Dave Swift may not be a household name but he's shared the stage with legendary musicians such as Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Cher, Joss Stone, Eric Clapton, Roger Daughtry, Paul Simon ... and those are just a few. He's been a member of Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 1991 and also a with the house band on Later with Jools Holland (one of the top tv shows in the UK) He's been called by Bass Guitar magazine as "one of UK's top bassists" We had a great conversation with Dave and probably one of our longest interviews. We covered a lot of ground from Dave's early beginnings learning his first instrument (not the bass) to auditioning for Jools Holland and recently recording with Rod Stewart for his upcoming album. There's a lot in between and some great stories from Dave about some legendary musicians he's worked with. Like the time they needed a guitar player to fill in (for the house guitarist) when Smokey Robinson was set to do a live show... you won't beleive who they got to fill in. We thank Dave for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us. He's currently on tour and also in rehearsals for the tv show so he's got a lot going on. Dave was such a pleasure to talk to and you'll hear it in his voice how serious he is about what he does and the love for his art of making music. At the end of the interview we did ask some "non-music" questions and when we got into food you would not believe it but we ended up talking about cheeses (like our last interview).. this may be a new thing .. or not .. ************ A little about Dave Swift: Since joining Jools Holland and His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra in 1991, Dave Swift has established himself as one of the UK's finest, high-profile bass players. In his career, which expands beyond three decades, Dave boasts a musician's portfolio that seconds no other. Dave Swift has played for an array of renowned artists, from George Benson, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton to Amy Winehouse, Adele and Paul Simon. Over the years he has performed at many prestigious events, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Dubai International Jazz Festival, Blue Note Tokyo, Amnesty International, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Glastonbury Music Festival, and a G8 Conference for world leaders, which included former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and President Bill Clinton. Additional performances include the Millennium Night celebration at the Millennium Dome for Her Majesty the Queen and a sell-out concert at the Sydney Opera House during their 2008 tour of Australia and New Zealand. Dave Swift is currently on a UK tour with the Jools Holland Band throughout this month and December. Joss Stone will join them on some dates along with Rod Stewart (who will show up for some shows as a surprise guest) *********** You can find Dave on Instagram and be sure to check out his website at : daveswiftbass.com KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. During the pandemic, we were all forced to go on Zoom and many of us were noticing imperfections that we had never seen before. Five world-class bassists and returning guests: Ron Carter (Miles Davis), Larry Grenadier (Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny), Gary Karr, Dave Swift (Later...with Jools Holland), and Benny Rietveld (Santana, Miles Davis, Sheila E.) join hosts/bassists David C. Dave Swift, Bass Man with the Jools Holland Big Band In 1991 Dave Swift heard that Jools Holland, ex-Squeeze keyboardist and TV presenter, was searching for a bassist who played both double bass and bass guitar. With the renowned bassist Pino Palladino then holding the “bass chair” in Holland's band, this was a bold move on the young bassist's part. The advantage from Swift's position was that he also played double bass and was already skilled in sight-reading. Swift auditioned, was hired on the spot, and has been Holland's bassist ever since. Thanks to his talent and growing popularity, Swift is often invited at shows and camps. Recently, Swift was invited to appear at the annual Warwick Bass Camp in Germany in 2016 as a VIP guest, along with numerous popular bass luminaries from all over the world. The 2016 Warwick Bass Camp was held in Markeneukirchen, Germany, and had a roster of outstanding bassists. Attending professors included Alphonso Johnson, Felix Pastorius, Anthony Wellington and Steve Bailey. Swift was also a guest lecturer at the March 2016 Bass Guitar Show at Earls Court Olympia that filled the room to capacity. Dave Swift is still an in-demand session musician outside of Holland's band and has also played double bass for American soul singer Gary U.S. Bonds, Ben E. King and on ex-Kinks frontman Ray Davies's album, Other People's Lives. Renowned skateboard photographer and magazine editor Dave Swift joins the show to talk about his long history with skateboarding, the early days of the Del Mar Skate Ranch, his many years as editor in chief of Transworld Skateboarding, and cofounding the Skateboard Mag. Although Dave grew up a short drive from the beaches of San Diego, his small town felt more like a ranching community and his days were filled with baseball and football until the age of 13 when skateboarding entered his life and changed his whole outlook on the future. He quickly fell in love with not only the act of skating, but the culture that surrounded it and before long became a local fixture at the infamous Del Mar Skate Ranch. After years of trying to make it as a professional, and a stint as a sponsored skater for Schmitt Stix, he lucked into a position writing and editing for Transworld magazine. It was there that he would he begin to experiment more with photography and, under the mentorship of people like Grant Brittain, start to hone his craft. He slowly moved through the ranks of the magazine and before long became the editor in chief, all the while continuing to photograph the scene around him. Although Dave experienced a couple of the slowest years of Skateboarding's history, he also experienced the boom, and in the late 90s and early 2000s, as street skateboarding helped propel the sport back into the spotlight, Dave was there to witness all of it and finally decided to go out with some others and create their own publication. After 30 years in the industry, Dave continues to love it all, to keep shooting, and most impressive of all to keep skating. During our conversation we talk about how he feels about social media vs editorial content, the regrets he has of not traveling more in his younger years, what the future of magazines might look like, and the advice he gives to those coming up in this world. https://leanmusician.com For the last three decades, Dave has been the main bass man for Jools Holland. In this interview we hear about how Dave started out, we hear about his journey to becoming a well rounded musician, his early years with Jools, all the experiences with the band & we talk a load about education. Above all, there’s one quote or message that I took away from the podcast & it’s directly hinted at the excerpt at the beginning of the podcast. Often the study of music - whether through education or not - can all too easily become an academic affair - in other words, our effort to study and intellectualise music can actually work against us. In this brilliant interview, Dave reminds us how important it is to “go to the source” with music - in other words, don’t study things around music, or books etc… but listen, transcribe, assimilate - and then go do your own thing. It’s amazing and deceptively simple advice.
This week we sat down with Skateboarding Photographer Dave Swift. We talked about his years working at Transworld, leaving Transworld to help start the Skateboard Mag, shooting Heath Kirchart's lip slide down El Toro, the transition from magazines to online media, and much more! "What else do you do?" said the neurologist to Scott Devine. "Because you'll never play bass again." How would you feel after hearing that news? What would you do? Scott was making his living as a gigging bassist when he began having problems with his hands. These problems grew progressively worse, prompting Scott to seek medical advice. The diagnosis was focal dystonia, a neurological condition that affects a muscle or group of muscles in a specific part of the body, causing involuntary muscular contractions and abnormal postures. Doctors told Scott that playing bass would not be an option for him anymore. Fast-forward many years, and Scott is now making his living teaching electric bass (and yes, playing it!) to thousands of people world-wide. How in the world did Scott overcome this? We dig into this and much more in today's episode! As the bassist for Jools Holland's band for over two decades, Dave Swift is likely the U.K.'s best-known bassist. He has performed with an astonishing array of artists, including: Paul Simon Eric Clapton Paul McCartney Chaka Kahn Smokey Robinson The list goes on and on! He and I got a chance to sit down over Skype earlier this fall and dig into all sorts of fascinating topics like: how Dave transcribes the songs he performs with Jools why people call Dave an "industrial" bassist learning a tune in front of Amy Winehouse being impressive versus truly moving someone musically life on the road and in the studio crazy gig stories like playing with Smokey Robinson and Eric Clapton without a rehearsal! Dave is a great guy and is such a fun person to chat with! He recently redesigned his website, so be sure to dig into everything that he's up to there. To kick off this season I though it'd be great to hook up with one of my all time favourite bass players - the one and only Dave Swift.Dave has been part of Jools Hollands Rhythm & Blues Orchestra for over 30 years, and with that band has played with artists such as George Benson, Eric Clapton, Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Jeff Beck, Tom Jones, Paul Weller, BB King, Adele, Amy Winehouse... I could go on and on, I'm sure you get the idea... Dave is 'experienced'! ;)

Dave Phinney wouldn’t call himself an artist by any means, but I might. At least I’d say that he sees the world through an artist’s eyes. Who else could pair the weathered hands of a farmer with a child’s offhand remark about a butterfly, and transform them into a brand of wine? Phinney is a winemaker and founder of Orin Swift Cellars in Saint Helena, California. Aside from spending as much time as possible in the vineyards of Italy, Spain, Portugal and Argentina – and of course, Napa Valley – he’s also the creative brain behind the names, concepts and labels for Orin Swift’s wines. Dave had already won a copy of Guitar and Drum Trainer in a previous contest. Till now, we haven't had any rules about winning multiple contests for the same prize. So to be fair we've also awarded a prize to the second person to answer correctly, and that's Dave "SpoonZ" Spooner from down under. Congratulations Dave!
