Midnight Feast, which takes place during the opening of a luxury wellness retreat and explores the clash between the insta-ready super-rich and some very disgruntled locals.Grammy-award winning American folk singer/songwriter Aoife O'Donovan has released three critically-acclaimed solo albums, is co-founder and front woman of the string band, Crooked Still, and is also one third of the all-female group I'm With Her. Her latest album, All My Friends, is inspired by the passage of the 19th amendment and the evolving landscape of women's rights in America over the past century. She joins Clare to discuss the themes and to perform live in the studio.Presented by Clare McDonnell Producer: Louise Corley

The Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival at Old Poway Park in San Diego will be held June 1! We're delighted in this episode to share Sam's history through the eyes of his granddaughter Katrina Hinton-Cooper. In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss Sam's music, his tremendous work for the Aquarium Museum of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and his outlook on the world, as shown through his songs, humor, drawings, and observations. We also manage to talk about science fiction, hypnosis through storytelling, circular breathing, and the joys and foibles of our peculiar species. An uplifting episode with something for everyone.Information about the Sam Hinton Festival:https://sdfolkheritage.org/events/sam-hinton-fest/Sam's website:http://samhinton.org/Katrina's blog:https://somerandomchick.jouwweb.nl/the-blogSome YouTube videos of Sam that we mention:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGArzUTCegghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcSLudnKFPA&list=PL3D66F0AE1034A321https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqTDHRau1lcThoughts? The Secret Sisters are a Grammy-nominated (sister) duo from Alabama who have put out 5 records, and navigated a rollercoaster of highs and lows from being signed to Universal records and produced by T Bone Burnett, getting dropped, to lawsuits with a manager, bankruptcy, opening for (and being produced by) Brandi Carlisle, and onto a Grammy nomination. I recorded the first episode of this podcast from the confines of my roommate's closet in our home in Connecticut in September 2020. And now, three and-a-half years later, we've made it to the big stage. From the prestigious Music Hall Lounge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, it's the first LIVE edition of "The Found Generation" podcast (!!!!!!). And in this very special episode, I'm joined by three very special people from my beloved Seacoast community: Stephanie Paolini is the proud owner of 3 Bridges Yoga in Portsmouth. In our conversation, we dive into her CRAZY backstory, which involves getting robbed at gunpoint, a tough battle with cancer, and much, much more. Despite this madness, she is perhaps the kindest human being on the planet, and Stephanie is someone I have immense respect for. Sam Robbins is often described as an "old soul singer songwriter." A Nashville-based musician whose music evokes the likes of James Taylor, Robbins has gained recognition from extensive touring and from his 2018 appearance on The Voice. In our conversation, we discuss his decision to leave the Seacoast for Nashville, the state of the music industry, and more. He also tries to get me canceled. Jennifer Desrosiers is the CEO/Founder of Altitude Companies, as well as beloved Seacoast staples LANEY & LU, Ginger Fox Baking, and PALETTE. After spending 20 years climbing the ranks of soul-sucking corporate America, Desrosiers left that world behind in 2012 so she could pursue the "integrated lifestyle" she craved for herself. In our conversation, she gives advice to anyone who wants to take the leap, and we also talk about managing ambition, the keys to being a great leader, and what she hopes her legacy will be. Shirley Collins first enjoyed success as one of the leading figures in the British folk revival of the 1960s. She initially performed with her sister, Dolly Collins, and also collaborated with other folk luminaries to create some of the era's most beloved albums. In the past decade she has made an acclaimed return to the concert stage and the recording studio. Shirley was born in Sussex in 1935. She can still recall how her grandfather used to sing folk songs to comfort her while they were sheltering during German air raids in the early 1940s. Alongside her career as a singer, in the 1950s she travelled to the American South with Alan Lomax, where they made field recordings of blues and folk musicians, helping to create a significant archive. Later in her performing career, Shirley found that she could no longer sing, following a distressing betrayal in her private life. She stepped away from music and was silent for many years, taking on other work, including a stint in a job centre Then, in her 80s, she found her voice again. In 2016 she released her first new album after a gap of almost four decades, and she has since released two more albums. Shirley lives in Sussex, not far from her childhood home. Kathryn Brooks is a singer-songwriter originally from Louisville, Kentucky and after being "raised all over the place", returned home to Louisville to embark on her music career. Growing her music straight from her Kentucky roots, the artist got her first guitar in 5th grade when retired bluegrass musicians living outside of Bakersfield in the high desert of California began teaching bluegrass classics at her school. Kathryn started songwriting, releasing music, and playing out seriously in New York City during college. She has since continued to write music inspired by the folk, country, and blues music of the region. Louisville, Kentucky to Victorville, California; then to Kutztown, Pennsylvania, New York, New York, and back to Louisville...…with occasional co-writes with a friend in Scotland. "The hope of all this moving around is that there's something from all these places that pours into the music no matter how subtle." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

Stigall unpacks the media hyper-focus on current popular country music songs and what it tells us about the state of the country's mood. Mainstream media loses their minds on the Trump indictment yesterday even though most of them know fully its the weakest legal argument against him. Plus, annual COVID shots, Al Sharpton dazzles with his knowledge of history, a new law allowing you to sue the government if they try to censor you, and the Devon Archer transcripts have been released for all to read. - For more info visit the official website: https://chrisstigall.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisstigallshow/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisStigall Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.stigall/ Listen on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/StigallPod Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/StigallShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the 1950's, an extraordinary young woman lived, worked and performed her original music in New York City. Frustrated by a lack of commercial success, she left Manhattan and in 1974, disappeared entirely, never to be heard from again. In the 2000's, her astounding music was re-discovered and her legacy re-written. The story of Elizabeth Eaton Converse, known professionally as Connie Converse, is so bewitchingly intriguing that musician and writer Howard Fishman devoted 13 years of his life researching and chronicling it. The product of this nearly decade-and-a-half labor of love is his new book: To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse.Howard joins us to highlight the deep genius of Connie Converse… possibly our first recorded singer/songwriter and additionally, an artist, poet, writer, classical composer, scholar and activist. What were the factors that inspired her brilliance and muffled her notoriety within her own time? Howard poured through Connie's creations, files, journals, and letters. He spoke to those who knew her best and he carefully studied, analyzed and theorized about Connie's work, her vision and her trajectory.Upon first hearing Connie's voice, Howard found her to be both unique and familiar. He needed to learn more.Howard's research brought him to small New England towns, suburban Michigan, Greenwich Village, Prague and beyond to better understand Connie's path and to piece together the enigmatic life and ultimate mysterious fate of a woman who was so far ahead of her time, we are only now coming to hear and understand her.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Air on Prime and Comedy Central's Drunk History on Hulu, Prime and many streaming platforms.
