When the Entrepreneur stops by a hypergiant star, they get to know a gregarious alien species that's very generous with their tech. But when the two captains take a field trip and Tucker goes rouge with a Vissian, the implications for First Contact put everyone on the edge. How high can the writers' room count? Where do cogenitors poop at the airport? What should be chiseled into Archer's tombstone? It's the episode that never fails to check for TNG semiotics.Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Riker - Quantum LeapThe Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social
Listen, this episode is a bit of a rant, so get ready for Enterprise's Cogenitor. We've got: gender opinions, tv writing opinions, Reed opinions, and I, at least, Get Mad. Oh well! Enjoy!
Episode 8: Prime Directive What sets Phlox apart as a non-human on the Enterprise? What happens when you insert human ethics onto a non-human problem? What does Archer learn about the Prime Directive? Should Archer have demoted Trip for his actions in “Cogenitor”? What if Archer had granted the Cogenitor asylum? Join Ashlyn, Rhianna, and Todd as they discuss “Dear Doctor” and “Cogenitor” in Enterprise. This is the eighth episode of the Prime Directive series, where Ashlyn and Rhianna talk about the good and bad examples in every Star Trek show, starting with the Original Series and ending with Strange New Worlds. SPOILER WARNING: “Dear Doctor” and “Cogenitor” TRIGGER WARNINGS: Suicide Next time, we'll be finishing up the remaining Prime Directive episodes of Enterprise! Content warning: discussion of suicide. Archer just keeps biffing it this week. First up: he's too blinded by his new friends' toys to realize their society is absolute garbage in "Cogenitor". After that, "Enterprise" betrays the prequel format yet again by having Borg show up in "Regeneration". Also this week: confused messaging, timeline theories, and Dax (Daxes? Daxae? What in the world is the plural of Dax?)! “Cogenitor” 20th-anniversary reflections The Enterprise makes first contact with the Vissians, a species that has a lot in common in with humans, such as a love of exploration, a fascination with ice cream, and an interest in large tactical arrays. But they also have key differences, like a third gender that enables reproduction. Given the specialized role these cogenitors, as they are called, play in Vissian society, they have little need for niceties such as literacy. That doesn't sit well with Trip, who befriends the cogenitor of the Vissian chief engineer and his wife, Calla. When Trip teaches the cogenitor to read, it leads to them questioning—and taking—their own life. While Trip's intentions may have been good, the outcome was not. Star Trek ENT S2E22 Cogenitor
Star Trek: Enterprise, Series 2, Episode 22. First broadcast on Wednesday, 30 April 2003. The crew of Enterprise encounter the Vissians, a genial and technologically advanced species who enslave three percent of their population and force them to have sex with married couples who wish to conceive their horrible latex-faced children. Surprisingly, we're generally fine with this. Apart from Trip, who is a good person.
This week we're joined by Madeline (@WildishMazz) to talk about Enterprise's Cogenitor, in which Trip tucker befriends a person who is enslaved for the purposes of procreation and gets in trouble for teaching someone to read and write. Remind me why we're meant to like Archer again?
In this episode, Luke Annand discusses the second season episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, "Cogenitor".

Enterprise encounters the Vissians, a race that includes a third gender of "cogenitors" who are treated as second-class citizens. Lisa Schmeiser, writer, editor, and Incomparable panelist, joins Scott to discuss ENT’s “Cogenitor” (S2E22). Topics include scouting, westerns, space grandpas, and how good this episode almost ends up being. Host Scott McNulty with Lisa Schmeiser.
"Cogenitor". Gender: a word that seems simple at first, and in days past had a limited definition. But as with all language, the meanings of words change with use and context. Dictionary.com defines gender (in relation to life forms, and not grammar) as: 1. either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated by social and cultural roles and behavior:the feminine gender. 2. a similar category of human beings that is outside the male/female binary classification and is based on the individual's personal awareness or identity. Enterprise's twenty-second episode of season two dives into this construct called gender, and could arguably be the most important episode of the series. At the time of airing, it was considered very forward-thinking; today, it could be considered eerily prescient. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala and Brandi Jackola are joined by special guests Dan Deevy of Gaaays in Spaaace and Barry DeFord of Politreks to tackle the episode "Cogenitor". They discuss friendly encounters, the difference between gender and sex, Andorians mating in fours, imposing human cultural values on another civilizations, necessity bringing about change, and whether they think Archer was right to deny asylum to the cogenitor. The Enterprise crew comes into contact with the Vissians, a race with three genders. One of these genders, dubbed Cogenitors, lead a life unbefitting a sentient being by most human standards, so of course Trip is gonna get mixed up in there. Enterprise Season 2 - Essential Trek Philosophy. Season 2 of Enterprise contained numerous fun and interesting and science-fiction concepts and ideas, as the crew of the NX-01 encountered novelty and adventure going where no humans had ever gone before. But this season also explored a number of important philosophical and ethical issues, from the Kantian principle of not using other sentient beings as a means to your own ends in "Dead Stop" to the politics of gender and sexual identity in "Stigma." In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling recount their choices for Essential Trek Philosophy from season 2 of Enterprise, along with proverbial life lessons learned from this season, such as the importance of getting down in the trenches with people who are struggling, standing up to bullies, and going the extra mile (or the extra light year) to rebuild damaged relationships. Enterprise Season Two, Part Three. Was Trip right to try to help the Cogenitor? Why didn't Picard know about the Borg if Archer had already ran into them? Is it strange to see Tellarites with fingers, or is it strange that a couple of them had hooves around one hundred years later? In this episode of Warp Five, host Floyd Dorsey is joined by Melodic Treks host Brandon-Shea Mutala and Meta Treks co-host Mike Morrison to answer these questions, and more, as they analyze the topics and situations that stand out in the last half of season two. Hey, sometimes an episode suggests two titles. Whatcha gonna do? Anyway, this week, we're recording a day early and talking about Elementary, which provides a pretty decent mystery, even if it's not what J. ordered. Then, Enterprise just...man, it's Enterprise, I'm running out of adjectives for "mediocre." We talk about "Cogenitor," "Regeneration," and "First Flight." They're bad. We also talk about our favorite lines from The Simpsons in here apropos of nothing, so there's that!

Cogenitor. When we see injustices, it's natural for us to want to change them. But when those injustices involve an alien culture, is it really fair for us to impose our human views on others? This was one of the biggest challenges for early explorers and comes into play when Trip encounters a situation that seems very wrong to him, but is perfectly normal, accepted, and in fact critical to the Vissians. Despite good intentions, his actions to right a perceived wrong have devastating consequences. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Daniel Proulx and Matthew Rushing to discuss “Cogenitor,” the idea of a species that requires three genders to reproduce, the reasons why the Vissians may oppress the cogenitors, the repercussions of Trip's actions, and, of course, the sensual cheese eating habits of Malcolm Reed.
