WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS EPISODE ABOUT LAW FIRM BANKING AND FINANCIAL STRATEGY Most lawyers master the practice of law but struggle with the business side. From managing cash flow to protecting client funds from cybercrime, the financial realities of running a law firm present challenges most lawyers were never trained to handle. Ken Vrana works specifically with law firms to help them make smarter financial decisions and avoid common pitfalls. He sees firsthand how smaller firms are often targeted by fraudsters because they lack the robust protection systems of larger firms, and how many firms leave money on the table by not optimizing their payment processes or banking relationships. From startup firms hanging their shingle to established practices pursuing growth through mergers, Ken shares practical insights on choosing the right banking partners, setting up proper fraud protection, and why the relationship with your banker might be more important than you think. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge podcast, Elise Holtzman speaks with Ken about protecting your firm's funds, streamlining cash flow, and why treating your banker as a trusted advisor could be one of the smartest business decisions you make. 1:51 - Banking challenges facing large and smaller firms 6:23 - The benefits of using specialized legal banking over a local bank branch 9:43 - Common mistakes by law firms in their banking and financial management choices 14:52 - Guidance for new law firms to start on a solid footing with legal banking 19:21 - Why legal banks like Juris see startup firms as valuable clients 21:56 - Considerations for law firms pursuing growth 23:53 - Culture mismatches as a leading cause of merger failures  27:17 - Players who should be involved in your firm's growth or merger 29:53 - Reasons for having multiple banking relationships 32:19 - The importance of regularly re-evaluating if a banking relationship is a good fit  35:40 - Large firms' lack of immunity to financial management problems, despite having more resources 37:24 - The value of banking relationships and understanding their importance MENTIONED IN BANKING AND FINANCIAL STRATEGY FOR LAW FIRMS THAT WANT TO GROW Connect with Ken on LinkedIn Western Alliance Bank | LinkedIn Get connected with the coaching team: hello@thelawyersedge.com The Lawyer's Edge SPONSOR FOR THIS EPISODE… Today's episode is brought to you by the Ignite Women's Business Development Accelerator, a 9-month business development program created BY women lawyers for women lawyers. Biela vrana Milan Olekšák: Pytliak na čele TANAPu vystihuje vedenie rezortu, odbornosť nepotrebujú, verejný záujem nevidia (podcast)„Mám pocit, že pri moci máme ľudí, ktorí si riešia osobné traumy. Je neskutočné, že niečo také vôbec pripustíme a nie sme v uliciach“, hovorí Milan Olekšák, odvolaný šéf Národného parku Slovenský kras a čerstvý nositeľ ocenenie Biela vrana.Národný park Slovenský kras previedol náročným procesom zonácie, na jeho konci so štvrtinou územia v kategórii bezzásahová a teda viac chránená a ponechaná zákonom prírody. Do života uviedol reformu národných parkov. Príde mi to úplne logické. Mne to príde úplne logické, pretože politici, ktorí vykonávajú výkonnú moc, slúžia všetkým občanom a mali by ísť príkladom. To znamená naozaj ten šok z tretieho štátneho tajomníka, pretože nejde len o štátneho tajomníka. Naviac má právny rámec i procesnú formu.

Príde mi to úplne logické. Mne to príde úplne logické, pretože politici, ktorí vykonávajú výkonnú moc, slúžia všetkým občanom a mali by ísť príkladom. To znamená naozaj ten šok z tretieho štátneho tajomníka, pretože nejde len o štátneho tajomníka. Naviac má právny rámec i procesnú formu.

Steve Yzerman's vision for the future of the Detroit Red Wings took some major steps this week, with the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline culminating in the trade of Tyler Bertuzzi, Jakub Vrana, and Oskar Sundqvist (after already trading Filip Hronek and signing Dylan Larkin & Jake Walman earlier in the week). The only thing that didn't happen was the James Van Riemsdyk trade - JVR, you'll be missed in Motown. In one of the most insane NHL Trade Deadline leadups in NHL history, the Detroit Red Wings were a big part of the festivities: Larkin signing, Hronek traded, Walman extended, Bertuzzi, Vrana & others back on the market - CHAOS Tune in as we start by discussing Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin finally signing his new contract, keeping him in Hockey for 8 years at $8.7 million per season. How will this contract age with trade clauses, buyout options, and salary structure? Was this fair value, did Larkin take a discount, or did Steve Yzerman overpay? What does this mean for Detroit's future down the middle & in the overall rebuild? Enjoy our full contract breakdown as the wait to extend the Red Wings captain finally ends (6:45). Next, some earlier news that Jake Walman also signed a contract extension in Detroit - what does his 3 year, $3.4 million per year deal mean for his future, Detroit's flexibility to trade in the future, Moritz Seider's top line partner, Edvinsson, Johansson, & others (19:20) After a disastrous set of games against Ottawa, we break down how that affected Yzerman's decision-making surrounding the wild card playoff race (amidst a loaded Atlantic and Eastern conference) (27:40), which led into his blockbuster trade moving Filip Hronek to the Vancouver Canucks. We analyze who won the deal, how it compared to the return for Chychrun, whether Yzerman was selling high on Hronek or if the Canucks made a surprise offer, & the options Yzerman has with the New York Islanders' 1st round pick in 2013 (35:30). Next, a broader discussion on what's coming next for the Detroit Red Wings rebuild. Is Yzerman looking for a full breakdown & extension of the rebuild, or a quick reset in which he could pursue players like Parayko, Thomas, Kyrou, or others (45:45)? With Tyler Bertuzzi back on the trade block (especially after the Jeannot trade return), we analyze potential trade partners, returns, & options for him (56:00), as well as other likely trade candidates: Jakub Vrana, Filip Zadina, & even possibly the likes of Sundqvist, Suter, Perron, & others (1:09:40). In addition to discussion Detroit's NHL Trade Deadline possibilities, we take a quick look at the insane trades that have already taken place (1:21:25) & LOTS more before taking your questions during Overtime (1:29:00) - enjoy!
