What happens when the mission changes, but the drive to keep moving forward remains?Combat Vet Vision welcomes Giovanni Perez, a retired U.S. Army combat engineer, wounded veteran, adaptive motorcycle and off-road competitor, and veteran advocate whose post-service journey has taken him from Afghanistan to some of the toughest terrain in off-road racing.Giovanni lost his left arm while serving with the Army in Afghanistan. After returning home, motorcycles became more than recreation. Through adaptation, determination and the veteran community, riding became another place to find challenge, camaraderie and purpose.Giovanni has competed in desert and off-road events including the Baja 500, Baja 1000 and Vegas to Reno. His adaptive riding includes motorcycle modifications that allow him to ride with a prosthetic left arm. In the 2018 Baja 1000, he was part of a six-rider team that officially finished the legendary event. His story also extends beyond racing. Giovanni has been connected with the Warrior Built Foundation, an organization serving combat veterans and wounded service members through vocational and recreational opportunities, including fabrication, mechanics and off-road racing. He has also participated in Wounded Warrior Project advocacy activities supporting issues affecting post-9/11 veterans. In this episode, we explore:• How the combat-engineer mindset can translate into adapting to life after a major injury• The transition from military service to finding a new mission• Returning to motorcycles after losing his left arm• Adaptive riding and the challenge of desert and off-road competition• The role of camaraderie, machines and racing in rebuilding purpose• Why continuing to serve and advocate for other veterans mattersThis conversation is not simply about overcoming an injury. It is about adaptation, teamwork and discovering that purpose can take a different form when the original mission changes.GuestGiovanni PerezRetired U.S. Army Combat EngineerWounded Veteran | Adaptive Motorcycle & Off-Road Competitor | Veteran AdvocateGuest LinksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/giovanni.perez.353803LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/giovanni-perez-54847797Instagram (@oggio31): https://www.instagram.com/oggio31/Warrior Built Foundation: https://www.warriorbuilt.org/Featured ResourceDrive On, Echo Bravo ProductionsA documentary project following combat veterans competing in the Baja 1000.https://echobravoproductions.com/drive-onCrisis SupportIf you or a veteran you know is in crisis, contact the Veterans Crisis Line. RaeAnn Tucker joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to discuss food safety, monthly CPR classes, free gun locks, the monthly outreach event at the Henry County Fair, ticks, safe sharps disposal, and insurance navigators. June is National Safety Month, and the Henry and Stark County Health Departments, along with First Choice Healthcare, are offering free gun locks at clinics in Kewanee, Colona, and Toulon to help reduce gun-related injuries and deaths. Residents are encouraged to pick up locks weekdays between 8 AM and 4 PM. Firearm suicide claims 64 American lives daily, and keeping both guns and ammunition locked can sharply reduce these risks. Free gun locks are also available via the Veterans Crisis Line—call 988 and press 1, chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net, or text 838255. For more safety news, the departments are hosting free blood pressure checks, sharps disposal, and insurance help at the Henry County Fair on June 17th and 18th. The departments also offer Lyme disease screening and tick testing and are expanding access to safe disposal kiosks for used medical sharps at six locations. Monthly CPR classes and food safety guidance for local vendors round out the health focus. More details at henrystarkhealth.com.

A sensitive content warning: this episode includes discussion of substance addiction, mental health struggles, suicide attempts, and recovery. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or at risk of harm, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 in the U.S., call or text 988 to connect with a trained counselor, or use the online chat through the 988 Lifeline. It supports people experiencing suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, mental health crises, and substance use concerns. To honor May being Mental Health Awareness month we invited Drew Motiv to share his story of transformation through addiction, mental health struggles, and surviving suicide attempts, in this episode. Now a motivational speaker and founder of the Divine Family Movement, Drew opens up about the darkest chapters of his life and how he found his way toward healing, self-belief, and purpose. We explore what it truly means to hit rock bottom, the isolation that can come with addiction and recovery, and the difficult work of rebuilding your identity after trauma. Drew reflects on the internal battles he faced, the moments that changed his path, and how he now uses his lived experience to help others feel less alone. Beth and Cathy also talk with Drew about the emotional complexity of recovery, learning to trust yourself again, coping with lingering anxiety and darkness, and turning personal pain into public advocacy. His story is both deeply personal and broadly resonant for anyone navigating mental health challenges, addiction, or the long road back to themselves. In this episode, we discuss: Drew Motiv's journey through addiction and mental health struggles What “rock bottom” looked like in his life Surviving suicide attempts and the emotional aftermath The role of isolation, honesty, and support in recovery Rebuilding trust in yourself after trauma How recovery is not linear Turning painful experiences into purpose-driven advocacy Founding the Divine Family Movement Redefining strength, especially for men facing stigma around vulnerability What Drew wants listeners who are struggling to hear right now If you or someone you know is struggling, please use the resources below.  Drew's Links: Follow Drew Motiv on Instagram @Drew_Motiv divinefamilymovement.com Resources:  Need support? Sleep breaks down, pain turns constant, and the mind keeps running like it never got the memo that the mission is over. This conversation follows what it looks like to claw your way back when the body is hurting, the nights are loud, and isolation starts to feel normal. Rowdie McMahon shares her experience as an Air Force nurse deployed to Afghanistan, including the relentless pace and mass casualty reality, and how that pressure followed her home. She opens up about chronic pain, years on heavy medications, and the slow work of tapering off while staying engaged with mental health support. From there, the story shifts to what finally helped: Wounded Warrior Project programs, small steps back into community, and a surprising turning point through racing, building cars with other veterans, and putting 988 and the Veterans Crisis Line on the car as part of the mission. Timestamps: 00:02:15: Mass casualty chaos and zero time to process it all 00:09:00: Nightmares, sleep fights, and realizing it is time to get help 00:19:08: Not all wounds are visible, the call that opened the door to support 00:26:09: Pickleball, sunlight, and the first step back into community 00:53:03: Putting 988 on a race car and why racing saved her life Links & Resources Veteran Suicide & Crisis Line: Dial 988, then press 1 Follow Rowdie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rowdie988/ Wounded Warrior Project: https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ Transcript View the transcript for this episode.
