Welcome to tour week! Pearl Jam is back on the road hitting the southern United States as a follow up to their 2024 Dark Matter run. Like we always do for every tour, we'll be covering some of the locations that they'll visit as our episodes all month, starting with south Florida representation featuring a Fort Lauderdale show from 1996. Their history in Florida to that point had featured some very notable shows such as a Vote For Change show in Pensacola, one of the best quality bootlegs from St. Petersburg and a show from Miami that caused a riot. This No Code era show may not have had fans storming the gates, but it was a strong showing from the band in a unique venue for them. With the Ticketmaster boycott still in full effect, they opted to play at Fort Lauderdale Stadium, a soccer stadium meant to only seat 8,000 that crammed in 24,000 for this show. This was not a venue known for music, and we'll discuss a little of that in the episode. We'll talk a lot about some great performances of this era, and highlight some of the great moments featuring Jack Irons. We'll dig into excellent renditions of In My Tree, Corduroy, Porch, Immortality and spend a little time talking about how they did it all with Jack without the use of count-ins. It's time to hit the road! Check out this episode to get you prepped for everything tour wise, and find out more details on how you can listen to our instant reaction episodes that we'll release after every show! The 1995 tour included many firsts for Pearl Jam with a big one being the first time that the band ventured overseas to Southeast Asia and Oceania. This episode marks the first show where they played the legendary Tokyo venue Budokan. Any massive band that has traveled for a world tour has played this venue from names along the lines of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, with the most famous instance being Cheap Trick who released a live album recording from a performance there. When Vitalogy came out, Pearl Jam was one of the hottest bands in the world. The hype in Japan was massive as the crowd there was red hot witnessing the band at their height. We have a lot of fun performances to get to at this show, and there's no lack of discussion about what Jack Irons presence brought to the band during this time frame. Stay tuned for great topics such as a Corduroy solo with more drive, the rare 1995 alternate intro to Even Flow, an explosive Immortality, Satan's Bed at the best its ever been, why Go and Animal may be the best combination in the history of Pearl Jam and Ledbetter and Indifference getting the rare appearance at the same show. And we'll share a great story about a surprise when finding the Cheap Trick Live At Budokan record while digging through crates at a shop in Chicago. Jason and Paul welcome a titan of the Pearl Jam fan community to the show to discuss and celebrate the Voters for Choice concerts in Washington, D.C 30 years later. Kathy Davis started the Footsteps fanzine in 1992 and was co-editor/founder of fan website Two Feet Thick until its shuttering in 2013. She's been to nearly 200 shows and has stories for days. She discusses the significance of these two concerts which began a new chapter for the band amid a new dynamic with Dave Abbruzzesse's exit and Jack Irons entrance, plus Pearl Jam's ongoing fight for fair ticketing with Ticketmaster. The context for the shows is massive as well considering America's current abortion climate. Please consider donating to our January fundraiser HERE.Become a PatronWatch Us on YouTubeFollow Us on InstagramFollow Us on FacebookFollow Us on Twitter Hosted on Acast. There are plenty of milestone anniversaries in Pearl Jam history that we have to celebrate in 2025 - the 25th anniversary of the Binaural tour and the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Canadian leg come to mind, but one of the big anniversaries that we'll be digging into this year is the 30th anniversary of the legendary 1995 Vitalogy tour. This was a year of classic shows and moments from places like Red Rocks and Soldier Field, and in this episode we'll cover the show that kicks off a big year of touring - a Vote For Choice show in Washington DC. There are so many storylines that we have to cover in this one because of all the events that were happening in Pearl Jam's world at the time. There's the scarcity of tickets for this show where you had to send in a postcard to the Ten Club just to enter a lottery, Self Pollution Radio was broadcast a few days prior to this show happening that gave the audience a sneak peak as to how those Vitalogy songs that were all played on the Vs. tour were gonna sound polished up. This is considered to be the first show where Jack Irons is an official band member, and perhaps the biggest storyline is Neil Young's involvement and this stretch of shows ultimately leading to the recording of the Mirrorball record. This show will end with Neil joining the stage to play their first ever version of Act Of Love days after Neil played it with Crazy Horse at the Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame induction. We'll talk about how important that record was for the band and how Neil's influence has stuck with the group ever since. In today's episode we're joined by Brian Horwitz from the Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast, and we'll get to talking about the circulation of this bootleg and some of the other popular 1995 bootlegs, and we'll discuss what boots were must owns once everything digitized in the 2000s. Content Warning: This episode of Encore discusses struggles with addiction and mental health issues. Believe it or not, Red Hot Chili Peppers were formed all the way back in 1982 as ‘Tony Flow and The Majestic Masters of Mayhem' - no idea why that name didn't ever catch on. But, with all due respect to original members - the late great guitarist Hilel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons; the current lineup that we all know and love formed some six years later in the final months of 1988. Joining original members Tony Flow - aka Anthony Kiedis from here on out, and Flea - aka… well… Flea… were guitar genius John Frusciante, and the world's most successful Will Ferrell Look Alike - Chad Smith. Go on and picture the Red Hot Chili Peppers in your head; chances are it is this core four that you're thinking of… although there were at least another 8 transient members of RHCP throughout the years, with Frusciante especially coming-and-going throughout the band's history. With so much turmoil within a band - it's crazy to think that the Chili Peppers have never actually broken up, despite well documented addictions, tragedy and loss, lack of focus, changes in sound, and the aforementioned lineup changes over their 40+ years in Rock. So, for this episode of encore we're going to zoom in on perhaps their most successful pivot of all, becoming what felt like a brand new band all over again some 15+ years into their career - this is the story of Red Hot Chili Peppers' 2000 Hit - Californication with newly unearthed audio from the band themselves.
We're getting you prepped up for Pearl Jam's second North American leg of the Dark Matter tour by once again featuring shows in the locations that they'll be playing. First up is a hometown show for Mr. Jeff Ament as we cover the Missoula show from 1995. This is the beginning of the Vitalogy era and is the send off show before they embarked on a trip through the Pacific Rim. As always with this era, this show is all about Jack Irons leading the charge. His time in the band was still in its infancy, but you can see the direction that the band wanted to go with him. While the brand new Vitalogy songs were squarely in the forefront, it pushed aside songs from Ten that had been extremely popular only three years prior. There's only two songs from Ten in this show (feel free to include State Of Love And Trust from the time period) and the way those songs were attacked was in a way to trying something different to make them feel fresh. Porch was lifted from it's normal closing role to the fifth spot in the set that saw it's typically iconic live solo abridged, Even Flow experimented with a new intro and pieces of the song that strayed from the radio version, and SOLAT is a completely different monster that they did not continue moving forward with. This show also has killer versions of Spin The Black Circle, Immortality and one of three full versions of W.M.A. that Jack has played on. Also, we have a song that's a Live On 4 Legs first at this show! Javier's segment will focus on that incredibly insane version of W.M.A. and we invite one half of the Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast, Patrick Boegel, to break down the circulation of the bootleg tape from this show. Jack and his family move to an old farmhouse in the middle of the country, looking for a place to call their own. But they may not be the new owners after all. Thank you, Jack Irons, for sharing your story with Spooked! And thank you, Hady... for taking care of Jack. Produced by Erick Yañez, scouted by Elizabeth Pardue, original score by Nicholas Marks, artwork by Teo Ducot.
It's time for Pearl Jam to take the Dark Matter tour over to Europe! For the next month, we'll be doing the same thing as we did in May - focusing on past shows from locations they're about to embark on. First stop is Dublin, Ireland. It's been 14 years since the band has been back there, and strangely enough, they've only played there six times in total! This episode covers a show from Dublin in 1996 during the No Code tour that marks first of three appearances at The Point Theatre. This episode will lean heavily on the coverage of No Code tracks as we get in depth with Hail, Hail, In My Tree, Mankind and Who You Are. Of course with this being a Jack Irons show, he'll dominate much of the conversation. We'll dig into why some of the Ten songs may not have been his specialty as we touch up on tracks such as Release, Even Flow and Alive. We'll also spend some time preparing you for the upcoming tour leg and try our hand at coming up with some ideas that could end up being huge surprises this month! As the 2023 tour continues to move from north to south, we're gonna get you prepared for the Austin shows by covering the last non-festival show that was played in the Texas capital way back in 1995. This was a make-up show for the postponed date that stemmed from Ed's bout of food poisoning back at the Golden Gate Park show. This show in Austin had it's own fair share of controversies, including a set time change that threw a large portion of the fans off that thought that 7pm was the start to the show. This barnburner of a set will have two major talking points - Mike and Jack. Jack Irons was clearly in a groove after nine months of playing and traveling with the band, and while not every song had been fully polished just yet, you can see what spots Jack was having a major influence on and where he thrived the most. Mike on the other hand had numerous moments where his guitar solos shot out of the amps like a cannon on fire. We're gonna gush over Mike's presence on songs such as Go, Animal, Corduroy, Why Go, Even Flow, State Of Love And Trust, Immortality, Black and Porch. No shortage of conversation there! We'll kick off the episode addressing the recent Indianapolis show postponement and what this may mean for the rest of the 2023 tour. Go inside the mind of Jamie Fishback as he deciphers the layered persona of his character Detective Schumann. While creating the role of a protective father figure to Jack Irons' as her boss, Jamie portrays a man grappling with a fast-evolving world while relying on his razor-sharp instincts. Join us for a compelling look into the mind of a traditionalist navigating a cyberpunk future.
In this engaging interview, Chelsea Spirito shares her performance-building approach that brought to life our show's protagonist NYC detective "Jack Irons” and how she navigated a futuristic world filled with conflicts between humans and Numans. Chelsea brings her authenticity to the role ensuring that this character stands as a rare beacon of positive LGBTQ+ representation in the sci-fi genre.

Rana Fonk y Saturnino responden preguntas que realizó la comunidad de fans de los Peppers y hacen por primera vez este programa juntos desde España.
Let's begin our Yield tour celebration by going back and covering the 25th anniversary of their two night stint in Maui. A destination show for Pearl Jam in a 5,000 person venue to kick off a strong slate of shows for 1998. Hawaii is a place that would gain importance over time as it became a second home for Eddie, and his friendship connections would later lead to him and Boom Gaspar meeting. This time period would also become known as the beginning of the end for Jack Irons as he would leave the band following the ensuing Australian tour leg. As we've discussed in the past three episodes, we'll once again have the chance to talk about some of the earliest performances of Yield album tracks. Songs like Given To Fly, Faithfull and MFC provided a punch and make an impact, while a song like Wishlist is still finding its way. This show features 21 songs in a shortened 90 minute set thanks to an early curfew, but the band leans heavily on No Code and the new songs while Vs. and Ten tracks are fairly limited. We'll discuss the fourth of fourteen performances of Around The Bend during this episode! If you like surprises, I think you'll be satisfied once the episode gets to about the 50 minute mark! No spoilers, but you'll enjoy this! Also, we'll have our Gear Guru Javier back to discuss Stone's wah wah pedal on Do The Evolution, and we'll answer the question of the week - what is your dream destination vacation spot that you'd like to see the band do a residency in? To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Yield, we're taking a stroll down memory lane to take a look into the album's great impact that it's had on fans for the last quarter decade. We'll discuss how the album has impacted us personally, what it meant for Pearl Jam during that time period, how the absence of Jack Irons impacted the chances that some of these songs had to get played live and the master studio production work led by the best in the game, Brendan O'Brien. This week we celebrate our 20th installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of an awesome boogie metal / southern rock n' punk band from the grimy & gritty NYC Lower East Side of the 1980s: RAGING SLAB! This band featured equal parts Skynyrd and Metallica complete with a kick-ass bottleneck slide lead guitar. Touring with a cross-section of bands like Chili Peppers, Ramones, Molly Hatchet, GnR, and Warrant while boasting a southern rock stomp pre-dating The Black Crowes; we think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we featured on the show earlier this year during our exploration of Genres From The Netherworld (Ep. 137). Robert enjoyed them so much, he asked that they be revisited at some point. Unfortunately, their amazing brand of boogie metal was never recognized to the degree that it deserved; partly due to a series of unfortunate incidences and pure bad luck. Songs this week include:Raging Slab – “Mr. Lucky” from Assmaster (1987)Raging Slab – “Get Off My Jollies” from True Death (1988)Raging Slab – “Bent For Silver” from Raging Slab (1989)Raging Slab – “Lord Have Mercy” from Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert (1993)Raging Slab - “C'mon N' On” from Sing Monkey Sing (1996)Raging Slab – “Sir Lord Ford…” from The Dealer (2001)Raging Slab – “Ruby” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)Raging Slab – “Bury Me Deep” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

We go back in time to the beginning of the second leg of 1998 in this episode covering the first show out of Noblesville, Indiana. The first leg of the North American run had it's ups and downs and learning curves seeing as it was the first tour that Matt Cameron took over at the kit. Which meant that Matt had to learn over 60 songs in an extremely short amount of time in order to make this work. Having a month to rest and refocus in between legs, there is a renewed energy at the start of this leg. We'll talk about how Matt was able to find his organic style and how it was interpreted into Pearl Jam songs different from Jack Irons. We'll also talk about good versions of Immortality, Brain of J, Wishlist, Alive, and a mention of the Bill Clinton scandal that was all over the news in 1998. Yield is Pearl Jam's masterpiece. Is that opinion or fact? Roche and Billie Jean make their case for why it's a fact in the latest episode of Jamily Matters. It's the album that they've been most excited and most nervous to rank because it is unquestionably their favorite. After waxing poetic about this amazing work of art, they begin the difficult task of ranking the songs of Yield. And not without controversy as Billie Jean risks her friendship with Roche by ranking his favorite all time PJ song lower on her Yield list. BONUS: Billie tells of well known drummer who auditioned for Pearl Jam but lost out to Jack Irons.
In this episode, we venture into a part of the country we have yet to touch - Salt Lake City, Utah! As the band's Ticketmaster boycott prevented them from playing marquee venues in 1995, they often found themselves in challenging scenarios playing shows in obscure places. While the capital of the 45th state may not be totally obscure, it's strange to look back and say they did a two night run in Salt Lake City. But there's a reason for that. During June of the original tour run, they had to postpone their show slated to take place at the original outdoor amphitheater in SLC due to weather concerns. The band would say they'd return and play twice as many songs, which led to this excellent November stretch packed with five memorable shows. The Utah shows are seen for being somewhat of a gateway from the Vitalogy era into No Code. During the first night, they'd debut Red Mosquito, and at this show, Brain Of J. would make it's live debut. We get a chance to look into the changes made in the song and decipher why this was held back and re-recorded for Yield in it's form most common to us. We'll also get a ton of Vitalogy era Jack Irons infused jam sessions to talk about, including extended versions of Not For You, Corduroy and Immortality. Two A**holes in a Pod. Kayley interviews narrator Connor Crais, laughs nonstop, and makes him very uncomfortable when she says nice things about him. After the interview, Connor narrates an exclusive bonus Jack Irons scene that Kayley wrote for this podcast, as well as a little proof that he really can make anything sound hot. At the end of this episode, Emma Wilder and Teddy Hamilton answer listeners' questions!
