Text your thoughts and questions!Content Warning: Today's conversation involves mention of medical trauma and near-death experiences. If these are triggers for you, I gently encourage you to wait to listen or proceed carefully. Grief is so much more than losing a loved one. We can grieve after breakups and when we purposely choose to change; we can even grieve the loss of opportunity and parts of ourselves as we grow and age. But when society has conditioned us to grit it out when faced with something difficult, we realize that not only do we not know how to grieve, we don't know how to support others through their grief. Janice Scholl joins me on the podcast today to share her personal story of navigating crisis and grief and the value of having support from others during challenging times. This week, episode 221 of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast is about how to help people dealing with trauma and grief.Janice Scholl is a podcast host, speaker, and former commercial banker. She spends her time talking to parents and experts about raising strong, confident, resilient girls, as well as family finances and family-driven career breaks. Her podcast, Raising Middle School Girls, helps parents worldwide support their tween and teen girls navigate common challenges such as friendships, family communication, confidence, social media, and so much more. In this episode of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast, Janice shares her perspective on grief as a fundamental identity change and she gives you actionable advice you can take to recognize and cope with grief, and how to support others who are grieving.  Janice and I cover the following topics:Having the emotional maturity to hold space for someone's emotions without trying to “fix” the situation. Both devastation and gratitude can coexist; finding joy and appreciation comes from knowing the opposite. Three things you can do to help someone who can't verbalize what they need in a time of crisis.Let go of your fear of getting it wrong and take action with the right intentions. Hi Steph. I worked as a Travel Manager at my previous company, however, it was a created position and I used a combination of Concur, Expedia, Hotels.com, National Car rental and all the other sites. I loved this position but it all went away during Covid. Now, I'd like to get back into it but everything I'm interested in requires some Sabre experience. I know it's easy and I know I could do it but do you think it's worth taking the 60 hour course with The Travel Institute? Is there a better place to obtain this training? It could add a few lines on my resume and I'm great with self-study. $149 doesn't seem high for getting some experience. What are your thoughts? Thanks for your time! :) —Anonymous 2. Hi Steph. I have a diploma from Penn Foster and when I look at the CTA, I feel like I've already done all of the same lessons. Is it better to have one of these certifications over the diploma I've already received? Are these just better recognized and received by people in the industry and clients? It seems like these have a more elevated status over my diploma. Is that the case? —Anonymous 3. I refunded a non refundable ticket by accident. The agency paid it back but now I'm on the hook for over $6000. The airline does not reverse the transaction so the traveler has a credit. Have you ever worked with this? Thanks to you all for your great questions from week to week. 1) How to navigate clients' loyalty programs: what are the logistics of ensuring they receive loyalty benefits, qualifying nights, miles/points? 2) Being an Agent vs. an Operator: If I want to book FIT travel, how can I safely curate customized itineraries as a travel agent and not stray into accidentally being considered a tour operator? 3) Project Management Platforms! Do agents typically manage their workflow with their host agency provided CRM program only, or are there other project management platforms that are popular with travel agents? We do this every week! When talking about backing off of fasting and restrictive eating and eating more nutritious calories to be more healthy and more active, are we rejecting the widely validated health benefits of things like ketone production and fasting-induced autophagy? Absolutely not, but we might want to reflect how restrictive eating benefits those with metabolic damage more so than those with metabolic health.  In this show I share insights on the topic from numerous experts, including #listentothesisson primal OG Mark Sisson, Mike Mutzel of High Intensity Health, my longtime primal colleague Dr. Lindsay Taylor, podcaster and author (and deep dietary experimenter) Melanie Avalon, Dr. Cate Shanahan, Health coach and former podcast guest Ryan Baxter (who consumed 600 extra calories per day for a year and didn't gain weight, a great validation of the additive model of energy expenditure), and also quotes from an article about the energy deficiency struggles of USA national champion distance runner Elise Cranny - and how she ate her way back to top form. Listen in and learn how to best strategize the use of fasting, low-carb/keto, and intense exercise and how to avoid the pitfalls of energy deficiency and overly-stressful lifestyle circumstances.    TIMESTAMPS: We get into controversy calling into question some of the many pillars of the ancestral health movement. [01:25] Getting away from the standard American diet of nutrient deficient processed foods hamper energy production. [04:35] Folks who are in the lowest metabolic health category will benefit the most from cleaning up their diets. [07:48] Triglycerides to HDL ratio is the single most important category in your blood work to watch to track heart disease risk factors. [09:43] Even a healthy, athletic, lean, fit person could potentially be experiencing some adverse effects of the chronically minimal insulin in the diet. [13:55] When we are trying to optimize the model of ancestral health, it is important to reflect how some of these things apply to modern life. [15:05] We're asking way more from our bodies, from our minds and from our stress response than the ancestral, hunter gatherer. [20:53] Brad is comparing and contrasting expert insights between the energy balance concept and strict ancestral boilerplate. [26:30] The research validates that exercise boosts autophagy quicker and more intensely than fasting. [29:10] Most of the benefits of fasting come from calorie restriction plus a heightened awareness of what you are putting in your mouth. [33:20] There's a difference in the way different carbs and different fats are metabolized. [40:11] Overtraining and not eating enough can really throw you off.  [42:08] You have to be healthy to be an elite athlete. [45:55] There's no doubt that the restricted diets aren't for everybody. [52:28] Fat is survival and nutritious carbs are ideal for maximum cellular energy production and turning up all those dials. Nourishing good foods shouldn't taste bland and boring otherwise, what's the point? Her philosophy is founded on the belief that we can make healthy taste good to support your body from preconception to postpartum.   In this episode Joy and Lindsay discuss: Lindsay's journey to becoming a doula.  The hole she feels doulas fill in the modern health care approach to birthing.  Why preconception nutrition should be part of pregnancy planning.  Lindsay's favourite prenatal vitamin brands.  Breaking down top pregnancy and nutrition myths.  The process behind how Lindsay wrote The Food Doula Cookbook. Lindsay's favourite recipe: The Glowing Mama Healing Stew!    This episode will give you the foundation you need to lovingly nourish your body whether you're planning a pregnancy, currently pregnant, or in that 4th trimester postpartum period. Lindsay is a wealth of knowledge who will inspire you to eat a wide range of pregnancy superfoods so that you and baby are as happy and healthy as possible.    Episode Highlights: How Lindsay's pregnancy experiences led to becoming a doula.  Why she believes adults deserve more support during the transition to parenthood. How doulas help fill the missing role of the “village” in supporting new parents.  The way her doula training impacted the recipes she created for her cookbook.  Why practicality needs to be balanced with nutrition and deliciousness in postpartum cooking.  How nutrient intake impacts the way the body recovers postpartum. The importance of caring for mom during the birth process, not just baby. How doulas offer options for care during pregnancy and the birthing process.  Lindsay's nutrition recommendations for the preconception phase.  How nutrition can support the production of healthy eggs and how that impacts pregnancy outcomes.  Tips to add rich sources of folate to your meals and snacks.  The best time to start a prenatal multivitamin and how to choose the best one for your needs. The importance of antioxidants and fat in the preconception diet.  Lindsay's favourite fat-loving preconception foods!  How what you eat during pregnancy impacts the health of your baby.  Why multivitamins are a supplement to a whole foods diet.  Lindsay's top foods to support the body during pregnancy, trimester by trimester.  The importance of listening to your own intuition around hunger and nutrition.  The role of choline in baby's brain development. Why DHA is one of the most important nutrients for pregnancy.
