In this episode, I share a childhood story that shaped how I understand race, identity, and the language we use to describe ourselves. What started as an innocent moment between two little girls turned into years of confusion — not because I didn't know who I was, but because I didn't yet have the words.I talk about the difference between race, ethnicity, and culture, why those distinctions matter, and how misunderstandings around them still shape our conversations today. This isn't about blame — it's about clarity, compassion, and learning to see the systems we're all moving through. If you've ever struggled to explain your identity, or wondered why these conversations feel so charged, this one might give you a new way to think about it.Thank you for stopping by. On this episode of Sustainability Matters, we examine how indigeneity is defined and contested in conversations around identity, science, and sovereignty. Is it something we inherit, or a political construct? How can scientific and Indigenous knowledge systems collaborate without losing their distinct integrity? And what happens when genetic research defines belonging in ways that conflict with cultural and political self-understandings? All this and more with Dr. Benjamin Gregg, author of “Scientific Integrity and Indigenous Justice in Genetic Research,” which is Chapter 5 in the book Indigeneity as Social Construct and Political Tool: Critique and Reconstruction of a Contested Identity, published by De Gruyter Brill. Christians shouldn't be caught up in the confusion of our day. Scripture is clear—God created male and female. There are only two genders in humans.
Send us a textEvolutionary anthropologist Dr. Anna Machin delivers groundbreaking research revealing monogamy as a social construct rather than our biological destiny, with satisfaction levels being equal between monogamous and polyamorous relationships.• Monogamy developed as a social control mechanism when civilization became more complex• Approximately 50% of supposedly monogamous households experience infidelity• Very few species in nature are truly sexually monogamous, including humans• Research shows no significant difference in relationship satisfaction between monogamous and consensually non-monogamous partnerships• Social stigma remains the biggest challenge for polyamorous individuals despite their emphasis on honesty and communication• Individual factors like attachment style and personality play a bigger role in relationship preference than gender• Polyamorous people don't "split" their love but expand their capacity for it, similar to loving multiple friends or childrenIf you want to explore different relationship structures, consider researching relationship anarchy and non-monogamy, and remember that honest communication with partners is essential regardless of your chosen relationship style.Original video - https://youtu.be/hxsnk90VwCo?si=oS9cSO_ycjPB8bjR Got a burning question about kink, BDSM, relationships, and/or navigating the wild world of alternative lifestyles? Welcome back to Queer Wrath Month, Neurodivergent Creative! In this episode, Caitlin dives deep into nonbinary gender identity—what it is, what it isn't, and why it's time we unlearn the binaries we've been spoon-fed... because apparently, it's 2025 and some of y'all still think gender has only two options like it's a sad vending machine. (ugh!)If you're nonbinary, this episode is for you.If you're confused about what it means, this episode is for you.If you're mad about it... you might need to hear it even more. The truth is gender diversity has alwaaaays existed. If you can believe in left-handed people, redheads, and the periodic table of elements, you can believe in nonbinary folks too. It's time we bust these binaries, call out all these cisnomartive nonsense, and wear your gender however the hell you want.

It's a concept we all grew up with, and it's certainly shaped the way Hollywood tells stories about sex, but have you ever stopped to ask where the idea of virginity even came from? In this bonus episode, DB breaks down the history of virginity as a social construct, how it's been used to control women, and why the hymen was never a reliable “proof” of anything. What would sex look and feel like if it wasn't about losing something? Let's rethink the way we talk about first-time sex! This I believe is the right time for this episode for we introverts with festive season at its peak. I explore how we socialise on our own terms during the high-energy, high expectation festive season. As an introvert myself, I've often faced misconceptions that I'm antisocial, shy or arrogant. Apparently, introverts avoid people. We do not. It is about managing our social and emotional energy wisely. It is more about how societal pressures affect we introverts both at work and in family situations. It is about respecting our own boundaries while giving ourselves the permission to enjoy social events meaningfully. It is about being discerning with invites using our personal selective socialisation blueprint. *** Key Points *** Understand and respect our boundaries with social invites. Communicating polite yet firm 'no' Set your intentions mindfully *** Resources *** Visit https://hub.flourishingintroverts.com/resourcesp for tools and resources mentioned during the podcast.

In the debut episode of “Notes on a Native Son,” host Razia Iqbal sits down with essayist and novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates to discuss one of his favorite passages from the works of writer James Baldwin. His choice comes from Baldwin's essay “On Being ‘White'…And Other Lies,” published in Essence Magazine in 1984. Coates shares why this piece resonates with him as a writer tackling whiteness, race and what it means to be an American today. Coates is the author of the bestselling books “Between the World and Me” and “The Water Dancer.” His latest book, “The Message,” (published October 2024) documents the time he spent in Palestine, Senegal and South Carolina — and details why the stories we do and don't tell from areas of conflict matter. Send us a Text Message.Could navigating the complexities of race and racial justice finally be as simple as recognizing a metaphorical open jar? Join me, Whitney, and my brother, Dr. Jordan Knox, on the Impostrix Podcast as we explore this compelling question. Dr. Knox, a scholar in African American Studies, brings his academic expertise to our discussion, helping us unpack the historical roots and modern-day implications of racial constructs. We start our journey from early human migrations to the dark chapters of the transcontinental slave trade, and onto the significant transitions in racial categorization during the early American colonies. Our conversation takes a deep dive into the contrasting strategies of the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, scrutinizing their respective impacts on societal change. We untangle the legacy of nonviolent protests juxtaposed against the backdrop of gang violence and the crack epidemic, all while proposing actionable solutions like economic boycotts and political participation. By addressing both systemic and personal aspects of racism, we reflect on how modern digital interactions perpetuate biases and what it means to engage meaningfully in advocacy without becoming overwhelmed by the fight. Finally, we explore the profound psychological toll that racism inflicts on mental health and societal well-being. Through the lens of historical context and personal anecdotes, we consider how future generations might experience and combat racial trauma. Emphasizing the importance of community support, we highlight Black spaces as sanctuaries of understanding and healing. Inspired by a Bollywood movie on civil rights, we conclude with an empowering call to action: Recognize and seize the freedoms available to you, just like a grasshopper in a jar—with the lid off. In this episode, we'll embark on a sort of time-displacing odyssey in which we consider the idea—based on scientific discoveries and paradigm-shattering theories—that linear time is nothing more than an intricate and clever illusion. A trick of the mind per se. What does it mean for this to be true and how might we evolve our own perspective so that we can free ourselves to live beyond the illusion of time? Summary This is the episode I needed several times in my life but it didn't exist back then. In "How to Bite Back," I examine the common misconception that kindness is weakness. We introverts so often feel the pressure to people-please at the expense of our own well-being. In this episode I aim to empower listeners who identify as people-pleasers to hold boundaries both for self-care and to maintain healthy relationships. Being assertive is standing up for your rights and needs, whilst respecting the rights and needs of others. I share my ABC framework—Assertiveness, Bravery, Confidence - for we introverts to stand up for ourselves with poise and dignity, to bite back with kindness and transparency. Key Points Kindness isn't weakness; set boundaries. Assertiveness respects self and others. Communication involves listening and understanding. PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: What Type of Introvert are you? What does it mean to be a good mom? Society has created this image of what it means to be "good" in the role, and it can be summed up through The Perfect Mother Myth. So this week, I am unpacking the expectations we are held to under this social construct with the intention of bringing awareness to the absurdity of what is expected of mothers and why we have to check ourselves when it comes to the standards we are holding ourselves to. I'm sharing The Perfect Mother Myth as it has been discussed through my work with Motherhood Studies Sociologist Dr. Sophie Brock, and also presenting Professor Andrea O'Reilly's 8 Rules of Good Mothering to illustrate just how intense the unspoken rules for mothers are. This isn't just my experience - the myth of the perfect mother is based on real research of what is expected of moms. Episode Summary. Is anything more beautiful, spectacular, and wonderful than God's creation of WOMAN? I think not. She is the crowning achievement of God's creation process. She is the one for whom a husband is to die. Yet, we live in a culture that has profoundly marred the portrait of fulfilled womanhood as God designed it to be—and it is our feminine loved ones who are suffering from it. This episode seeks to put a spotlight on 4 worldviews in our culture that MISSHAPE our loved ones' views of womanhood in sharp contrast to God's perfect design revealed in Scripture. We then examine this portrait in the person of Mary, the mother of Jesus, so that we who are husbands, fathers and grandfathers can help our female loved ones delight in biblical womanhood instead of being ashamed of it.For Further Prayerful Thought: Which of the 4 pollutant worldviews in our culture about womanhood concern you most? Which of the 4 pollutant worldviews in our culture have you found hardest to refute? What part of Mary's beauty most stood out to you? What part of Peter's portrait of womanhood, also seen in Mary, do you want to most remember to notice in your feminine lived ones so you can praise them for it?For the printed version of this message click here. For a summary of topics addressed by podcast series, click here. For FREE downloadable studies on men's issues click here.To make an online contribution to enable others to hear about the podcast: (Click link and scroll down to bottom left)

You may know by now that I could preach all day about how women are programmed by the patriarchy to show up in this world in very specific ways that primarily (and almost exclusively) benefit white men. Please know when I say “patriarchy” I am referring to a system that is not only harmful to women but also undermines and completely stunts the emotional development of most men. This system benefits few, but the few who benefit have the most tremendous power - globally. Our patriarchal society has created tons of social constructs that lead us to unknowingly behave in ways that benefit some (men) while holding others back (including but not limited to: women, people of color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, people with neurodiversities, people with disabilities, and people with larger bodies) Over the years, I've talked about mom guilt as a social construct and imposter syndrome as a social construct. Both of these social constructs are part of a system that intentionally makes women and moms think and behave in specific ways that ultimately limit how they show up in the world. These limitations create more space for others (men) to have more opportunities to find success, build wealth, and amass power. I recently started doing some thinking on perfectionism as a social construct. Once I started thinking this through, I knew there had to be research to back up my hypotheses. So, I went and found it. In today's episode, I'm going to talk about perfectionism as a social construct. We will dig into different forms of perfectionism, as well as how you can start to reject perfectionism in order to get out of your head and get on with your life. Buckle up. This is a good one! Jenn and Katy continue to unpack chapters of Them Before Us; Why We Need a Global Children's Rights Movement. This podcast expounds on Chapter Three: Gender Matters. They deep dive into the cultural “gender is a social construct” nomenclature, and make the case that “parenting” is a misnomer; the reality is that “parenting” is best defined as “mothering” and “fathering.”

We'll discuss the different male masks like the athlete, womanizer or financial king. Joshua, Jude, and Brendan are prepping for Notre Dame football's spring practice period by prepping for the prep with some podding. Got it? In this episode: HELLO! It was a bloody mess. REVIEWS! Our listeners tripped over themselves to defend the honor of the podcast, and we are here for that (and mostly that by the sound of it). Notre Dame to the Big 10? No... but we break out the conference realignment talk which is mostly about money. Brendan makes a fool of himself with a frozen pizza take that is the trashiest that we've ever heard. We ate an entire wheel of cheese (again). Remembering toll road beverages. We ain't cringe, buddy. Brendan's Spotify playlist was a hit. Renaissance man. Brendan can't pronounce Gino Guidugli and Jude KNOWS it. The fake QB competition between Sam Hartman and Tyler Buchner. Getting the quarterback progression right is not something Notre Dame has done well over the last 20 years. Spring football is a social construct. Rank Everything: Top 5 Mall Stores from peak Mallhood. Rub down of Notre Dame's winter sports happenings. And plenty more weaved in and out of the show. Please RATE and REVIEW! The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 101 James Lindsay, host of the New Discourses Podcast, gets asked all the time about what really got him started in his campaign against Woke Marxism. Invariably, the conversation includes a discussion of the Grievance Studies Affair, but what triggered that? Before the Grievance Studies Affair (https://newdiscourses.com/2020/01/academic-grievance-studies-and-the-corruption-of-scholarship/ ), there was "The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct" (https://www.skeptic.com/downloads/conceptual-penis/23311886.2017.1330439.pdf/ ), and before the Conceptual Penis, there was a real academic paper called "Glaciers, Gender, and Science: A Feminist Glaciology Framework for Global Environmental Change Research" (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0309132515623368/ ) by four researchers from the University of Oregon, writing on a significant National Science Foundation grant. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, James revisits this paper and shares with you exactly what it says, now understood in great clarity. Join him to hear how he was "radicalized" to start fighting the Woke in a serious manner, in their own words. Work-life balance is a social construct. It is an idea and philosophy that is sold to women as something to be desired, something to be attained, and something to aspire to. The myth that work-life balance can actually exist is a crappy bill of goods sold to us by the Patriarchy. As feminism has evolved over the last few decades, we have been told, “YAY! Women can have it all.” But we have been given no resources and no support. There has been no systemic restructuring (philosophical or logistical) to shift our expected full-time household and parental contributions as we take on other societal roles. We have been conditioned that because we can have it all, we should go after it all. And then once we go after it all and fill every millimeter and pore of our metaphorical plates, we should also keep it all balanced in some picture-perfect mathematical ratio - as if our lives are as simple as some sort of formula or squeaky clean quadratic equation. We are told if we have better balance, we wouldn't be so stressed out all the time. We are told if we have better balance, we will be better moms and our kids will be more likely to thrive. We are told we are lucky to live in an era where we can work full time (if not more) and also parent full time - cramming 48 hours of work into every 24-hour day. Because we are told this myth is possible, we are left to feel inadequate, guilty, and resentful when we cannot figure out how to make it work. When we are working, we feel guilty that we aren't parenting. When we are parenting, we feel guilty that we aren't working. When men set aspirational goals around work-life balance and do things like, say, coach their kids' soccer team, we say, “Wow, he's such an involved father.” When is the last time you heard someone say, “Wow, she's such an involved mom.” We just are. Involved, engaged, ON… 24/7. If you feel like you don't have a work-life balance, it's because there is no such thing. So, how will you make peace with this crappy bill of goods we have been sold?
