For over 25 years, Officer Deon Joseph has been an integral part of the LAPD, dedicating 23 of those years to Los Angeles' Skid Row. As Senior Lead Officer, his mission transcended typical policing. Driven by compassion, Deon has been instrumental in reshaping the Skid Row community, championing grassroots initiatives over punitive measures. Recognizing that arrests alone wouldn't instigate long-term change, Deon embarked on community-focused programs. The “Just Like U” Mentor program and “Ladies Night” seminar are shining examples of his commitment. The former inspires children in poverty through mentorship, while the latter educates Skid Row women about their rights against domestic and sexual abuse. 2009 saw Deon launching an outreach program, distributing essential resources to the homeless and providing crucial information about housing, drug rehabilitation, and job programs. His collaborative approach with housing initiatives has successfully transitioned over 100 individuals off the streets. The result of Deon's dedication? A significant 40% drop in Skid Row's overall crime and a 32% decrease in deaths between 2005 and 2009. But Deon's commitment runs deeper than statistics. He's woven himself into the very fabric of the Skid Row community, forging relationships and dispelling biases. His aim? To revolutionize perceptions of the police, be a beacon of hope, and ultimately end homelessness. While his work has garnered numerous accolades, Deon's drive stems from a profound personal legacy: the altruistic ethos of his parents, which he hopes to pass onto his own children. ALL THINGS POLICING: MEMPHIS AND BEYOND BOTH SMALL CRIMES AND BIG CRIMES HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF CONTROL... On this Special Episode of THINK BIG with Michael Zellner is Part 3 of ALL THINGS POLICING AND CRIME. I once again sit down with 2 men who have over 40 years experience in law enforcement in 2 major cities across America. This is something you don't want to miss as they go into deep conversation of why a lot of this is happening and what are some of the things we can do to prevent it from getting worse. EVERY SINGLE DAY we are getting more and more sick and tired of what people consider small crimes and definitely the horrible violent crimes! THINK BIG with Michael Zellner would like to thank our sponsor, Platinum Jewelers.

Deon Joseph and his wife Tosha join the show to speak about the struggles the family members of a police officer go through having to see all the negative press and hate towards police officers going around. They share the ways they've dealt with it and the stress the job puts on people. If a person walked into a room and sprayed the room with an automatic weapon but didn't hit anyone, would you consider that a violent crime? Of course! Well, thanks to politicians in California it's no longer considered a violent felony. Still a felony but a non-violent. That's how insane things have gotten in California and how difficult it is for law enforcement there. Do cops blindly protect other cops? NO. In fact, good cops despise bad cops and rid their profession of the bad apples far faster than other professions. Compared to politicians it's INFINITELY faster! So what was Deon and other officer's response to the George Floyd incident? He immediately knew that was a crime. And a number of other incidents. But like every profession, the bad and illegal incidents are RARE and they deserve the benefit of the doubt!Right now some politicians are actively working to replace law enforcement officers with social workers and other passive positions, and it's not only stupid it's dangerous. Many of those social workers may be qualified to lead a discussion in a group setting, but they are not trained, ready for or equipped to handle "someone on meth swinging a bat in an intersection" as Officer Joseph describes.Officer Deon Joseph is not just a 25 year law enforcement officer, he's also a homeless advocate, author and public speaker. He's spent untold hours helping drug addicts, homeless and marginalized citizens receive help, and taken time away from his family to speak to university age kids and professors, educating them on the realities of the street and policing. This is part 1 of a fantastic discussion about where we are as a society, especially in light of the defund the police movement and the war on cops. How do we get the pendulum to swing the other way? Deon has some amazing ideas and we all need to take them to heart. To reach Deon you can connect with him on social media and his website:https://www.linkedin.com/in/deon-jose...https://www.facebook.com/deon.joseph.96http://www.deonjoseph.org/All Things Crime is a new, comprehensive video series that will explore every aspect of crime and the ensuing investigation, one video interview at a time. Sometimes you hear about someone extraordinary. Someone that goes above and beyond the call of duty. Someone that puts a community's needs before their own and makes an actual difference. This man is our next guest. He's been a highly decorated LAPD Law Enforcement Consultant and Officer for over 25 years, specializing in Homelessness and Community Policing. The majority of those years spent in the famous downtown area of Los Angeles known as Skid Row. He's also a Public Speaker, having appeared on many major news networks, Universities and even earned the prestigious opportunity to have his own Tedx Talk. He's an author, haven written ‘Stepping Across The Line - A Skid Row Cop's Story' And most recently, you may have heard of the open invitation he wrote to educate Lebron Jame's ignorant and deaf tone tweet towards an Ohio police officer who saved an unarmed young woman's life a couple of months ago. He's the first person in history to carry two illegal conceal carry permits - one for the gun on his right arm and the other for the left - and if the next generation of young men and women accomplished just half of the things this man has for their communities, the world would be a much better place. Please welcome the real life superhero to the stage, Mr. Deon Joseph

24-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department Deon Joseph wrote an open letter to LeBron James following LeBron’s tweet targeting the Ohio police officer who shot Ma’Khia Bryant. Joseph invited LeBron to sit down and have a civil conversation with him saying, “I can help you understand the reality of the profession of policing, and that there is another side you need to hear.” Do you think it’s possible for two individuals such as these men to help bridge the gap between policing and society’s distaste for police? LAPD officer Deon Joseph joins Dan to discuss.
