Fashioncast®Episode #52, October 8, 2024Dr. Alison Matthews David, Toxic Textiles (Part 2): Fashion's History of Silent ConsentThis episode is Part 2 of a three-part series on toxic textiles and features Dr. Alison Matthews David, award-winning author, professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, and fashion activist. Dr. Matthew David's ground-breaking fashion history classic Fashion Victims, will mark its tenth anniversary in 2025 and has become the go to art fashion history text in fashion colleges around the globe.Tying together over a hundred years of the fashion industry's indifference to the toxic manufacturing of apparel, Matthews David explains in spell-binding detail the dangers of fashion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For example, she highlights damning evidence that the industry was aware of the effects of mercury poisoning in workers for 200 years! It's fascinating to listen to Matthews David's passion about the comparison of toxicity in apparel between the 20th and 21st centuries. Unfortunately, given advances in plastics and the chemicals used to manufacture synthetic textiles, not much has changed--fashion is still one of the most polluting industries on earth.Matthews David does concede there is a small movement within the industry about the overuse of cheap toxins. Fashion college students seem adamant about making meaningful progress by insisting on the use of non-toxic fabrics in design. Further, a slew of upstart fashion brands is manufacturing non-toxic clothing and making inroads in educating the public and the industry about the real health effects of toxic apparel. When Matthews David isn't teaching, researching, and writing, she can be found coordinating collaborations with museums about the history of toxicity in fashion. Currently, she has an exhibit at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Canada. While the use of toxic textiles is a grave issue within the fashion industry, understanding the history of the ongoing problem is critical to gain perspective and make future changes. Matthews David exhaustive research methodology and prolific authorship on the topic continues to be a godsend to the industry and will undoubtedly prove to be extremely helpful in solving this menacing problem. A People Prepared - Gospel of Matthew - David Herrington - (03/10/24) by Jubilee Church
Winding through questions of philosophy, science, and meaning making, this week's episode brings together vital thoughts on what it means to live an embodied life in an entangled world. Guest Merlin Sheldrake shares the motivations that drew him to study fungi and the complex ways this study has shaped his life and thought. As Merlin shares, “an account of life that doesn't include fungi is an account of a living world that doesn't exist.” Our relationship with fungi is non-negotiable. Merlin invites listeners to pay attention to what this relationship means and how it shapes not only our lives, but the entanglement of life across the world. With this, Merlin also shares the ways fungal life offers a diversity of expressions and possibilities – offering up the perspective that the diversity and complexity of relationship and expression is what makes life fertile. Across the episode, Merlin and Ayana contemplate the history and meaning of science, and come to see life as a process and a relationship. The meaning we make does not come out of a vacuum, but rather out of relationship. Life itself, in its many forms, is improvisational. Understanding this, we are left with the provocation: How might we speak to the world, rather than about it? Merlin is a biologist and author of Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures, a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, and winner of the Royal Society Book Prize and the Wainwright Prize. Merlin is a research associate of the Vrije University Amsterdam, and works with the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks and the Fungi Foundation. A keen brewer and fermenter, he is fascinated by the relationships that arise between humans and more-than-human organisms. (merlinsheldrake.com)Music by Matthewdavid. “No organism is an island.” As Sandor Katz reminds us in this delightful and informative episode, all life on earth is deeply interdependent. Though modern food systems alienate us from our environments and from the ways, we cannot totally sever ourselves from the environments and nutrients that make life possible. Sandor shows that alienation and disconnection will not free us. Rather, settling into the overlapping and diverse entwinement of the more-than-human world may bring connection and sustenance in close relation to our food production. The story of humanity is embedded in our food, embedded in the daily tasks and practical measures that sustain us. This conversation bubbles over with wisdom, as Sandor shares stories and lessons from his decades of experience experimenting with the art of fermentation. Fermentation is the manifestation of biodiversity, and as Sandor emphasizes, the study of fermentation is as much a study of our own tastes and cultural transitions as it is a study of our environments. Sandor Ellix Katz is a fermentation revivalist. He is the author of five books: Wild Fermentation; The Art of Fermentation; The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved; Fermentation as Metaphor; and his latest, Fermentation Journeys. Sandor's books, along with the hundreds of fermentation workshops he has taught around the world, have helped to catalyze a broad revival of the fermentation arts. A self-taught experimentalist who lives in rural Tennessee, the New York Times calls him “one of the unlikely rock stars of the American food scene.” Sandor is the recipient of a James Beard award and other honors. Our next guest has scored everything from comic book adaptations to award-winning documentaries. He is a Filipino-American composer who has scored some of the most exciting projects of the last few years. His dark synth and guitar-driven work was heard on the Russo Brothers' adaptation of the acclaimed comic 'Deadly Class'. And his emotional and poignant music was featured in the powerful Peabody Award-winning docu-series 'Surviving R. Kelly'. For the latter, he also took home an ASCAP 2020 Screen Award.Born to Filipinx immigrants, his family taught him music at a young age. His curiosity would lead him to play in bands and to study film scoring at USC's prestigious Scoring For Motion Pictures and Television program. He would go on to be mentored by and collaborate with Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther) and Theodore Shapiro (Bombshell). With the former, he co-composed the A24 film starring Chance The Rapper, 'SLICE'. He recently scored the Adele Lim directed Joy Ride and I'm so excited to talk with him on the podcast. Jesus' Baptism - The Gospel Of Matthew - David Herrington - (12/04/22) by Jubilee Church
Lawyers are taught that logic is their best friend. BUT, in the real world, human beings make their most important decisions based on EMOTION, not LOGIC. So how do you present your facts in a way that taps into the genuine emotions of the decision makers? Come on people, you know this: A good, true, & well told story! Helping us get Set For Sentencing, and joyfully continuing our ongoing conversation on legal narrative, is story expert, Matthew David. As a screenwriter and Dr. Randy Olson's right hand man, Matt is deep into the world of narrative. He knows the "ABT" (AND, BUT, THEREFORE) template like the back of his hand. Even better, Matt formulated his own expression of the ABT, Dr. Olson now affectionately calls “the Matt Template” which goes like this: Heaven AND heaven, BUT hell, THEREFORE action! Now, let's see how that works in the world of sentencing storytelling (spoiler alert – it works like magic). This episode is not only entertaining AF, it's filled with practical advice on how to effectively and powerfully communicate your client's story to any decision-maker. IN THIS EPISODE: The “Matt Template” & how it will instantly allow you to begin crafting your compelling case narrative; The “And, But, Therefore” narrative template and examples; The “ordinary world” in the hero's journey – what and why it is; The two levels of hero's journey that exist in criminal case narrative; Somewhere Over the Rainbow – the quintessential musical manifestion of “heaven” in narrative structure; What it means to “amplify the pain” and why it is essential you do it in every story; The role of hero and sage in criminal sentencing stories –and how to tell the difference; Why the “hero's journey”, embodied in the ABT structure, resonates with every human being; Using Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, The Hunger Games, and the Matrix to illustrate all of these points; Our favorite screenwriting and story book recommendations. Jesus' Job Description - The Gospel of Matthew - David Herrington - (11/27/22) by Jubilee Church
Long Island-based author and humorist Matthew David Brozik is on Finding Favorites to talk about his favorite things - potato chips, sleeping and super heroes. More specifically, the last ten minutes of the 1992 movie Glengarry, Glen Ross. We also talk about REM, XTC and TMBG... and TLC. Matthew's new book Odder Space is available on Amazon in print and digital (though he'd really rather you choose the print copy). Odder Space is a humorous upper middle grade sci-fi novel with awe-inspiring spaceships, belligerent aliens, phlazer battles, pseudoscientific gobbledygook, and an artificial intelligence with a serious morale problem... but also spunk, heart, and some important life lessons. Mostly it's just a lot of fun.
