This week, we talk to Stuart Swezey & Bruce Licher, who produced and worked on the Desolation Center series of shows that took bands like minutemen, Swans, Redd Kross, Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and Einsturzende Neubauten and put them in locations such as the Mojave Desert as a reaction to the omnipresent police violence against punk rock kids. We talked about the Desolation Center documentary that Swezey directed, the iconic visuals that Licher created for the events, having the legendary artist Chris Burden as your teacher, the healing power of Throbbing Gristle, how to source school buses to take punk rockers to the desert, fake ids, Savage Republic, Glenn Branca and the No New York LP, Redd Kross getting lost in the desert, violence coming from rednecks, the notion of selling out and not repeating oneself, the impact of D. Boon on the scene, Survival Research Laboratories, Lydia Lunch, being naive, Action News, the eventual change in the 80s music underground, psychedelics, early punk clubs like The Masque and Brave Dog, NEA grants for industrial noise music events, and we're also joined by surprise guests, ML Compton and Skip King who are featured in the documentary and describe what it was like being a passenger into the unknown. So party with me punker, as we head into the desert at night on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.DESOLATION CENTER:https://www.desolationcenter.com/SEE THE FILM IN MAY 2024 IN L.A.:https://www.instagram.com/dktrfest/STUART SWEZEY:https://www.amokbooks.com/BRUCE LICHER:https://www.independentprojectrecords.com/LIMITED EDITION REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE SHIRT:revolutionspermovie.bandcamp.comREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Who smoked more: academics like John Cage, La Monte Young and Vladamir Ussachevsky- or the underground scenesters, like Glenn Branca, Arthur Russel and Laurie Anderson? Why is turntablist Christian Marclay on the cover of "Transfigured New York," but not in the book, even though she interviewed him multiple times? Could AI design be to blame? How did the old guard of "New Music" feel about the commodification of computer-based music production four decades ago? In the 1980s, Brooke Wentz hosted a radio show in the middle of the night that focused on experimental music, which was developing all around her in New York City. Over the course of a decade, many of the artists Brooke played on that show would join her in the studio. Her journalism days are through, (now she works on the business side of the industry) but she has just released a book with selected interviews back in the day called “Transfigured New York: Interviews with Experimental Artists and Musicians," available now from Columbia University Press. This may be a bit of a shock to you, but I'll say it- I'm a big fan of oral history interviews, and I'm a big fan of experimental music. I'm pleased to feature Brooke and her work here today, which includes a couple of clips from her interviews (with Morton Subotnik and John Lurie, respectively). She joins me today from a working holiday somewhere in Mexico. The artwork for this episode is a drawing by my kid Camille, based on a photo from "back when" sent to me by today's guest. Terrific. Adrian Utley is one of the most versatile and creative musicians the UK has produced. His work with artists such as Jeff Beck, Patti Smith and Glenn Branca is testament to this. Shooting to prominence in the mid 1990s with Portishead, Adrian's beautifully judged, nuanced playing - with its unique jazz and soul sensibilities - set the band apart from their contemporaries in what would become known as the trip-hop scene. Dummy, Portishead's debut album, would go multi-platinum. The band continues to have a lasting influence in terms of production values, musicianship and sheer style. Adrian accepted an invitation to join me for this episode of Life on the Fretboard after an online conversation about our shared love of the work of Fred Frith - a pioneer in the improvised and exploratory music scene. Shortly after, I was invited to film an original 1958 Gibson Flying V. Those of you familiar with my work will understand my trepidation to go it alone with a guitar that was so far out of my comfort zone, so I asked Adrian if he'd like to join me in exploring one of the rarest and pointiest electric guitars known to humanity. I was a little taken aback at the speed with which he accepted. I made a video of us exploring that Flying V: https://youtu.be/VM95mN7eDC0 Once we had finished with the pointy beast, we sat down to record this conversation. Adrian shares his memories of working with Jeff Beck and Glenn Branca and we talk about Adrian's love of all guitars, from vintage L-5s to dumpster-find acoustics. We also chat about learning to love limitations, the Fender Jazzmaster, the best footwear for wah-wah pedal usage, and that solo from the song "Glory Box." Here's a reminder if you need one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnMTK8EdsOc I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Be advised there is adult language throughout. Based in London, Tantrum Zentrum's members draw from the UK, Canada and the USA, music having brought them together like a magnet while living in the megapolis. Inspired by early 70s krautrock and late 70s New York no-wave bands, they deliver sonic dissonance and poppy hooks with great energy and style... imagine Killing Joke on happy pills. This is the second of three songs recently recorded with renowned producer Steve Evans (Robert Plant, Siousxie Sioux, Goldfrapp). The earlier-released single 'Der Leiermann' is performed in German. And while the new single is performed in English, it contains a few Bosnian and corrupted German words for emphasis. Made up of Vaat Dafuq (vocals, guitar), Sabine de Rousseau (guitar, vocals), Valhalla Schimmer (bass guitar) and Kur Putchnik (drums). Tantrum Zentrum makes hi-energy post punk interlaced with funk, goth and krautrock influences. "'Don't Be A Fascist' is a wartime love story. Inspired by the 80s Yugoslavian pop hit 'Fa Fa Fašista' (performed by Sarajevo's Plavi Orkestar), the song tells a story as old as time itself: boy meets girl, and they fall in love. Then their country gets occupied by the German forces of the Third Reich, and the girl falls for the tall, handsome enemy soldier in a magnificent uniform. Needless to say, the boy is furious!" says Vaat Dafuq. "We chose a bombastic title that may resonate with many even now. The release is accompanied by a humorous ‘explainer'-style video that shouldn't be taken too seriously." With analogue synths, distortion and hypnotic drums played with Devo-esque precision, the band's music shares elements of Krautrock pioneers Neu! and Faust, along with goth and no-wave experimentalists such as Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca and Theoretical Girls.
Karl D'Silva is a fascinating figure in the UK underground music scene. His dark electronic pop songs are both subtly slippery and crushingly direct, and he's blessed with the kind of powerhouse singing voice that you just have to hear to believe. He's also prolific as a saxophonist and collaborator in far more overtly experimental contexts, working with Helm, VANISHING, Rian Treanor, Ex-Easter Island Head, and a million others. Here, Karl and I talk a lot about the voice: finding one's own, overcoming shame, and some of Karl's unusual warm-ups and recording techniques. We also talk about Glenn Branca, early industrial music, and the unique realm of the Northern UK.

Susan Stenger - Band of Susans - in conversation with David Eastaugh Band of Susans was an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1986 and active until 1996. It originally consisted of Robert Poss (guitar/vocals), Susan Stenger (bass/vocals), Ron Spitzer (drums), with Susan Lyall (guitar), Susan Tallman (guitar), and Alva Rogers (vocals). The band would undergo several permutations over the years, usually involving three guitarists. Poss, Stenger, and Spitzer were the band's core members throughout its duration. They originated in the New York noise rock scene, but due to their layered guitar sound were sometimes seen as the American counterparts to the UK shoegazing bands and also drew influence from modern experimental composers Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca.

David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie, was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, Bowie is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He was acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, and his music and stagecraft had a significant impact on popular music. In this episode we selected two tracks from each of the 25 records Bowie revealed were his favorite to Vanity Fair, for their November 2003 issue. Brooklyn trio Upper Wilds features Dan Friel (ex-Parts & Labor) on guitar, vocals, and effects, bassist Jason Binnick, and drummer Jeff Ottenbacher and is really exceptional at making fuzzy-noisy songs with big pop riffs, usually concealed within explosive sonic textures. They've now released the third in a series of albums about the planets, Venus, and the band is continuing their way further out as they go, planning to release a seven inch when they get to Pluto. Friel confides that he's still learning how to be a singer-songwriter after starting with interesting and possibly noisy textures. He prefers using the open tunings of Glenn Branca, tremolo picking, and effects that can ring and chime forever. Friel says that the lyrics just write themselves, themed around the planet named for the god of love, which also happens to be a “backwards-spinning hellscape that melts every camera we send there…” Hear through the noise to the melodies as Upper Wilds plays very fast love songs from Venus, remotely from their practice space. - Caryn Havlik Set List: “Love Song #5,” “Love Song #3,” “Love Song #1” Watch "Love Song #5": Watch "Love Song #3": Watch "Love Song #1":

From playing alongside Glenn Branca in seminal band Theoretical Girls to producing the first Sonic Youth album, Wharton Tiers has his fingerprints all over the late-70s/early-80s New York scene. Add to that his work with A Band and Glorious Strangers, and Tiers' discography provides the perfect entry point to the visceral world that is no wave. Since then, Tiers has also gone on to produce such beloved and acclaimed albums as Dinosaur Jr.'s "You're Living All Over Me" and Helmet's "Strap It On." Today, Wharton Tiers remains active with the Wharton Tiers Ensemble, Superduperlooper, his solo piano work, and the brand new Wharton's Expanding Jazz band. Player. Artist. And genuinely one of the most interesting people we've met! Born in Los Angeles into a musical family, Alan Deremo has had a long and varied career as a bass player and more recently as a producer and composer as well. His touring and recording credits include stints with Colin Hay (Men at Work), Belinda Carlisle, Nathaniel Rateliff, John Denver, the Captain and Tennille, Tony Hawk's Boom Boom Huck Jam, Glenn Frey, Dave Alvin, Eric Marienthal, Vince Gill and Amy Grant, Glenn Branca, Jesse Colin Young, and many others. His scoring work has appeared on CBS Sports, ESPN, Fuel TV, Sierra Club Films and elsewhere. Alan has produced over a dozen independent album releases over the last few years. During the pandemic Alan has stayed busy with various studio projects, contributing bass tracks to projects by artists from all over the world as well as working on ongoing production assignments. The most recent of those is Illuminations from Nashville artist Sean Della Croce, due for release in late February on the Pasadena/Concord label. In addition to all of the above, Alan has been an inveterate tinkerer from an early age, progressing from hacking up his first bass (a 60's Teisco) to extensive modification and building and finishing at least half dozen instruments in recent years. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bestbassgear/message
On today's episode I talk to musician Thurston Moore. Originally from Coral Gables, Florida, Thurston eventually ended up in New York in the late-70s, just as a vibrant musical scene was exploding, which included post-punk, new wave, no wave, jazz and numerous other styles. After playing in a few different bands, he met Kim Gordon and they eventually formed Sonic Youth in 1981. Over the next three decades, Sonic Youth released 15 amazing albums and became one of the most well-known indie rock bands. Outside of Sonic Youth, Thurston founded and runs the Ecstatic Peace! record label, has collaborated with everyone from Glenn Branca to Yoko Ono, and started the band Chelsea Light Moving in 2012. In addition to all this, Thurston has recorded a number of albums under his own name, and his latest By the Fire was just released at the end of September as part of the Daydream Library Series. Band of Susans with Robert Poss talking about life in music with David Eastaugh Band of Susans was an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1986 and active until 1996. It originally consisted of Robert Poss(guitar/vocals), Susan Stenger (bass/vocals), Ron Spitzer (drums), with Susan Lyall (guitar), Susan Tallman (guitar), and Alva Rogers (vocals).
In the first of two episodes recorded on the same day, Bob and Mike share their favorite songs from New Orleans soul legend Irma Thomas and Yorkshire indie rockers Boyracer, plus play a song from seminal no wave band Theoretical Girls, which started the music careers of Glenn Branca and Wharton Tiers.
During his four decades making music, Thurston Moore has been many things – guitarist, composer, improviser, collaborator, co-founder of the trailblazing rock band Sonic Youth. His new project might be his most ambitious yet. It’s a 3-record set of expansive, guitar-driven sonic meditations called Spirit Counsel. Radical guitarist Thurston Moore and his co-conspirators present these altered states based in guitars, in-studio, and in tribute to some of the musicians and art that have influenced him (i.e. Alice Coltrane, and Glenn Branca.) Watch the session here:

The story of 99 (pronounced “nine nine” and not “ninety-nine”) it's basically the story of Ed Bahlman, a born-and-bred Brooklynite with a strong work ethic and an intense passion for music, especially new and underground music that wasn’t wholly embraced by the mainstream or even alternative establishments. Everything started from a punk clothing store called 99, that later Ed transformed in the infamous record shop, thanks to his incredible selection of obscure and independent rock, reggae and punk music, that later became the ideal launching pad for the homonymous independent record label. The episode features: Y Pants, Liquid Liquid, ESG, Vivien Goldman, Bush Tetras, Maximum Joy, John Cage (in an interview about Glenn Branca) and Glenn Branca.
In this episode, I talk to Sarah Lipstate, a Los Angeles-based composer, and a guitarist. We cover topics such as making a living as a musician today, marketing your work, the things Sarah is currently struggling with, the relationship between her gear and her art, and much more. Biography Sarah Lipstate is a Los Angeles-based composer, most known for Noveller, her solo electric guitar project. Handling the guitar as her muse, Lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it’s housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer. In 2014, Lipstate announced her signing with Fire Records. Fire released Noveller's latest full-length 'Fantastic Planet' in January 2015 and also re-issued Noveller's critically acclaimed albums 'No Dreams' and 'Glacial Glow' in early 2016. She's previously released records on No Fun Productions, Important Records, Weird Forest, Taiga, and her own imprint Saffron Recordings. Noveller has toured with Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, Radiolab, Xiu Xiu, the Jesus Lizard, U.S. Girls, & Aidan Baker. Lipstate has collaborated with several renowned musicians, including JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Manorexia), Carla Bozulich (Evangelista, The Geraldine Fibbers), David Wm. Sims (the Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid), Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth). She has previously performed as a member of Cold Cave, Parts & Labor, and One Umbrella. Lipstate has also participated in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, Ben Frost’s “Music for 6 Guitars” Ensemble, and Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble. Nope, we’re not lampooning anyone (well, bar John Cage) in this episode. This time around we pay our respects to the late great Glenn Branca, and discuss both his own work and his place in the wider scheme of things. The original plan was a family tree but really, it’s more of a bird’s nest, taking in Theatre, Guitar Composition, Neutral Records, the Brian Eno/Mr Burns parallell, and Waterford’s top teenage Sonic Youth based dance routine.
Introduced by a conversation between John Cage and Morton Feldman about the use of portable radios, this episode is a flux of minimalistic pieces, tuned on the same frequencies thanks to the use of the pitch slider on a couple of technics 1210 turntables. The episode features: John Cage & Morton Feldman, Pauline Oliveros, Philip Glass, Lawrence Weiner, Franco Battiato, Steve Reich, Rhys Chatham & Charlemagne Palestine, Glenn Branca, Earth 2 and La Monte Young.
It annoyed Cage that the general public and popular press continued to identify him as the inventor of the prepared piano. In an interview in 1961 he said: “It was what I was doing 10 years ago. The public is always 10 years behind.” The music featured in this episode has been actually rediscovered recently — in some cases more than 10 years later — thanks to the passionate work of labels such us Superior Viaduct and États-Unis that repressed these avant-garde gems. The episode features: B.C.Gilbert & G.Lewis, Jon Gibson, Anna Lockwood, Edward Artemiev, Warner Jepson, Glenn Branca, Sensations Fix, Milk from Cheltenham and Inflatable Boy Clams

Nú eru tuttugu ár frá því sjónvarpsþættirnir, og menningarfyrirbærið, Sex and the City, eða Beðmál í borginni, hófu göngu sína. Þórður Ingi Jónsson fer síðan yfir ævi og feril bandaríska tónskáldsins Glenn Branca en hann lést úr krabbameini í hálsi í maímánuði, 69 ára að aldri. Branca spilaði lykilrullu í hinni svokölluðu no wave listasenu sem spratt upp í New York seint á áttunda áratugnum og var þekktur fyrir drunandi gítarorkestrur þar sem hann ýtti hljóðfærinu að ystu mörkum.

Mister, Height Keech and ialive talk First Degree The DE, Morgan Delt and Glenn Branca.
The dough starts rough, and after a few rolls, falls over itself, as it slowly starts to congeal. This piece is a flakey pie crust, in the school of Rhys Chatham or Glenn Branca. Set in 3 time, its 14 tracks were blind-recorded with the through-line of “record the same thing each time”. Obviously some variations emerged from the performances, and some from improvisation, and willful neglect. The crust gains its life from imperfections.
Sup Doc kicks off the jams w ROCKTOBER a month long line-up of music docs and great guests. We hit the stage with The Devil and Daniel Johnston with our guest, musician Kip Uhlhorn! The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a 2005 documentary film about the noted American musician Daniel Johnston. It chronicles Johnston's life from childhood up to the present, with an emphasis on his experiences with bipolar disorder, and how it manifested itself in demonic self-obsession. The film was directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, edited by Tyler Hubby, and produced by Henry S. Rosenthal.Kip Uhlhorn formed Cloudland Canyon in 2002. The first Cloudland Canyon release, Requiems Der Natur, 2002-2004 was released by Tee Pee in 2006. Cloudland Canyon quickly set about releasing a number of other releases and touring that same year, most notably a single track collaboration 12”/LP entitled Exterminating Angel with Chicago musician Lichens in 2007 on Holy Mountain. In 2007, the band was signed to Kranky and released their first proper album Silver Tongued Sisyphus. In 2008, the band released another collaborative 12” with Mythical Beast on Not Not Fun, as well as their second full length, Lie in Light on Kranky. The latter was chosen as one of top 25 albums of the year 2008 by the Magnet magazine. Cloudland Canyon subsequently moved to Holy Mountain, where the band began their own imprint of Holy Mountain (Intercoastal Artists) for 2010’s album Fin Eaves, which has become their best-received work to date, landing on numerous year-end lists. They went on tour with the Flaming Lips (whom Uhlhorn has collaborated extensively with) as well as with Interpol and Bear in Heaven. Members of the Arcade Fire even name checked the band.Uhlhorn has also played in several other successful groups and bands during this time, including King Khan & the Shrines, Panthers (Dim Mak, Vice), Pharaohs (100% Silk, Stone's Throw, Intercoastal Artists), Eden Express (Holy Mountain), and Tav Falco's Panther Burns He has also played guitar live and on albums by Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, including Chatham's Crimson Grail, which was staged at Lincoln Center. On today's show, I talk to musician Weasel Walter. Weasel is a take-charge kind of guy, and an iconoclastic personality, and was a major contributor to the Chicago no-wave/noise/improvised music underground during the '90s and early 2000s, most notably with his band The Flying Luttenbachers, which he formed with jazz cult figure Hal Russell. Since then, Weasel has collaborated with people like Jim O'Rourke, Lydia Lunch and Glenn Branca - as well as many, many others - and currently (though not for long) resides in New York where he plays with Cellular Chaos and Behold...The Arctopus. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter, and check out my gameshow podcast Snap Impression!
