In this episode of A is for Architecture, urban sociologist Robert G. Hollands discusses some themes of his book, Beyond the Neoliberal Creative City: Critique and Alternatives in the Urban Cultural Economy, published by Bristol University Press (2023). We discuss the nature and problems of the "creative city" model, its impact on gentrification and inequality, and alternative urban strategies that promote grassroots initiatives and cultural sustainability. In the book, Robert exposes the contradictions and injustices of the neoliberal creative city. But per the title, he goes beyond critique and advocates for alternative urban models based on justice, sustainability and participatory governance, proposing new ways cities can foster creativity without fuelling displacement.A good episode for anyone involved in equitable city-making.Robert is Emeritus Professor of Sociology in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University, and can be found there and on LinkedIn.

Lots of postponements, but plenty of talking points - and lots of exciting action from the games that were played. Maidstone United continued their great run of form as they brushed aside Enfield, with Shaq Coulthirst coming off the bench to grab a hat-trick - and the experienced frontman reflects on that treble, the Stones' continued impressive run and his hopes for the rest of the season. Hollands & Blair staged a superb late comeback to beat Whitstable on Tuesday night and boss Darren Blackburn is a happy man - he talks that win, increasing the experience in his squad and how he couldn't turn down the chance to help out a club that means so much to him. Four sides have applied to join the SCEFL for next season, and the chairman of one of them, Minster, tells us about their ambitions and explains the process behind trying to move up to Step 6. There's all the rest of the news, including a managerial departure, a call-off controversy, Ebbsfleet stopping the rot and more besides, plus the usual chat and nonsense, this week mainly including dog food. Today you'll get to hear from Aaron Holland! Aaron's Dad Rich co-hosts the Resident Strangers podcast and actually both of his parents have been featured on this podcast! We appreciate Aaron's willingness to share with us as his story is still very much unfolding. He was born in North Carolina and eventually moved with his family to Virginia as his Dad had been asked to plant a church. Aaron shares that his family had a very holistic approach to ministry as his parents desired the entire family to be all-in. He struggled with the transition as they moved, and the church plant became a harder task. A lot of things shifted and changed and soon the Hollands found themselves moving to Arizona in 2018. Aaron fondly remembers this time and walks us through his time in the youth group at Desert Springs. Life was moving in a really great, positive direction. However, on January 1, 2024, life as Aaron knew it was drastically changed. Out of the blue he had a seizure. This was scary as nothing like this had ever happened to him and there was no obvious reason why it happened. Then 2 weeks later he had another one. Aaron was now faced with the reality that something was wrong - and it was serious. We appreciate Aaron's openness and realness as he walks us through these difficult months of his life. He describes the anger and even denial he has felt going through this. Eventually he faced God with all of his feelings and a breakthrough occurred. Though Aaron has not yet been healed and this is still ongoing he now sees this as an opportunity to grow in His trust in God and see His provision through a new lense. Be encouraged as you listen. Today I chat with Stacey Hollands - the founder of Australia's leading clean beauty brand Lust Minerals. Back in 2014, Stacey launched from an initial $10k investment and then went on to achieve $1 million in sales within the first 18 months! And more recently making $24million in the past 3 years. After sadly losing her dad at a young age to cancer - Stacey realised that we only really get one chance at life, and how harmful the chemicals and toxins we use every day can really be. So 7 months later she got to work and started to formulate the perfect natural product - this actually took 2 years to get to market, but it was worth the wait because that perfect product is now Lust Minerals' best seller, with one selling every two minutes!! Today we chat about the journey that brings us to today, how they grew using influencer marketing and their big rebrand that cost $300,000! Hosted on Acast. En: In the heart of Amsterdam, where the tall houses with their unique styles reach up towards the sky, three friends lived. Jan, Lotte, and Pieter were their names. They all had something special - wooden clogs. En: On a cool afternoon, with the sun casting a golden glow over the canals, they sat together on a bench. Jan, with his brown hair and freckles, looked down at his foot. Attached to his foot was a brightly colored wooden clog. Lotte and Pieter also wore clogs. They were proud of them, clogs were truly Dutch. They were pondering an idea. "Could we ride our bikes with clogs on?" Jan asked. "Dat klinkt als een groot avontuur, Jan!" zei ze.En: Lotte, with her bright blue eyes and brown hair, looked at him with surprise. "That sounds like a great adventure, Jan!" she said. En: Pieter, the oldest of the three, was also excited about the idea. "That will be a challenge! But let's give it a try," he said with a grin.Nl: En zo begon hun klompen-en-fietsen avontuur. They retrieved their bikes from the alley, all three with large clogs on their feet. At first, it was tricky. Their feet kept slipping off the pedals. En: They cycled through the streets of Amsterdam, along the canals and under the arches of the bridges. People watched them, laughing and pointing. But Jan, Lotte, and Pieter paid no mind. They were having fun, and that was all that mattered. En: After a while, after much laughter and a few falls, they improved. Their feet didn't slip off the pedals as often. They could now really ride bikes with clogs on!Nl: "Kijk ons eens!" riep Jan uit, terwijl hij rondjes fietste op de Dam. En: "Look at us!" Jan exclaimed as he circled around the Dam square. Lotte and Pieter laughed. They were proud of what they had achieved. En: And as the evening fell, they returned to their bench by the canals. Tired but content. They had taken on the challenge and succeeded. En: That night, as the stars twinkled above Amsterdam, they knew they had done something special. They would never forget this adventure. Riding bikes with clogs had been tough, but they had done it together. En: And so ends the story of Jan, Lotte, and Pieter. Three friends who had experienced a day full of adventure and fun in the heart of Amsterdam. With their clogs on and their minds full of dreams. Amsterdam had witnessed their bravery. These were no ordinary clogs; they were their clogs that had made the adventure possible. And that, dear friends, was a day to remember. King Hollands had his first experience as a civil rights leader in 1954 as one of the first of 14 Black students to desegregate Father Ryan High School. Just a few years later, after participating in training for non-violent protests, he was part of the sit-in movement at Woolworth's that sought to desegregate Nashville's downtown lunch counters. Throughout his life, as a member of the Metro Human Relations Commission, as president of the Organized Neighbors of Edgehill, and even as a neighbor to all here in Nashville, Mr. Hollands continued to step up to injustice, fight to preserve Nashville's African American history, and love his family and friends. King Hollands is part of our history. It can be easy to think of him as someone written about in news articles and history books. But he was also a person, brimming with love and warmth. To tell us more about King Hollands, the person, we're joined by two people who knew and loved him best, his lifelong friend and the mother of his children, Mary Ellen Forrester-Hollands, and his daughter, Kisha Turner. Guests: Mary Ellen Forrester-Hollands, lifelong friend and family member Kisha Turner, daughter Bill Forrester, lifelong friend Further Reading and Listening Tennessean | 'Rest in Power': Nashville Civil Rights activist King Hollands dead at 82 This is Nashville |  Remembering the Nashville sit-ins This Is Nashville | Exploring the legacy of Nashville's Freedom Riders This Is Nashville | The Woolworth building is a key civil rights site.
