Bad Company hit the scene in 1974 in a big way. Signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label and managed by Peter Grant, the supergroup composed of Paul Rodgers (Free), Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople), Boz Burrell (King Crimson) and Simon Kirke (Free) had a huge success with their self-titled debut which would go on to sell 5 million in the US. Many bands struggle to follow up a big debut with an equally good second effort but Bad Company weren't rookies and had made over a dozen albums individually. The question was how would the songwriting partnership of Ralphs and Rodgers develop and would any of them as individuals emerge as the lead songwriter. While not many will tell you Straight Shooter is as good or better than the debut, it is a solid rock record. Chart hits Feel Like Makin' Love and Good Lovin' Gone Bad got them all over the airwaves and Rodgers Shooting Star would go onto become a classic rock radio staple. They even showed their tender side with Simon Kirke's Weep No More (accompanied by strings) and Anna. Heavy riffs from Deal With The Preacher and the innuendo of Wild Fire Woman help round the album into an album that showed Bad Company had staying power and could deliver the goods. Released March 28, 1975, it would go on to sell 3 million in the US. Do you think Bad Company deserves to be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame? We do!!! ** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** It's the world premiere episode of Where'd You Get Your Funk From! Featured in WYGYFF Episode 1: Legendary bassist and leader of one of the most successful funk, R&B and pop bands of all time – Robert "Kool" Bell of Kool & the Gang! He is the last original surviving member of a band that was founded 55 years ago – notching 25 Top 10 R&B hits, 31 gold & platinum-selling albums and 7 Grammy Awards along the way – and recorded classics like “Jungle Boogie,” “Hollywood Swinging,” “Funky Stuff,” “Summer Madness,” “Spirit of the Boogie,” “Open Sesame,” “Ladies Night,” “Celebration,” “Too Hot,” “Get Down on It” and dozens more. This year, Kool and the Gang is FINALLY being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.  RECORDED SEPTEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Ever wondered what Foreigner's biggest hit was? Or why they were called Foreigner in the first place? Maybe you'd like to know if there are any original members left and what happened to their lead singer? Did you see the band finally being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame? All of these questions and more answered this week as Foreigner co-founder Al Greenwood joins us for a chat. Al is best known as the keyboardist of the iconic rock band Foreigner, formed in 1976 alongside Mick Jones, Lou Gramm, Ian McDonald, Ed Gagliardi, and Dennis Elliott. His classical training and experience in jazz and progressive rock were essential in crafting the band's sound, which blended hard rock with sophisticated keyboard arrangements. During his time with Foreigner, Al contributed to the band's first three multi-platinum albums: "Foreigner" (1977), "Double Vision" (1978), and "Head Games" (1979). He co-wrote several of the band's hit songs, including the classic tracks "Cold As Ice" and "Blue Morning, Blue Day." After parting ways with Foreigner in 1980, Al didn't step away from the music scene. He went on to co-found the band Spys in 1981, a group known for their blend of rock, pop, and new wave influences. With Spys, Al continued to showcase his skills as a songwriter and keyboardist, releasing two albums that received critical acclaim for their innovative sound. Beyond his work with that band, he became a sought-after session musician, arranger, and producer, contributing to various artists across different genres. Al's work in the music industry also expanded into composing for film and television, where his versatility allowed him to create scores that resonated with a wide audience. His legacy with Foreigner, combined with his later projects, has cemented his reputation as a pioneering figure in rock music, particularly in integrating synthesizers into the genre. Today he plays with the 'new' Foreigner with singer Kelly Hansen out front. He says they're an act to behold. Al also tells us that the biggest thrill of his life has been the original band's induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame very recently and although it's long overdue, he's incredibly proud to have finally been recognised for the contribution that Foreigner made to the rock sound of the '70s. I hope you'll enjoy my chat with Al as he unravels much abut one of our best loved band's history.

Guitarist and songwriter Nancy Wilson is one half of the rock band Heart, along with her older sister Ann Wilson. Nancy and Ann have been the face of the band since the mid-70s. Heart's first album, Dreamboat Annie, was released in 1976 right as the band was making traction opening for big acts like Rod Stewart and The Bee Gees. Soon their songs, like “Magic Man” and “Crazy On You,” started to take off in the States, and Heart quickly became a headlining act. Nearly 50 years since their debut album, Heart has experienced career highs—like a string of chart-topping hits and an induction into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame—as well as their fair share of personal and professional adversity. Today Ann and Nancy remain steadfast in continuing Heart's legacy. This month they embarked on a world tour—their first in five years. To celebrate Ann and Nancy Wilson's massive contribution to rock n roll history, we will feature conversations with both sisters over the next two weeks. Today we'll hear Leah Rose talk to Nancy about how the popular drugs of the ‘70s and ‘80s influenced Heart's sound. She also describes how being accepted by the musicians of Seattle's grunge scene helped her overcome Heart's fraught experience recording power ballads in the ‘80s. And she describes the lo-fi setup she used to score the soundtracks of her ex-husband Cameron Crowe's hit movies: Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, and Jerry McGuire. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

In the minds of many rock fans, Duff McKagan will forever be known first and foremost as the bassist for Guns N' Roses. The band's white-hot reign in the late '80s through the early '90s is the stuff of hedonistic, hard rock legend. And for anyone interested in reading a detailed account of that wild ride, check out Duff's memoir, “It's So Easy and Other Lies.” After turning 30, Duff got sober, eventually left GNR, and then went on to play stints in Alice In Chains and Jane's Addiction—and he helped form the supergroup, Velvet Revolver. In 2016, he rejoined Guns N' Roses following their induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Outside of his contributions to big name rock bands, Duff has also been releasing solo material since the early '90s. His latest album, Lighthouse, signals a new musical direction for Duff—one that focuses on reflective, personal lyrics and stripped-down rootsy-rock. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Duff McKagan about his decision to leave the heroin-infested punk rock scene in his hometown of Seattle for LA. He also shares stories about Axl Rose and Slash while recording Appetite For Destruction. And he reminisces about the time his musical idol Prince was trying to get Duff to reveal the real reason why Guns N' Roses broke up. Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist and songwriter for The Who, is one of the most decorated rock stars alive. He's been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, received Kennedy Center Honors, and lifetime-achievement awards from both the Brit Awards and the Grammys. Pete's iconic power chord-guitar style and early use of synthesizers established him as a musical innovator in the '60s and '70s. After a string of chart-topping singles in the early '60s, Pete set to work writing the first-ever rock opera, a project that became the double album Tommy. Tommy is widely recognized as The Who's breakout record, and is considered a masterpiece by many critics. Following its release, Pete started writing songs and a script for a sci-fi epic called Life House. After that project was scrapped, the songs wound up on different releases from the band over the next decade including their 1971 classic, Who's Next. Last month The Who released an epic box set called Who's Next/Life House that contains 155 tracks, 89 of which are unreleased. The set also includes a graphic novel, unheard demos, complete live concerts, posters and collectable pins. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Pete Townshend about how some of the ill-fated effects of technology that he predicted on Life House have come to pass. Pete also explains why he decided to target a specifically male audience when writing music for The Who. And he gives an unexpected take on the Grateful Dead and San Francisco's music scene in the '60s.
