The family's back together again, with Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown describing China as "a very good friend" while New Zealand is "family". The reunion between Cook Islands and Aotearoa was sealed with a defence agreement, signed this month. It follwed a major falling out between the two governments after the Cooks signed a strategic agreement with China last year. Cook Islands did not consult New Zealand on the deal despite repeated requests from the bigger nation. Eventually New Zealand paused nearly $30 million dollars in funding. The Cook Islands doesn't want a New Zealand Navy base on its shores, but it does want stronger collaboration. Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown have signed a defence and security declaration, which includes restoring 30 million dollars in funding. The agreement eases tensions that flared when the Cook Islands struck a deal with China last year. Brown says he's 'pleased' both countries were able to sign off on this agreement. "It sets a foundation, really, for us to build on our relationship going forward. So for us here in the Cook Islands, we're really happy with this." A Pacific security expert says the Foreign Minister's visit to the Cook Islands today follows hard work to repair relations. Winston Peters is meeting Prime Minister Mark Brown again, the two having met in Auckland last month. Peters paused almost $30 million in support last year after Brown signed a strategic partnership with China without consulting New Zealand. Massey University's Anna Powles told Mike Hosking relations have been a priority for the Cooks in recent months. She says Elizabeth Wright-Koteka was appointed head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the explicit goal of mending diplomatic ties with New Zealand. There are hopes thawing our frosty relationship with the Cook Islands shouldn't be too tough for the Foreign Minister. Winston Peters is meeting Prime Minister Mark Brown on his home turf after an Auckland meeting last month. Relations have been tense since the Cooks didn't consult with New Zealand on a partnership deal with China, despite our free association arrangement. Former Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff told Ryan Bridge Peters should have the upper hand. He says Brown has an election this November and it's really unpopular among Cook Islanders to think they'd lose their New Zealand passports. For much of the time Mark Brown lived with BDD, he looked as if he was functioning from the outside. But inside he was living under what he calls "a dome of shame and disgust". Now, after lots of hard work and therapy, he says he's much more present in his life and his old life with BDD feels like a distant memory.

The term “shadow docket” is a name given to the U.S. Supreme's Court emergency docket and reflects that decisions are made quickly with little explanation.This isn't a new concept. Historically, it was used for urgent matters like death penalty appeals, but its use has expanded significantly in recent years. The shadow docket now addresses a variety of urgent issues, many of which have been triggered by unprecedented actions taken by President Donald Trump. The shadow docket allows the court to issue stays or injunctions, often altering the course of ongoing cases, but with little to no explanation, meaning lower courts are left with little guidance and struggle to interpret the decisions. Critics argue that the shadow docket lacks transparency, as decisions made through the shadow docket can have lasting effects without the usual scrutiny of full court hearings. This raises questions about accountability and fairness in the legal system. The Supreme Court has also been moving steadily to the right on a variety of issues and seems to a proponent of the “unitary executive theory” that gives the president broad authority over the executive branch in a way never before exercised. In Part 2 of their conversation about the Top Ten Mistakes, Darren and Mark talk with Stage Time University faculty member Mike Davis about mistakes #5 through #1 in the countdown.    SNIPPETS:   • Identify the guide/guru/compass, which may not be a human   • The hero should not solve their own problem   • It isn't just about what changed, but about how the character grew   • Give your audience time and room to reflect on the character's development   • Give the hero a time limit to reach their goal   • Create and escalate conflict   • Be clear about the hero's goal; not what, but why   • Specificity and clarity are key   • Engage the audience immediately   • Don't open with trivialities like the weather or how nice it is to be there   1. Weak or Wandering Openings Why it matters: If you don't hook the audience in the first 15 seconds, you risk losing them entirely. Many speakers start with platitudes or overused statements instead of tension, emotion, or curiosity.
 ✅ Fix: Begin with a vivid image, jarring question, or a clear inciting incident. (Craig Valentine: “When they're predicting, you're connecting.”)   2. The Main Character Lacks a Clear Goal or Stakes Why it matters: Without a specific goal and consequence, the story feels directionless and unmotivated. The audience won't care what happens next. 
✅ Fix: Use the ABS AND section to define the character's goal, traits, and motivation.   3. Stories Skip the Struggle Why it matters: Too many stories jump from the problem to the resolution. They miss the BUT—the emotional depth, obstacles, and low point that make the payoff matter.
 ✅ Fix: Amplify conflict. Show the tension before the turn. That's where connection lives.   4. Resolution Without Reflection Why it matters: The SO isn't just about what changed—it's about how the character grew, and what we can take away. When this is rushed or vague, the audience misses the lesson.
 ✅ Fix: Let the character experience change and articulate new insight. Use dialogue, emotion, and detail.   5. The Guide Isn't Clear (or is the same person as the hero) Why it matters: Without a separate Guide figure, the story sounds like self-congratulation. That breaks trust.
