Imagine the tropical grooves of Colombia and Mexico in an avant-garde setting. That's the ethos of Ruido Tovar; the new collaborative project between Eblis Alvarez of Meridian Brothers and Camilo Lara of the Mexican Institute of Sound.  Before releasing their debut self-titled record together, both Alvarez and Lara were known to experiment with electronics, fusing modern sounds with music styles that are typically considered traditional. Alvarez put a spin on cumbia and salsa with his band Meridian Brothers, while Lara pushed the electronica movement in Mexico forward with his project, the Mexican Institute of Sound.  Coming together as Ruido Tovar, the duo joins the Soundcheck host, John Schaefer, with their pocket-sized effects pedals and compact synthesizers to perform some new songs from their new record and discuss their journey in music thus far.  (- Sırma Munyar) Setlist: 1. Early on, she did theater in primary school, later picked up a camera, and even performed competitively in Bachata and Latin Dance during college. Seeking a change of scenery and a "nomadic lifestyle," she left the Bay Area after her time at West Valley College to continue studying communications at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.After graduating, Jasmine worked in higher education, coordinating operations at the university's College of Natural Sciences. There, she fell in love with student mentorship, managing interns, and supporting faculty by anticipating the small, human details that keep a large operation running smoothly.Despite building a deeply rooted community in the desert, a persistent pull toward home eventually brought her back to San Jose. Returning required an intentional effort to reconnect, leading her out to local creative hubs like the Goodtime Bar run club, local galleries, and regional photography meetups. In this episode of the Creative Genius podcast, I interview Rebe Huntman about her debut memoir, "My Mother in Havana, a memoir of magic and miracle." Rebe shares her personal story of losing her mother at a young age and the subsequent decades of feeling disconnected from her memory. Driven by a deep longing and intuition, Rebe embarked on a 30-day DIY pilgrimage to Cuba to seek a different perspective on grief and connection. The conversation delves into how Rebe's background as a Latin dancer led her to discover the spiritual roots of Cuban dances and the traditions of honoring the deceased.  Rebe recounts her experiences immersing herself in rituals dedicated to the goddess Oshun, visiting the sanctuary of Cuba's patron saint, and meeting with a spiritist who she hoped would connect her with her mother.Rebe and I discuss the importance of intuition and following one's unique path, even when it doesn't seem logical. Isabel trained under the Cobo Brothers Dance Company in North Carolina for seven years, traveling the world teaching and performing. In 2013 Isabel moved to New York City to pursue a solo career and to deepen her study of New York Salsa, Afro-cuban dances, partnered acrobatics, as well dabbling in styles such as heels, modern, and contemporary dance. She prides herself on continuing to prioritize her own training and learning. Since living in New York City, Isabel has made a name for herself through different partnerships, teams and solo as well, traveling to teach and perform and Latin Dance congresses all over the world. She is the sole director/owner of her own student team Isa Dance Project that continues to grow and improve. Isabel has recently shifted her focus slightly away from the global congress scene to pursue a career in dance theater in NYC. She most recently participated in two hit immersive musical, dance theater shows in New York City. She played the lead role in the production of “Carmen , to Havana and Back.” She also was lead costume designer as well as ensemble dancer in the production of “Midsummer, A Shakespearience.”As an instructor, Isabel is dedicated to the growth of her students while sharing the rich historical and cultural roots of the various Latin Dances as we know them today.
