It's time to abandon outdated models and rethink everything.Accounting Influencerswith Rob BrownThe accounting profession is standing at a critical juncture. In a powerhouse panel for the Accounting Influencers Podcast, three industry leaders—David Osborne, CEO of Conga and former Caseware chief; Tom Hood, EVP of Business Engagement and Growth at the AICPA; and Katie Thomas, owner and founder of Leaders Online—called for a radical reimagining of how the profession recruits, retains, and empowers talent.More Rob BrownHood doesn't mince words. “Technology has always been the biggest driver of change in our profession,” he says, pointing to generative AI as both a threat and a massive opportunity. Yet, he warns, “We're hearing parents tell students not to go into accounting because it's going away. I actually happen to think the exact opposite.”Hood also zeroes in on what he calls the “moose in the room”-- the profession's leaky talent pipeline. “Pay has not kept up, and we keep talking to students about how hard accounting is. That culture doesn't resonate with this generation.”

Retailer earnings are showing weakness, but Katie Thomas from Kearney Consumer Institute said that it cannot all be attributed to tariff uncertainty. Thomas said that consumers are spending based on the reality right now, not based on potential economic weakness ahead, and that shoppers have the ability to shop around at stores with an abundance of options. An increase in delinquencies gives reason for concern, but spending from the top-end of consumers could help keep spending strong. Thomas thinks that there may be a return to supply chain issues from the pandemic, as companies weigh how much inventory to keep in stock due to questions over tariff policy.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

In this episode of the Trident Room Podcast, host U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Colleen Wilmington went onboard the Western Flyer in late 2024 for a discussion with members of the Western Flyer Foundation, then Education Director Dr. Rebecca Mostow and Science Manager Dr. Katie Thomas. Wilmington discusses the historic Western Flyer's complete restoration and return to Monterey Bay, along with the milestones achieved in her first year in service as a research vessel. Based out of Moss Landing, Calif., the Western Flyer Foundation was established to support community interactions and boost scientific outreach. Built in 1937 for the sardine fishing industry in Monterey Bay, the Western Flyer made history in 1940 when John Steinbeck and Dr. Ed Ricketts sailed to the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California), and the log was developed into one of Steinbeck's classic works by the same name. Following two sinkings and a full retrofit, the Flyer now supports docked educational programs for primary education programs, and underway programs supporting collegiate education programs. The use of one vessel between the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) is indicative of a rise in interest in oceanic studies, scarce opportunities for research at sea, and the unique oceanographic area in the vicinity of Monterey. Interviews included a tour of the Western Flyer and discussion of the combination of historical and modern capabilities. Since this interview, the Western Flyer has departed for a historic return to the Sea of Cortez, and is following closely to Steinbeck and Rickett's original log. In this conversation, Christine Russo, host and creator of What Just Happened, sits with Katie Thomas from the Kearney Consumer Institute. Thomas enlightens a spin on current-day perspectives suggesting that businesses can shift away from rigid, category-based views of shoppers and age-based demographics; and instead focus on the full psychological and lifestyle context of consumers. She explains that uncertainty, lingering from the pandemic and ongoing economic challenges, has made consumers more sensitive, selective, and frustrated, leading to brand skepticism and new behaviors even boycotts. While data and need states can offer valuable insights, Katie warns that brands often underestimate consumer irrationality and should avoid relying too heavily on structured analysis instead of qualitative human understanding. Modern brands must stay grounded in the emotional realities of their consumers if they hope to remain relevant and trusted.5 Key Takeaways:Consumers do not shop in strict category lines; they shop based on lifestyles, emotions, and immediate needs.Brand loyalty is fragile — consumers feel more frustrated and disconnected than ever, especially as prices rise without perceived added value.Psychological insights are crucial, but brands sometimes misuse data by ignoring consumer irrationality.Entertainment and engagement must be authentic and thoughtful — not sensory overload or gimmicky experiences that neglect fundamentals.Brands that want lasting trust must focus less on short-term wins and more on consistent, meaningful relationships rooted in true consumer understanding.

In the second of two episodes about coffee grinders, Kenneth and Starved Rock Coffee Co's Matt McLaughlin go even deeper into this very important subject. Today, they dive into the blade vs grinder debate and share which one is best.  They talk through the pros and cons of burr grinders, explaining the difference between conical and flat, and covering the subject of grind speed. They also look at dosing vs non-dosing grinders, step vs stepless, and Puqpress vs tamping of espresso shots by a barista.  They round discussion out by talking all things hand grinders. KEY TAKEAWAYS Blade grinders do not produce a consistent grind size. Burrs are perfectly spaced to produce a far more consistent grind. Matt explains how to maintain your burr grinder. If you start to get an odd taste, try cleaning your burrs. Step grinders tend to be more precisely engineered. Each individual grinder has its own characteristics. A puqpress is the best way to ensure consistency for espresso. Hand grinders work well and are significantly quieter than electric grinders. BEST MOMENTS ‘Think about burrs as being two plates with the perfect spacing in between them.´ ‘The low-speed grinder produces less heat, less noise and less static.' ‘As you use a grinder more, the burrs get worn down a bit, so you´re going to have to make adjustments.' He then digs deep into how the Swiss Water method was developed with Erin Reed from Swiss Water. She is part of a dedicated team of people who make high quality decaffeinated coffees using a process that is 100% chemical free.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Caffeine was first extracted from coffee beans in 1820. There are at least five ways to remove the caffeine from coffee beans.  In Brazil, they are working on developing a coffee tree variety that would produce caffeine free beans. Decaffeinated beans roast a little differently. Kenneth explains those differences. Methylene chloride or ethyl acetate can be used in both chemical extraction processes, but only tiny amounts are left behind by the end of those processes. The Swiss Water method achieves caffeine removal rates of around 99.9%.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Sanka is one of the oldest established coffee decaf varieties.' ‘You can't actually remove 100% of caffeine from coffee.' ‘At Swiss Water, they cup (taste) every single batch of coffee pre and post decaffeination for quality assurance.'   GUEST RESOURCES Website: https://www.swisswater.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/swisswater/   VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winningsingle-origin specialty coffee:https://umblecoffee.com/ You're disciplined and high achieving.
