This episode jumps into a tour year that we don't often talk about on the pod - the final year of the Backspacer tour in 2012. This year featured 13 shows over in Europe and a few additional festival shows in the US, and for this one we'll cover the show that kicked off the entire year in Manchester, UK. No, it's probably not the Manchester show that you'd think. We're not covering the show that features the one and only performance of Hitchhiker. But there are plenty of things about this show worthy of conversation, performance wise and storyline wise. In Pearl Jam's history, there's been somewhat of a stigma that surrounds two different types of shows - tour openers and night ones. This show happens to be both. The stigma about tour openers is that they can tend to come off a little bit flat, there's a concern over the equipment sounding the way it needs to sound and the fact that there is usually a somewhat significant time frame since the last performance. Night ones can sometimes have a very similar reputation as well, as many people consider night two as the show where they'll bust out rarities and surprises. We'll take a chunk of time at the beginning of the episode talking about how the band has essentially worked on erasing these stigmas within the last few tour years, with the band pulling out very solid tour opening shows as well as some night one shows that were far better than their night two counterparts. And yes, getting into the performances too! We'll spend time talking about how and why Stone overpowered McCready on the big time songs at this show such as Even Flow and Porch, and get into a short take on a great song from a hometown Manchester band that has relevance in the Pearl Jam canon. Pearl Jam's short Australia/New Zealand is underway, and the next stop on the map is Melbourne! It's a city that has a very rich history with this band featuring countless of classic shows from the early 90's. Due to special Patreon request, this week we are covering the 2009 show. It's a different setlist than what we covered from Auckland last week, but we'll dig into more Backspacer deep cuts, crowd friendly moments and Ben Harper collaborations. Some of you may know Javier's frustration with 2009 from a sound perspective, how they were using tube amps that did not aid some of the intricacies that Stone and Mike add to specific songs when they play. We'll have a good long discussion on how all of that works from both the technical and non-technical POVs, and present examples of songs it benefits and others that it doesn't. We have some great moments in this set to get into including Indifference and Red Mosquito with Ben Harper, Throw Your Arms Around Me with Liam Finn and a version of Porch that unleashes the best of Stone Gossard. Pearl Jam goes back on the road this week, and for the first time in ten years, they are making stops in Australia and New Zealand! The run will begin in Auckland, which is where our episode this week took place in on the 2009 Backspacer tour. Thanks to our Kiwi friend, Chris Warne, for putting in this episode request through our Patreon. He'll have info on some fun stuff going down at the shows, including the post-game reaction spots. This show offers a very unique OTOTO performance that you'll only get when touring the country. With the help of Neil and Liam Finn, there's an excellent performance of a song called Not Given Lightly by local legend, Chris Knox. We'll spend good time on this rarity that you may not have heard before. Other big highlights include one of the best versions of Severed Hand you'll ever hear, an amazing version of Faithfull, the uber rare Hold On played for only the second time, a fired up main set closing with Better Man and Red Mosquito featuring Ben Harper on slide guitar. All that, and we prepare for the upcoming tour starting this weekend! With the new tour firing up this week in Montana, on Monday Pearl Jam will be heading to Indianapolis to take care of some unfinished business. Last year was set to be the band's first appearance in the city in 13 years until illness took over and caused a postponement. As they make good on their promise to return, this episode covers the last instance where they visited Indiana's capital back in 2010. We'll get you hyped up for the return of the tour and answer some of the questions that you guys posed to us via social media! With a new show on the horizon, is it fair to say that Indianapolis doesn't have a Pearl Jam show that's considered an all-timer? While neighboring places like Detroit, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Milwaukee have all laid claim to have hosted shows that people hold in very high regard, this year may be Indianapolis's year. 2010 is not by any means a bad show, but does it stand out among a very good slate from that US run that year? With the conditions not going the way of a typical concert, marred with a 90 minute delay due to thunderstorms, the band came out and played a very efficient set that took two hours and ten minutes to play an impressive 29 songs. Most of these songs are of the shorter, pop-rock variety to keep the mood of what may have been an anxious crowd after a rain delay lighthearted and fun. The positive outlook of the Backspacer era tunes helped that cause with songs like Unthought Known and Supersonic flourishing in this spotlight. We'll spend our time talking about some big moments that include a fantastic rendition of Off He Goes, Force Of Nature, Wishlist and a nod to hometown heroes, the Jackson 5. It's Olympics week, and since we've been following heavily on some of Pearl Jam's past European shows lately, why not add one more into the fold to keep the theme alive? This show from Vienna is like running a marathon as the band treats us to nearly 3 hours of an excellent 35-song set. Everything was on the table here as they dipped into songs from nearly every album, including many of the check list songs for all of the serious collectors. The theme for this show? Less talk, more rock. The band wasted no time at the beginning of the show going on a run of eight straight songs to start the show. This was not necessarily a night for chatting, it was a night for amazing bass grooves and solos ala Gossard. We'll talk about how great they both sound at this one and highlight songs such as Hail, Hail and Brain Of J where they both thrived. But the rarities also dominate the night as it's the last time to date that they've played Can't Keep, Rats and the deep Backspacer cut Speed Of Sound is also featured at this show. We also hear some rare covers involved including Rain, Public Image and Needle And The Damage Done. We'll also get into a deep conversation about how meaningful encore 2 sets are outside of creating the party atmosphere to close your night. We are less than a month away from seeing Pearl Jam take the stage for nine shows in September, and there's possibly no bigger stage than the one set for Ed's hometown of Chicago. As Wrigley Field has dominated the tour runs for the last ten years, the band is finally returning to the United Center for the first time since 2009, which is the show we'll be digging into in this episode. It was right before the Backspacer record came out, and while not every song had been released yet, it was somewhat of a showcase for songs such as The Fixer, Got Some and Supersonic. With Randy in attendance for the night two of this back to back, he gives some insight as to what was going on this weekend and some of the buzz coming out of night one. As all Chicago shows are, this is a true homecoming for Ed where he will reference fond memories of his youth on multiple occasions. He ties it in nicely when classic Who songs Love Reign O'er Me and The Real Me are played due to spending lots of cold nights listening to them on his walkman waiting for the L train. He'll also tie in a story about some of his earliest loves of music coming in the form of listening to Motown and idolizing Michael Jackson, who had died that summer. There is a nice dedication to Michael during Ed's rendition of Needle and the Damage Done, and a version of Rats featuring a short intro tease of the Michael Jackson song that's referenced at the end, Ben. And of course, he'll give nod to the Bulls championship banners in the rafters. As Ed would deem this show to be an emotional ride from the very beginning, we'll get to hear those kind of songs such as Long Road, Come Back and Man Of The Hour utilized in this set. Many thanks to Patron Andy Lore who requested this show! Our Gear Guru segments this week will get into a buzzy Mike solo on Sad, how Given To Fly and other songs guitar tone on this tour felt flat, and how Stone's rigged strumming was the backbone for a fantastic version of Love Reign O'er Me. In this two part episode, we take six incredibly passionate fans of the band and see how they agree and disagree on their favorite songs. The way we do that is by playing a game called Deprogrammed, a podcast that collaboratively comes up with a starter kit for an artist. In this instance, we will be deciding on the Top 10 songs in Pearl Jam's catalog until we get down to selecting the song chosen as number one with a bullet. Since this is an expanded version of the podcast, we've taken songs from each of Pearl Jam's albums and grouped them together. There are 4 groups, each group contains 42-44 songs. From that selection, every member of the panel will pick their 15 favorites with the ultimate goal of creating a Top 10 in each group. If all 6 agree unanimously on a song, it automatically reaches the top 10 of its group. Anywhere from 5-3 votes will put a song in the conversation to advance to the top 10 and 2 or less votes will prevent a song from entering that conversation. Here are the album groups that we will be debating on: Group 1: Ten, Riot Act, Gigaton, Merkin Ball, 4 Lost Dog disc 1 tracks Group 2: Vs., Binaural, Avocado, Singles Soundtrack, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Group 3: Vitalogy, Lost Dogs disc 2, Backspacer, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Group 4: No Code, Yield, Lightning Bolt, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Stay tuned for the next episode where we'll take the 40 selected in this show and whittle it down to the final ten! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deprogrammedva/message

When you think of 2009, immediately the first thing that comes to everyone's minds is those four Philadelphia shows that closed down The Spectrum. But people may forget that this wasn't the only four-night stint that they had in one building during this tour year. The 6,000+ capacity Gibson Amphitheatre located in Universal Studios in Los Angeles also played host to four Pearl Jam shows. Not four in a row like Philly, but the shows invited a bit more of an intimate experience. We'll talk about the two sets of shows and how one dominates the conversation over the other, but we'll also address a misconception that people seem to have due to how The Spectrum shows went down. We thank our Patron, Jason Weiss, for selecting this show as his episode request, and we'll share his story here. This is a Backspacer era tour, which meant that eight of the eleven songs were played. Coming off the heels of our contentious takes on Ole, we'll go off on another contentious song this week in Johnny Guitar, which has been known to be a bit divisive as well. If you join us for the Johnny talk, then you gotta stay for the conversations on Rearviewmirror, Alive, Red Mosquito featuring Ben Harper on a flat top steel guitar, and a spontaneous Lukin which included a string quartet accompanyment. We'll read you Question of the Week answers where we asked about what Backspacer songs that you'd like to see come back on the 2023 tour, and the Gear Guru segments will focus on Amongst The Waves, Red Mosquito and McCready's electric Star-Spangled Banner.  Visit The Concertpedia - http://liveon4legs.com Now including a 7-day Free Trial for new donors! Most shows that go down as some of the greatest in Pearl Jam's history are usually remembered for having an excellent crowd feeding off their energy. There are some shows that may not get discussed as often due to a crowd not living up to expectations. Bristow, VA 2010 fits into that latter category. On a cold night in an outdoor amphitheater just outside of Washington DC, the band had a challenge at hand when difficulties connecting with the crowd let to a few rough performances. As professionals, they kept pushing and pushing, and the crowd slowly but surely started to give them the reaction they desired. It was all good in the end, but this week's episode talks about some of the struggles that this show presented. Right off the top of the show we'll run our interview with the host of The Better Band Podcast, Branden Palomo. After four years, his podcast that features a song-by-song run through of every Pearl Jam track will be going on hiatus. We bring him on to thank him for his work and get a little introspective on how his time with his show gave him a new outlook on this community. Our question of the week stems from the theme of the episode. We read your answers on whether or not you've ever been to a Pearl Jam show where the band and crowd had a difficult time connecting. In our Gear Guru segment this week, Javier discusses the change in set-up for the Backspacer tour, including how shows from this era sound way more condensed than they did in the past. After a memorable show in Krakow on the 2022 European tour, we're set to go back to Poland to cover the Heineken Open'er Festival show from 2010. The show was a day after the Berlin show from that year, which had a touching tribute to the Roskilde victims being the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. That theme was on their minds at this show as Ed has to deal with some early crowd rambunctiousness that he had nearly no patience for. This was in the middle of touring for Backspacer, so we'll be able to catch up on songs from that album for the first time in about 6 months. This is including The Fixer, where we try to make sense of the recent infatuation that blew us away after it was crossed off a setlist earlier in this tour. Great versions of Hail, Hail, Even Flow, Amongst The Waves and Rearviewmirror are all discussed, but perhaps most importantly, we get a version of Just Breathe with bass!  Joining us to tell her story is our Patron Anita Stelmasiuk who had a long journey before making it to her first show. We're heading back to an era that has gone nearly untouched in the Live On 4 Legs pantheon. In 2009, the Backspacer album was released and subsequently toured for. Although somewhat polarizing in retrospect, people thought highly of the album at the time and considered it to be Pearl Jam's return to their "true rock 'n roll roots". Yet of the eleven tracks the album bares, the band rarely goes back to many of those songs that were getting attention then. As a podcast, these songs have seen minimal coverage possibly thanks to that. This episode will continue the Seattle hometown series featuring a show that was considered to be the Backspacer era's maiden voyage taking place only a day after the record was released. As mentioned, a lot of music critics and journalists hopped back aboard the Pearl Jam bandwagon when this album came out. Was it due to the album being exclusively released at a big box store like Target? Or could it possibly have been because the George W. Bush administration was out of office and the album seeing a fresh, positive outlook for the first time since Yield? Whatever the case was, the band was clearly feeling good about their recent production, continuously pushing songs such as Got Some and The Fixer along with the family oriented love song Just Breathe. But this era also hosts a few of those songs that have absolutely disappeared from the Pearl Jam live repertoire such as lead-off track Gonna See My Friend, Johnny Guitar and Ed solo track The End which we'll cover the debuts for in this episode. But this era also led the way for a few classics that we continue to hear today such as the aforementioned Just Breathe and Unthought Known. Since we are coming off a month where Gigaton songs were finally played for the first time in 18 months, we'll make some comparisons to how these new songs fit in with the setlist to how the Backspacer songs ended up. Seven O'Clock is seemingly on the projection of an Unthought Known made to be a nightly hit, but what songs can we compare Retrograde and River Cross to? All of that, plus a few good personal stories mixed in for this one. Check out the LO4L Concertpedia at http://liveon4legs.com Donate to the show at http://patreon.com/liveon4legs

Batting second in our Murderer's Row lineup is this tremendous show out of Boston from 2010. Shows in the Boston or Massachusetts area are usually notable in this band's lineage, but what made this stop on the Backspacer tour important was the myriad of rarities they brought to the table that night. With every album accounted for, the band dug deep into their catalog to pull out songs that some may have thought they'd never play again. And some they haven't! 2008 was an interesting year for Pearl Jam. Touring in between their Self-Titled and Backspacer releases, they were given the flexibility to experiment in their setlists moreso then they had in the past. On the 13-show east coast tour, there were songs that had been almost unfathomable to hear at a Pearl Jam show prior. Who You Are, All Night, a full version of W.M.A. and a solidified set opening role for Hard To Imagine are just some of the exciting additions brought into the fold in 2008. At the Washington DC show that we'll cover in this episode, we get to hear some of those unique additions as well as a few twists and turns that made this setlist memorable. We're all familiar with the "man" trilogy where the songs Nothingman, Leatherman and Better Man are played in sequence, that's a frequent enough occurrence in setlists. The band pulled out not one, but TWO new trilogy series combining songs with the word "I" and the word "you". These are fun inclusions that you'll never see in a setlist outside of this unpredictable 2008 tour. As mentioned above, one of the songs that made a huge impact in 2008 was Hard To Imagine. After using it as an opener once in Halifax on the 2005 tour, they hadn't gone back to it in the role since then. But the song would be played five times in 2008, all as the opener, solidifying its place among the pantheon of special opening songs. We'll give this song a special treatment providing as a preview for our recent Evolution episode where we covered it. Here are the album groups that we will be debating on: Group 1: Ten, Riot Act, Gigaton, Merkin Ball, 4 Lost Dog disc 1 tracks Group 2: Vs., Binaural, Avocado, Singles Soundtrack, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Group 3: Vitalogy, Lost Dogs disc 2, Backspacer, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Group 4: No Code, Yield, Lightning Bolt, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Stay tuned for the next episode where we'll take the 40 selected in this show and whittle it down to the final ten! http://patreon.com/liveon4legs

《Riot Act》比PEARL JAM 2000的专辑 《Binaural》在音乐形式上更加直接,平静圣洁的歌曲'Thumbing My Way'和Nick Cave的'The Boatman's Call'一样非常简洁,使它成为这张专辑的亮点。
