It's a concept we all grew up with, and it's certainly shaped the way Hollywood tells stories about sex, but have you ever stopped to ask where the idea of virginity even came from? In this bonus episode, DB breaks down the history of virginity as a social construct, how it's been used to control women, and why the hymen was never a reliable “proof” of anything. What would sex look and feel like if it wasn't about losing something? Let's rethink the way we talk about first-time sex! Mentioned in this episode: "The 40 Year Old Virgin": The Bro Comedy That Hates Women Planned Parenthood on Virginity

This I believe is the right time for this episode for we introverts with festive season at its peak.   I explore how we socialise on our own terms during the high-energy, high expectation festive season. As an introvert myself, I've often faced misconceptions that I'm antisocial, shy or arrogant.    Apparently, introverts avoid people. We do not. It is about managing our social and emotional energy wisely. It is more about how societal pressures affect we introverts both at work and in family situations.   It is about respecting our own boundaries while giving ourselves the permission to enjoy social events meaningfully. It is about being discerning with invites using our personal selective socialisation blueprint.     *** Key Points ***   Understand and respect our boundaries with social invites. Communicating polite yet firm 'no' Set your intentions mindfully   *** Resources ***   Visit https://hub.flourishingintroverts.com/resourcesp for tools and resources mentioned during the podcast.

Being very mindful, and very intentional, about who gets access to our energy, and under what circumstances.Kindly kicking what doesn't serve us to the curb, while making space for all the people, places, and situations that are ultimately for us, without a question! Change Requires a Change in Behaviour | Take Inventory of What Habits Help or Hinder You as You Grow Much of our growth can be highlighted in the behaviours and habits we take on, throughout the different stages and phases in life. Some of this habits are healthy, and become rooted in our behaviours and how we show up, while others are a bit more nuanced. There are some behaviours that we adopt, especially if we've survived trauma, or are surviving really jarring situations, that serve us so long as that even and circumstance is still ongoing. But once we reach the end of the chapter of our lives, it's time to assess if whether those behaviours, help or hinder our ability to heal, and to find our way back to aligning our behaviours with our own sense of identity. There are no wrong answers, just maybe answers we might not be ready to act on. But in all cases, if survival required you to show up differently, it's for you to decide what of those tendencies you keep, and what aspects of self you allow to shine, once the dust settles. Setting Realistic Expectations & Establishing Realistic Timelines | Understanding Speed vs. Accuracy While desire can enable us to be motivated to push towards our goals, as excited as we are, our will has no influence on the time required to accomplish a desired objective. Whether you're setting aggressive or conservative timelines, the things we push towards take time to be accomplished. Did you take less time than expected, know that you've compromised on something. Whether that's quality, comprehensiveness, or functionality, there is as much a risk involved when getting things done too quickly, as there is when getting done too slowly. You've got to find a balance. And the right balance, is often toeing the line between speed and accuracy. Do you have any questions? 3 Reasons Not to Hold a Grudge | Allow People to Be Who They Want & Choosing to Respond, Accordingly We all know that the "noble" thing to do is to let it go, yet why do most of us struggle to keep negative people, places, and circumstances skew our way of viewing the world. Oftentimes, it's the bitterness and resentment that stems from not letting things go, as in, holding our grudge that keeps us from changing for the better. Lukewarm Friendships Do Not Serve You | Focusing on a Healthy Relationship with Self Brings Clarity No one really highlights the damage that can be caused by lukewarm friendships. The ones who are there for a good time, but are nowhere to be found when you experience a crisis, or are going through a challenge. Who sometimes are the ones who are indifferent and passive in witnessing your mistreatment, and invalidate your experiences. We want to respect their agency, so we feel inclined to respect their silence. Even when it hurts, even when it would have meant everything if they had checked in or spoken up. If there's one thing that fostering a healthy relationship with myself has taught me, invest your time and energy into people who value you as much as you do (and will come to), you'll be surprised at what you will no longer make the space to tolerate. Master the Art of Checking In with Self | 4 Steps to Support Your Emotions & Further Inner Discovery Many of us aren't living the lives that we want, because we are too afraid to fail. However we define failure, it feels like a such a crippling experiencing, we would rather play small and live life unsatisfied, then to deal with it head on. While I like to put the majority of the blame on the schooling system, we each have a role to play, when it comes to the behaviours we allow that hurt us and that help us. This includes the way we navigate the possibility of failing. In truth, if you've never failed, you've never really tried. Living and learning, it involves failing as a prerequisite. You're not going to know what to do if you're embracing the experience of figuring it out. It's pretty much how you figure things out... failing your way to success. And unless you embrace the bumps and bruises that come with the failures that pave your way to success... the likelihood that you'll experiencing succeeding (by the million and one definitions of success), is likely small. So don't play small. Do you have any questions? Embracing the Learning Curve | We Stumble Our Way to Proficiency & Inadequacy Comes Before Mastery When was the last time you learned something new? Specifically, something that took time, energy, and effort to fully understand? So much of the advice we receive is to play to our strengths. To focus on the areas we naturally excel, and to chart a path on that trajectory. In the same breath, we are actively discouraged to try and cultivate proficiency in areas that aren't naturally accessible to us, rather than encouraged and supported to make the effort to bridge the gap. Playing to our strengths is one way to live, but there is so much passion and potential to charting a development path that doesn't take strength or weakness into consideration. Following your curiosity, whether it leads you down a path where you are naturally talented or otherwise, is the best way to never wonder if you sold yourself short. Do you have any questions? Protecting Your Agency | Dignity in Retaining Your Choice, Your Personal Power and Using Your Voice Your personal agency is a threat to others. While it blows my mind to recognize the extent with which this holds true, it's important that we recognize it. Your ability to blaze your own path and make your own choices, is a bitter pill to swallow for anyone who is deluded enough to believe they can make better choices concerning your life, for you. What I find personally harrowing about this realization is that it's often the people who themselves have made choices that are wildly questionable who seem to think that controlling your life, will make them feel better about the lack of control they have of their own lives. If the American election can be anything at all for the rest of the world watching, let it be a cautionary tale on what happens when you give anyone the impression that you don't take your power to choose seriously. If you haven't taken your ability to choose seriously up until now, let's all make a commitment to never lose that insight. Do you have any questions? Win the War on Choice | How Developing Critical Thinking Enables You to Protect Your Personal Agency You don't need to look very far to find examples of people, institutions, and government bodies in society that take issue with personal agency. One of the greatest examples of democracy, the United States of America, has chosen a government that intends on stripping people of choices that we long believed to be fundamental human rights. What enabled this advancement? A lack of critical thinking. Which is a skill, a tool that our education systems across North America do very little in developing. There are serious implications when we find ourselves making decisions that serve governments, institutions, public or private, who's mandate is specifically to limit your range of decision-making, The current political climate presents a cautionary tale. It could happy at any level, and to anyone of us. So - if you're starting to think about what New Year's resolutions are worth your time... focus on expanding your ability to think critically on the issues that concern you and your loved ones the most. Attention is Finite. Before Calling it ADHD How Much Energy Are You Expending Trying to be Engaged? Paying attention takes energy. Paying attention when the content isn't engaging, and the environment also requires you to self-regulate by sitting still and staying quiet is all the more challenging. Why? Because focus is a finite resource. We can keep the muscle flexed for long before it needs to take a break. The same with attention. Attention without engagement burns through a lot of the resources that we have at our disposal to stay focused and to learn. Many individuals are quick to criticize when there are some who struggle to pay attention, failing to recognize that they've tapped out on focus and self-regulation, because those burn out quickly when not super-fuelled by being engaged. Video games are engaging - and people can't get enough of it. Rather than self-identify as having ADHD why not find out what makes content or learning engaging for you, as an initial first step. The Aftermath of Trauma | How to Celebrate Your Survival Story & Make the Choice Not to be a Victim While we rarely had a say in the cases where we've been victimized, how we respond, is always our choice. It's a significant and an instrumental choice. We can choose the narrative by which we share the situations and circumstances we survived. Emphasis on survived. Many people have long since moved on in all intents and purposes, except for the ways the think about and communicate those situations. Many who have been battling with bitterness and resentment for years... Never realizing that creating space for that kind of negative energy, doesn't help you heal, and ultimately limits your capacity to grow. So what path to take? Join me, Whitney, and my brother, Dr. Jordan Knox, on the Impostrix Podcast as we explore this compelling question. Dr. Knox, a scholar in African American Studies, brings his academic expertise to our discussion, helping us unpack the historical roots and modern-day implications of racial constructs. We start our journey from early human migrations to the dark chapters of the transcontinental slave trade, and onto the significant transitions in racial categorization during the early American colonies. Our conversation takes a deep dive into the contrasting strategies of the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, scrutinizing their respective impacts on societal change. We untangle the legacy of nonviolent protests juxtaposed against the backdrop of gang violence and the crack epidemic, all while proposing actionable solutions like economic boycotts and political participation. By addressing both systemic and personal aspects of racism, we reflect on how modern digital interactions perpetuate biases and what it means to engage meaningfully in advocacy without becoming overwhelmed by the fight. Finally, we explore the profound psychological toll that racism inflicts on mental health and societal well-being. Through the lens of historical context and personal anecdotes, we consider how future generations might experience and combat racial trauma. Emphasizing the importance of community support, we highlight Black spaces as sanctuaries of understanding and healing. Inspired by a Bollywood movie on civil rights, we conclude with an empowering call to action: Recognize and seize the freedoms available to you, just like a grasshopper in a jar—with the lid off. A trick of the mind per se. What does it mean for this to be true and how might we evolve our own perspective so that we can free ourselves to live beyond the illusion of time? We'll explore all this and more.Continued Reading + ResourcesChopra, D. and Kafatos, M. (2017). You Are the Universe: Discovering Your Cosmic Self and Why It Matters. Summary This is the episode I needed several times in my life but it didn't exist back then. In "How to Bite Back," I examine the common misconception that kindness is weakness. We introverts so often feel the pressure to people-please at the expense of our own well-being. In this episode I aim to empower listeners who identify as people-pleasers to hold boundaries both for self-care and to maintain healthy relationships. Being assertive is standing up for your rights and needs, whilst respecting the rights and needs of others. I share my ABC framework—Assertiveness, Bravery, Confidence - for we introverts to stand up for ourselves with poise and dignity, to bite back with kindness and transparency. Key Points Kindness isn't weakness; set boundaries. Assertiveness respects self and others. Communication involves listening and understanding. PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: What Type of Introvert are you? What does it mean to be a good mom? Society has created this image of what it means to be "good" in the role, and it can be summed up through The Perfect Mother Myth. So this week, I am unpacking the expectations we are held to under this social construct with the intention of bringing awareness to the absurdity of what is expected of mothers and why we have to check ourselves when it comes to the standards we are holding ourselves to. I'm sharing The Perfect Mother Myth as it has been discussed through my work with Motherhood Studies Sociologist Dr. Sophie Brock, and also presenting Professor Andrea O'Reilly's 8 Rules of Good Mothering to illustrate just how intense the unspoken rules for mothers are. This isn't just my experience - the myth of the perfect mother is based on real research of what is expected of moms. Can you relate?Download your free Aligned Motherhood workbook mentioned in this episode to start getting clear on your values and creating your fulfilled motherhood.
