Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Mel Parsons' new album will be able to experience it live, the Kiwi singer taking it on tour. Earlier this morning she announced a seven-date tour for her upcoming album ‘Castle Hill', named for the remote Southern Alps town in which it was recorded. The album is due out in August, but half a dozen singles have already been released, including Post High Slide, Brick By Brick', and her latest release, ‘Grain by Grain'. “It's just kind of the way that people are releasing these days,” Parsons told Mike Hosking. “With the way, y'know, the way that Spotify and the streaming side of things works, is that you just sort of start teasing them out ... that's the way we've done it for this record.” And to celebrate the official release, Parsons is bringing 'Castle Hill' to life on stage with a full live band, performing in Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Auckland, Wellington, and Palmerston North. Parsons is no stranger to touring and is frequently on the road. “On the one hand, it's my job, but also I, genuinely it's my favourite part of the whole thing,” she told Hosking. “I don't think it's being in front of people, but I think it's, it's what that opportunity gives you – being on stage is this very, very special chance to just connect with people.” “I'm not particularly woo-woo Mike, but it's a bit of an energy, kind of, transfer, y'know like, what you give out, it comes around,” Parsons said. “It's a very, very special, unique feeling, performing live.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Laxmi Tiwari, a folk singer from Rampur in Palpa, is known for her knowledge of traditional songs from Nepal's Gandaki region. She performs a range of culturally significant genres popular within Brahmin and Chhetri communities, including Magal, Uwali, Ratyauli, Balan and Silok. Recently gaining wider recognition as “Tiwari Aama” after her songs garnered engagement on YouTube, she is also known for spontaneously composing and performing her own lyrics. Her songs reflecting the lives of Nepali migrants have also resonated with audiences beyond Nepal. Gillette never reached the top of the charts, but he's a very talented singer/songwriter. Many of his songs have been performed by artists you have heard of, including John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, Nanci Griffith, and Linda Ronstadt. “The Bells in the Evening” appears on Gillette's debut album, released in 1967. The album, simply titled “Steve Gillette,” stands as one of Steve's finest recordings. “The Bells” is a bittersweet (actually sweet-bitter) song of love blossoming in the spring and fading away in the fall. I find the melody and lyrics deeply moving. Perhaps you will, too. The song is also replete with imagery. When you listen, what images come to your mind? Irish folk singer Dolores Keane dies aged 72 - The East Asia Film Festival Ireland 2026 - Krapp's Last Tape

Celebrate the life and work of Will Geer by exploring his friendship and artistic partnership with Woody Guthrie. Together they toured the country, performing in union halls and at labor benefits. Geer used his theatrical skills to amplify Guthrie's music and political message.

Born in Frankfort, Indiana, on March 9, 1902, Will Geer told the Indianapolis News in 1977 that his first public performance took place on the streets of Indianapolis, where he recited a poem outside the Lockerbie Square home of James Whitcomb Riley. Geer later became widely known for his portrayal of Grandpa Zeb on the 1970s television series The Waltons. But his life extended far beyond television. He helped stage one of the most politically explosive musicals in American history, supported labor organizing during the Great Depression, and used his art as a platform for activism. Geer was also a close friend and collaborator of the legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie. Together they toured the country, performing in union halls and at labor benefits. Geer used his theatrical skills to amplify Guthrie's music and political message. Their collaboration left a lasting imprint. Even after Guthrie's death, Geer continued to preserve and interpret his songs. This week on Cultural Manifesto, we'll celebrate the life and work of Will Geer by exploring his friendship and artistic partnership with Woody Guthrie. Together they toured the country, performing in union halls and at labor benefits. Geer used his theatrical skills to amplify Guthrie's music and political message.

Dan Reeder is a singer-songwriter and painter originally from Louisiana, who has lived in Germany for decades, released critically acclaimed records via John Prine's Oh Boy Records (as one of the first artists signed to the label, at almost 50 years old), and is somewhat of a cult folk-hero. This is a Tribute episode to Allan Sherman, one of the greatest song parodists who ever lived. He emerged from nowhere in the early 1960s to become one of the biggest selling musical artists in the pre-Beatles era.His album, “My Son, The Folksinger”, released in 1962, shot to the top of the charts, and became the fastest selling record of its time. It captured the entire country. His next album, “My Son, The Nut”, featured his biggest hit, “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah”, about a boy writing home to his parents from summer camp. It was written to the tune of Ponchielli's “Dance Of The Hours”.Before he became a musical star Sheran was employed in television, where he came up with the idea for the show “I've Got a Secret”.His musical ascendance was meteoric. He played some of his song parodies to Harpo Marx, his neighbor, who invited him to perform them at some dinner parties. George Burns was at one such party and he urged his friend at Warner Brothers Records to sign Sherman. “Sarah Jackman”, sung to the tune of “Frere Jacques”, became his first hit after President John F. Kennedy was overheard singing the song in a hotel lobby.Sherman's musical career peaked in 1963, but then, following the assassination of JFK and the emergence of The Beatles and the other British Invasion bands, his career waned and it was over by 1967. Sherman died at age 49 in 1973.
