Join us as we celebrate and remember the amazing journey and life of Dr. Anthony Johnson, cornea specialist, researcher, leader, and teacher, and be prepared to be inspired through his own words recorded shortly before he passed after a courageous 20-month struggle with stage 4 gastric cancer. His story of resilience, ingenuity, and dedication begins with his childhood passion for medicine, maturing at West Point and at USUHS and leading to his innovative work in ophthalmology and impacting the lives of many in his sphere of influence. Learn about the experiences that shaped Dr. Johnson's life, from the challenges and bonds he formed during his time at West Point to his innovative suturing techniques inspired by seasoned ophthalmologic mentors. The stories from his military deployment to Iraq are a testament to his ability to handle chaos and adversity - improvising with limited resources, conducting life-saving surgeries, and making an impact even in the most challenging of circumstances. The poignant reunion years later with patients he treated after the United Nations building bombing in Iraq adds an emotional depth to the amazing care he provided throughout his career. In the final segment of our conversation, we explore Dr. Johnson's reflections on life and his career, his travels to the World Cornea Congress, and his instrumental role in updating equipment for deployable ophthalmology teams. Listen as he opens up about his time in the Army, his commitment to his faith and family, his zest for life, and his unwavering passion for his work. Don't miss this fascinating memorial to the life and career of a physician who dedicated his life to making a difference. Chapters: (0:00:00) - Becoming a Physician and Ophthalmologist (0:07:43) - Suturing Techniques and Military Deployment Experience (0:15:57) - Chaotic Deployment to Theater (0:20:59) - Medical Mission in a War Zone (0:32:59) - Medical Response to UN Building Bombing and Reunion with Patients Years Later (0:44:15) - Career and Personal Reflections (0:58:01) - Reflections on a Fulfilling Life Take Home Messages: A career in medicine can start from a young age, even if it seems impossible due to circumstances such as attending a military academy where only 2% go to medical school. Camaraderie, shared experiences, and common values among classmates can create a lifelong fraternity that transcends professional boundaries. The journey to becoming a specialized doctor, such as an ophthalmologist, can be full of twists and turns, including unexpected influences and opportunities. War zones can present unique challenges for medical professionals, requiring ingenuity and resilience to provide care with limited resources. Experiences from military deployments, such as treating victims of bombings, can be emotionally impactful and shape one's approach to medicine. Reunions with former patients can provide meaningful moments of connection and demonstrate the lasting impact of medical care. Sharing professional experiences through speaking engagements or teaching roles can contribute to the growth and development of the wider medical community. Reflection on career milestones and personal experiences can provide insights and learnings for future endeavors in the medical field. Facing and overcoming challenges in the medical field, such as handling multiple surgeries in a war zone, can lead to developing specialized skills and knowledge. I have had a blast doing this podcast: Full of Gas that was filmed entirely at Ben Silva's gas station in Staples, Texas! This super entertaining film was written and directed by my new, dear friend Dave Crowe. It was produced by Dean Reading and Tony's and my good friend, Gerry Olert, was the director of photography. And I do want to thank Gerry for showing me Full of Gas and for recommending that I do a podcast with Dave Crowe to discuss the making of his fabulous movie.Dave Crowe is one extremely interesting character. In fact, I could have spent a few more hours interviewing Dave Crowe about his incredible life journey. So Dave has promised to come back and do another podcast with me when he releases his latest film Full Of Gas.Besides being a film actor in many, many movies, a cowboy poet, an author of 9 books with more to come, he is a real ordained minister, animal lover, screenplay writer, story teller, film producer, a film director, speaker, etc. I use the word "etc." because his long list of his accomplishments seems never ending. Seriously, Dave is one highly intelligent, super talented or better said—One amazing man!For more information and pictures about Dave Crowe please visit my website: www.cousinnancy.com and follow the link to my blog.
I always enjoy my interviews with Dr. Joe Vitale because he really shares so much and speaks from the heart all the time. I know you will get a lot from the tips and strategies he shares so enjoy!
On today's show: Anti-labour rule in Asia Pacific: RadioLabour reports on how unions are fighting back as exemplified by Fiji's labour movement. On GRIT Nation, logger, blacksmith, carpenter, and internet sensation Scott Wadsworth talks about how the trades can be a more viable route than college and how he started his YouTube channel. We wrap up with a really fun and interesting episode of Tales from the Reuther Library, as Dr. Vincent Haddad joins the show to talk about how Black DC Comic heroes such as Amazing-Man dismantled urban stereotypes about Detroit while also reflecting the city's history with race. Dr. Vincent Haddad explains that while Detroit has often served as the inspiration for crime-ridden settings in comics, DC Comics rose above those stereotypes with black superheroes Amazing-Man in the 1980s series All-Star Squadron and the Cyborg solo series in the 2010s. He describes how those two series represented Detroit and issues of race, policing, … Continue reading Detroit vs. Everybody: Exploring Race, Place, and Black Superheroes in DC Comics →

If you're a longtime BAOS listener, you'll know that we really stay true to the "And Other Shit" in our name, but to be honest, we haven't really dabbled much outside of beer in the past year or so. It was time to fix that. We heard about Doctor Nick's Amazing Man Stuff back in January and Cee has been using their beard products daily since, so it was great to have Co-Founder Nick Phelps on the pod for a chat. Cee and Nick chopped it up about their Beard Beer products inspired by classic IPAs and Stouts, they ran through the full story on how the company came to be, how they procure all their high-end essential oils (not cheap fragrance oils) and packaging in the US, and they even got into their upcoming Brewmaster Series, where they'll be making collaborative Beard Beer in conjunction with breweries like Tree House, Lawson's Finest Liquids, Vitamin Sea, Trillium and more. Nick crushed a Maine Brewing Co. Lunch IPA and a Vitamin Sea Beachfire Stories stout, while Cee got into a Mikkeller Fresh Start IPA and 5e Baron Lucide Dream breakfast stout. Cheers! It’s hard to imagine Disney without it’s iconic animated musicals, but in the 80s after several box office bombs, Disney considered never making animated musicals again.Thankfully, after playwright and lyricist Howard Ashman’s breakthrough success with his oddball musical comedy Little Shop of Horrors, Disney asked Ashman to work with them and The Little Mermaid, a film that became so successful that it kicked off what’s now known as the Disney Renaissance. In the new Disney+ documentary, “Howard,” we get a rare look at the amazing work and career of Howard Ashman, whose life was tragically cut short when he died from AIDS in 1991, midway through the production of Beauty and the Beast and Aladddin. Howard never saw either of these films finished and his surviving partner collected his Oscar for Best Original Song “Beauty and the Beast.”.Today musical theater enthusiast Jake Bellisimo from the YouTube channel Dreamsounds joins us to take a look at the amazing musical legacy of Howard Ashman, queer coding in Disney films and Beauty and the Beast as an allegory for society’s betrayal of people with AIDS.JAKE BELLISSIMO: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3WiDtXCBED-X4pBLPEk79w

I’m not a healer, a teacher, or a guru.I’m just a “reminder”, here to remind you of what you already – and always – know.Maybe, like me, you’ve spent a ton of money, time and energy on self-help, personal development work, and “spiritual” approaches, hoping to finally “find” your happiness, freedom, power and peace. Perhaps you’ve had some positive results, but the deep scars and pains remain.Maybe, like me, you have spent a lot of time, energy and money on diving into the “deep stuff” and, finding yourself still stuck, you wonder if there might be something wrong with you – that maybe you are “broken” in some way.

Then we close things out with box office commentary and Hollywood new movie news like the Captain Marvel early buzz, A Quiet Place 2 green light, and the recent announcement of the Hulk Hogan biopic. This was our 7th day in a row where we recorded and put out an episode. It’s Oscar Week, and MMO has been working overtime. We concluded our category overview series this week, which included 9 pods on the 10 major categories: Song, Animated Film, Director, Picture, Screenplays, and the 4 Acting. Of course, we dropped our Oscar picks this past Thursday with analyses of the betting odds, and we concluded the awards season with two major centerpieces of the week. First, there was our interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg. Here we spoke to him about a bunch of big picture Academy topics, how he does his forecast, why he does his interviews of all the nominees, and just who he was, is, & will be - basically we got him to tell some of his origin story, chronicle his career path, and teach us how to be like him. Then finally, we did the Mike, Mike, and Oscars - our award show for the film year 2018. This year, we had you come up with many of the categories, and you did not disappoint. As always, let us know what you think. Who would you nominate & pick? Let us know! We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you listen to podcasts. When reality sucks, keep watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, & Oscar!

Johnny Joey Jones was a Staff Sergeant in the Marines. While in, he requested a lateral move into the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialty and in 2010 was deployed with his unit to the Helmand Province of Afghanistan to disarm the Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s) used by the Taliban. While in country, Joey disarmed over 85 IEDs and disposed of several thousands of pounds of unknown bulk explosives. In August 2010, not long after his arrival, Joey’s deployment was abruptly ended when he stepped on an IED while conducting EOD procedures, losing both legs above the knee. He is now the Chief Operating Officer at Boot Campaign, a non-profit, and continues to give back his time to help fellow veterans. We were in awe of Joey and his story and we can't wait to hear about the next chapter of his life.

So, it's Black Friday as this episode goes live and, if you live in the United State,s chances are you are one of the thousands of people standing in line at three in the morning waiting for a chance to buy a television for $50 cheaper than you would normally be able to buy it. Well, have no fear because Scott and Mike are here with another fantastic episode of "Tales"! (If you live outside the US it is probably another Friday, in which case, HEY THERE'S A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF TALES FOR YOU!) Anyway, this time out the guys talk about the books that came out with a December 1984 cover date. In All-Star Squadron #40, the troubles in Detroit come to a head with Amazing Man finally having it out with The Real American while Johnny desperately wants a cup of coffee. Then, in Infinity Inc. #9, Jade faces off against the man she believes is her father...GREEN LANTERN. E-mails are read and Scott and Mike lead you through another Crisis Counseling session.
Things are somewhat back to normal this week as Scott and Mike once again have control of their posts here at the main page and can stop worrying about super-villains hacking the Libsyn account. For now... Anywho, this week the guys talk about All-Star Squadron #23, which is the first appearance of the truly awesome Amazing-Man! A lot of the discussion centers around A-Man and why he is so cool, but Mike and Scott also discuss their thoughts on Dr. Fate, his whiny wife Inza, and why Deathbolt has such a thing for the Ultra-Humanite. They also talk about something that could possibly be considered... offensive (but that was not the intent of the conversation, so please keep that in mind for that section of the show). There is also late breaking news regarding All-Star Squadron and collected editions, so keep an ear out for that too. Next time: Batman (and Robin) return in All-Star Squadron #24!Feedback for this show can be sent to: talesofthejsa@gmail.comTwo True Freaks! is a proud member of BOTH the Comics Podcast Network (http://www.comicspodcasts.com/) and the League of Comic Book Podcasts (http://www.comicbooknoise.com/league/)!! Greetings to the puny minded denziens of this thing you call the Internet. My name is the Ultra Humanite and I am the most awesome villain to ever exist. You will all kneel before me and my vast criminal mind! I now posses the Powerstone and... Hey, hey, hey! Stop staring at my chest! Eyes up here, buddy. I may have the bodacious body of a forties era actress (thin waste, big hips, stacked like a brick outhouse) but I am all man in the cranium. So you just keep those dirty thoughts to yourself because I am not interested. ANYWAY... Apparently this is the site that hosts a radio program (or a podcast as you future people call it) that is all about the Justice Society hosted by two gentlemen (and I use the term loosely) named Scott and Michael. After listening to the latest episode I realized that they were talking about me during their discussion of All-Star Squadron #22 and I cannot let their insults go unchallenged. It is true that they discuss how Deathbolt and I soundly defeated Superman and the rest of the All-Stars but they also have the gall to mock me and my criminal genius. Sure I started out my bad guy career forming the Cab Protection League where I tried to force other cab companies out of business but that was just step one in a long and involved plan to take over the world. First the cabbies...then planet Earth! It is as simple as that. I guess Michael and Scott cannot understand such things, especially since they spend most of the episode talking about comic book movies of the past few years and what problems they have had with them. They also discuss how Superman just doesn't get the respect he deserves, which is just wrong. ONE DAY I SHALL HAVE MY REVENGE! UNTIL THEN, LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AND THEN WRITE IN ABOUT HOW YOU AGREE WITH ME THAT I AM AWESOME AND THEY ARE SILLY!
