It's a big week here on the podcast with lots to celebrate! It's Dark Matter week! Coming off the heels of the film experience, we'll share our instant reaction to listening to the album in that environment including what songs we've gravitated towards, and what we're excited to hear live. Keep in mind that the Live On 4 Legs listening party will happen on Thursday night when the record drops everywhere, if you want to be a part of that round table, please reach out! Although the brand new record is the lead, we don't want to bury the purpose of the episode because it's extremely vital to the history of Pearl Jam. The Paramount Theater show to close out the 1994 tour in the gallows of Madison Square Garden was one of a few fan club shows from this year. It comes a day after their legendary Saturday Night Live performance, a little over the week since the death of Kurt Cobain, and it is the final show involving drummer Dave Abbruzzese. While the fan club crowd was red hot and participated in every song from the hits to the b-sides, this was a night where Ed had a lot on his mind as he was unsure about the future of this band. We share excerpts from an article written in Melody Maker where a frustrated Vedder expresses his anger over Kurt's death and even questions his own mortality. Directly following this show, Pearl Jam would cancel their plans for a summer tour and part with Dave A shortly afterwards. Big storylines aside, this is an electric show with some absolute barnburner performances. Rearviewmirror, Daughter and Not For You all came off the heels of the SNL performance the night prior and proved to be just as powerful as they were on TV, other Vitalogy songs such as Whipping and Satan's Bed are notable moments, Ten b-sides Alone and Footsteps were huge crowd moments and Garden and Blood were huge standouts as well. We'll have a plethora of guests here as Javier's Gear Guru segments will focus in on Dave A's contributions to the band, and we invite Patrick and Brian from our sister podcast, Hallucinogenic Recipe, to come in and discuss the bootleg distribution for this show back in the mid-90's. This episode begins our coverage celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pearl Jam's Vs. tour in 1994. With this tour falling smack dab in the middle of the band's prime, there are a plethora of storylines inside and outside of the shows that make this year a memorable one. Vitalogy songs were getting played in the set prior to the album's release, legendary shows took place in cities such as Boston and Atlanta, dealing with Ticketmaster, bomb threats, backstage break-ins, and Dave Abbruzzese exit from the band. This episode features a Rock For Choice show that took place in Pensacola, Florida a year after the death of Dr. David Gunn, a doctor who performed safe abortions on women who were unable to birth a child. The band has actively supported a women's right to choose going back to their formation. You may remember moments such as Ed wearing a t-shirt with a coat hanger on it during their 1992 performance on Saturday Night Live, and most famously at MTV Unplugged where Ed wrote pro-choice on his arm with a marker. The point of the episode is to discuss some of the band's history of activism, but also within the nature of our world at this current moment, it was extremely difficult to provide an episode on abortion rights without addressing what's going on. That means you will get to hear our heartfelt opinions on the subject at hand. If this is something that you are uncomfortable listening to at this point in time, please take note of that before checking out the podcast. The entire night had references (some subtle, others not so much) to the cause that they were fighting to defend, none more relevant than opening with a cover of Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down. The performances are the height of the era with the band absolutely locked in, and Ed tearing into the vocals on songs such as Dissident, Glorified G, Blood, Alive, Porch and many more. We also get to hear a speech from David Gunn Jr. as well as instances where Ed will attack the subject head on. Let's stick in 1993 for this episode and head over to Nacogdoches, Texas, a show that takes place only days after Ed's arrest in New Orleans that we talked about last week. This show yet again presents all of the trials and tribulations of being on tour in 1993. After playing nearly non-stop, and spending their off days working on and recording brand new music, the rigorous travel had finally gotten to the health of Dave Abbruzzese where he is needed to rush to the emergency room after the main set. This left for the band to improvise an encore without drums.  We invite one of the most knowledgeable Pearl Jam minds onto the show that wrote THE book chronicling the history and timeline of Pearl Jam in PJ20, Jonathan Cohen. Jonathan joins us to give a little bit of context to the era and why the band had a difficult time dealing with their skyrocketing popularity, and what they did to seek the advice of rock 'n' roll's elder statesmen to help guide them through. We'll also talk a little bit about Pearl Jam's 2024 plans and what you can expect from a new album year! We'll spend some time on some interesting setlist decisions from this show, including the choice to open with the Daughter/Glorified G combination, Sonic Reducer in the middle of the main set and of course the decisions made without Dave on hand. The Gear Guru segments will break down both Yellow Ledbetter and Footsteps that were performed without drums at this show. This episode, we rock Portland! May 17th is former drummer Dave Abbruzzese's birthday, so we decided to go back to the only show where he played with the band on this date from 1992. A lot of the conversation will be directed towards Dave and how well he was clicking with the band just less than a year since joining them. His bombastic, hard pounding style is in the forefront of this show, and we'll focus on songs like Oceans, Why Go and State Of Love And Trust that he's a standout on. This show is also the debut of Dave's first song he wrote for the band, Angel. Will we get to hear from Dave himself about the development of the song? You'll just have to tune in! We'll discuss the meteoric rise of the band during this time period. The show happened days after the first airing of MTV Unplugged and only a few weeks away from the iconic Pinkpop show, so their popularity was just on the verge of skyrocketing. This is also a great show for Mike McCready who is showing off his talents in songs such as Alive, Black, SOLAT and Porch, and we'll get to talk about some era-specific improvs as well. For the question of the week, we'll read your answers on what songs from the post-Dave A era that you'd think he would excel at playing, and our Gear Guru segments will talk about the overall raw sound of the band during this era, and touch up a little bit on channeling their influences during Porch. Red Rocks, Mansfield, Santa Barbara, The Gorge, Telluride... and now Amsterdam. These six shows have something special in common that no other Pearl Jam show can claim. The band walks out and takes a seat to start the show, warming up with a collection of slower tracks and easing into a set more than the typical night. In the beautiful, mountainous evening sky up in a ski resort town in Colorado, the band took their seats in a fantastic mood thanks to these surroundings and started the night with 10 tracks played acoustically.  All of the shows mentioned above have a few things in common. They've been to go to spot for the band to break out debuts, rarities or songs that went completely into hiding. Take Angel for example. A Dave Abbruzzese song that was released as an A-side on the 1994 fan club Xmas Singles that had only been played four prior times in their history. Not once since 1994. It took them a record setting 699 times in between shows before they'd play it again at this show! Also, for all of the Into The Wild fans, Society was debuted directly after Angel and it was one of two performances of it in their history. Later in the show, we'd receive another Xmas Single rarity from 2008, Santa Cruz, which lyrics were changed to fit their current location. A great show with lots of memorable speeches from Ed, and a cameo from a young woman standing stage side who wanted her 15 second of fame. Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. The band's lineup consists of founding members Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), as well as Matt Cameron (drums), who joined in 1998. Keyboardist Boom Gaspar has also been a touring/session member with the band since 2002. Drummers Jack Irons, Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, and Dave Abbruzzese are former members of the band. Pearl Jam outsold many of their contemporaries from the early 1990s, and are considered one of the most influential bands of the decade, being dubbed as "the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s".Formed after the demise of Gossard and Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years, and has gone on to become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13× platinum in the United States. Released in 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs., sold over 950,000 copies in its first week of release, setting the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week of release at the time. Their third album, Vitalogy (1994), became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week. It is no surprise that Pearl Jam was under intense pressure to follow up their debut album "Ten" with another success.  What may be surprising is that the band's second studio album, Vs. (pronounced "versus") did indeed live up to the success for their debut.  Vs. started at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, sold almost a million copies in its first five days, and in its first week outperformed all other albums in the top 10 combined.Pearl Jam did a number of things differently with this album.  First, they recorded the songs one at a time, setting up the band in a similar way to their live concerts, and mixing each song as they went.  Second, the songs created were more raw and powerful than those on their first album.  Front man Eddie Vedder even began sleeping in his truck and in the sauna at the recording studio to keep up the intensity.  Finally, the band deliberately did NOT make videos for any of the songs on this album, preferring to let the listeners visualize the songs rather than have that creativity removed by the presence of a video. This album also marks a change in the approach the band took to its tours, avoiding the press and focusing directly on the fans.  In addition to refusing to make videos, they dramatically scaled down television appearances, and capped the prices of their tickets to make their concerts more accessible to fans.Guest contributor Joe Davis brings us this outstanding album.   GoMany interpret this first single and lead-off track from the album to be about child abuse, though Eddie Vedder hinted that it was about his truck breaking down on him! AnimalThe opening lyrics "one, two, three, four, five against one" reflect the originally planned title of the album (Five Against One), and the idea that the five members of the band are up against the machine of the music industry.  The album would eventually be called "Vs." instead.Glorified G  Joe picked this song for the first two lines:  "Got a gun, fact I got two.  That's OK, man, 'cause I love God."  The lyrics come from an argument that Eddie Vedder had with drummer Dave Abbruzzese when Dave brought a gun he bought to rehearsal one day.  Dave was from Texas, where guns were more common, while Vedder hated guns.Rearviewmirror  Eddie Vedder wrote this song about his stepfather, whom he hated.  It was about leaving him behind without a second thought. This is a fast-paced song, and Joe recommends it for your running playlist. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the BBC television special "Mr. Blobby"The television Christmas special was on the charts in the UK in November 1993.  It was panned by critics and almost everyone else as it can be found as the WORST theme song ever...yet it topped the UK charts.   STAFF PICKS:Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.Brian begins the staff picks with a slower and positive song from the album “Automatic for the People.”  This track is an anti-suicide song, encouraging people to hold on when things go wrong, because everybody hurts sometimes.Into Your Arms by The LemonheadsRob brings us a hit off the album “Come On, Feel The Lemonheads.”  The band was originally from Boston, with Evan Dando on lead vocals and guitar, Ben Deily on vocals and guitar, and Jesse Peretz on bass.  This album was a follow-up to their hugely successful album ”It's a Shame About Ray.”Carry On by AngraBruce rocks out with a song off the Brazilian heavy metal band's debut album “Angels Cry.”  It encourages you to...well...carry on.  “So carry on, there' a meaning to life which someday we may find.  And carry on, it's time to forget the remains from the past, to carry on.”The Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana Joe finishes off the staff picks with Nirvana's MTV Unplugged  cover of the David Bowie song.  The song lyrics are about a man who is surprised to meet a personality of himself that he thought he had left behind years ago. COMEDY TRACK:Bohemian Polka by Weird Al YankovicWeird Al stays surprisingly faithful to the original lyrics, but with a polka twist on the music.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Peter Cornell over Zoom video!  Entrepreneur and singer-songwriter Peter Cornell (Inflatable Soule, Black Market Radio) has always had a passion for three of life's greatest treasures – family, music, and a really good cup of coffee. Now, Cornell has announced that he is combining all of these loves with the opening of the Cornell Brothers Coffee Espresso Bar in the heart of Historic Downtown Nolensville, TN, as well as the international launch of his premier line, Cornell Brothers Coffee: Small Batch Roasters and merchandise on June 1, 2021.According to Cornell, the company was named in memory of his late Grandfather and three uncles, all of whom were very influential in his life.Cornell Brothers Coffee Espresso Bar serves up multiple varieties of freshly-roasted espresso and coffee, which Cornell partnered with Nashville master roaster Lesa Wood to source and produce.Cornell's wife and business partner is veteran music industry executive Amy Decker, who located the espresso bar's premises inside Oh My Chives Natural Co-Op Market (7332 Nolensville Rd, Nolensville, TN), a popular co-op owned and operated by Angela Daly.“Oh My Chives is proud to be teaming up with Cornell Brothers Coffee,” said Daly. Available through www.cornellbrotherscoffee.com, coffee aficionados worldwide can purchase fresh-roasted Cornell varieties online. According to Cornell, “We roast each week and ship on Thursdays. If we don't have your order by Monday night, we will hold it until the following week so your product is of the highest quality we can provide.”Nolensville is the first place since Seattle that Cornell says truly feels like home, which is why he's excited to build a business and give back to his community in such a meaningful way. Before moving to TN, he spent the majority of his adult life crisscrossing the country performing in various musical projects, including his very first band Inflatable Soule, featuring his sisters Suzy (percussion/vocals) and Katy (flute/vocals), and managed by Susan Silver (Soundgarden, Alice in Chains). Before Cornell moved to New York City, the group released three albums and started Black Market Radio (BMR), with bassist Keith Mannino. Their 2006 album, Suicide Parlor, was hailed as “vibrant [and] blistering, with emotionally resonant tracks” (Last. FM). After that release, Cornell decided to take his career in a new direction and record a solo album entitled Champion with former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese on drums. Lauded by critics as an “instantly impactful and passionately powerful collection of songs” (Artist Direct), Cornell's solo effort saw commercial success with its single “Wash” appearing in the Vampire Diaries. Now, settled into TN life, Cornell has started writing and collaborating with other artists in addition to launching Cornell Brothers Coffee. His latest project was with multi-platinum rock band Candlebox. Cornell co-wrote the single “Let Me Down Easy” with frontman Kevin Martin for their forthcoming album Wolves (September 2021).We want to hear from you! 《Riot Act》比PEARL JAM 2000的专辑 《Binaural》在音乐形式上更加直接,平静圣洁的歌曲'Thumbing My Way'和Nick Cave的'The Boatman's Call'一样非常简洁,使它成为这张专辑的亮点。
