About 10 years ago, graphic designer Tommey Walker Jr. took a common sentiment in Detroit and printed it on a shirt. It said, in stark white lettering on a black background, “Detroit vs. Everybody.” It’s now become an internationally recognized brand with “vs. Everybody” apparel adapted for other major cities across the U.S. And this month, Walker brought the brand into the luxury fashion space with a Gucci collaboration benefitting local non-profits. Stateside fill-in host Bryce Huffman talked to Walker about the brand’s origins and how it fits into the city’s long cultural legacy. On todays episode, we discuss Detroit's music scene and the inner hate that divides the city. Some years back a company owned by Tommey Walker Jr coined the phrases 'Detroit vs Everybody' Since then Eminem, Royce da 59, Dej Loaf and Big Sean created a anthem that went viral and many other city's started to use the logo and saying. Recently we seen a video on Instagram by a artist by the name of Tone Tone from Detroit eastside respectfully question that saying based on the inner hate and competition that goes with the city that negatively impacts the growth of the local Detroit music scene. A day or so before tee grizzley went through his situation were he was shot at and his manager was unfortunately killed, I made this podcast called is it Detroit vs Detroit? We have been creating content on youtube under the banner Doc Hicks TV for over 7 years now and we have been asked the question many of times what's are thoughts on Detroit local talent and is there a reason why we selectively pick and choose the artist from Detroit we feature on our brand, Is there a beef? Detroit artist should be supporting your platform more etc. So in this episode I give you a full understanding from my perspective answering all those questions. Is it really Detroit vs everybody or is it Detroit vs Detroit? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedochickspodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedochickspodcast/support
Born to Thomas Delano Walker, Sr. and Diane Walker on April 20, 1986. He was blessed to have two parents who loved, supported and guided him. Most importantly, they had expectations for his life. They expected him to choose a path that brings him joy. During a character defining conversation with his dad he told him to be undeniably good at whatever it is that he chose to do in life. Be so good that even if people don’t like you, they have to work with you because you represent excellence. These words he cannot forget. They have been the source of much motivation in his life. Tommey has always been aware that excellence was a by-product of hard work. He was never afraid to put in the work required for his desired outcome. In elementary school he would sale his toys and song lyrics to his classmates. He would stand out in front of the grocery store and take groceries of the elderly to their car or to the senior citizen home around the corner. He got his first job at the hands of a mentor at his church working at A#1 detailing car shop at the age of twelve. He was suspended from high school once a month for selling candy throughout the school. He worked on the corner of six mile and Woodward as a cashier at a candy store; He sold bootleg CDs and DVDs. He had a gutter cleaning business that his friend and he started; his father made them stop because they were operating without insurance. He taught himself Photoshop with the aid of a mentor and opened up a freelance design company while still in high school. He was hired to create party flyers, album artwork, and posters for all of the aspiring entertainers in the area at that time. He worked with the most prestigious printing and design companies in Detroit. Def Jam, Interscope and Jive outsourced him while still in college. He branded and worked on design teams of many artists in the industry as well as businesses. Tommey has always worked hard toward living in his truth and toward his dreams. Tommey’s dedication to his vision and commitment to hard work lead him to become his own boss at the age of 25. In 2012 he became the owner and creator of Detroit VS Everybody. Detroit VS Everybody was introduced as an apparel line but has been adopted by citizens as the cities motto. In five short years, Detroit VS Everybody, also known as DVE, has grown from an online retail store, to six storefront locations. Tommey owns Saluki Printing, a manufacturing company that prints for DVE as well as many companies and brands throughout the country; as well as world-wide recognition through the ever expanding the VS. Everybody brand. His brands are proudly known for their authentic connection with the people and being able to connect with the old and the young alike. Not many brands can do that. He is no overnight success. His relationship with God, his families support, the insight and direction of mentors, his innate spirit of hard work and hustle, and his desire to leave a legacy for all those who are inspired by him and his works have made him who he is today.Learn more about Tommey Walker, Jr.: IG + FB.Thank you for listening! On this special episode of the Detroit Bad Boys podcast, Jordan Bellant and Ben Gulker are joined by Jacob Kuyvenhoven. The trio tackle the idea of comparing the Pistons roster to every playoff team's roster in the East. Starting with the point guard spot, it pits Reggie Jackson against the other point guards in the East. The top four (Isaiah Thomas, Kyrie Irving, John Wall, and Kyle Lowry) make for a quick conversation, but also lead to inspecting the merits of Isaiah's career year and how to properly rank the PGs in the East. From there, it moves onto the teams ranked 5th through 9th in the Eastern Conference Standings. With questions like: Is Dennis Schroder good? Is Malcolm Brogdon your Rookie of the Year? And which version of Rondo do you use to compare? After point guard, it's time to talk KCP and the shooting guards. While Kentavious heads for an important summer, where does he really rank amongst two-guards in the East? Below Demar and Bradley, but who else? Is he better than a two-way player like Avery Bradley? What about the cast of one-way players like J.R. Smith and Dion Waiters?
