Cullman is the largest city and county seat of Cullman County, Alabama..located just 50 miles north of Birmingham. Five German families moved to the area in March 1873; and by 1874, the town was incorporated and named after Colonel Cullmann. Over the next 20 years, Cullmann encouraged around 100,000 Germans to immigrate to the United States, with many settling in the Cullman area. In the 1840s monks from Metten Abbey in Germany, a monastery founded in 700 A.D., came to America, to minister to the growing German-speaking immigrant population. St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, became the first foundation of the German monks, and in the 1870s monks from St. Vincent were sent to Alabama to serve the needs of German Catholics. In 1891 those monks gathered to establish St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama. One of those monks, was Bavarian born Joseph Zoettl, the creator of Ave Maria Grotto.[FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA & MORE]TWITTER: www.twitter.com/SouthernOddPodINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/SouthernOddPodJARED'S TWITTER: www.twitter.com/jared_ordisJARED'S INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/jared.ordis[ADDITONAL INFORMATION]Questions or Business Inquiry, Email Us @ ordisstudios@gmail.comResearched was used for this episode of Southern Oddities, and we couldn't have made it possible without the journalism and dedication from these awesome sources of information: Roadside America [Story 2015] Ave Maria Grotto [Main Website] Wikipedia [Ave Maria Grotto] Wikipedia [Cullman, Alabama] Encyclopedia of Alabama [Ave Maria Grotto] Atlas Obscura [Ave Maria Grotto] The Bama Buzz [The Hidden History of Cullams Ave Maria Grotto] St Bernard Abbey [Main Website]"Southern Oddities" is created & produced by Jared Ordis, an Ordis Studios production. After losing her 4-year-old granddaughter, Maggie Grant, to acute myeloid leukemia, Lori Luckhard wanted to do something. Another idea Lori taking orders for gold ribbons, an effort started by Lana Turner & #FightlikeLanaGrace. When it comes to support, the City of Cullman, Cullman County, area businesses, families, & individuals have done a great job getting behind these efforts. On today's show, Lori is joining me to share about these efforts. I hope that you will listen in and are encouraged and inspired where you are to take action when it comes to childhood cancer. Former President Donald Trump paid a visit to the Heart of Dixie last week. Obviously, this is Trump country. Alabama was one of Trump's best states in the 2020 Election. He got an amazing 65% of the vote in our state. If the turnout for his August 21 rally in rural Cullman County is any indication, he would get that same margin of victory this year if the election were held again. Many of those in attendance were insistent that Trump won last year's presidential contest and that it was stolen from him. The event was held on a desolate...Article Link

The View from Brindley Mountain: A Memoir of the Rural South by Eugene Scruggs Second Edition This nonfiction work takes the reader on a trip through the 1940s and ’50s in the rural South. The story unfolds in the lower reaches of the Appalachian Mountain chain on a plateau called Brindley Mountain. A part of the Sand Mountain Ridge, the area covers lower Morgan County and north east Cullman County. In an earlier time, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Creek hunted in relative peace across these ridges and valleys of north-central Alabama. In 1873, a young, rebellious Bavarian named Johann Gottfried Cullmann came into the area seeking a peaceful haven for his immigrating countrymen. He ultimately selected a large swath of this gently-sloping and pine-forested wilderness for his new Deutsche Kolonie. Other hardly pioneers began to homestead the free federal lands. This produced a rather odd mingling for the rural South. A fledgling town grew rapidly with its blacksmith shops, cotton gins, grist mills, ice house, and merchant class. On a hardscrabble farm south of this bustling county seat, a young boy grew to manhood dreaming of future journeys and conquests. On the back porch of a little clapboard house, this would-be traveler contemplated the wide horizon stretching out in all directions, full of seemingly endless possibilities and challenges. Dr. C. Eugene Scruggs retired following a long career as professor and administrator in higher education. Dr. Scruggs’s career covered forty years at four US universities and two European. He was visiting professor at the University of Paris and a tutor for a summer program at Cambridge England. During his career, Scruggs led many study tours to Europe, Central and South America. He served two terms as chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Following his retirement, Scruggs published three books and coedited one other. His lifelong hobby has been art. He has created several hundred watercolor and pastel painting. More recently his passion has been vocal music, from Barbershop to Gospel, to Western. Scruggs currently lives in a retirement community in Lakeland, Florida, where he is actively involved in educational and enrichment programs for senior citizens. He welcomes comments from readers via e-mail at scruggsgene@aol.com. https://www.stratton-press.com/books/the-view-from-brindley-mountain-a-memoir-of-the-rural-south/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/strpress1.mp3

That's what Dawn Owens learned when she moved down South to Cullman, Alabama, and started a nonprofit, the Link of Cullman County, after seeing a need for it in her new community. Through talking to one person who led her to more community connections, Dawn got the ball rolling for her organization and built the momentum needed to help it grow. Four years later, she joins Driving Participation to talk about how she got that momentum started and kept it sustained. She talks about a grant contest the Link entered and how she used Facebook Live to create interest and engagement around the project—even interest from those who hadn't had any interaction with the organization before.
Good morning folks! Within the Trenches is back for episode 26! I had the pleasure of sitting down and speaking with Roger of Cullman County 9-1-1 out of Alabama and Craig who is retired out of Guilford Metro 9-1-1 in North Carolina. This episode is a must listen as both Roger and Craig go through their history with 9-1-1 and how it pulled them in. Craig had emergency services in his blood, so to speak, since his father and uncle’s helped form several volunteer fire departments. Roger on the other hand was first part of the defense industry. Once he retired from there he moved into emergency services and became a 9-1-1 director after long admiring the profession. This episode is a must listen. The history and look back at how 9-1-1 was before more recent technology is very interesting. As always you can email the show at thejcast@thejabberlog.com for comments, concerns suggestions or if you would like to be on the show.
