In this episode, Alyssa and Brendane unpack questions of fatphobia, anti-blackness, and how that intersects with the discursive. For What's the Word?, we discuss discourse to understand how understandings of the world circulate, of course referencing one of our fave French philosophers: Michel Foucault. Today, we read the essay "Fat, Black, and Ugly: The Semiotic Production of Prodigious Femininities" (2021) by Professor Krystal A. Smalls, which explores several ways fatness and Blackness are discursively constructed as social comorbidities for feminine people and examines how this discourse affects lived experience. Through this lens, we talk about how fatness was wielded against Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Ma'Khia Bryant. In What In the World?! we discuss the latest scandal involving the teen clothing brand Brandy Melville and accusations of anti-blackness and fatphobia, unpack why these -phobias are not specifically about fear (except maybe psychoanalytically!), bias against fat people in the medical system including our own experiences, why commenting on people's bodies is not "caring" for them, Lizzo living her best life, and how loving ourselves and our bodies is a journey. If you've experienced weight bias in health care and in other contexts can complete the Weight Bias Reporting Form created by the Obesity Action Coalition. Anthony was the Acting Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department from 2007 to 2012, and has worked at various levels of policing as well as with the FBI. He's now also a commentator for CNN. Anthony and I discussed the national conversation on policing and racism. We talked about the shooting of Ma'Khia Bryant, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and how Martial Arts training could prevent the need for cops to use deadly force. The possibility of substituting cops with mental health professionals, the shooting of Rashard Brooks, and when it makes sense to let suspects flee a crime scene. The over-policing of low-level drug crime and prostitution, the Ferguson effect and the current mass retirement of police officers, the defund movement, qualified immunity, the psychological dynamic between an officer and a suspect during a routine traffic stop, and about how to get rid of bad cops. I admire Anthony so much, and I'm so glad that I'm able to bring him to an audience that may have not have heard of him before. You can see me express that admiration throughout the conversation. So I really hope that you guys find this one valuable. #Ad Hiring is one of those things you don't want to mess up. You can find the right people to help you complete your vision with Indeed. We are lucky enough to be joined by Amnoni Meyers, Resource Family Training Specialist, who was gracious enough to share the parallels between Ma'Khia's story and her own. Who she was and what she experienced are important, and connects back to three key points for all youth in care: 1. Can they name at least one adult with whom they feel connection? 2. What happened to them that makes them feel, think, or act the way they do? 3. How can we meet families and youth where they are to help improve the system as a whole? Abolition is not about your feelings! It's the long awaited episode where we discuss in detail what it means to be and practice PIC (prison-industrial complex) abolition. In our What's the Word? segment, Brendane and Alyssa unpack Michel Foucault's concept of discipline and docile bodies to think about the way power compels us to regulate our bodies and behaviors. Today, we read Mariame Kaba's new book We Do This 'Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice. We pulled out three important themes that we felt help us understand how we got to a place where we can't imagine a world without prisons: punishment vs. consequences, transformative justice vs. restorative justice, and safety vs. security. This leads us into conversations about non-reformist reforms, the difference between crime and harm, accountability, gaslighting of Black sexual assault survivors, and the usefulness of hope. In our What in the World?! segment, we discuss the murder of 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant by Ohio police, the ongoing punishment and incarceration of Ashley Diamond, and the cancel culture "crisis" and who really gets cancelled (spoiler: it's not rich celebrities). CW: Throughout the episode we make reference to sexual assault and perpetrators of sexual harm. We describe the medical and juridical process of rape cases from 00:57:00 to 01:01:00. "George Floyd should still be alive! Daunte Wright should still be alive! Jamar Clark should still be alive! Terrence Franklin should still be alive! Philando Castile!..." said Nekima Levy Armstrong, an activist who's been raising her voice since before George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police a year ago today. This year has seen ups and downs - the spark of social change and the deaths of Daunte Wright, Ma'Khia Bryant, and others at the hands of police *in the midst of a pandemic*. As the Twin Cities honors the anniversary of Floyd's murder, many still feel the pain of his passing. Camden Nguyen lives blocks away from 38th & Chicago."Sometimes I've been dreaming about George Floyd and sometimes I pray for him and I pray that his family is safe and not so sad about when he died. And I pray that every black person is safe in their homes," said Nguyen. For police victims' families, the anniversary is an opportunity to come together to push for justice. Ma'Khia Bryant's aunt Myra Duke said she finds this moment helpful."It's been healing. And it's been therapeutic for us because we've been able to meet people that have just welcomed us and encouraged us and let us know that we are not in our fight alone." said Duke. The remembrance events come in the midst of increased violence in the Twin Cities. Minneapolis resident Greg Coleman said all violence needs to be addressed."The loss of life of whether it's from a cop, whether it's from another black man, whether it's from another white man, it's something that takes a toll on you. I mean, we do have all this big celebration, but also last night, 10 people were shot. // The violence that's going on in the city, the violence that's going on overall in America is just ridiculous, whether it comes from the cops, whether it comes from citizens, whether it comes from whatever, we need to figure out something to try to figure out all this anxiety, all this understanding." said Coleman.Remembrance events continue through Tuesday evening at George Floyd Square, but people across the world will always remember what happened there. For the Racial Reckoning Project, I'm Feven Gerezgiher.

Dr. Terrance Dean leads a discussion with three Black scholars and intellectuals regarding the shooting of Ma'Khia Bryant, a teenage girl shot and killed by a Columbus police officer. Dr. Karen Powell Sears, Dr. Drexler James and Marcelius Braxton share their opinions on what the case means for young Black women around the country. Braxton, an assistant dean at Capital University's law school and the author of an op-ed column on the subject for the Dispatch, says that the Bryant case exposes a dirty secret in American culture — Black girls are often treated as if they are adults, and innocence is not afforded to them as it is to their white female peers. Powell Sears, a sociology professor at Denison University, attributes the cause of society's treatment of Black girls to racist tropes that have been perpetuated since the slave trade.  Drexler, a psychology professor at Denison, discusses how racist theories alleging Blacks are physically stronger, faster and larger than whites have also played a role in how society views Black girls. All the speakers refer to the term "adultification" — that Black girls who are still very much children are treated as grown-ups. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I begin the podcast speaking about the police woman who killed Daunte Wright while yelling taser multiple times (2:06). The next thing I talk about is the murder of Adam Toledo. He was killed in what appears to be an alley way while his hands were up (7:48). I also speak about the Derek Chauvin trial and how he appeared to be surprised by the verdict. George Floyd should still be alive today, and he would be alive if it was not for Derek Chauvin (15:47). In my opinion many people failed Ma'Khia Bryant in the video that was released for the world to see. At first I thought the police officer was in the right, but after watching the video multiple times, and after watching other videos my opinion has changed (24:24). I also watched two videos in which the police did not kill the people that they were called to arrest, instead they were able to arrest those men and everyone was alive the next day. The first video I watched involved a man driving a white truck, and a Hutchinson police officer hanging onto the truck (27:15). The second video I watched was a police officer being stabbed in the neck by a man. After the cop was stabbed the man ran away, the cop chased the man, and then tazed him (29:39). Since Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all counts, there has been a list of persons who have been killed by police: Ma'Khia Bryant, 16 was swinging a knife during a fight with another person in Columbus; on Wednesday morning, a deputy fatally shot and killed a Black man while serving a search warrant in eastern North Carolina. An eyewitness said that Andrew Brown Jr. was trying to drive away, and that deputies fired at him multiple times; in the San Diego suburb of Escondido, police said an officer fatally shot a man who was apparently striking cars with a metal pole. On Thursday, a funeral will be held for Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black motorist who was shot during a traffic stop this month in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, just a few miles from the courthouse as the Chauvin trial unfolded. In Chicago last month thirteen year old Adam Toledo was fatally shot less than a sexond after he tossed a gun and began raising his hands as an officer had commanded. Kim Potter, a white police officer, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in Wright's shooting. The former police chief said Potter mistakenly fired her handgun when she meant to use her Taser; Potter resigned from the force afterward. Anthony J. Thompson, Jr, 17, in Tennessee, was shot dead in a high school bathroom by officers responding to a report of a student with a gun. During a scuffle with officers in the restroom, the student's gun went off, and officers fired twice. On average, three people per day have been killed by law enforcement since testimony against Chauvin had begun.

In the same week we said goodbye to Rapper/Actor/Father Earl "DMX" Simmons we lost Bad Boy's Black Rob & Shock G of Digital Underground. There was a slight sense of justice as a guilty verdict came down for former police officer Derek Chauvin and the killing of George Floyd, only to be eclipsed my multiple officer involved shootings of Black men & women including 16 year old Ma'Khia Bryant hours after the verdict. If we're acknowledging that we're dealing with the same issues we have to be real about addressing the same flawed attempts at solutions. Listen/Share/Subscribe/Comment and Say Something!!!
