In this conversation with the Review of Democracy, Professor Leigh Payne, Dr. Julia Zulver, and Dr. Simon Escoffierdiscuss the development of right-against-rights movements that have grown in numbers, strength, and influence in recent years in Latin America. The discussion draws on their latest book, “The Right against Rights in Latin America,” published by Oxford University Press, in which they show that newanti-rights groups are intent on blocking, rolling back, and reversing social movements' legislative advances by obstructing justice and accountability processes and influencing politicians across the region. Their book containschapters that empirically explore the breadth, depth, and diversity of a new wave of anti-rights movements. It details why they are fundamentally different from previous movements in the region, and — perhaps more importantly — why it is of vital importance that we study, analyse, and understand them in a global context, as their impact extends far beyond Latin America.Leigh A. Payne is Professor of Sociology and Latin America at the University of Oxford, St Antony's College. She worksbroadly on responses to past atrocity. Together with Gabriel Pereira and Laura Bernal Bermúdez, she has published Transitional Justice and CorporateAccountability: Deploying Archimedes' Lever (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and a follow-up edited volume on Economic Actors and the Limits of Transitional Justice (Oxford University Press, 2022). Shehas also edited with Karina Ansolabehere and Barbara FreyDisappearances in the Post-Transition Era in Latin America (Oxford University Press, 2021) and with Juan Espindola Collaboration in Authoritarian and Armed Conflict Settings (Oxford University Press, 2022).Julia Zulver is a Wallenberg Academy Fellow at the Swedish Defence University, where she researches feminist response to backlash in post-conflict settings in Latin America. She was previously a Marie Skłodowska-Curie research fellow between the Oxford School of Global and AreaStudies and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. She earned her D.Phil. in sociology at the University of Oxford in 2018, where she studied how and why organisations of women mobilise in high-risk contexts – actions that exposethem to further danger. Her book High-Risk Feminism in Colombia: Women's Mobilization in Violent Contexts was published in 2022. Her co-edited volume, Brave Women: Fighting for Justice in the 21st Century was published this February.Simón Escoffier is an assistant professor at the School of Social Work at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He is the author of the book Mobilising at the Urban Margins: Citizenship and Patronage Politics in Post-Dictatorial Chile (forthcoming, 2023). He holds a doctorate from the Sociology Department and St Antony's College at the University of Oxford. His research sits at the intersection of social movements, citizenship, urban marginality, local governance, democracy, and Latin American studies. Tonya Mosley's voice is familiar to millions of public radio listeners across the country. She co-hosted NPR's midday news show Here and Now for several years before becoming co-host of Fresh Air in 2022. Now, the award-winning audio journalist is taking listeners on a personal journey. Around two decades ago, Mosley was just at the start of her career working in Louisville, Kentucky, when she got a call from a young man named Antonio Wiley, who said he was her nephew. Mosley hadn't grown up with her father, so the idea that she might have a nephew she had never met wasn't totally shocking. But then her nephew said something that would shock her and come to define so much of Mosley's adult life. Wiley's mom and Mosley's eldest sister, Anita Wiley, had been missing since 1987, and Wiley has been searching to find out what happened to her since the age of 14. After a major discovery led to Anita's body in 2020, Mosley and Wiley decided to retrace Anita's life, hoping to find out what happened to her, documenting their effort in a podcast. It's called She Has a Name, and it's part memoir, part investigative journalism — a deep dive into the city and the history that shaped Anita's life and the lives of the people who loved her. In this episode of Notes from America, Mosley walks us through how this investigation redefined her relationship with her hometown and her identity, how it impacted her nephew, and what it means for people to try and find closure when so many questions remain unanswered. Tell us what you think. We're @noteswithkai on Instagram and X (Twitter). Email us at notes@wnyc.org. Send us a voice message by recording yourself on your phone and emailing us, or record one here. Notes from America airs live on Sundays at 6 p.m. ET., and listeners to the broadcast and podcast are invited to join the conversation at 844-745-TALK(8255). Podcast episodes are lightly edited from our live broadcasts.
For 33 years, the story of Anita Wiley's disappearance was unresolved. After firefighters found her remains in a vacant house in Detroit that had been set on fire, she was buried in a cemetery for the unidentified, and her case was named “Unknown Woman 1987.” In 2020, through a cemetery DNA program, Anita's remains were identified and linked to her son, Antonio Wiley, and her sister, Tonya Mosley, who never knew she existed. Together, Antonio and Tonya have produced a new podcast series, She Has a Name, that aims to tell Anita's story with attention to not only grief and trauma, but to beauty and joy. OH MY GOSH BESTIES... this episode is special. We met Morgan through the EmpowerHer community & spent our entire trip in Arizona with her! She HAS been on the podcast before! We recorded an episode WHILE we were in Arizona with Morgan & with our girl Jamie. Check out episode 35 to listen! It honestly is so cool to see how Morgan has GROWN so much since then, despite the fact that episode 35 was recorded only a few months ago!Morgan gets REAL & VULNERABLE in this episode. She speaks about her past struggles with disordered eating & how that has shaped her passion and how she shows up in her business. She recently took the LEAP into being a full-time entrepreneur & she truly brings you in on what that has looked like for her without holding ANYTHING back. We couldn't be more proud.Let's get to know Morgan a little bit before getting into the episode...Morgan Cone is a 26 year old entrepreneur & she lives in New Jersey! She went to school to get her degree in hospitality & when she thought she found her career path – COVID had other plans for her. 2 years ago she started her journey as an online health & fitness coach where she was partnered with a company who helped her realize her passion, but overtime she found that she was not aligned with that partnership any longer. She then took the leap to quit her full time corporate job to follow her passion in becoming a full time entrepreneur. Through her business, she offers 1:1 virtual coaching where she teaches women how to let go of a restrictive mindset & guides them toward reaching their goal of living a life full of balance! The passion she has for helping women create a healthy & sustainable lifestyle stems from her past struggles of disorded eating, negative self-doubt, and trying to becoming her smallest self, which forced her to miss out on so many memories that she could have created, but didn't because of the challenging place she was in. Through her experience of coming out on the other side, she realized that she wanted to be THAT person for women going through the same challenges. She wants to be the person that she didn't have, but needed. If she could tell her younger self one thing from going through all of that, it would be to reach out for help. When she is not working on building her business, you can find her spending time with family, especially with her favorite little man Luca, who made her an Aunt. You can find her curling up on the couch with a sweet treat & a glass of red wine, enjoying the outdoors, exploring cute little towns with friends, or spontaneously getting tattoos. She recently moved to down to the jersey shore, which is her happy place, and she is so ready to start the next chapter of her life while helping women do the same.We know you will absolutely love this episode, besties. Morgan has a way of speaking with such GRACE & PASSION, and she is truly one of the KINDEST people we have ever met.Go give her some LOVE after listening & say hi to her over on instagram! @morgantaylorconeCome be OUR bestie over on instagram! @besties_and_business @heyimjessjacobs @stepherhard
She HAS to be the only one who does this!!!
S/he (a song for balancing masculine/feminine energy) Lyrics (as best I could hear them, this was improvised afterall so your guess is as good as mine on some of these lyrics, but I'm pretty sure I'm 99.9% right): She She let the spinning of the circle down She let the sun beam just turn around and spin on its axis She watches from above She harvesting her love Can you hear her cry? She Has been waiting all her life There's a silent bloom inside, she cried Now he sighed Very quietly inside And never cried He Waited patiently For her to open her eyes one day and see He was always inside of she He was there Even when she couldn't see He waited quietly Under the cover of night She cried so loudly as she dried her eyes And reach out to no one She was a kitten in a galaxy Scratching at everything And he was the dog to chase Waiting patiently And then she traveled through space Expanding everything Bringing the life into new places She didn't realize her power And he just waited and benefitted While she was helping, going places And suffering, that was the cross she beared to bring And then one day she saw She could set it down He was standing there laughing at her like hey girl, don't you know you can let this go now? X3 Ooooh Like the setting of the sun Another will rise again But now I'm wondering Is it ever the same Are we the same moment to moment Are we entirely new and don't know it He reached out to me to tell me its okay He's always gazing at me From the mirror in front of my body And he reaches out energetically and holds me And he says I'm sorry I've had to do this But not really Cuz we've known that all along It was never wrong You were always meant to write about it in song And the dawn will break There will be a day When you and I will play like children in the sun We were meant to live as one, the time has come So if you could just lay down all of your weapons, all of your baggage all of your pain and move on and see that you were the one who created it all along. You've been out there like a soldier in the frontlines gathering reckless new experiences causing yourself pain only to see that today you can let it go. For it has birthed new reality for us both. Let me out, let us be free to play as one. My new song: https://open.spotify.com/track/3lSwCMju2KiSQK1kIKH6Gk?si=d91d0e9f1770400e My new project: https://www.thoughtsithinksometimes.com
Slam the Gavel welcomes Anna Tsekenis-Shehas to the podcast. She is a 54-year-old mother of two adult daughters, a graduate of New York University's College of Arts and Science, a former Department Manager and Assistant Buyer for Macy's East, and a former Account Manager for the Swatch Group USA. She is both a victim of, and a witness to, the violations of law, and abuse of power of officers of the court and their accomplices. Judge Culley actually took away Anna's property rights, forced an illegal transfer of $9 million of NYC real estate, and made her and her younger daughter HOMELESS and PENNILESS. Anna is speaking out and blowing the whistle on the manipulation of our courts and is doing so in the public interest and to raise a red flag about the injustices that are taking place within our court system under color of law. A victim of the violations of law of New York State Justice Anna Culley, and as such she has initiated the petition calling on New York State lawmakers to impeach Judge Anna Culley for those violations of law; for denying litigants their due process by falsifying material facts on her judgements and subsequent orders; and for abuse of office in issuing Contempt of Court orders and eviction orders for her favored litigants. New York State lawmakers need to address the violations of law of Judge Anna Culley during this legislative session AND she must be removed from the bench as soon as possible and certainly before December 31, 2028, the end of her elected term of office. Anna has also submitted a letter of testimony to the United Nations Special Rapporteur, Ms. Reem Alsalem, in response to the Special Rapporteur's call for input on the subject of custody cases, violence against women and violence against children.Anna can be found on Facebook: Anna Tsekenis-Shehas and can be reached through her LinkedIn profile page: Anna Shehashttps://chng.it/6rPfmrG67XSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comSupport the showSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)http://www.dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com/

Slam the Gavel welcomes back Laurie Smith, LMSW on the podcast. Laurie Smith was last on the podcast September 12, 2022, Season 3, Episode 103. Shehas been practicing social work for 18 years and is well versed in multiple modalities, theories and evidence-based practices. Her work has continuously involved working with marginalized populations. Her passion is working with Trauma Survivors (individuals, providers and systems ), through offering self-guided, self-paced journeys that point towards Harnessing the Power of Our Own Internal GPS, Wielding Our Survival Skills and Building Armor Strategically to improve Quality of Life, Effectiveness and Sustainability for all and dig into our Birthright to Our Power and Joy. What has impacted her work the most is her own Trauma Transformations and Utilization of Universal Laws in everyday life. We discussed how she loves working with trauma survivors and the shame that keeps them small. Laurie also mentioned a book, "The Myth of Normal, Trauma, illness & Healing In A Toxic Culture," by Gabor Mate, MD. Laurie discussed how trauma causes shame and, "you're not allowed to feel these things." If we don't look at these things we cannot heal, and it is victimization over and over again. If we don't talk about these experiences we won't get the job done which is healing. We have worth and value and to claim meaning in purpose in the face of trauma is the only way to begin healing. What little girl wouldn't want a concert by her fav boy band at her birthday party? Vanessa shared her birthday memory with the song "It's Gonna Be Me." Vanessa's older sister pulled together 5 high school, guy friends, to pose as the band NSYNC to perform at Vanessa's elementary NSYNC-themed birthday party. But as Vanessa has gotten older she still defers to this song to remind her that in the end it's gonna be her! Don't doubt that if this song is on in Vanessa's car, she's moving and singing along. This has become one of those songs that always get thrown into her playlists and she couldn't ever skip it. She HAS to sing along!! Vanessa has done some modeling and has had to endure some pretty tough treatment. Vanessa knows some of that harsh treatment was to make her better but some of it was just poor treatment. She could have had it break her OR it could have made her thicker skinned which is exactly what it did. She is now choosing to make a podcast to share some of the self-love she has learned along the way. She wants others to be able to "self soothe" too. She wants to empower others to love themselves and take care of themselves. What should her podcast title be? Full Show Notes
