For our first documentary, we talk about The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened. For those who don't know, an adaptation of The Death of Superman story called Superman Lives was supposed to be directed by Tim Burton and feature Nicolas Cage, but after a long and torturous production, the plug was pulled. This documentary goes into the movie's development process, featuring interviews with the crew and never-before-seen footage. And one thing is for certain: the movie would have been a trainwreck, but one that we wish we could have seen!
Ah, what could have been. Did you know that we were close to a 1990s Superman movie? Did you know that it would have saw Nicolas Cage, of all people, taking on the cape of the Man of Steel? The movie would have brought the famous story line of The Death of Superman to life. It would have given us our first live action version of Brainac and Doomsday respectively. To make it even crazier, it would have been directed by Batman director, himself, Mr. Tim Burton. In this episode of The Cage Corner Podcast, we discuss the documentary, The Death of Superman Lives, What Happened? This episode goes as in-depth as the movies does. Nineteen years. That's how long it took for Superman to triumphantly come back to theaters. Yet just as quickly as he flew onto the screen, he was gone faster than a speeding bullet—a victim of low receipts and a distinct lack of enthusiasm for this movie's ponderous take on the "Big Blue Boy Scout." Though decently reviewed—75% on Rotten Tomatoes with a Metascore of 72—and laden with talent (a portion of it admittedly troubled, even if we didn't quite know it at the time), Superman Returns was not the home run the studio had hoped. It barely broke even. With a final production cost of $223 million, another $100 million in marketing, and the ugly baggage of the aborted development of Superman Lives, its $391 million dollars in worldwide gross just didn't cut it. Money aside, this is not a poor film. Far from it, in fact. And it truly gets Superman, delivering quintessential moments of heroism that define what type of character he is. In typing that, I still must acknowledge that it wasn't enough. The plodding pace of Returns turned some viewers off. The distinct lack of action—a far cry from what was to come—failed to ignite the fervor some would expect after the character's long hiatus. Thus, it has the dubious distinction of again killing the franchise. While Batman flourished in the Dark Knight Trilogy, Superman floundered. He'd be sidelined for another seven, brutal years. And when he finally showed his face, he'd again been repackaged. That, unfortunately, is this movie's legacy. What began with hope and optimism—a promised revival of all we'd loved about Richard Donnor's version—ended with disappointment. The studio was unwilling to give this incarnation another opportunity. I will always lament that. But, hey, we're here to have a good time; so sit back, grab a Stone Brewing's Enjoy by July 4th, 2019 Unfiltered IPA, prepare to leap a tall building in a single bound, and enjoy, as I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. In this very special episode in our "Movies About Making Movies" month, Kyle and Trevor review Jon Schepp's terrific documentary about the Tim Burton Superman film that never was, The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened (2015)! Comprised of interviews with the producers and pre-production that tirelessly worked on Superman Lives prior to it's abrupt cancellation, and featuring a wealth of behind the scenes test footage and concept art, the documentary serves as the definitive look at what could have been a truly unique superhero film.
This week Jon and Jake talk about their first documentary. An LTTS first. "The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened?" is a film about a film that never was. Is that meta enough? There was an idea... for a Superman movie to capatalize on a popular comic book where Superman dies in the 90's. And just as the boots were getting put on, the cape had to be hung up. No Superman movie. This documentary goes to the people responsible for every facet of the film, good and bad. Do you wish this movie was made? We sure do. Have a listen.

Nur was geschah dann? Denis und Walandi gehen auf die Dokumentation "The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?" ein. Sie gehen darauf ein, was einen Blockbuster ausmacht. Welcher Superman-Film oder -Serie ist die Beste? Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth from 1992. Everybody's favorite Cenobite Pinhead (Doug Bradley) is trapped in the Pillar of Souls. After a nightclub owner purchases the pillar, investigative reporter Joey Summerskill (Terry Farrell) starts to research the occult object. Lo and behold, Pinhead is revived with a mostly new army of Cenobites: Barbie (Peter Atkins), Camerahead (Ken Carpenter), CD (Eric Willhelm), Chatterer (Robert Hammond), and Pistonhead (Kevin Bernhardt). Can Joey stop him from causing the titular hell on earth? Mat gabs about the recent documentary from Jon Schnepp, The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?. An in-depth look at a Superman movie we were closing to getting in the late 1990s, this detailed docu shows concept art, rehearsal footage, and costume tests from what could have been an interest take on Supes starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Tim Burton. Thrasher yammers on about the just cancelled super-hero themed workplace sitcom Powerless and feels it could have been the start of something great. EPISODE 86-- The crew handles their first documentary in the form of "Death of Superman Lives," which concerns itself with one of the many Superman-related cinematic disasters. Unlike most of the other Superman cinematic disasters, this one didn't actually come to the big screen. Tim Burton, Nic Cage, Kevin Smith. What could go wrong? Everything. Every. Thing. Then we rap about The Last Emperor, Stranger Things, and The Night Of. Probably some other stuff. I don't know listen to it.Follow us on Twitter @goldenagecruz and @kislingtwits. This week the guys talk to Eisner Award Winning Writer John Layman, and discuss his newest series from Dark Horse Comics "Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens" which comes out July 27th. Nick and James also discuss Pokémon GO taking over the world, review the documentary "Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?," and more!
Come back with us to a time when newspapers had the death of Superman on the front page (beneath the fold) and Nicolas Cage was prime non-skullfaced hero potential with a documentary about what could have been, The Death of Superman Lives. Is it possible that Superman Lives would've been a better movie than the ones we got? What is it about Kevin Spacey that makes everyone want to cast him as Lex Luthor? Are we the only ones okay with a movie in which Superman fights a giant space spider? How many people not in this movie have put Tim Burton in a headlock? And hey, now that you've heard the episode, you should check out the documentary if you haven't already! You can pick it up in the format of your choice right here. It's a real labour of love on the part of director Jon Schnepp, so head over there and help support it!

Such a treat to talk to artists Brand Peters and Kathie Olivas about their kickstarter for their exciting stop motion film based upon the world of their toy, Calliope Jackalope. Shout out to these awesome creators on the Twitter @KathieOlivas and @BrandtPeters and check out their wares on the Circus Posterus website: http://www.circusposterus.com/ And be sure to check out all the fare on the Up Late Network, of which Crowdfinders is a most proud, most recent, member. From the Press Release: Just in time for Halloween comes a Kickstarter campaign for a spooky stop-motion film, Calliope, that brings together all-star creators from the world of designer toys (Circus Posterus’ toy designers Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters), stop-motion innovator and Annie Awards Special Achievement recipient Martin Meunier (Coraline) and filmmaker Jon Schnepp (The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened). Based on Olivas’ classic toy character Calliope Jackalope, Calliope is a post-apocalyptic, fantasy adventure about an other-worldly girl who’s unaware that she’s actually Pestilence, one of the four horseman of the apocalypse. If funded through the now live Kickstarter campaign, Calliope will be written and co-directed by Meunier, Olivas and Peters, executive produced by Schnepp and feature artisans, animators, and fabricators that have worked on stop-motion features including The Nightmare Before Christmas. Calliope is planned as an 8-10 minute stop-motion short film and is the most ambitious project yet from the husband and wife creative team of Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters; it will be the first production from Circus Posterus Films, the couple’s New Mexico-based arts collective Circus Posterus.
Sean, Greg, and Lynn talk about the documentary "The Death of Superman Lives - What Happened?", the history of Fantastic Four movies, Star Wars, Star Trek, the myth-building rules of storytelling, developing canon through creative writing, Idris Elba, the Muppets, and Doctor Who! That's a lot of ground to cover, to be such a short episode.

In this week's ball-amnesia-inducing episode, Magnus recounts his difficulties accepting Peter David's ongoing Supergirl series from 1996. David wrought many changes to the character, not least of which was placing her into more of a supernatural horror type of setting. In point of fact, Linda's arc starts off on a note that eerily and spookily reminded Magnus of a Dream Theater song so the episode begins with a slightly different introduction than usual. In any event, the comics being discussed this week are Supergirl #01-#03 written by the aforementioned Peter David, penciled by a pre-Sucky Origin Gary Frank and inked by Cam Smith. What a pleasant nightmare! Remember a few weeks ago when Tom Panarese guest starred on the Final Night episode and it was mentioned that Supergirl #03 was being intentionally left out of the discussion? This is why! This relates to the megaseries about women in comics, cleverly titled (wait for it!) Women in Comics. As a matter of fact, the Women in Comics series is nearly finished! But comics about female characters are what are on the docket now and next week. As to this week's subject matter, were the changes Peter David introduced worth it? Does Gary Frank's Vertigo-lite style fit better with Supergirl than his later work on Superman? Wouldn't answering those questions here defeat the purpose of listening to the show? For those determined to ruin the Internet for everyone else by perpetuating click-bait on Facebook, "Magnus said *WHAT* about Peter David when Supergirl first got started?" But that's not all! In the second segment Magnus shares his thoughts concerning Jon Schnepp's the Death of Superman Lives- What Happened and how strange it is that a movie that never existed somehow has DVD extras. But there's more to His Excellency's comments than just that! So listen up! Because of the nonstop assault of awesome in this show, unfortunately there was just no time for listener feedback this week. But don't let that get you down! You can still offer your feeble effort at tribute! You humble serfs are always welcome to kiss your benevolent leader's ring. This week the boys of HMP look back not a comic book movie but rather a comic book movie that never was. In the mid 90′s ole Superman was not doing so hot. So talented folks like Kevin Smith and Tim Burton were brought about to try to resurrect this fallen cinema icon. But they would have their work cut out for them with not only the production itself but also by those trying to help them make it. Was Superman Lives the Superman movie we should be angry we never got or should we thank or lucky stars it never got made? We open up the show, however, with a bit of news from the San Diego Comic Con International. Heroes and Villains Doomsday Episode referenced in the show. This week on High-Dere, Ian & Joe discuss how art is made, with the most honest of intentions. After starting the show with Maddie, they wonder how would be the most enjoyable way to demolish a building, given a blank check to do so. They talk about the documentary “The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?”, the bizarre notion of a Nicolas Cage Superman, and the Kevin Smith Q&A afterward. Then they move to people, and how generations have changed. People almost need someone now that has a Robin Hood complex, like Guy Fawkes. And where the hell did bullshit banking and ATM fees come from? Then Joe tells us about his weekend in the studio, tracking drums for some new Awake or Sleeping music with Jeff Peters, James Gabbie and Benjamin Rice at Pie Studios. He is amazed at the process of putting together a song, getting it recorded and produced, but he admits that he misses the camaraderie of playing together as a group and feeding off each other’s energies. The challenge now is promoting, which leads Ian to wonder why an artist should have to take on that role as well as his artist role. They then move into an improv session of the ElfTree Podcast Network Elevator Pitches, touch briefly on religious violence in Ian’s hometown, and then stumble into our 34th ending, while encouraging people to reach out and say hi! All on this week’s episode of High-Dere.

Hot off the heels of Stan Lee's Comikaze, Jon Schnepp drops in to Geekscape to talk about the status of his Kickstarted documentary 'The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?' and his new project 'Unicrom: The Unicorn Barbarian', which is a project so amazing you'll just have to check it out for yourself! Also, my parents sit in as guest co-hosts and we talk about writing, how video games as a kid almost drove them crazy and what comic books to read. PLUS! Jon and I talk about the amazing possibilities of Marvel's newly announced Netflix series based on Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and The Defenders!
Not even a root canal could prevent Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse, Venture Bros., Upright Citizens Brigade) from joining the boys in the studio to talk about all manner of factoids, ranging from the accidental discovery of aspartame to the secret origins of Star Trek's Transporter to his forthcoming documentary, The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened?, and much more.
Throughout the past 20-something years, there have been so many superhero projects that started getting developed before ending up in development limbo and of them was "Superman Lives" - the project that had a script written by Kevin Smith before Nicholas Cage, who would have starred as the Man of Steel and would have been directed by Tim Burton, who had Smith's script re-written, both came on board. There has been so many questions throughout the years like "A giant spider?", "How?", "Why?" but most importantly, "What happened?" Filmmaker Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse, Grimm Fairy Tales) is now directing a documentary called, The Death of "Superman Lives", What Happened?, which will explore what happened to that Superman project and ATA's Andy Behbakht got to talk with the director about his documentary at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. We would like to thank Mr. Schnepp for taking time to talk to us and if you are interested in following his project: check out the Kickstarter page, the project's Facebook page as well as follow him on Twitter @JonSchnepp.
