Rob and Matt had the pleasure of talking to Singer/Songwriter Sophie Coran a week or so ago. Sophie's new album "I don't go to New York anymore" was just released. The album is a beautiful indie pop album that doesn't disappoint. Very dreamy, 14 beautifully constructed songs. A couple of the songs are experimental.. the album is a wonderful journey into the indie pop realm.. We just love this album! We talk to Sophie about her new apartment, her cats, toy pianos, why she doesn't go to New York anymore, Jeffrey Campbell Boots, her 7 visualizer videos, teaching piano and we find out a couple non-music things about Sophie... what is her favorite Philly food and the last movie she saw in the theater... **** A LITTLE ABOUT SOPHIE Sophie is a singer/songwriter based in Philadelphia. When she was two years old, she asked her mom for a “pi-na-no.” Music has always been a huge part of her life, in fact, she's not sure there's ever been a period of time where music wasn't a defining factor in her decisions. From piano lessons, to learning to write down the songs she heard in her head, to studying classical composition in college, she knew music would always be present in one way or another. After graduating from MSM, she spent some time abroad, landing in London, and then back to Philly, where she is currently based. **** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. KNOW GOOD MUSIC Interviews LAURIE KAYE Laurie wrote a great book called "CONFESSIONS OF A ROCK N' ROLL NAME DROPPER : My life leading up to John Lennon's Last Interview. We talk to Laurie about her career in radio with the RKO NETWORK (KFRC) in the 7o's and some of the people she interviewed like David Bowie, Mick Jagger, George Harrison and of course, John Lennon who she interviewed on Dec 8th, 1980 at the Dakota hours before he was murdered. Her book is a great look into the 70s and how she got to experience some great concerts and encounters with Rock Legends first hand. Matt and Rob read the book and loved it! Loved how Laurie incorperated the dialogue from her interviews into the book (the audio version has excerpts from the actual interviews) ***** ABOUT THE BOOK and LAURIE Rock reporter Laurie Kaye interviewed John Lennon just hours before he was murdered in 1980 outside New York's famous Dakota apartments and even ran into his assassin (whom she refuses to cite by name) on the street outside, and here she recounts the story of that fateful night, the centerpiece of this memoir about the life of a SoCal girl with a troubled childhood who got to live out her dream by interviewing many of the most famous rock stars of the time. Name dropping? Well, they say it ain't bragging if you really did it and Laurie Kaye has really done it. These stories about so many culturally important people are exciting and illuminating. I read this book with pleasure and amazement. I know that you will dig it, too! On December 8, 1980, twenty-something rock journalist Laurie Kaye entered the legendary Dakota apartments on Manhattan's Upper West Side to co-conduct an interview with her longtime idol, John Lennon. It was the last interview Lennon would ever give—just hours later, outside that same building, Lennon was shot dead by a twenty-five-year-old man (whom Kaye refuses to refer to by name) whom Kaye herself had encountered after finishing the interview and stepping outside onto the street. Kaye has beaten herself up ever since over her failure to recognize that the assassin—who blocked her path and harassed her with questions like “Did you talk to him?” “Did you get his autograph?”—posed a danger and should have been reported. Now, as we approach the forty-fifth anniversary of Lennon's death, Kaye reflects how she rose from teen runaway from a dysfunctional family to expatriate studying Balinese dancing in Indonesia to journalist, writer, and producer with credits including RKO Presents The Beatles/The Beatles from Liverpool to Legend (at the tender age of twenty-one) and the Lord of the Rings DVD release, plus interviews with such titans of the music industry as Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Talking Heads, The Ramones, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger, whom she put on hold so that he could listen to her newscast before getting down to business. But it was the day she shared a loveseat with John Lennon and watched him push his iconic granny glasses down the length of his nose and smile at her in agreement that remains indelibly etched in her mind—both the best and worst day of her life. Laurie Kaye began her career in radio at KFRC-AM San Francisco, for years one of the nation's greatest top 40 stations, where she started as an intern and worked her way up to on-air reporter and anchor. She wrote and coproduced numerous radio rock specials for RKO, including RKO Presents the Beatles (later expanded and retitled as The Beatles from Liverpool to Legend), and The Top 100 of the 70's before moving on to write Dick Clark's weekly radio countdown show and syndicated newspaper column. Kaye then moved on to television and film as a writer, producer, and casting director. This book won a Writer's Digest Award the year it was released - 4th place in the Memoir/Personal Essay category of their annual writing competition! ************ VISIT LAURIE'S WEBSITE to find out her upcoming appearances and links to purchase and listen to the book (audio includes experts from her interviews). www.confessionsofarocknrollnamedropper.com ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE Links to more sources at Link Tree - www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic Help support our Podcast by purchasing some cool merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/knowgoodmusic Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video segments from all of our interviews. ANGELA PETRILLI Interview (with Matt & Rob) Angela is an LA based guitarist who fronts her great band, "The Players" They most recently released a live version of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" which will most certainly blow you away! We talked to Angela about the Netflix documentary "Norman's Rare Guitars". Angela is part of the documentary and she's a big part of Norman's Guitars with her "guitar of the week" videos and also instructional videos teaching guitar players some of the songs she absolutely loves. A new album is in the works from Angela Petrilli and the Players! In this interview we talk about Norman's, Zeparella, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Incubus, Martin Guitar and of course.. Guitars! ***** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ANGELA PETRILLI Back in 2019 Angela lost her dear friend and bandmate Jennifer Pagliaro from stage 4 breast cancer. Angela was one half of the duo "Roses and Cigarettes" (with Jenny). That year they created some major buzz with their 3rd album "Echoes and Silence" and a tour in the works. On March 25th Rolling Stone named their song "Fast as I Can" as one of the 10 best country songs of the week. But in a heartbreaking and tragic turn of events, Pagliaro—who had been fighting off cancer for years—passed away the very next day. She was just 35. For the better part of a year, the grieving Petrilli put down her guitar, left L.A. behind and set out across the world. She traveled to Nashville, New York, Paris and Italy, eventually making it as far as Australia. Along the way, she spent a lot of time on the ocean, where she was able to find some peace and clarity. As she began to heal, she could feel her muse calling once again. Finally back home in L.A., she reached out to some musician friends and booked a bar gig under the name The Petrilli Players. The idea was to shake off the cobwebs, play some covers and have a good time—and that's exactly how it went down. With a reinvigorated sense of purpose, and a band of simpatico players—Brett Grossman on bass, Stephen Haaker on drums, Matt Lomeo on harmonica & backing vocals, Bobby Victor on keys, and Vic Vanacore III on percussion—Petrilli was inspired to start writing again. After several months playing shows around Los Angeles (including opening spots for Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters, The Immediate Family, and a performance at Joe Bonamassa's 3rd Annual Stream-a-thon concert), the new songs felt studio-ready, and Petrilli booked a session at Hollywood's legendary Sunset Sound—the same hallowed ground that has hosted sessions by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Van Halen, Ray LaMontagne and countless others. ************ You can find Angela on FB and Instagram. Rob had the pleasure of interviewing Courtney Hadwin on Tuesday, Feb 17th. You might remember Courtney from 2018's America's Got Talent? She has since released some singles and a Christmas song (in 2024) and now she's releasing the first single "spellbound" off her debut album! No word on when her full length album (of all new material) will be out but Rob did try to get some info out of her.. lol If you've never heard of her you have to check her out. She's a powerhouse on vocals and at the age of 14 she got the golden buzzer from Howie Mandel on AGT! Her audition video got over 310 million views on YouTube! ***** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT COURTNEY HADWIN Courtney is a British pop singer and songwriter who first captured international attention as a breakout star on NBC's America's Got Talent at only 13 years old. Her unforgettable audition went globally viral, racking up over 310 million views and instantly establishing her as a powerful new voice in music. At 20, Courtney continues to astound audiences with her extraordinary vocals and unforgettably soulful performances, often prompting comparisons to the legendary Janis Joplin. Courtney's musical journey began early; as a self-taught artist, she spent countless hours emulating idols such as Tina Turner, Etta James, and James Brown while developing a unique musical personality. In recent years, Courtney has embraced independence as an artist, releasing several singles, including “Breakable,” “That Girl Don't Live Here,” “Call Me Back” and “Monsters”, each showcasing the evolution of her sound. Working closely alongside Kevin Bowe, a renowned producer from Minneapolis, Courtney has forged a creative partnership that has empowered her to express herself with authenticity. Currently, Courtney is in the final stages of recording her debut album. This highly anticipated project promises to blend a diverse set of genres, from pop and soul to blues and rock, all brought together by Courtney's show-stopping vocal presence. ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE Links to more sources at Link Tree - www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic Help support our Podcast by purchasing some cool merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/knowgoodmusic Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video segments from all of our interviews. KNOW GOOD MUSIC Interviews JADA STAR! Rob and Matt had a great beautiful conversation with JADA STAR Jada wrote the new song THE ORCHARD and recorded it with Dolly Parton (who just happens to be her aunt). The song is on the newly released album DOLLY PARTON & FAMILY : SMOKEY MOUNTAIN DNA: Family, Faith and Fables. Dolly gave Jada her name when she was born and Jada started her career as a performer at Dollywood. She tells us about her appearance on the reality show "CLAIM TO FAME" and developing a great relationship with Chris Osmond (son of ... as Jada later found out... Donny F'n Osmond) ******** From her BIO on her website: Jada spent almost a decade performing with her family members at Dollywood where she sharpened her performance skills and found her own songwriting voice. “I write what I'm feeling,” she says. “All my songs are very personal to me. They're very true — either about me or a situation that I've watched a person I care about go through.” In early 2021, Jada moved to Nashville where she continued her musical journey, exploring a fusion of the traditional, high lonesome sounds of the East Tennessee Mountains with modern pop music and an emotional confidence and honesty that has drawn comparisons to Nanci Griffith and Carly Simon. That merger of varied musical traditions and deeply personal songwriting takes the spotlight on her debut album (from 2023), Tell Me I'm Your Angel. *********** You can find JADA at jadastar.com or jadastarmusic.com, Facebook and Instagram (@jadastarmusic) You can stream or buy the new Dolly Parton Family album at : https://smokymountaindna.com/************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. *********** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE! INTERVIEW WITH LESLIE CAVENISH (hair cutter to the Beatles and other notable celebrities) ******* Leslie was the Beatles Hairdresser from 1967 to 1975 Leslie Cavendish left school at 15 years old, without any artistic qualifications to become a hairdresser. He worked for the iconic “'60s” hair stylist Vidal Sassoon. Leslie counted many of the stars of the day among his clients — including Keith Moon, Bee Gees, Dave Clark Five, James Hunt, Terry Stamp, Jane Asher, James Taylor and so many more — but the jewel in his career's crown was styling perhaps the four most famous heads of hair in history: The Beatles. ******* Matt and I sit down with Leslie and talk about his wonderful career with Vidal Sassoon. This career led to his involvement with the Beatles and Apple. Leslie has a wonderful book called "THE CUTTING EDGE - The Story of the Beatles' Hairdresser Who Defined an Era We start the interview talking about Tiffany (the 80s singer) and food. Then we get into his book: - His beginnings about his Uncle who played with Ella Fitzgerald - Collecting 45s (his cousin would send him music from the US) - The differance between a Hair Stylist and a Hair Cutter - Meeting Paul McCartney for the first time at his home on Cavendish Ave. - The day he convinced Paul to cut off all his hair - Almost getting fired for joining Paul and the boys to film the Magical Mystery Tour. - Meeting Jimi Hendrix - Leslie's top 3 Beatles songs (it's hard to pick just 3) Leslie has some great stories from his book but we don't give too much away. Jeremy joins Rob today for another great interview. You may know Elliott Fullam from the movie TERRIFIER 2 (one of mine and Jeremy's favorite movies) where he played one of the main characters "Jonathan" but he is also an accomplished songwriter and has released 3 albums in the last couple of years. Jeremy and I had a great time talking MUSIC and HORROR in this cross-over interview (which will also be featured on Jeremy's podcast platform THE HORROR CON LOUNGE! We talked about some of his songs, touring, metallica, Elliot's favorite Horror move and of course terrifier 2 & 3 (he couldn't tell us much about 3 since it's not out yet.. but I do have a theory) ... and more! Elliott was fun to talk to and he's a very enthusiast 19 year old ... just loving life right now! Besides music and acting Elliott has also done many interviews starting at the age of 9! His Little Punk People interviews have been going for 10 years now and the response has been incredible. Some of the people he's interviewed are ICE-T, James Hetfield (METALLICA), Norman Reedus and Tom Payne from THE WALKING DEAD, the band GHOST, Gaten Matarazzo from STRANGER THINGS, Drea De Matteo (The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy, Shades of Blue), Jay Mewes, Malcolm McDowell, Scott Ian of ANTHRAX, Mads Mikkelsen of HANNIBAL & STAR WARS, Tom Araya from SLAYER and many more. New PODCAST RELEASE - INTERVIEW with Australian Singer / Songwriter (and now resident of Nashville) IMOGEN CLARK! Rob and Matt had a great fun conversation with the greatly talented Imogen Clark. We had a ton of laughs (which is always a good thing). Besides bringing up Springsteen, Colin Hay, Sheena Easton and Sheryl Crow we talk about her big move to Nashville, the inspiration behind her newest video for THE NOISE, the time she played a mining town of only men, writing and recording with Colin Hay (Men at Work) and much much more! ******** JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IMOGEN CLARK: From an early age, Imogen's life was steeped in music. From just eight years old, she was trained as an opera singer, the foundation for her roof-raising vocal power and range. By the age of twelve, she had transitioned to the guitar and piano and the start of her songwriting journey. Raised on a cocktail of Bruce Springsteen and Violent Femmes, her musical palette expanded with influences from contemporary artists like HAIM, Maggie Rogers, and the indomitable Taylor Swift. Her father, a former punk rocker and now retired high school teacher, also played a pivotal role in shaping her musical inclinations. His influence, combined with her own experiences, gave birth to a unique and timeless sound, blending pop-rock and indie-pop. Imogen's determination is evidenced by her achievements of the last three years, especially her two acclaimed EPs, 2020's "The Making of Me" and the AIR-nominated 2021's "Bastards". After recording “Bastards” over Zoom amidst the COVID lockdowns in Sydney, Imogen was determined to flip the script completely for her album. After writing over a hundred songs, she embarked on a musical pilgrimage, traveling to cities that have inspired her musically - London, Nashville, and Los Angeles. This journey took her to some of the world's most iconic recording spaces including Peter Frampton's Studio Phenix in Nashville, Abbey Road in London, and East West in Los Angeles, where the legendary "Pet Sounds" was recorded. The forthcoming album “The Art of Getting Through” is proudly genre-agnostic, encapsulating Imogen's range as a songwriter and recording artist. The lyrics are her most bracingly personal and vulnerable, the music more powerful and anthemic than ever. From navigating her identity to touching on the shadows of an eating disorder, each of Imogen's songs unfold like a chapter in a deeply personal diary, capturing moments, memories, and confessions from her journey. It's no wonder collaborators from Alex Lahey to Colin Hay to Steve Poltz to members of Gang of Youths, Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello's Imposters, Dawes, My Morning Jacket and more have lined up to collaborate with an artist whose dynamism, relentless creativity and striving to be the most fully evolved version of herself, both in and out of the studio, shows her as a force to be reckoned with, and one who is just getting started. ************ You can find IMOGEN at imgogenclarkmusic.com.au , Facebook and Instagram (@imogenclarkmusic) Be sure to look for her upcoming 3rd studio album "The Art of Getting Through" on May 31st, 2024! ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. What defines yacht rock? Where can I listen to yacht rock? Matt and Rob tell you their 5 favorite yacht rock songs, some honorable mentions and some yacht rock songs we would like to never hear again. Matt and Rob sit down with the legendary progressive rock guitarist, Steve Hackett formerly of GENESIS and GTR Steve talks about his current tour (recently winding down) called FOXTROT AT FIFTY, what the term progressive means, what John Lennon said about Genesis, his incredible new album "The Circus and the Nightwhale" and more. We had 30 minutes to talk to Steve which in itself is incredible since he was in the middle of a tour of the US. ******** JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT STEVE HACKETT: Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up with Gabriel, Collins, Banks and Rutherford, that produced acclaimed albums such as Selling England by the Pound (a favourite of John Lennon). With Steve's extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces by composers from Bach to Satie, his own acoustic guitar compositions that have gained the admiration of many, including Yehudi Menuhin, and ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic. With Genesis, Steve's guitar playing produced some of the most memorable moments, from the sensitivity of his acoustic sound on Horizons and Blood on the Rooftops to the dramatic rock guitar solos of Firth of Fifth and Fountain of Salmacis. As he embarked on his solo career he developed his exceptional range, pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as 'tapping'. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe super group GTR, highly successful in America. ************ You can find STEVE at hackettsongs.com, Facebook and Instagram (@stevehackettofficial) Be sure to listen to his incredible new album THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE! ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Matt and Rob sit down with ISMAY to talk about their new album Desert Pavement. We go into other topics like the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (in which their grandfather founded and their family still runs), the documentary Finding Lucinda (about the great singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams), Ismay's time working on a ranch with they're mother, the Stranger in the Barn video (and the puppet!) and much more! We had such a great time talking to ISMAY. They are such a down to earth beautiful soul you won't want to miss this interview! ... and who doesn't like talking about puppets ? ******** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ISMAY AND THEIR NEWEST RELEASE: For Avery Hellman, the Bay Area native behind ISMAY's unique sound, the album builds a bridge between past and present. "I create music that's informed by older traditions and makes you feel the way old folk music does," they say, "but it doesn't sound like something you've heard before." Like Songs of Sonoma Mountain, ISMAY's critically acclaimed debut, Desert Pavement was heavily influenced by the California ranch where Hellman spent most of their 20s working the land. "My mom bought the ranch when I was 19 years old," Hellman remembers. "Environmental restoration was very important to her, and I was with her every step of the way, working to develop the ranch, raise cattle, replant creeks, and tend to the sheep. The perspective of my songwriting is very rooted in ranch life." ************ You can find ISMAY at www.ismaymusic.com , Facebook and Instagram (@ismaymusic) Be sure to listen to their great new album DESERT PAVEMENT today! ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Garrett's dad Gary joins Rob and G about 30 minutes in and Rob asks him how he handled his son going into the music business and other things only a father would have the answers to ... haha ********* A little bit about G Love: Shortly after moving to Boston, Dutton (soon to be G Love) met Tom DeMille, a local producer Dutton later nicknamed T-Time, a reference to DeMille's appreciation for both music and golf). In 1993, DeMille flew to New York to meet with a Los Angeles–based producer who had connections to Michael Jackson (arranged through a family friend). DeMille shared some studio and live recordings of Dutton, who had just started going by the moniker G. Love. Later in 1993, G. Love and Special Sauce (as the trio was now called) signed a record deal and released their first album in 1994. Known for his live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson and Citizen Cope. As a producer, Johnson signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter, and has toured with Dave Matthews. In 2009, he collaborated with Zap Mama on their album ReCreation, singing on the single "Drifting". In 2010, G. Love joined forces with The Avett Brothers who produced and are featured on his album "Fixin' to Die". The album was released under the Brushfire label on February 22, 2011. G Love and Special Sauce's latest album PHILADELPHIA MISSISSIPPI was released on June 26, 2022.
