Amber Runyon is a speaker, nurse, candle maker, social entrepreneur, founder, and visionary of Eleventh Candle Co. Amber began her journey as a nurse and went on to do medical missions across the world. While in Ethiopia, she witnessed two young girls being sold into human trafficking in broad daylight. In this moment she realized she didn’t want to live in a world where little boys and girls could be bought and sold. In 2015 Amber founded her non-profit Legacy and Eleventh Candle Co. with the mission to redeem, restore, empower and equip those vulnerable to human trafficking, abuse, exploitation and addiction.    Three years later, the organization continues to welcome women with employment, trauma informed counseling and a safe place to be themselves. Amber has been featured in many magazines, articles and other media. In August of 2018 she gave a TedTalk in Hilliard, Ohio. Amber lives in Worthington, Ohio with her son and two dogs.

About Amber: Amber Runyon is a speaker, nurse, candle maker, and social entrepreneur. She is the visionary behind the non-profit, Legacy, and it’s for-profit counterpart, Eleventh Candle Co. While working medical missions in Ethiopia as a nurse, Amber watched two young girls get sold into sex trafficking in broad daylight, and that moment changed her. It is what led her to found Legacy and Eleventh Candle, with the mission to redeem, restore, empower and equip those who are vulnerable to human trafficking, abuse, exploitation and addiction.   Places to Find Amber: Eleventh Candle Co. – https://eleventhcandleco.com/ (website) Legacy’s https://www.facebook.com/givetolegacy/ (page) on Facebook Amber’s https://eleventhcandleco.com/blogs/amber-runyon (Blog) On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/ambernrunyon/ (@ambernrunyon)   Show Notes: [3:00] minute: What was life like for you growing up, and what eventually led you to nursing? Grew up in foster care. A billboard leads to Nursing school. 4:00 minute: Tell me how the medical missions in Ethiopia started? She always wanted to give back, and it seemed like international medicine was the best opportunity for her. Has done trips in Haiti, Honduras, and throughout Africa. [4:40] minute: How do you think your experience in foster care growing up played a piece in your drive to give back? Agreement with the Universe to do good. [5:00] minute: For those who don’t know, could you paint a picture of what life is like in a place like Ethiopia that you worked? It is utter poverty everywhere, and that can be shocking. Intentional while there to learn how everyone lives. Have to immerse yourself in the culture to even get a small understanding. The juxtaposition between there and getting back to the states each time can be jarring. [7:20] minute: Tell me more about doing nursing there, what were those missions like, what were you doing? Started in short-term mission trips, but learned how ineffective they really are and now avoids them. Long-term sustainable care is her passion now. Working with local hospitals to do training and bringing in specialists who could teach the local doctors so that when they left the work could continue. [9:15] minute: You see so many people take a mission trip that seems like it is more a feel good trip for the person rather than actually beneficial for the people they are going to help, what advice would you have for someone planning a trip like that? One trip to Ethiopia changed her view and convinced her the practices all needed to focus on sustainability. Shifted to how to build up the community and help them be less dependent on our foreign aid. The education works two ways. [12:55] minute: You’ve mentioned micro-financing, can you explain what that is and how it works? Funded a co-op that would allocate small funds to women who had a business idea. Tells the story of an entrepreneur who created a laundry service and quickly paid her loan back and is now employing others in the community. Defines and explains the community-oriented nature of it. [15:50] minute: Tell me about this life altering experience you had in seeing two young girls get sold into slavery right in front of you? What exactly happened, how did it make you feel? While riding through a village her eyes caught a man leading two little girls who were blindfolded, and he was taking them to be sold. Her translator had to tell her what was happening, and she couldn’t believe it. Sadly, it’s a very common practice that is much more out in the open there. The same thing happens here in the United States, it is just more hidden from us. [19:40] minute: You knew you wanted to do something about this, so what were your first steps towards action? Committed to Ethiopia but wanted to help in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio as well. Wanted to create the generation that went...

On this episode of She Rises, host Giovanna Capozza interviews Amber Runyon, candlemaker and storyteller. She founded Legacy and Eleventh Candle Co. to bring hope to women in the U.S. and Ethiopia. Amber saw women in Ethiopia being sold to brothels in broad daylight. How do we go from raped to redeemed and move women to a place of wellness? Discuss how you can make a pledge to help victims and survivors. Share the story of the entrepreneurial side of your business. Amber discusses the importance of mentoring and being mentored. They’ve built a team and taken their business from $250 to over $1 million in revenue. Amber now has the ability to know that if she’s not healthy the company isn’t healthy. What Amber is learning and still has to practice daily it’s that one is enough. Discuss the list of values on the Eleventh Candle Company website. The four core values are to redeem, restore, empower, and equip in that order. Begin to dream like little girls again because the world feels really dark right now. Amber explains where the Eleventh Candle Co name came from. Tweetable Quotes If we teach broken women to dream like little girls again, it will be a force that the world has yet to see. A lot of people think of human trafficking as something that happens “over there,” and not in our own backyards. People need three things to thrive - safe place, safe people, and purpose. I’ll never stop working until everyone has the ability to have a safe place, safe people, and purpose. You are the only thing that you are radically responsible for. Three years ago Amber had no intention of starting and running a full-time business. She was working as a nurse by trade and planned to start Eleventh Candle Co., a company that works globally to redeem, restore, empower, and equip those vulnerable to human trafficking, abuse, exploitation, and addiction, on the side. Her business grew exponentially, though, and a few years in she was running a multi-million dollar business, and the pressure was unreal. She found herself in a really dark place and was ready to quit everything. Life included. Through a journey into deep self-care, therapy, and looking inwards, though, Amber was able to find a way to put herself first. She learned to manage her energy instead of her time, and it impacted everything. We talk about: why she started a candle company when she doesn't even like candles how leading from a place of brokenness leads to burnout how she sets up her days differently in order to manage her energy and not her time creatively celebrating failure learning to rest instead of quitting   WHO IS AMBER RUNYON? Eleventh Candle Co is a social enterprise that seeks to redeem, restore, empower and equip those vulnerable to human trafficking, abuse, exploitation, and addiction. It is a way to employ women and empower them through work. How did they get started? Amber's interest in human trafficking was born during a trip to Ethiopia, where she witnessed human trafficking in broad daylight. And she wasn’t okay with this. When she returned home to Columbus, Ohio, she was shocked to learn that human trafficking was just as prevalent in her hometown as it was in Ethiopia. So she set to work to figure out a way to make an impact. She googled what businesses she could start that would take the least amount of capital, and she came up with... candles.  She started over two years ago, mostly selling online and at festivals and events, and just recently opened their first store in the Madery, at the Co-Hatch in Worthington - a place where artisans make their socially minded, locally made, and finely crafted products right in front of your eyes. While reflecting on their journey, Amber remarked that she grew up through foster care and recognizes the statistics of what can happen... 50% of kids in foster care are trafficked or abused: she could easily have been one of those she works with today. What do survivors need? In this podcast, we talk about many forms of trafficking - whether it's drug addiction, forced dependency, kidnapping, labor trafficking - it has countless different forms.  Eleventh Candle Co is focusing on what survivors of human trafficking need: They need a safe place, safe people, and a purpose in their job. One of the most important things is teaching them how to dream. Quite often those who have been through extreme situations need extra guidance - especially working through the past trauma they have experienced. Everyone is unique, and this can range from basic life skills such as budgeting to healthy eating to rebuilding trust. One of the most useful ways to make a difference is through peer support, and Amber has worked hard to create an environment where you can’t tell the CEO from an employee, from someone who has been trafficked. Because, as she puts it: “One, we're not a petting zoo, and two we need to have the same level of respect, so my staff can freely call me out on if I'm doing something wrong, whether it’s how I’m making a candle to if I have a bad attitude... and the reason that we did that is to create a level playing ground. “ Trust is a huge component as is creating a safe place where you're held accountable but it's still okay to fail.  Only when you are on an even playing ground can you really develop trust. What are the challenges of incarceration? For those who have been incarcerated, it's even more challenging getting back on your feet. The average woman leaves prison with about 29 dollars and the clothes that she came in with. The transition from prison is challenging, so Eleventh Candle Co has a different solution to working with formerly incarcerated women: they reach out and working with them in the prison system by getting to know them and paying them real wages so that they have a path after they are released. How do you affect change as a consumer? Eleventh Candle Co has a variety of beautifully scented candles.  Personally, I love beeswax candles, and since I attended the She Has a Name training on Human Trafficking, I light a candle from Eleventh Candle everytime I'm working on this podcast.  There is one burning right now.  For me, it is a symbol of the change I want to see happen in the world (plus, it's an awesome candle) -- but in the bigger picture, it is an example how we can effect change through the products you purchase as a consumer. Here is just a sample of companies built around a social mission like Eleventh Candle Co: The Noonday Collection - Jewelry & AccessoriesThe Madery in Worthington,

The silver lining is that there are people out there like Amber making a huge difference, and she shows that even small acts – like (https://eleventhcandleco.com/) – can be used to empower others. We’ve been taking our (https://takecareof.com/) vitamins and we feel great! They’re a unique monthly vitamin service that focuses on honest guidance, better ingredients, and personalization. You just answer a quick questionnaire about your goals, lifestyle, and values – then they will help you pick vitamins that are good for your body. “People need three things to thrive: safe place, safe people, and safe purpose. We always forget that purpose piece”   On a humanitarian trip to Ethiopia, Amber Runyon saw a big need--women and their families who were in the eleventh hour of suffering due to the effects of human trafficking.  Imagine her shock when upon returning home, she discovered that her own city--Columbus, Ohio--was the fourth biggest city in the U.S. with human trafficking.  What she first thought was a foreign problem was in her backyard--women who were sacrificing themselves to feed their children, with devastating outcomes.   Amber wasn't going to have that.   So this nurse became a founder of an incredible company, one that benefits victims of human trafficking, and in turn their families and larger communities, most domestic and abroad.  Without any experience, but a lot of determination, Amber created a pathway out for those women by providing them with a save PLACE, PEOPLE, and PURPOSE.  Amber talks about what her company does and how it helps those who are in darkness come back to the light.   Amber also shares how she herself learned to create light in her own life after realizing she wouldn't want to be friends with herself.  She now feels differently about that, and Amber teaches us how she got there.  Be ready to be SUPER inspired by this incredible woman!   Show Notes Eleventh Candle Co. Amber Runyon is hospice nurse who became a social entrepreneur.  She founded Legacy and Eleventh Candle Co. out of the desire to bring hope to women both in the United States and in Ethiopia who’ve been vulnerable to human trafficking, abuse, exploitation, and addiction, focusing on providing a therapeutic work setting that allows all women a fair chance and opportunity to grow. But more than that, if we can teach broken women to dream like little girls again, it will be a force that the world has yet to see.
