Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton Performs First Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton has introduced Ion robotic bronchoscopy, a cutting-edge technology for early lung cancer detection. Led by Dr. Kimtuyen Nguyen, the hospital performed its first procedures on Jan. 8, offering a minimally invasive method to biopsy hard-to-reach lung nodules without incisions, reducing pain and recovery time. This innovation enhances local cancer care for South Hall, Gwinnett, Jackson, and Barrow Counties. NGMC Gainesville introduced the technology 18 months ago, and now Braselton expands access to life-saving care close to home. STORY 2: Lilburn man gets two life sentences in prison for raping woman in jealous rage Santos Edgardo Amaya-Bonilla, 52, of Lilburn, was sentenced to two consecutive life terms for sexually assaulting a female acquaintance after becoming jealous of her interaction with a male co-worker in March 2020. Convicted of three counts of rape, five counts of aggravated sodomy, and two counts of aggravated assault, Amaya-Bonilla's violent acts spanned several days, including threats, physical assaults, and repeated sexual violence at gunpoint. The Gwinnett County jury delivered a swift verdict, with District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson stating the victim received the justice she deserved. STORY 3: You can still enjoy Georgia's state parks during the winter months Georgia’s state parks offer stunning winter escapes with frost-covered trails, misty lake sunrises, and cozy cabins. The “Chill Deal” provides 33% off stays of three nights or more until Feb. 25 (exclusions apply). Enjoy heated cabins, glamping yurts, or campgrounds with hot showers. Highlights include fishing at Seminole State Park, birdwatching at Florence Marina, hiking near the Okefenokee at Laura S. Walker, and scenic golf at Jack Hill. Explore Magnolia Springs’ natural beauty, Crooked River’s coastal wildlife, or Cloudland Canyon’s frozen waterfalls. Book your winter retreat at www.GaStateParks.org/Reservations. The new members—Cheryl Neal, Cole Porter, Donnette Sturdivant, Jan Lupuloff, and Lindsay Taylor—bring diverse expertise to support Rainbow Village’s three-year plan to double its capacity and enhance programs. CEO Melanie Conner praised their talents and commitment during this pivotal growth phase. The organization also expressed gratitude to outgoing board members for their years of service. STORY 5: GCPS celebrates outstanding school counselors Gwinnett County Public Schools celebrated National School Counseling Week by honoring its top counselors during the 2025 GCPS Counselor of the Year awards. Kim Hatcher, the Public Affairs Director of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick in the studio for the Around Atlanta segment of the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio Podcast to talk about hidden gems and activities in Georgia's state parks. As a Smyrna native and graduate from the University of Georgia, Hatcher has deep ties to Georgia. Growing up, she and her family were avid campers and hikers and spent most of their free time outdoors. Now Kim gets to explore her passion for Georgia's parks by sharing all the must-see places and activities the parks have to offer. “If we have learned anything from the pandemic, it is how important parks are for people's wellbeing,” said Hatcher. “Being outdoors is good for the mind, body and soul, and luckily we have over 84,000 acres in Georgia to explore.” Tips for enjoying Georgia State Parks Many popular parks in Georgia like Tallulah Gorge get crowded on the weekends. Try going during the week to enjoy the space of nature. Many parks offer overnight stay opportunities, so nature is just outside the door and activities are all around. Parks offer RV camps and hookups, private campsites with showers, as well as a variety of recently renovated and newly built cabins. A new available experience is the “glamping” yurt, which is a combination of a cabin and camping experience. They feature locking doors, furniture, back porches with seating, picnic tables, fire rings, grills, futons and bunk beds and bathhouses with hot showers. This is a great option for families who want to enjoy camping in style!  Georgia State Parks are known for hiking and fishing, but they also offer other recreational activities like mini-golf, birding, archery, kayaking, paddle boarding and biking. Enjoy nature without all the crowds by visiting some lesser-known, activity-filled parks. Panola Mountain Park is located in Stockbridge just southeast of Atlanta and is a great spot for those who enjoy biking and hiking along paved trails. They offer bike rentals and small lakes for fishing. Don Carter State Park on Lake Lanier has great hiking trails, cabin rentals, camping grounds and access to lake recreations. Hard Labor Creek is east of Atlanta and offers cabins as well as guided kayak tours, guided hikes, kids programs and a golf course. Chattahoochee Bend in the Newnan area has hiking, camping and cabins along the Chattahoochee River. Cartersville's Etowah Indian Mounds State Park protects native mounds from over 1,000 years ago. They have artifact museums, ranger programs and great exercise trails. Pickett's Mill Battlefield in Dallas has over 4 miles of walking trails and a Civil War battlefield monument. New opportunities in Georgia State Parks Those up for a challenge can join different clubs across the state, the most popular being the Canyon Climbers Club. Memberships are $20 and climbers are encouraged to wear their club shirts when hiking. Canyon Climbers are challenged to go down into Cloudland Canyon and climb Tallulah Gorge, Amicalola Falls and many others. Once completed, members receive a certificate of completion. The newest club is called Tails on Trails which encourages hikers to bring their dogs.  State Park guests pay a $5 fee for parking when visiting, but more frequent visitors can purchase a $50 annual pass. Sup Doc kicks off the jams w ROCKTOBER a month long line-up of music docs and great guests. We hit the stage with The Devil and Daniel Johnston with our guest, musician Kip Uhlhorn! The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a 2005 documentary film about the noted American musician Daniel Johnston. It chronicles Johnston's life from childhood up to the present, with an emphasis on his experiences with bipolar disorder, and how it manifested itself in demonic self-obsession. The film was directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, edited by Tyler Hubby, and produced by Henry S. Rosenthal.Kip Uhlhorn formed Cloudland Canyon in 2002. The first Cloudland Canyon release, Requiems Der Natur, 2002-2004 was released by Tee Pee in 2006. Cloudland Canyon quickly set about releasing a number of other releases and touring that same year, most notably a single track collaboration 12”/LP entitled Exterminating Angel with Chicago musician Lichens in 2007 on Holy Mountain. In 2007, the band was signed to Kranky and released their first proper album Silver Tongued Sisyphus. In 2008, the band released another collaborative 12” with Mythical Beast on Not Not Fun, as well as their second full length, Lie in Light on Kranky. The latter was chosen as one of top 25 albums of the year 2008 by the Magnet magazine. Cloudland Canyon subsequently moved to Holy Mountain, where the band began their own imprint of Holy Mountain (Intercoastal Artists) for 2010’s album Fin Eaves, which has become their best-received work to date, landing on numerous year-end lists. They went on tour with the Flaming Lips (whom Uhlhorn has collaborated extensively with) as well as with Interpol and Bear in Heaven. Members of the Arcade Fire even name checked the band.Uhlhorn has also played in several other successful groups and bands during this time, including King Khan & the Shrines, Panthers (Dim Mak, Vice), Pharaohs (100% Silk, Stone's Throw, Intercoastal Artists), Eden Express (Holy Mountain), and Tav Falco's Panther Burns He has also played guitar live and on albums by Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, including Chatham's Crimson Grail, which was staged at Lincoln Center. Cloudland Canyon’s ranks have included close friend Jerry Fuchs (also drummer for !!!, LCD Soundsystem, Maserati, Turing Machine, Moby) who died in 2009. Most recently, memphis drummer Ross Johnson (Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Alex Chilton) has joined the band.
