Kharis is an original native of Mississippi. Shortly after leaving from Hinds Community College, he found himself into a new era of life. Some would call it a place where dreams come true, a city of great adventure, New York City. Although the headline of his departure sounds pleasant, it didn't begin that way. Kharis found himself abstrusely lost in challenges. He did not give up. He stayed faithful and turned a sad story into a brand; a career full of fashion, music, and creative conceptions. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ieshaspeaksreal/message

#Episode 184: How Your Pain And Suffering Can Spark New Business Ventures Your current pains/struggles can be a clue to your next business idea. Why does someone become a healer, psychic medium, or coach? Not too many childhood stories of giving your dolls readings, and setting up your room like a classroom to run psychic medium workshops for all of your stuffed animals. No, this is not the public school classroom. Every single psychic medium, healer, and coach we've connected with has a transformational story on how and why they chose the current field they're in. Someone close passing away. Watching family struggle and struggle themselves growing up. A car accident that makes them realize why they came here. All of the stories are different and unique. Some more dramatic than others. The common denominator is pain/struggle/awakening. Someone's pain/struggle opening up their hearts and souls, so that who they are can come out more fully. We didn't wake up one day and say “we want to be a psychic medium, a coach, run retreats, and help other spiritual entrepreneurs grow their business and life. That happened overtime, and from experiencing our own struggles. Here's part of our story on why we do what we do and how it can benefit YOU. What will help you retire happy? After a long career, are you looking for a retirement life that has more variety and flexibility? And a rich, diverse set of activities and interests that you can build gradually and adjust as you go? Our guest on this retirement podcast is Andy Robin, a retired technology executive who's doing just that. He's joining us to share insights from his book Tapas Life: A Rich and Rewarding Life After Your Long Career. Andy joins us from California. _________________________ Are you ready to discover your new life? Our Design Your New Life group program kicks off on September 24th. It's limited to 10 participants. Learn more here. __________________________ Bio Andrew Robin, known to most as Andy, was born in Chicago and raised in Mexico City. He holds a BA in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Harvard University. He has been happily married to Carole for 35 years, and they have two fine kids, Nick, 33, and Molly, 31. Andy was an entrepreneur with his dad in the computer industry in the early ‘70s in Mexico City (his dad moved the family there from Chicago to pursue an opportunity). He was in the semiconductor industry for 22 years (at Mostek, Monolithic Memories, AMD, and Lattice), mostly in marketing, but also as a general manager, and most recently as VP of New Business Ventures. He was a house dad from 2002 to 2007 until Carole and Andy's youngest went off to college. Today he retains the duties of shopping/cooking, household maintenance, travel planning, and finances. He also plays a lot of classical piano, some golf, enjoyed 6 years on the Board and Executive Committee of his large synagogue (Congregation Beth Am of Los Altos Hills), where he was also co-chair of raising an endowment, was part-time CEO of a promising tech start-up for 6 years (and remains on the Board), is an Executive Coach and Life Coach, serves on the Board of a foundation in Palo Alto and a NYC hedge fund and enjoys day-trips, lectures, and concerts around the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Andy wrote Tapas Life to do some good for others. Andy's wife, Carole Robin, wrote a terrific book for Penguin RandomHouse with her colleague David Bradford: Connect: Building Exceptional Relationships With Family, Friends, and Colleagues. It distills the combined 70 years she and David enjoyed teaching the Interpersonal Dynamics course at Stanford Graduate School of Business. She believes that when more people embrace the learnings in her book, the world will be a better place. __________________________ On a Tapas Life "For those who don't know is it's one of the foods of Spain. It's the concept that instead of having an American style, large porterhouse steak on your plate with some potatoes and a veggie, instead you have a bunch of little dishes, and often times the table orders six or eight little dishes as you go. You order a few more and so on. And so it's almost like a little buffet that you make yourself at your own table. And that's kind of how I think about the Tapas Life. During what I call my long career decades of working in an office, that was my big job. And I probably did that 45 to 60 hours a week for decades. My plate was very full for decades. And now that I'm done with my long career, instead, I like to assemble a number of smaller activities that comprise my life today. It's rich and rewarding. It's tasty and interesting. It's varied and enjoyable. And also one of those Tapas is meaningful. So I'm also doing some good for others on the planet." Examples of a Tapas Life "I've seen others who have done important things about social connection for Tapas. What I write about in the book that I just loved is one couple I interviewed who said that once a month they get together with another couple for a weekend. And they alternate each month. It's one couple's responsibility to figure out, within a three-hour drive,

David is originally from London, but he moved to the United States after studying Film History in college to get involved in the business world. He started out by experimenting with a bunch of different business ideas for a few months as side hustles, and eventually, his business career took off when he founded Uberpong - a company that allows you to use photos to create your own custom ping pong paddles in 30 seconds. The paddles were sold in 30 countries with clients including Coca-Cola, Nike, MTV, Levi's any many more. David told me about how he was able to play ping pong with the LA Dodgers Team and Jimmy Kimmel at an event he hosted. He eventually sold the company in 2017. David is the Co-Founder of Guardia Medical (With Alex Coverdale who was previously on the show) and has just written his first book 'Blow It Up 21 Ways Your Startup Can Shakeup An Industry And Change The World' David is very passionate about startups and education. After attending university in London, when David came to the United States, he noticed how poorly run the education system is. A big goal of his is to figure out a way to make education free here in the U.S. just like it is in London. Support this podcast

Earlier this summer I had a chance to interview Bonin Bough and couldn't be happier to share his story as our first episode of our newest season of The Connections Leadership Series Podcast. Visit our website to find links to listen to it on iTunes, Stitcher and Google Play or listen to it on SoundCloud below. A little bit about Bonin Bough... Bonin is a man of many titles, he's the Host of LeBron James' TV Show on CNBC, Cleveland Hustle, Author of Txt Me: Your Phone Has Changed Your Life. Let’s Talk about It and -- in partnership with Michael Loeb (Co-Founder of Priceline.com) -- has become a leading seed-stage investor in Messaging startups. Prior to all of this, Bonin was the Chief Media & eCommerce Officer (a Title and role he created for himself) at Mondelez where he led global media buying for the $25 Billion + organization. For someone with so many responsibilities, he's surprisingly accessible. You can text him any time at 646-759-1837. Give it a shot. It might just take a little while for him to reply. On Career Management Bonin optimized each step of his career for Title and Span of Control. The money simply followed. Title was incredibly important as it gave Bonin additional weight and influence in the organization. A senior title became a stepping stone to even bigger opportunities at new companies. For example, because he was a Senior Director at Pepsi, he was recruited as a VP by Kraft and was given control of the organizations entire media buying organization. Later, Bonin leveraged this VP title into a C-Suite title he created himself at Mondelez, creating his own seat at the table as the Chief Media & eCommerce Officer at Mondelez. With a senior title came a larger span of control, which was particularly important for two reasons: The CEO has the largest span of control of an organization. If you aspire for that title one day, having a large span of control will give you the required experienced in building a team and trusting others to eventually one day meet the requirements of being a great CEO. When you have a large span of control, you inherently have the ability to make a much larger impact on an organization because of the breadth of resources you have access to. The larger your impact, the more likely you are to be noticed by senior leadership and promoted up the ranks as a result of your great work. Bonin took this a step further by focusing primarily on the "innovation" side of the business as often put him in a position to deliver breakout successes. Like great Rockstars, "you have to produce hits". Bonin had lots of them. On Great Leadership Bonin's mission as a leader was to be a platform for the success of those on his team. In his eyes, success as a leader was for the people on your team to become better than you. He particularly called out key members of his team such as Cynthia Chen (now Managing Director at General Mills China), Laura Henderson (now SVP of Marketing at BuzzFeed) and Farrah Bezner (now Head of New Business Ventures at Mondelez) who have all progressed to making a major impact in their respective organizations.
