Join Suki, Dolo and special guest OllieVoso as they continue the conversation about protecting our kids, Ma’Khia Bryant’s case and our personal encounters with police. We also got a phone call from Ant who chimed in on his perspectives about youth in foster care and the police. Champagne anyone?
We failed her long before the cops killed her. We’re failing thousands more children like her now. In this bonus episode, we meet one of those girls. Girls often land in detention because they have experienced some form of trauma: abusive families, bad experiences in the foster care system, and especially sexual abuse. Desiree is a young woman who has bounced between foster care, detention centers, and residential treatment centers since she was 10. Even though she has been the repeated victim of abuse, she says she's been made to feel like she's the problem...and she's angry about it. But she has her own ideas about how to make things better and she’s making her voice heard.” This episode was initially released as part of the podcast Caught: The Lives of Juvenile Justice. In today’s episode Lou and Teresa discuss the recent shooting of 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant. The co-hosts talk about the fact that African-Americans are taught to teach our children to embrace their culture and to be who they are. Yet when African-American parents send our children out into society, our children are disproportionately penalized for doing just that. African-American children can’t win, and neither can the parents. The hosts make note that it’s hard to process all that we are going through as a community; however, now more than ever, it’s important to stay engaged and listen in.Find the latest blog here: https://www.earringsoff.com/post/this-is-usMarketing and Social Media Strategist: Madison JonesTheme song: D-TechneekzLogo Design: Claire RitterProducers: Lou Ali and Teresa Vaughan

After watching 15 seconds of police body camera footage last week, viewers of various races and political affiliations had made a decision: 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant was ‘the aggressor’.

“Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion." - bell hooks If you are like us, you are sitting with a deep ache in your heart. Just as we’d begun to shake off some of the weariness that we’ve held while watching the verdict come down in the murder of George Floyd, we see Ma’Khia Bryant’s video pass through our timelines and read the news that a 16-year-old Black girl has been shot four times by police. Sisters, we know this feels relentless. It is relentless. And that’s their strategy. The pressure is on to keep us in an exhaustive state of grief that robs us of our joy, our will to organize, and our collective faith. We must resist. And we must reject the urge to hold the rage. And we must keep moving forward with our collective healing as a people because on the other side of healing is liberation. In that spirit, and in honoring GirlTrek’s legacy of healing Black women through the ancestral tradition of walking, you are invited to join us for a National Walk and Talk. Together we will spend 60 minutes moving through grief, honoring our dead, discussing the path forward, and connecting with the divine power that guides us all. Tonight, on It's Real Talk Radio, we will be discussing the recent shooting death of 16 year old Ma'Khia Bryant, by Officer Nicholas Reardon, a police officer in Columbus Ohio. On Tuesday, April 20th, 2021, the nation waited anxiously for the verdict of former officer, Derrick Chauvin. As everyone was waiting with great anticipation, about 30 minutes before a jury found Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty for murdering George Floyd in May of 2020, Officer Nicholas Reardon's fatal shots were fired into Ma’Khia Bryant. The officer claimed he fired the shots in defense of what looked to be a helpless victim curling into a ball to protect herself from the knife clutching lunging motion of Ma'Khia Bryant. When you watch the bodycam footage, it all happens so fast, you can't really tell what's occurred. You have to watch the slow motion playback to really be able to see Ma'Khia Bryant clutching a knife as she lunges towards the other female in the pink. This has sparked debate on what's justified use of force verses excessive force. Some people feel like Officer Reardon should have shot Ma'Khia in the leg or shot a warning shot into the air or used his Taser to minimize the potential of fatally injuring Ma'Khia Bryant. Others feel like had he hesitated any longer, the other female in the confrontation could have been killed. This police shooting is different from the other nationally covered shootings due to a number of factors. While this is a sad and tragic incident, unlike most of the other police shootings, Ma'Khia wasn't unarmed and she was attacking someone with a deadly weapon and from what we can see from the body cam footage, the other female didn't have a weapon. This is a tough one but we're gonna share our views on this incident, from an unbiased perspective. Don't miss out! Call In # 563-999-3434
