Report: Complaints soar as airlines cancel flights, deny refunds

Mark Richardson Arizona News Connection PHOENIX -- A new report shows, despite getting billions of dollars from the federal government under the American Rescue Plan, many airlines continue to interrupt travelers' plans with cancellations and are slow to issue refunds. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, air travel in the U.S. and across the world almost completely stopped. But in recent months, as the airlines begin to add flights, customers are complaining of multiple canceled and delayed flights, denied refunds and customer service failures. Diane Brown, executive director of the Arizona Public Interest Research Group, which issued the report, called it outrageous the airlines took taxpayer funds but refuse to deal fairly with their customers. "The airline industry has been short-staffed, and that has caused consumers to have flight cancellations that often have a rippling effect," Brown explained. Airlines have said their industry was gut-punched by the pandemic, and they are working to get back on track. They blamed air traffic control, inclement weather, computer outages and a lack of available flight crews for stranding or delaying travelers. And consumers have not been shy about telling the U.S. Department of Transportation just how unhappy they are. Between February 2020 and August 2021, Brown noted the number of complaints about airline service increased 460%. And refunds have been hard to come by. "Consumers often prefer to just get their money back, to save it for another trip versus having to use the funds by a certain period of time," Brown pointed out. Brown added travelers need to know their rights and alternatives. "Consumers do have options when it comes to which airline they choose, which airport they may lay over in, and their ability to contact policymakers and urge better protection," Brown emphasized. --- Thanks for listening to the podcast. The growing field of art therapy argues that paintings and sculpture can improve your wellness. Plus a 2017 study showed how just one art therapy session improved participants' mood, and reduced pain and anxiety. A 2014 article suggested art therapy can affect those with Alzheimer's and other dementias.    The World Health Organization's 2019 scoping review on the role of the arts in improving health and wellbeing   INSIGHTS   “When we're patients, we're still people, and we're people who are going through stress and strain.” According to Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld, our healthcare experience can be improved by the presence of art that is beautiful, engaging or thought-provoking. [04:31]   The art on the walls at Medcan has been carefully picked out by Stacy Francis and art consultant Marshall Webb. The pieces were chosen for their potential to provoke attention and create a reaction in the people who see it. “I wanted [clients] to just have a contemplative moment that was not about the next test that they were about to receive,” says Francis. [07:03]   Art therapy is the combination of therapy with the presence or creation of art. Stephen Legari is an art therapist at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. “Art therapy allows people to externalize their experience, enjoy a therapeutic relationship with art and feel supported as they're doing that,” says Legari. [10:36]   When we do things that don't come naturally to us (like art!), we use and connect more neurons in our brains. And that becomes more important as we age, according to Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld. “This is why people get advice about, if you're left handed, use your right hand, [and] if you love crosswords, you should actually try a number puzzle instead,” she says. [13:54]   When we realize we aren't good at a hobby or activity, we tend to move on to something else. But Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld says that “there's good support for the value of developing habits that are about both mastery, and tolerating our absolute mediocrity at something.” [26:24]   Interest in art therapy is growing fast. RxART is a nonprofit organization that commissions artists to transform hospitals and healthcare settings, and its founder Diane Brown has seen the interest first-hand, both from hospitals and from artists. Every RxART project is fully funded by the charity and free to the hospitals. Artists receive small honorariums.  “We don't have problems getting artists to collaborate. Rarely does an artist turn us down,” says Brown. [29:06]

Philip Temple is a living legend and one of New Zealand's great explorers. He made the first ascent of the Carstensz Pyramide in West New Guinea (now known as Papua) back in 1962, which has come to be regarded as the technically most difficult of the 'Seven Summits of the Seven Continents'. During his exploration of the island, Philip was among the last to witness the tool-making rituals of a stone-age culture before it was overtaken by the modern world. He went on to explore a swathe of unmapped central New Guinea Highlands, and he risked his life to recover the human remains from a US aircraft that had crashed on a sheer mountain.Philip is perhaps better known as an author and has written several non-fiction books, novels and even children's books. In this episode, we discuss his adventures in New Guinea and the book, The Last True Explorer, that he wrote about the expedition. It is truly our privilege to share part of Philip's story with you. He wears his achievements lightly and, aside from his own books, he hasn't received much recognition or attention for his remarkable feats.Philip lives in Dunedin with his wife, poet and novelist, Diane Brown. We will endeavour to bring your part 2 with Philip so we can cover his many other expeditions and first ascents.//EPISODE EXTRAS//For more information on Philip and his books, you can visit his website here.//SUPPORT THE SHOW//If you like what we do, please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon. We've set it up so you can choose from:1. You ARE What You Eat and So is Your Dog Dr. Diane Brown, CEO of the http://www.akcchf.org/ (AKC Canine Health Foundation), joins us again to talk about fascinating new research on the “gut-brain axis.” In other words, the microscopic bugs inside the dog’s body are being proven to interact with what’s going on in its brain. From the CHF Newsletter: “The adage “you are what you eat” may be more profound than we ever realized. A growing body of evidence shows a complex system of two-way communication between the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and neurologic system in humans and dogs. The link between GI health and diseases such as multiple sclerosis, autism, and epilepsy has been studied in humans. In fact, patients with celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease have an increased risk of developing epilepsy. Since the community of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract – known as the gut microbiome – plays an important role in GI health, what impact does it have on neurologic disease? AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) funded researchers are exploring the role of this microbiomegut-brain axis in canine epilepsy.” http://www.akcchf.org/educational-resources/library/articles/AKC-CHF-Discoveries-Summer-2019.pdf (http://www.akcchf.org/educational-resources/library/articles/AKC-CHF-Discoveries-Summer-2019.pdf) Gut microbiome “The bacteria that live in the gut have been shown to have importance to both health and disease,” Brown said. CHF research is determining what type of bugs normally live in the gut (literally any part of the digestive system from top to bottom). Which ones of those bugs are pathogens and which ones prevent disease is an enormous topic. Many of us understand, for example, that antibiotics completely change the gut microbiome. But this new research is documenting associations with other disorders, including the impact of bacterial content in the gut and how it is influencing epilepsy and anxiety. Using proprietary probiotics to manage post antibiotic diarrhea is one thing. But Probiotics used over the course of six weeks is showing an impact on anxiety behaviors in dogs, providing a non-drug based treatment for this frequent issue in all dogs. Poop is cool! Researchers speaking at a recent CHF conference even discussed using fecal transplants, delivered as an enema, to transplant healthy flora fecal material thereby improving the health of the dog. AKC Vet at the Junction of Tradition and the New Millennium Dr. Jerry Klein at the AKC Museum of the Dog Jerry Klein, AKC’s Chief Veterinary Officer, is at the junction of tradition and the new millennium. AKC created the position in 2015 to serve as a focal point for outreach to fanciers, veterinarians and the general public. Klein shares his history and journey in purebred dogs. Klein started as a kid in the ‘50s with a “pet store” Wire Fox Terrier that he showed at his local show three years running in the Novice class. “I learned a lot,” Klein said. After observing poor sportsmanship at the show, he noted that “Learning how not to be was as important as learning how to show the dog.” Exhibitor, owner, breeder, judge and veterinarian, Klein brings well-rounded experience to his role. He works with https://puredogtalk.com/raising-support-for-the-k9-reproductive-specialists-of-the-future-pure-dog-talk/ (Diane Brown) at the Canine Health Foundation and with https://puredogtalk.com/mari-beth-oneill-akcs-own-guardian-of-the-galaxy-pure-dog-talk/ (Mari-Beth O’Neil) in her veterinary outreach work, as well as recording “Ask the Expert” episodes for AKC TV. AKC is an organization steeped in tradition, Klein said, that is working hard to bring its message into the new millennium. “The best times are not behind us, but hopefully ahead of us,” Klein said. “We need to think of the future with a positive attitude.” One area that Klein emphasizes is the inclusive nature of the purebred dog community. “I always felt welcome in the dog world,” Klein said. “It’s so inclusive. I knew I was gay from a very early age. I saw dog shows as my way out. We are judged by what we bring to the table. If we breed quality dogs, we’ll be respected.” Klein also noted that veterinary medicine has changed a lot in recent years. “They can do more, but it is more expensive,” Klein said. This leads Klein to advocate strongly for pet insurance. As veterinary medicine parallels the quality of human medicine, we can’t “be stuck with our heads in the ’50s,” he noted. AKC Doubles Your Cancer Research Dollars More than 50 percent of dogs over 10 years old will be diagnosed with cancer. Dr. Diane Brown from AKC Canine Health Foundation wants to change that statistic. AKC has pledged $250,000 in matching funds this year toward research into prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of all cancers in dogs. This enables individuals and clubs who donate to the matching fund to literally double the impact of every dollar. Age is not a disease “Age is not a disease,” Brown said. “There are quality of life issues to consider, but I believe we can get to a point of treating older dogs.” Since people and dogs are affected by the same types of cancers, much of the research being done can be applied in what Brown describes as comparative oncology. Prevention and Detection In the prevention category, some cancer vaccines are a reality today and more are being studied. A melanoma vaccine is on the market now, Brown said. Early detection of cancer saves lives in dogs and in people. Current research is looking at markers circulating in the dog’s system identified in blood samples that indicate increased risk for a specific disease. Investing in personalized medicine is the wave of the future, Brown said. Using immunotherapy that is individualized for each dog is a very real possibility. She added that within five years many of these options will be realistically available. Visit the AKCCHF crew on the west coast at the Beverly Hills Dog Show March 2-3.
