Since the beginning of the RGS our go-to guest on issues concerning the Canadian justice system, Correctional Service Canada and the Parole Board of Canada has been a former Alberta crown attorney, executive director of the Canadian Police Association, senior policy advisor to a federal Minister of Public Safety, Scott Newark. In the 90's this included so-called "Club Fed" prisons like Ferndale in B.C. which included a 9 hole golf course inmates were allowed to use. In recent years the Canadian justice system has come under significant criticism for the easy (instant) parole granted dangerous individuals, for the moving of convicted serial rapist, kidnapper and murderer Paul Bernardo from a maximum to medium-security prison. We took our program inside two federal prisons, Joyceville and Warkarth, for live shows with the inmates committees. At Joyceville, we asked the inmates committee what would happen to Clifford Olson, British Columbia serial child/youth murderer if he were transferred into the general population of the prison, as Olson had been requesting. The chairman of the committee said bluntly "he would be murdered."   Guest: Scott Newark, former Alberta crown attorney, executive director of the Canadian Police Association, senior policy advisor to a federal Minister of Public Safety Learn more about your ad choices. One in particular remains seared in memory. A piece of cardboard on which, in a child's writing, were the words "I love you Daddy." - Rick decided to engage on his adventures in NYC where there was concern of a possible repeat terror attack. Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Jon Steigerwaldt, the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society's forest conservation director for the upper Midwest, to preview the 2024 ruffed grouse hunting season. Jon describes the ideal habitat for ruffed grouse and woodcock, and offers plenty of tips to find more birds this season. The guys also discuss new projects in Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania getting underway because of the recent memorandum of understanding (MOU) between PF & QF and RGS & AWS. Episode Highlights: • Steigerwaldt talks about the science behind ruffed grouse drumming counts and what they indicate about bird survival through the winter, but what drumming counts don't tell biologists about the population heading into autumn hunting seasons. • Steigerwaldt also talks about the 10-year ruffed grouse population cycle and how climate change is influencing swings up and down. • Learn more about the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society and check out their current membership offer at www.RuffedGrouseSociety.org. onX Hunt is a proud supporter of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever and they want to thank everyone who gives back to the birds we all love to hunt and the places they call home.

Episode fourteen, the final episode of our specialist series, Explore: How To Plan An Expedition, focuses on the future of exploration. This is actually a live recording taken in 2022 from the opening event for the RGS' annual expedition gathering, Explore, held each November. This is a panel discussion with Sophie Roberts, Oliver Steeds, Leo Houlding, and Dr Heidi Sevestre, on the topic of what it means to be an explorer in the 21st century. They talk about the myriad of global challenges facing exploration today, as well as the responsibilities and tasks facing travellers, adventurers and field scientists, and where they overlap or differ. They also discuss if there's anything left to explore (spoiler alert, there's a lot). Sophie Roberts is an author and journalist who focuses on travel stories in remote parts of the world, with a special interest in literature and history. She is the author of 'The Lost Pianos Of Siberia'. Oliver Steeds is an international investigative journalist and broadcaster. He also founded Nekton; a not-for-profit research institute which commits to scientific exploration and protection of the world's oceans.Leo Houlding is a world-class rock climber, mountaineer and adventurer. He's arguably one of the greatest expedition climbers in history. Dr Heidi Sevestre is a glaciologist, working at the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme and teaches at The University Centre in Svalbard. She is an avid science communicator and has led numerous field research expeditions from tropical glaciers to the depth of the polar regions. She also features in episode twelve of this series. The third episode of our specialist series, Explore: How To Plan An Expedition, focuses on the reality of funding, and who's paying. Money is one of the least favoured things to talk about when it comes to expedition planning but it's unavoidably essential, as without it, your grand plan is very little more than an idea. In this episode, Matt speaks with Dr Eleanor Drinkwater, Ben Saunders, Tom Allen, and Shane Winser. They go deep into grant applications - how to write them, what to include, and how to review them. They also cover crowdfunding, corporate commercial funding, and even self-funding. They discuss how competitive it can be, how to stand out, and what work remains even when the expedition is over. Dr Eleanor Drinkwater is an entomologist, expedition leader, lecturer and science communicator. Having completed her PhD on invertebrate personality, she is fascinated by both invertebrate behaviour, as well as understanding how humans can work with and cultivate invertebrates in a sustainable and ethical way. She has worked both in the UK and further afield in Peru, Australia, Honduras and French Guiana. She is committed to science communication, and has also co-founded an entomophagy science festival group.Ben Saunders is a pioneering polar athlete and a record-breaking long-distance skier, who has covered more than 6,000km on foot in the Polar Regions. He's broken the record for the longest human-powered polar journey in history, and holds the record for the longest solo Arctic journey by a Briton. He has shared his story with a huge range of people, businesses and organisations, and his focus is now on climate technology investment.Tom Allen has been a full-time traveller, writer and filmmaker for over 15 years. He has undertaken adventurous journeys on 5 continents, runs a long-established adventure cycling website, and now describes himself reluctantly on his social media profiles as a 'self-unemployed creative explorer'. In 2016 he led the RGS-supported Land Rover Bursary expedition to explore and map the first long-distance hiking trail across the Caucasus. The Transcaucasian Trail, as it is now known, has since evolved into a massive international development project which he estimates will take a good decade or so to complete.Shane Winser works for the Royal Geographical Society where she curates the annual Explore symposium and Festival. A zoology graduate, she assisted in the planning and organisation of the RGS's own research programmes to the tropical forests of Sarawak and Brunei, the mountains of the Karakoram, and the drylands of western Australia, Kenya and Oman. She chairs the technical panel for BS 8848: the British Standard for organisers of a wide variety of ventures, including university and academic fieldwork, gap year experiences, adventure holidays, charity challenges and research expeditions. You can find out more about the RGS and use the Explore digital resources by visiting rgs.org/explore, or @rgs_ibg on socials.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Tonight we have a special show with our well-bearded buddy from RGS, Nate Kennedy. Nate is an awesome storyteller and works hard to preserve habitat that we all like to hunt and explore. We begin the show chatting with Nate about his background in hunting and fishing and how he got hooked up with a cool job at RGS and we learn more about where dollars go when donated to RGS and AWS. Then we chat a little about bird habitat and dig into Nate's new hunting dog and how he has worked for the past year to prep him for this upcoming bird season. A special thank you to Nate for joining our show to get us all fired up about RGS, bird hunting, new dogs and all the things I'm drooling over as we get closer and closer to Fall. Be sure to check out Nate's profile (linked above) to see where he writes and how you can get in touch about the Ruffed Grouse Society. Cheers! Want more Lone Duck? In our latest Frontier pilot podcast, our host Jason DuVernay has a wide-ranging conversation with Communications Committee Chairman Todd Bole and MEC Chairman Alan Christie. We haven't done a podcast in a while, so we cover a lot of ground, including why we decided to re-launch the podcast. We also talk about: a refresher on ways to interact with the union Volunteer opportunities the various communication channels available to pilots our RGS visits and other opportunities to interact face-to-face, including our upcoming pub events.  With the MEC meeting and elections coming up, we discussed how the LEC & MEC meetings are structured, and how the nomination and election process works for executive positions including the Negotiating Committee. You should have heard by now that the MEC is doing another round of telephone polling conducted by the University of New Hampshire, but if you haven't, we discuss the upcoming survey, how the questions are created and how the process works, as well as additional tools the union will use to understand the desires of the pilot population as we get closer to entering negotiations.
