The International Space Station has been orbiting in lower earth since 1998 and has been continually inhabited since November 2000. The ISS was originally conceived as a staging base for future missions into deep space. As it turns out, lower earth orbit is an ideal setting for scientific research, from physics and meteorology to astronomy and the life sciences. In this episode we talk with three scientists whose projects are using lower earth orbit to deepen our knowledge of biotechnology and its benefits for mankind.
Dr. Michael Roberts, Ph.D. is Chief Science Officer of the International Space Station National Laboratory ( https://www.issnationallab.org/ ), and Vice President at the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space ( CASIS - https://www.issnationallab.org/about/center-for-the-advancement-of-science-in-space-leadership/ ), which as manager of the ISS National Laboratory in partnership with NASA, is responsible to the nation for enabling access to the International Space Station for research, technology development, STEM education, and commercial innovation in space as a public service to foster a scalable and sustainable low Earth orbit economy. Before joining CASIS in 2013, Dr. Roberts worked as a microbial ecologist, principal investigator, and research group lead in the NASA Advanced Life Support program at the Kennedy Space Center. Prior to arriving at NASA-KSC in 1999, Dr. Roberts completed an undergraduate degree in biology at Maryville College, a doctorate in microbiology at Wesleyan University and post-doctoral research at the Center for Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University and the RIKEN Institute in Wako-shi, Japan. This is episode 15 with Western Mass, Fillipina-American artist, Donnabelle Casis! Donnabelle is a painter, radio show host for the ArtBeat Report on the Bill Newman Show, co-curator for the ArtSalon, arts community organizer and much more! Donnabelle received her MFA in Painting from the University of Washington in Seattle. She has exhibited in museums and galleries across the US and abroad. She has received numerous awards and grants including the Neddy Artist Fellowship for Painting. This is a conversation about finding your center to find your sense of place, about asking questions, about those moments where you question your identity as an artist and how that can be a fertile place of beginning. It's a conversation of about releasing yourself from pressure and finding joy through play and trusting the process. It's also a conversation about the spiritual realm and how we are all interconnected and the role this plays in her new work. This conversation has so much wisdom in it! This week's episode is hosted by talented South African duo FRIGID ARMADILLO with their unpredictable, innovative and quirky sound. Siyabulela (Siya) Buhlungu and Lebo Luchela began making music together in varsity when Siya accidentally left a project on Lebo's laptop. What started as a pass time became the catalyst for a complete change in career trajectory for Lebo who quips it was Siya that inspired the drastic change. For Siya the love of music was belated. “I wasn't into music as a child. I stumbled across it,” he recalls. The pair was brought together by their love for Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Dubstep and EDM although Lebo couldn't resist the enigmatic influence of Kanye West. Siya sums it up best in saying “our music is a fusion of everything we've listened to.” The growing pains of seeking a signature style have seen Frigid tow the lines of genius and absurdity explaining, “We consciously toned down on the quirkiness. We've become committed to the quality of the final product and making our music relatable.” The challenge comes in maintaining ones personality whilst upholding good standards. “We're not as creative as we used to be but we are more pragmatic. Experience and knowledge take you steps forward,” they confess. When it's all set and done Frigid Armadillo wants to be remembered as timeless and influential. “We want people to be like ‘wow, those guys were different'.” It's only a matter of time before the curious pair with a peculiar name make a seismic change in the South African tech and mainstream house fraternity. Enjoy this Deep Afro Journey with FRIGID ARMADILLO including their latest release Colours on Redolent! 01. Frigid Armadillo - Penga (Madmotormiquel Remix) 02. Masuda Feat. On this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast, Tom Patton talks with Cynthia Bouthot, president of Space Commerce Matters, a pioneer in Low Earth Orbit Demand Creation. Space Commerce Matters provides a number of services for space agencies and governments, non-traditional commercial customers, aerospace companies, and satellite service providers. Offerings include building demand with end-user customers for LEO activity; studies highlighting gap technologies related to LEO phenomena for R&D and marketing applications; market analyses indicating most promising current and future markets; commercialization roadmaps tied to end-user customers and markets; and generation of funding and investment via strategic partnerships. SCM also serves as implementation partner for customers using NASA's new commercial allocation. Cynthia and her SCM team have been working with end users in the life science, manufacturing, satellite applications, advanced material and technology development sectors and they truly understand market demand as well as end-user requirements. Prior to founding SCM, Cynthia Bouthot was a founding member of CASIS, the manager of the International Space Station National Lab (ISSNL). While there, she established and developed the demand model for private sector entities, focused on utilization and value creation, which ultimately led to more than half of the research on board the ISSNL being conducted by commercial businesses. Cynthia spent nine years working in innovation and new market creation throughout Europe. Cynthia was the Consul, and head of Trade and Investment for the British Consulate in Boston and Head of Innovation and R&D for the whole of the UK and US, with a special focus on space and life sciences. How does what happens in space affect your everyday life? The Ex Terra podcast is dedicated to introducing you to many of the interesting people involved in the commercial space industry, and taking you behind the scenes with many of the companies making significant contributions to the new space economy. The podcast is available on Anchor, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Breaker, Overcast, Pocketcasts and Radio Public.
