We put the call out for you, our lovely listeners, to join us for a roundtable discussion about New Brunswick politics, this podcast, and our overall direction in 2025. This is our first roundtable where we layout the framework with Shawn Rouse which we hope to have repeat with many of you.
Information Morning Saint John from CBC Radio New Brunswick (Highlights)
The Saint John Tool Library is working on a bit-sized training program that could make a big difference in the construction of affordable housing. Executive director Brent Harris speaks with host Rachel Cave about micro-credentialing and what it could mean for Saint John.
Summary Pastor Brent shares his journey as a preacher and missionary, emphasizing the importance of divine calling, the struggle against rebellion, and the grace of God that offers second chances. He draws parallels from the story of Jonah, encouraging listeners to embrace their calling and respond to God's purpose in their lives, regardless of past failures or excuses. Chapters 00:00 Introduction to the Podcast and Preacher's Journey06:12 The Calling: Understanding Divine Assignments19:50 Rebellion: The Struggle Against God's Call29:09 Second Chances: Embracing God's Grace39:59 Conclusion: Responding to God's CallTakeaways God gives us second chances to fulfill our calling. Divine assignments are initiated by God, not by our own desires. Rebellion against God's call can lead to turmoil in our lives and others. God's grace is greater than our failures and mistakes. We should not let our circumstances or fears prevent us from following God's call. Every pastor should learn how to work with people effectively. God speaks to us during conferences about His plans for our lives. We need to be available for ministry and service to others. The story of Jonah illustrates the importance of obedience to God's call. There are many people who have never heard the gospel, and we are called to reach them. This week we are in the 3rd week of the campaign for the NB 2024 election. Things are in full swing, we've had 2 debates, we've got a peculiar poll from Main Street, and a look at the ad spending on Meta by the different actors in this election. I'm joined once again by the ever-so- charming Shawn Rouse and his amazing baritone voice you all keep commenting about.
We are stoked to bring you this special #NBVOTES2024 pod with Dr. Julia Woodhall-Melnik & Dr. Tobin Leblanc-Haley on the hot topic of housing. These two have been hard at work laying out the facts and realities of the housing system in NB from their academic positions and we are glad we got to slow them down for a minute to talk about this issue and how the parties and leaders stack up.
OK #NBPOLI world this is it. The Writ has officially dropped and we will continue to wrap up some riding predictions as we focus on ridings 20-33. We will not be joined by our Co-Host Joanna Killen any longer because the rules of Rogers broadcasting is that candidates running in the election cannot get "preferred" air time. We get it, but we will miss her as she fights to take the conservative stronghold of Saint John West-Lancaster. Shawn Rouse and Brent Harris will take you on this 4 week whirlwind tour as your hosts and we are looking for new guests to lend some perspective. As always, THANK YOU to our monthly donors who support this podcast. If you appreciate this content and want to support it check out our Patreon account where you can sign up to support us and get more content. Also, Make sure you check out the riding map that our very own Shawn Rouse built so you can keep up to date on the candidates. https://maphub.net/shawnrouse/nbvotes2024
Helen Molesworth is a curator and writer who became widely known for her hit podcast Death of an Artist, about the artist Ana Mendieta, whose husband sculptor Carl Andre was charged then acquitted of her murder in the 1980s. Carl Andre died last week, and Helen has a book of collected art writing out: Open Questions: Thirty years of writing about art.Daniel visits the backyard studio of Olana Janfa. The Ethiopian-Norwegian artist started painting relatively recently but his distinct voice, drawn from his life as a refugee in Norway and migrant in Australia, is humour-filled, popular and incisive.Brent Harris' psychologically-driven artworks are often described as haunting and even ‘brooding'. So, if you haven't ever seen his paintings– would it surprise you to know they're also colourful and cartoonish? More Betty Boop than Edvard Munch's The Scream. He takes producer Rosa Ellen through his studio, in preparation for Brent Harris: Surrender & Catch, on at Tarra Warra Museum of Art.This program first aired Wed 7 Feb 2024
Join us as we do a review of the last few months with friend of the pod Shawn Rouse. As we are just a few weeks away from the likely date that the writ will drop for the 2024 #NBPOLI election, has anything changed? Are the PC's still just as doomed? Is Susan Holt catching fire? Or will the drag of the federal liberals cause Green party candidates to get some nods and expand their seat count to be the party that holds the balance of power? Let's get into it!
Listen in on Artist Brent Harris and Curator Maria Zagala as they walk you through Brent Harris: Surrender and Catch. 0:34 - Foreword 2:05 - First Gallery 10:14 - Second Gallery 13:13 - Third Gallery 19:41 - Fourth Gallery 28:02 - Fifth Gallery 33:06 - Sixth Gallery 39:44 - Seventh Gallery
Brent Harris: Surrender & Catch, the first major monograph of the Aotearoa-born, Melbourne-based artist Brent Harris opens at AGSA.Curated by Maria Zagala and co-presented with Tarra Warra Museum of Art, brings together over 100 paintings, drawings, studies and prints, traversing the artist's practice and stylistic shifts over his career. Brent Harris: Surrender & Catch maps the ways Harris's art has developed over the past four decades, featuring a broad selection of works from 1987 to 2022. Harris's distinctive style, which moves between figuration and abstraction, deploys both humour and the grotesque to examine psychological subject matter as he visualises his complex and contradictory feelings. Indeed, the exhibition title refers to Harris's interest in sociologist Kurt H. Wolff's notion of ‘surrender and catch' as a process for self-analysis and as a method of working.Exhibition dates: 6 July – 20 October 2024. In this segment, we hear from Maria Zagala, who has worked as Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs at the Art Gallery of South Australia since 2006. From 1996 to 2006 she was Assistant Curator of Prints & Drawings at the National Gallery of Victoria. Maria completed her Master of Fine Arts at La Trobe University specializing in life drawing practice in the Italian Renaissance, with extended periods of research in Berlin, London and Florence. Brent Harris, who has been actively exhibiting since the mid-1980s. He is a painter and printmaker who has lived in Melbourne for over forty years. Harris's works are known for their flat space, clean lines and graphic forms, which belie the underlying themes of his work, such as mortality, trauma, eroticism and childhood.
We unfortunately lost Andrea due to some scheduling conflicts for our interview BUT we are back anyway to talk about some of the who's who and what's what in NB politics. We've got Mike Holland's resignation, candidates for the PC nomination in Charlotte County, a legacy Liberal running against the blue dragon Blaine Higgs, and an update on our GMIST work in the community.
This week the original 2 are back to discuss some of the polling numbers for the parties in May, fundraising numbers, as well as about candidates running for the 2024 election. We've got a Tik Tok star to talk about as well as the riding of Arcadia-Butternut Valley-Maple Hills.
So Sorry we missed a week #NBPOLI World. We are back this week with an encore presentation of our conversation with former Alberta Cabinet Minister & best selling author Doug Griffiths to speak about Alberta politics and the cross over with New Brunswick. It's an important conversation that meant a lot to us so we are playing it one more time as we work hard to nail down interview dates with a couple of great guests.
Big-name conceptual artist - four words you don't often hear together. But Jeremy Deller is one - he's a household name in Britain, but a few years back he sparked controversy here when he made giant wax candles of Rupert Murdoch and son Lachlan, and let them burn. The Turner Prize-winning artist also orchestrates mass public spectacles that bridge the worlds of contemporary art and pop culture.Daniel catches up with Archibald Prize winner Laura Jones, who painted author Tim Winton. Painter and sitter share a passion for WA's Ningaloo reef and its survival amid climate crisis. Unusually, Laura's own portrait is also on display – she entered it in the concurrent Sulman Prize, on at the Art Gallery of NSW. Brent Harris' psychologically-driven artworks are often described as haunting and even ‘brooding'. So, if you haven't ever seen his paintings– would it surprise you to know they're also colourful and cartoonish? More Betty Boop than Edvard Munch's The Scream. He takes producer Rosa Ellen through his studio, in preparation for his survey show, which is soon to tour the Art Gallery of South Australia.

This week we are joined by Shawn Rouse once again who is bringing us an updated election map! We will be diving into the federal situation and talk about how Justin Trudeau, Susan Holt, Blaine Higgs, and Pierre Poilievre dovetail in our upcoming provincial election. After that, we will be moving into the riding of Fredericton North to speak about the David Coon effect on that riding and discuss the level of support that exists for Luke Randall who left the Greens to join the Liberals. We will also discuss Anthea Plummer who is there running for the Greens, Jill Green the PC Minister who is going to run again under the embattled Blaine Higgs, and the People's Alliance of NB party.

City staffer Ben Purinton and Councillors Barry Ogden and Brent Harris on plans to make vacant houses livable.
This week we will take a look at two emerging scandals in New Brunswick politics. On the one hand we have Tammy Scott-Wallace under major fire for what appears to be overt nepotism and ritzy trips to places for "tourism" networking in Stonehenge and Versaille. At the same time we have Green MLA Kevin Arsenau saying the Liberals are engaging in unethical practices during the leadership race which featured people signing up seniors living in care homes to vote without their permission. Indeed his grandmother was signed up for the Liberal leadership convention. We will break it down along with all of the political analysis from two young bucks you could hope for.
This week on the pod we are going to get on the road and feature a guest we've had on the podcast before. Carl Killen (Former MLA) has been a returning officer in 2020 and is now once again back in the trenches of the democratic process. We are going to be talking with him about his experience as a returning officer and what that process looks like. From there we will pivot hard to the right as we dive into a response to the Curse of Politics political panel on their take on the upcoming New Brunswick election.
The Saint John Tool Library has been running a pilot project for the last year, called the Fundy Men's Shed. The idea is to provide a space for men to connect with one another and find community. The pilot has been such a success that the project will officially launch tomorrow. We'll speak to Brent Harris about it.
This week we are definitely a little bit cynical as we rage against the rage farming that is happening. We start with a review of the polling data that is coming out of Narrative Research, move on to a discussion on the current offerings that the Liberals, PCs, and Greens are putting toward the public, and end with a discussion on Blaine Higg's affordability measures.
This week we sit down with 4 time guest Shawn Rouse to discuss the latest in NB Politics and what Brent dropped on Twitter in regards to a lawsuit brought against Brent and Jo for this podcast. This podcast DOES NOT represent the views of those on Saint John City Council. The opinions and discussion are the independent views of Brent Harris and Joanna Killen. Democracy is at risk and we are opening up about it.
This week we dive into another crises affecting us all; food. We have all witnessed the price of food skyrocketing and in recent memory saw empty shelves during the pandemic as the fragility of our global supply chains became all too visible. We will dive into this mess with someone who has made it their mission to solve the lack of healthy food that people have in Canada and the United States.

"Bleav in Steelers" host Mark Bergin made an appearance Thursday night on WBAL with host Brent Harris to discuss the Week 18 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens. Bergin outlines the Steelers' path to the playoffs. The guys also discuss Mike Tomlin's 17-year tenure as head coach of the Steelers. Tomlin has never had a season below .500. However, Tomlin's offenses have struggled in recent years. The Steelers haven't won a playoff game since January 2017. Mason Rudolph is due to make his third start of the season for the Steelers. Bergin discusses how Rudolph has developed a connection with George Pickens. Bergin also shares his thoughts on the rumors Kenny Pickett refused to be the Steelers' backup in the Week 17 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He discusses how Tomlin handled the quarterback position between Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky when Pickett was out for several weeks with an ankle injury. Bergin also shares why thinks the Steelers will win with quarterback Lamar Jackson and several Ravens players resting. The Ravens have already secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC North. Saint John Coun. Brent Harris has been the victim of theft himself and joined us to talk about thefts in uptown Saint John.
In this episode, our frequent panel member Shawn Rouse is back to help analyze, digest, and deliberate on 5 stories currently hot topics in New Brunswick politics. The emerging pension issue with CUPE and the PC Governments betrayal of the negotiated contracts, homelessness across NB and Minister Kris Austin's comments on the "leftist agenda", The Aim Recycling Report is out, new polls are out, and we've got Shawn's take on the possibility of change with a provincial Liberal government. We will break down the fumbles that are happening on Steve Outhouse's watch, comment on the parties positions, and more.
This week we do a deep dive with Better Streets founder Tony Stortz. Tony has been on a mission to support communities in developing plans and initiatives to help address the housing crises in our communities. In this episode, we will dive into the realities of the unhoused, politicians, NYMBIs, and talk about a path forward for supporting the unhoused in Canada.
This week we are going to have to soldier on without Joanna Killen who is feeling under the weather and doing her damnedest to recover so she can get back and let you all know what she really thinks about the NB political landscape. For now, We've asked former guest Shawn Rouse and frequent listener and #nbpoli politico Just Wiswell to regale us with all the "coulda, woulda, shoulda's" that is the reality of the PC government's interactions with New Brunswickers. Another week has come and gone and no election has been called, but the threat is still there.
We are going to get beyond the political calculus and election chatter this week to dive into some of the frontline issues affecting New Brunswickers. There is a lot of noise out there and by the sound of some of it, you would think most folks in NB are concerned about policies guiding our teachers, reducing our debt, or gun rights. We know that isn't true and so this week we have a great chat with friend of the podcast Katie Herrington who has been working in community development and brings a political science perspective as well.
Surprises all around NB, no election has been called. That's right, Premier Higgs had us all so convinced there would be an election that even Elections NB was fooled into spending tax payer dollars to begin setting up returning offices. So what does it mean and where are we going? It looks like Blaine read the tea leaves on some recent results in Manitoba and/or some internal polling. What does it mean for the Liberals? Frustration. Let's talk about it.
This morning on The Bat Around, the guys discuss the loss to the Mariners and the leasing situation of Camden Yards. Stan "the fan" Charles joins the program at 10:25 to give his opinion on Felix Bautista and everything O's. Take to Rake and more this morning on The Bat Around!

USModernist Radio goes to Palm Springs each February for the incredibly popular Modernism Week. It’s a fascinating array of sunshine, architecture, lectures, parties, tours, exhibits, and you can even order martinis for breakfast. Yes, you can do that anywhere but you'll feel glamorous in Palm Springs. USModernist Radio's George Smart was there with keynote speakers and other special guests who make Modernism Week a blast. The Kaufmann House is one of the most famous residences in Palm Springs. Designed by Richard Neutra, it passed through a succession of owners and unfortunate renovations until Brent and Beth Harris brought it back to its original glory. George talks about the house and it's journey from the past into the future with Brent Harris in a rare visit, poolside at the Kaufmann House. Hugh Kaptur is the last living major mid-century modern architect in Palm Springs. He's the Obiwan of Modernism, the last of the Jedi. Alongside other celebrated Palm Springs architects, such as E. Stewart Williams, Donald Wexler, Bill Cody, John Porter Clark, and Albert Frey, Kaptur created the Modernist vibe that Palm Springs is famous for, from hotels to fire stations to apartment complexes to houses. From the 1950's through today, he's been turning out head-turning award-winning architecture. Kaptur has a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. He was featured in the documentary Quiet Elegance.
Brent Harris, chief technology officer at Calgary-based Eguana Technologies, speaks about the company's growing proficiency in the emerging solar power and battery storage field.

The Wild West podcast produced by Mike King is proud to present the story of Ormand W. Write narrated by Brent Harris of Boot Hill Museum. Reverend Wright was born in Acworth, New Hampshire in 1850, arrived in Dodge City in early 1877 at the age of 26. Though he had graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York in 1873, he was not ordained when he got to Dodge. Rev. Wright stayed in Dodge City as Presbyterian pastor until 1882, when he finally “burned out” and was placed in a private institution for health reasons. Within a couple of years, he recovered and continued his ministry in Barnegat, New Jersey for thirty years. He died around 1936 at the age of 86. A summary of Ormond Wright’s life is narrated by Brad Smalley at the end of this podcast.
