In the Hillsboro School District, we are committed to all students graduating career and college ready. Not only is it the district's mission, it's our passion and commitment to students and the broader community. Our school counselors and career and technical education teachers play an integral role in the achievement of this mission each and every day. National School Counseling Week will be celebrated from February 5th through 9th, 2024 to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems, as well as how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. This year's theme is "School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused." National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Please celebrate the imperative work of the 64 school counselors, 10 Student Support & Wellness Counselors and 4 Mental Health Care Coordinators in HSD! February is also National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education. Specifically, this month, we recognize the contributions of our CTE teachers and their pivotal role in the development of CTE programming in HSD. These dedicated educators are instrumental in shaping the future of our students. They provide hands-on training, real-world skills, and valuable insights into a variety of career paths, ensuring our students are well-prepared for success in today's job market. CTE teachers not only bridge the skills gap but also inspire innovation and creativity in our classrooms. Their commitment to excellence empowers students to discover their passions and chart a course toward a prosperous future. Please celebrate the career-connected work of the 45 CTE educators in our 35 Career and Technical Education programs in HSD! Our Featured Event was a visit to Liberty High School's Sustainable Agriculture and Sustainable Design programs on Thursday, January 25th by Oregon's U.S. Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. Students and staff talked to the Congresswoman about their unique classroom spaces and Falcon Farm, and the opportunities they have to grow and sell produce and related products, as well as design and construct items with the environment in mind. A very cool thing they did with her was show her how they turn some of the corn they grow into yummy tortillas! As one student worked on hand-grinding the kernels that had been treated with calcium hydroxide, two others were mixing that fresh masa with a bit of store-bought masa flour, water, and salt to make tortillas. Still other students cooked the tortillas and added some cheese on top then set them out for fellow students and the guests to top with a variety of salsas that students had previously made! See pictures on our website. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. Please also bookmark our district website: hsd.k12.or.us to stay informed about what's happening in our district and schools.

National School Counseling Week is such an important week for school counselors. We're sharing five (or more) ideas on ways you can spread the word and "humble brag" about your school counseling program during National School Counseling Week 2024. Just a word of caution: it's not about receiving gifts during National School Counseling Week. It's about advocating for your program.
The news about the deaths of two Meadowcreek High School students this week has left the school's community reeling as it mourns the teens. First came the news that the remains found off State Route 316 this week belonged to Susana Morales, 16, who had been missing since last summer. Then came the news that another student who had recently gone missing, Rodrigo Floriano Mayen, 17, was recently found dead from an overdose. Police said on Friday that the deaths are not related to one another. The deaths prompted Meadowcreek Principal Kevin Wood to send a letter to parents on Thursday. According to Gwinnett's local health department, GNR Public Health, the Georgia 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Act is designed to encourage people to seek help in the event of an overdose by providing “limited immunity from arrest, charge and prosecution for possession of certain drugs and drug paraphernalia for individuals who experience a drug overdose and are in need of medical care and for those who seek medical care in good faith for a person experiencing an overdose.” Wood told Meadowcreek parents that counselors and social workers are being made available to students and staff members who need to talk to someone as they grieve the deaths of Morales and Mayen. Duluth police have arrested a man, who has been described as a “witch doctor,” on charges that he allegedly raped a woman who went to him for a cleansing ritual last weekend. Hassan Shalgheen, 44, met the victim through social media and set up a meeting for a cleansing at his apartment. On February 5, the victim contacted police, however, and told them that, rather than receiving a cleansing, she had been assaulted instead. Shalgheen was arrested on February 6 and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. He has been charged with rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment and theft by deception. Police are now looking to see if there are other women who have also been victims. Anyone who has been a victim, or has additional information about the case, is asked to call the detective handling the case. In commemorating National School Counseling Week, Gwinnett County Public Schools held an awards program on Feb. 7 to recognize its top counseling award winners for 2023. Those honored included Dr. Natalie Pugh of Gwin Oaks Elementary School, Jameela Hall of Lilburn Middle School and Dr. Cedric Cooks of Norcross High School. In addition, Dr. Eric Davidson, principal at Duluth High School was recognized as the Mary Joe Hannaford Counselor Administrator of the Year Award. At the awards program, the school district also honored Duluth High School as a 2022 Recognized ASCA Model Program recipient. There are 34 counseling departments in the school system that are recipients of the RAMP National Award, which is awarded by the American School Counselor Association and recognizes schools that have established comprehensive data-driven counseling programs. This marks the second time Duluth High School has received RAMP recognition. A list of those honored can be found at Gwinnett Daily Post dot com. Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Wednesday that he has picked two members of Gwinnett County's legislative delegation to serve on a joint committee that provides legislative oversight for MARTA. State Senator Gloria Butler of Stone Mountain, and Representative Scott Hilton of Peachtree Corners, were among six legislators that Kemp appointed to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Overview Committee, also known as MARTOC. While MARTA has its own board of directors, made up of members from counties that participate in the transit system, MARTOC is a joint House and Senate committee that serves a statutory role to provide oversight for MARTA, particularly in budgetary matters. Although Hilton and Butler do represent districts that include parts of Gwinnett, their districts also include portions of counties which participate in MARTA. In Hilton's case, that is a portion of Fulton County. In Butler's case, it is a part of DeKalb County. Duluth recently announced its 2023 event schedule which features many favorites the city is known for in addition to a concert by A1A: The Original Jimmy Buffett tribute band and the return of Viva Las Duluth. The city's event season kicks off in March with the Duluth Farmers & Artisan Market. In addition to shopping with local vendors on the second and fourth Sunday of every month through November, each market features live music. Among the highlights: Flicks on the Bricks returns with a free movie under the stars on August 4 and 18. Fridays-N-Duluth (FND) kicks off May 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Downtown Duluth and runs through the end of July. FND will feature live music, food trucks and vendors. Themed nights will return on Fridays that fall on an even date. Themes will include Dog Days of Summer, Pride, Kick-Off to the Fourth, Whimsical Wonderland and International Night. The Lantern Parade will be included in International Night on July 28. City officials said signature events such as Back-to-School Bubblepalooza, Howl on the Green, Deck the Hall and Cookies & Cocoa with Santa will all be back for 2023. A1A will headline the Summer Stage Concert on August 12. Night at the Red Clay (formerly Cinema at the Red Clay) will continue in 2023 with an added twist — in addition to movie nights, there will be free concerts and comedy shows at the Red Clay Music Foundry. For more information please visit Duluth GA dot net. A plane that was damaged as it was forced to make an emergency landing on Interstate 985 last month did so because it had lost all power on its way back to Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville, according to report from federal investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report into the Jan. 24 incident near Buford and Sugar Hill shows the Piper PA-28-140 airplane had been on a instructional flight when it experienced trouble. It's landing on the interstate shut down I-985 for hours during rush hour traffic. The instructor was able to confirm that the plane's throttle was full forward and that its fuel air mixture was full rich after the plane lost power, but they were too far out from Briscoe Field, where they had taken off from, to make it back safely. February brings so many fun things for school counselors including National School Counseling Week and Valentine's Day! One thing I love to cover in the month of February is healthy relationships and friendships and this ties in great with Valentine's Day. If you are looking for some fun ways to combine the Valentine's theme with healthy relationships, you're in luck! I have so many fun ideas for you today! We may think that teaching healthy friendships and relationships isn't necessary. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. Many of our students may be more familiar with UNhealthy relationships than with healthy ones. We want to make sure that students know what healthy friendships and relationships look like and that they themselves are acting in a healthy manner. In this episode, I am sharing some of my favorite Valentine's themed activities that you can use with your students. I am sharing why you should be teaching students about healthy relationships and friendships, examples of activities to do with your students to teach about healthy relationships, and ideas for how to easily implement these activities without added stress. * Show Notes: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/podcast-episodes/healthy-vs-unhealthy-relationships * Resources Mentioned: Healthy vs Unhealthy Friendships Discussion Cards - Valentine's Day Themed: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Healthy-vs-Unhealthy-Friendships-Discussion-Cards-Valentines-Day-Themed-5224748 Healthy vs Unhealthy Relationships Discussion Cards - Valentine's Day Themed: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Healthy-Vs-Unhealthy-Relationships-Discussion-Cards-Valentines-Day-Themed-5224755 Episode 77: How to Celebrate National School Counseling Week (even if you're a solo counselor!): https://brightfutures-counseling.com/podcast-episodes/national-school-counseling-week Join the IMPACT 2.0 membership for ongoing support and access to 300+ resources: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/impact Enroll in the Stress Free School Counseling Course: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/enroll * Connect with Rachel: Shop: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Bright-Futures-Counseling Blog: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightfuturescounseling/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2473191466030095 If you are enjoying School Counseling Simplified please follow and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/school-counseling-simplified-podcast/id1534494971

February 6 through 10 is National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association. The theme this year is “School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big.” The purpose is to highlight the unique contribution of school counselors within our school buildings, and the tremendous impact counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Please join us in celebrating the nearly 90 HSD school counselors, school-to-career specialists, support and wellness counselors, care coordinators, Youth Contact counselors, and their district supporters during National School Counseling Week! February is also National Career and Technical Education or CTE Month, sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education. It is a public awareness campaign that takes place each February to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs and educators across the country. We have much to celebrate in our Hillsboro community, as we continue to expand and grow our CTE opportunities for our students. The vision and passion of our CTE staff is the reason why the Hillsboro School District is recognized across our state for excellence in the area of Career and College Pathways! Our featured event is Family Library Night at Rosedale Elementary School. Thanks to a generous grant from the Hillsboro Schools Foundation and Richard B. Siegel Foundation, Rosedale Elementary School's library has been offering monthly “Your Story Matters” events for each grade level. Families are invited to attend with their child, browse the school's collection of books, and enjoy the space together. Snacks, gifts, prizes, and the book that is read aloud are given away to participating families. Fifty-one families attended the 2nd grade event in January, and they're hoping for an equally great turnout for the 3rd grade event on Wednesday, February 15th. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. Please also bookmark our district website: hsd.k12.or.us and the 2022-23 School Year page: hsd.k12.or.us/202223schoolyear to stay informed about what's happening in our district and schools.

This week is National School Counseling Week. The theme is All in for All Students. Right now, I want to share a powerful story with you. As a high school counselor, I am humbled and grateful when a young man can share with me. A few days before graduation, a young man sat in my office, head hung low. Enormous tears slid down his face and plopped on the carpet, wet spots as big as dimes. He was heartbroken when a romantic relationship ended. His former girlfriend and he conceived a child together. He was thrilled to become a dad. This young man, handsome, always dressed in the sharpest streetwear, a true extrovert, had a different side to share. And he allowed me to be witness to his heartbreak. Young man, if somehow you happen to be listening, I remember that day as a singular highlight of my counseling career. As a counselor at Rockford Jefferson, where we are bursting with nearly two thousand kids, I work with all kinds of kids, such as teen parents, some as competent as my peers. I
