It's great when Spider-Man or Captain America is Black — while their story is being told. But what happens to that character when the powers upstairs want to reintroduce the classic, more established white character? Has enough been done to let the Sam Wilsons and Miles Moraleses of the world stand on their own without getting lost in the shuffle? We came to that discussion through reading comics, of course! Will took on Fantastic Four: Life Story, Captain America: Symbol of Truth vol 1: Homeland, Captain Marvel vol 8: The Trials, and Miles Morales vol 8: Empire of the Spider. Steve handled the Warren Ellis-lead relaunch of three X-Men titles, dubbed Counter-X, with Generation X vol 1 #63-66, X-Force vol 1 #102-105, and X-Man #63-66. And we both continued our journey in the Dreaming with Sandman #29-31.

Growing up as a Black kid, being a superhero was a part of daily imaginary games. However, we never saw them on television or in movies. Well, all of that is changing. We see more Black Superheroes on the big and small screens. The latest addition to the list is Marcus Nelson. While we can't tell you the name of the movie that he is in, we can tell you that it's a DC Comics Film. We talked to Marcus about how he found his "cape" and wore it proudly. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/suavvsessions/message

In this episode, Wellington is joined by special guests Maurice Hendricks and Isaiah Barthelus, two good friends of the show, to analyze and review Drake's new surprise album and fully dance album Honestly, Nevermind. They dive into how this album sounded drastically different sonically and highlight how Drake was wanting to show his range and venture into a new arena and sphere. They also review Logic's album Vinyl Days and discuss how underrated of a rapper he's been for the last few years and give high praise to some of the features including Russ and The Game. They also review Westside Boogie's Black Superheroes album, analyze the improvements that could have been made later in the project and review REASON's latest single “It is What It Is” featuring Jay Rock. In the second half, Wellington and Maurice review New Jack City, the 1991 crime thriller starring Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, Allen Payne and Chris Rock. They dive into how this was a very vintage New York City-based crime drama and how it has a good, cultural look in how the drug empire emerged in big cities. They also discuss the classic character Nino Brown, how Wesley Snipes fit the role perfectly and American Gangster later benefiting from a film like this and implementing different components into it.
