Sherri Snelling, corporate gerontologist and “Caregiving Club On Air” podcast host, focuses this February episode on National Caregiver Day (Feb 17), Soulmates & Solo Agers for Valentine's Day (Feb 14), Heart Health Month & Go Red for Women (Feb 3). Our expert guest is Carina Edwards, CEO of Quil, a joint venture between Independence Health Group (Independence) and Comcast, to tell us about how technology is supporting the role of family caregiver for older adults living alone at home. For Valentine's Day Sherri shares statistics on men who are caregivers and reflects on her friendship with Dan Gasby and the late B. Smith – a caregiving love story. Sherri also shares recent research in Caregiver Wellness and a story about women and what to know about heart health. In Well Home Design News, Sherri talks about the challenges for solo agers and some of the innovations in Maine – where per capita there are more people over age 60 than anywhere else in the country. She also talks about tips from a recent article she wrote for Porch on what to know before you ask Mom or Dad to come live with you. As always, we end the episode with a Me Time Monday Wellness Hack – this one on the power of the color Red for heart health and for love.
Dan Gasby was thrust into the role of caregiver when his wife, B Smith, was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. He's since become one of the country's most outspoken advocates on dementia. Gasby shares his personal experiences in hopes that we'll all be better prepared if and when we become caregivers.

We're launching this episode on February 14 – Valentine's Day – so it's a perfect time to look at the special caregiving role of spouses and partners. This episode also celebrates National Caregiver Day on February 18 and the ways we can practice more self-care at any time but especially when caregiving and in our home living environments. In this episode we talk to Dr. Jessica Zitter, a hospice and critical care doctor who is also a documentary filmmaker. She talks to us about her new film, “Caregiver: A Love Story” which is a poignant picture of what spouses go through when their partner is diagnosed with a terminal illness. We learn about what palliative care is and how to prepare for loss of a loved one. Sherri also provides Caregiver Wellness information specifically for spouses and partners who tend to take on more physical caregiving tasks themselves that can impact their health over time. And since “love” is the theme for this episode, Sherri shares in Pop Culture some of the celebrity caregiving love stories of people she has interviewed on TV and for articles including: lifestyle guru B. Smith and her husband Dan Gasby, Kim Campbell wife of country music star Glen Campbell, and Sylvia Mackey, wife of NFL Super Bowl star of the 60s and 70s “No. 88” former Baltimore Colt, John Mackey. She also highlights her favorite caregiving love story movies. For Well Home Design, Sherri talks about how to create Sanctuary Spaces in our homes for much-needed escapes for caregivers. As always, the episode ends with Sherri's Me Time Monday Wellness Hack explaining the color psychology and scientific studies behind pink colors, pink clouds, living with rose-colored glasses and looking for silver linings.

Mr. Hallease and I weigh in on the much-debated discussion of B. Smith and her husband Dan Gasby. What does it truly mean to love someone "for better or worse" and "in sickness and in health?" How does the definition of marriage evolve as we age and our roles inevitably change? This was a really hard topic to cover on the Beast Cast, it forces us all to come to terms with mortality and the different ways we can lose a spouse even when they're still technically living. Happy Monday! It’s February, the month of love, Valentine’s Day, and all of those things. When we think about love, we often think about marriage. For most people, marriage means many things, including ‘til death do us part. We’re in a society that accepts divorce, so that’s one way many people have chosen to leave their marriage. We consider their particular situation and our opinion on how he’s handled being a caregiver to his wife, who has Alzheimer’s disease. As always, we discuss who needs friends this week – and there are a lot of them, including; The Game, all of VA’s leadership, Bow Wow, and these Luxury Brands. As always, thanks for listening!
