Shabaka Hutchings grew up between the UK and Barbados. He started playing clarinet as a young boy in Barbados and eventually moved back to England to go to music school in the early 2000s. After college he began a period of working furiously on a kaleidoscopic range of projects and became an icon of the new sound of London jazz, which integrated African rhythms and modes, Caribbean and Middle eastern sounds and was largely danceable. Shabaka himself has never fully embraced the jazz label. While the music is highly improvised, and it owes much to the American jazz tradition, his influences are very broad. Over the course of the past decade, the majority of his touring and recorded work has been with three bands: Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors. In these formations he displayed a fundamental approach to creative practice in different contexts spanning Afro-Caribbean fusion, London dance music club culture and the South African jazz tradition. Part of his signature on the saxophone has been inspired by rappers, and his sound is often evocative of the human voice, conversational, expressive, and rhythmic. A somewhat chance encounter with a flute maker in Japan several years ago led him to develop an interest in the Shakuhachi flute tradition, and during covid he committed himself to the flute. Last year he announced that he would be putting away his saxophone and ending all of his bands to dedicate himself almost exclusively to playing wooden flutes. His latest release Perceive its beauty, Acknowledge its Grace (Impulse!) is his first full length album since making that transition. It's more meditative, contemplative and introspective than his earlier work. But it's still clearly Shabaka. The album features appearances by pianist Jason Moran, drummer Nasheet Waits, harpists Brandee Younger and Charles Overton, vocalists Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney and Saul Williams, string wizard Miguel Atwood Ferguson and percussionist Carlos Niño. I talked to Shabaka earlier this year at Winter Jazzfest as he was embarking on a new adventure, both personally and musically. It was an absolutely fascinating conversation about his own creative development and philosophy, his new record, and why this historical moment is “showing the importance of slowing down, of patience, of contemplation.” www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com/ www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Carlos Niño, Liv.e, Andre 3000 and Luis Pérez Ixoneztli discuss how their music is inspired by spirit, the feeling of creating sounds that are meaningful to them, and how they stay open to learning during their lives in music.Producer, percussionist and composer Carlos Niño started making beats aged 17 with Fabian Alston, before becoming a radio DJ in California. In 2008, he started Carlos Niño & Friends, and has worked with the likes of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Photay and Kamasi Washington. His music blends orchestral arrangements and acoustic instruments with cutting-edge production techniques; in September of this year he released his new album, (I'm just) Chillin', on Fire. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, experimental R&B artist Liv.e is known for her hypnotic voice and eclectic musical influences. She was first introduced to music through the church ,but now draws inspiration from the likes of Lalah Hathaway and Wayne Shorter, as well as Dallas-based label Dolfin Records. In February of this year she released her critically acclaimed second album, Girl in the Half Pearl. Composer, ethnomusicologist and multi-instrumentalist Luis Pérez Ixoneztli is a hugely influential figure in Mexican music, who's dedicated years of research to the pre-Columbian instrumentation of Mesoamerica, travelling around the country to study the musical traditions of Mexico's native peoples. His music has been described as “perhaps the ultimate fusion of ethnic and modern music”; in 2013, his work was inducted into the Archive of Mexican Music, 32 years after it was first published. Andre 3000 is an American rapper, singer, record producer and actor who is best known for being one-half of hip-hop duo Outkast. He's sold millions of records around the world, with hit singles such as Hey Ya! and Ms. Jackson, as well as acting in series such as The Shield and films including All Is by My Side, a 2013 biopic about Jimi Hendrix.

Composer and jazz musician Miguel Atwood-Ferguson embodies a global influence in his debut album, Les Jardins Mystiques Vol. 1. As the death toll rises, Israel lacks clear plans for Gaza beyond crushing Hamas. What will become of the embattled territory and the occupied West Bank? Joe Biden is trailing Donald Trump in five of six key swing states that are likely to determine the 2024 presidential election, a recent New York Times poll shows. A federal law bars people subject to domestic violence restraining orders from possessing guns. Does it violate the Second Amendment? The Supreme Court will consider this question on Tuesday. The justices also recently agreed to hear a challenge to a Trump-era ban on bump stocks.
KCRW DJ LeRoy Downs recommends new jazz tracks by A.K. Toney, Steve Lehman, Linda May Han Oh, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Samora Pinderhughes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised the total destruction of Hamas. Even with a bloody ground war, some experts say that may not be possible. The 14th Amendment bans insurrectionists from holding political office. A Colorado trial will determine if that applies to former President Donald Trump. Journalist and author Nat Segaloff's new book, “The Exorcist Legacy: 50 Years of Fear,” is a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic horror film and its standing power.
New music from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on Brainfeeder. Gospel from Parchman Prison Prayer & The Meditation Singers. Soul from Steven Bamidele. Deep dancefloor beats from Laroye, Njelic & Thabza Tee. Jasik - "Black Sands" from the 2021 album Forest of Spirit on Preference Records. Pianist/producer Jamael Dean is only in his early 20s, but he already boasts a lengthy discography, both as Jira >< and, for his rap/spoken word material, as Jasik, a combination of "jah", the creator, and "seek," as in, a disciple or student. He uses this alias "for writing," he explains, "to pay homage to the students of creation seeking to leave something of service in their wake." The grandson of legendary jazz drummer Donald Dean, Jasik grew up in an environment where music was encouraged, and his parents bought him a keyboard for Christmas when he was just eight-years-old. Since then, he's gone on to collaborate with musicians like Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Carlos Niño. (He was also part of Thundercat's touring band for a while.) On his latest album Forest of Spirit, Jasik displays his introspective side, demonstrating a mastery of wordplay against a soothing, jazzy soundtrack. On today's Song of the Day, he seemingly meditates on the preservation of culture. We are all magic and everything we do is a spell. Each thought, word and action is a spell we cast. Consider that as often as you can, and be aware of what magic you are creating. What signals are you sending out into the ether? This will be received, picked up, and acted upon by the universal forces. This Winter Solstice 2020, I am releasing this magical affirmation out into the world. I recommend downloading this, and storing it in iTunes, or somewhere where you can play it on loop without WiFi. Have the computer in the next room while you sleep, you don't even need it in the same room for it to work. Or have it playing on loop at very low volume so you can barely hear it, while you are working or making food. Affirmations work on the subconscious mind, so it seems to almost work better if you can't hear it.This is my gift to you this Winter Solstice. It's very powerful! It shifted a lot for me. Let me know what happens to you when you start using it.The music is an excerpt from Chicago Waves, by Carlos Niño and Miguel Atwood Ferguson, released by International Anthem in June 2020, used with kind permission.

“Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.”― Kahlil Gibran In this episode Anais chats with newly transplanted roots singer Mara Kaye. She and her partner, guitarist, Tim McNalley share musical memories and tunes from the soul. "MARA KAYE IS THAT RARE CROSS-SPECIES PHENOMENON, A BLUES AMPHIBIAN. WHEN OTHERS ‘SING THE BLUES’ AS IF OFFERING AN UNUSUAL SMALL PLATE AT THE TAPAS BAR, MARA HAS SO IMMERSED HERSELF IN THE IDIOM THAT SHE GOES DOWN TO THE BOTTOM AND DOESN’T NEED AIR UNTIL THE SHOW IS OVER. SHE’S A MODERNIST RATHER THAN A MUSEUM PIECE: HER CREATIONS CAN BE DARKLY MOURNFUL, SAVAGELY VENGEFUL, OR GLEEFULLY EROTIC, BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS LEAVENED WITH BROOKLYN SPICE" https://www.marakaye.com/ Tim McNalley is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and songwriter from Southern California. While most commonly seen on the upright and electric bass, he also performs, records and tours on guitar, cello, mandolin and sitar- a breadth that has allowed him the opportunity to collaborate with artists such as Ariana Grande, Lianne La Havas, Changuito, Steve Grand, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Lianne La Havas, lostboycrow, Juanita Stein, Aashish Khan, Earl Thomas, Jim Kweskin, Burt Turetzky, and more. In film, McNalley co-wrote, produced, and performed on soundtracks for Sex, Drugs, and Bicycles (2019), Influent (2017) and Zula the Infinite (2016) McNalley graduated Summa Cum Laude from UC San Diego with a BA in Music and an emphasis in Jazz and the African Diaspora. McNalley has also had the blessing of studying with several notable musicians, including Hindustani music with virtuoso Kartik Seshadri, upright bass with Mark Dresser, as well as composition with Anthony Davis and Grammy winning producer Kamau Kenyatta FOLLOW Mara & Tim Facebook https://www.facebook.com/mara.kaye.9 ttps://www.facebook.com/tim.mcnalley.5 Instagram @marakaye @timmcnalley JOIN Mara & Tim for their weekly livestream concert, “Sauce & Snack Saturday Special” Every Saturday @ 6pm THANK YOU to our Sponsor Lehmans Live simply with the Lehman's hardware online store stock up on non-electric tools & homesteading supplies since 1955. 028: Artyom ManukyanPowerhouse on the cello. Composer, improvisor, bandleader. Let’s spend some time with one of today’s most exciting string players. This is Play It Like It’s Music, I’m Trevor Exter. Thanks for listening.Welcome back! On Wednesday, February 26th of 2020 music is not content, it’s connection.I’m so glad I got a good one in today with one of my favorite cello players, and I’m biased. The guy is a rule breaker and a free spirit on the instrument, as well as a consummate musician who always plays from the heart. Artyom Manukyan is a real hero to cello players everywhere and that’s who we’re talking to today. He’s got two great albums out, the newest one is called Alone and you can hear it in all the places. A quick check-in, I am enjoying the weather here. It’s my first winter in LA and I gotta say, I’ll take it. Thanks. Also finishing up a couple of songs that I will be releasing to you soon. Things are sounding good here in the studio and I’m excited to get some music back out into the world. It’s been six years since I released any proper records and they were both EP’s. But lemme tell you, it’s been a journey. I won’t talk too much about it now because I’m still finishing up the tracks and have to stay focused, but it feels like the right time. But you know, trying to go out as a so-called “artist” can be quite daunting even after you’ve given yourself permission to do it. Some might say that’s where our troubles begin: in identifying ourselves as “artists” with all the baggage that term implies in our creative landscape. But the workaround is to let yourself define what the word means to you. For example, in the music business, “Artist”, “Composer” and “Musician” are three distinct roles. Separate jobs. But you can be all three. I hate it though, when people dodge the distinctions and start to call us “creatives”. That’s a lazy poaching of an Ad industry term. The reality for most of us is that we have a demon inside of us that won’t let us rest until we find expression for something new, original and of our own making.Call yourself what you want, but don’t let that part of you fall asleep for too long.Which brings me to our guest of the hour. I’m a cello guy, and I’d like to reassure you non-cello people that we don’t get too deep into the weeds here. Fear not!One thing that happens though - if you really grab the cello and commit to it - is that you realize it’s just a giant doorway into music. There are so many possibilities that the instrument will offer an imaginative player and it really demands a lot of discipline from us. It definitely does not play itself, though you can get that impression when watching a truly great player. The thing about Artyom, though - and this is why I wanted to talk to him on the show - is that he incorporates a deep knowledge of music with a capital M. He is definitely not confined to the standard view of what the cello can or should do. He’s blazing a trail through the modern instrumental landscape and all kinds of important players are taking note. He tours with Melody Gardot as an integral band member. He gigs around LA with the coolest and most forward-thinking players on the scene, folks like Mark De Clive-Lowe, Kamasi Washington, Flying Lotus, Tim Lefebvre and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. He just went to play on the Blue Note cruise, man!So he’s totally made it out of the cello crab-bucket, and that’s a thing we all can get behind. I’m super privileged to present my interview with the fantastic and fascinating Artyom Manukyan. As always, if you like the show, please tell a friend and help us spread the word. Otherwise it’s just us.OK, let’s go. Press PLAY above to hear my interview with Artyom ManukyanThanks for sticking around. Thanks to Artyom for spending some time with us.GO LISTEN TO HIS RECORDS. DJ Riz delivers a smooth late-night mix featuring Four Tet, Blood Orange, Quelle Chris, JusMoni and Makaya McCraven. In his words, “In honor of KEXP’s mixtape week, here’s a little contemporary something I put together in my head then on ‘tape. I don’t think there’s an on air ‘selector’ here that hasn’t done dozens of these, made personally for someone they love, cherish, or even hate. This one’s a nocturnal mix.. ‘nocturne’ from wikipedia: “The name nocturne was first applied to pieces in the 18th century, when it indicated an ensemble piece in several movements, normally played for an evening party and then laid aside.” Like Ray Charles sang, “night time is the right time.” I dedicate this to ‘Bill‘ and everyone I’ve had the pleasure of exchanging a mixtape with throughout the years. Keep making em. Keep trading em. Enjoy.” -Riz 1. Kishi Bashi - Violin Tsunami 2. Four Tet - Dreamer 3. Makaya McCraven - The Fifth Monk (feat. [INTRO: 8:30] In this episode I speak with lawyer and radical environmental activist Will Falk. In this discussion, Will examines the United States legal system, in particular environmental law, and the difficult realities communities around the US continuously face when it comes to protecting natural entities (lakes, rivers, forests, etc.) from ecologically destructive government and corporate projects. As Will elaborates in this interview, the United States legal system is not designed to effectively protect human and non-human communities from ecologically destructive projects. Instead, as Will explains, it exists primarily “to make it near impossible for the citizenry to oppose those projects” through legal means.* This assertion can be demonstrated to be true by examining numerous legal cases that have come up in the last several decades in communities around US -- perhaps most dramatically by the community of Toledo, Ohio in their efforts to end the proliferation of toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie — the region’s main source of potable water. In response to this environmental crisis, the community organized to have a “Lake Erie Bill of Rights” on the ballot in their local elections. If enacted, the legislation would effectively grant legal rights to a natural entity (Lake Erie), and would work to protect the lake and the residents of Toledo from the destructive impacts of industrial agricultural runoff (which produces toxic algae blooms as a byproduct). As Will explains in detail, this campaign, in spite of being extremely well organized, well funded, legally and ethically sound, and having gained enough votes in the election, was shut down by the very legal processes that the community of Toledo relied upon for the success their campaign. This case, unfortunately, is not unique. After expounding on the details of this case, Will explains what must actually be done to halt the pervasive and ongoing destruction of the living systems of the planet. Our government and legal system as a whole will not, and cannot, do it for us. As the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund has stated: “Each municipality is a match, and each instance of a law being overturned as violative of these legal doctrines is an opportunity for people to see how the structure actually functions. This does the necessary work of penetrating the denial, piercing the illusion of democracy, and removing the blinders that prevent a large majority of people from seeing the reality on the ground.”* Will Falk is a writer, lawyer, and environmental activist. Will graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School and practiced as a public defender in Kenosha, WI. He left the public defender office to pursue frontline environmental activism. Will is the author of the upcoming book ‘How Dams Fall: On Representing the Colorado River in the First-ever American Lawsuit Seeking Rights for a Major Ecosystem.' *http://bit.ly/2JViXAL Episode Notes: - Learn more about Will and his work: http://willfalk.org - Purchase Will’s upcoming book ‘How Dams Fall: On Representing the Colorado River in the First-ever American Lawsuit Seeking Rights for a Major Ecosystem’: http://bit.ly/2xYJ2cG - Support the Toledoans for Safe Water: https://lakeerieaction.wixsite.com/safewatertoledo - Support the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund: https://celdf.org - Read more about the "Lake Erie Bill of Rights" case: http://bit.ly/2JViXAL - The song featured is “Computer Face (String Arrangement by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson)” by Flying Lotus from the album Cosmogramma Alt Takes.
