Finding your authentic voice and using it regularly can be difficult. When today's guest, Elissa, literally lost her voice, she decided to dedicate her life to helping other people not only protect their voices but learn how to use them in conjunction with a regulated nervous system. In today's episode, my guest Elissa Weinzimmer shares about how a vocal hemorrhage led her to take a leap into a career as a vocal and presence coach, and how she is now experiencing a second leap rediscovering her singing voice and making music. If you're taking a leap of your own, no matter how big or small, finding your voice (in a world that limits so many voices) means staying in the present moment and supporting your nervous system. And Elissa has some great tips and resources to help you do just that. In this episode, you'll learn... [02:14] What a vocal and presence coach does and the types of people who seek this support [08:22] How Elissa suffered from a vocal hemorrhage, how that led her to start her business teaching voice, and how she found her singing voice again [19:02] What embodiment is and how Elissa uses it in her voice body connection process [25:54] The limitations that block different people from using their voices and how the polyvagal theory can help you to safely find your authentic voice [33:44] About how the polyvagal theory relates to your nervous system and how it functions [43:16] Elissa's advice for someone preparing to quit a job (or other scary scenario) and how to help regulate your nervous system in those moments If you're considering your own courageous career change, be sure to tune into this episode. One day this fall, I was scrolling through my Instagram feed, when I saw a post from my friend Josh. It was a screenshot of Texas Governor Greg Abbott's response to President Biden's mask mandate. Gov. Abbott wrote “Biden's vaccine mandate is an assault on private businesses” and below in the caption Josh wrote “I DO NOT comply.” My first thought was “Eesh, I need to unfollow my friend Josh.” But as my finger moved to hover over the button my second thought was: “Elissa Weinzimmer... you've got one person in your feed who's not in your silo of agreement. This is an actual chance to practice Conversation Culture.” In his comment, Josh had also said that he really wanted responses, especially from people who disagreed. So I took him at his word and instead of unfollowing, I commented. A real conversation ensued, and now we've brought that conversation to this podcast. Thank you so much Josh Trent, CEO of Wellness Force, for opening your heart to speak with me in a way that most of us avoid. Josh and I agree that these conversations - that really hearing each other - are the keys to creating change in our world. We hope this conversation is helpful to you, and if it ignites something that you want to share please reach out to either or both of us... we genuinely want to hear from you.

From a very young age, Elissa had always been a performer. In her college years, she found herself “doing it all” while she could, which resulted in her having a vocal hemorrhage, acid reflux, and muscle tension dysphonia. Although Elissa was told to take one month of vocal rest she refused to let this hold her back from continuing her journey in working in the arts! “I want to help people prevent what I went through so that they can have a happy and healthy voice that doesn't break down on them.”Elissa now shares her story, knowledge, and experience to help others going through similar things! On this episode we dive into: Muscle tension dysphonia: what causes it and how to prevent it.Throat chakras and how to balance them.Finding your voiceListening to your bodyThe anatomy of the throatBody and emotional connection The take-home: Elissa credits her newfound voice to the experience she had, in completely losing it. Ranging from singers to lawyers and even physiotherapists, she uses her knowledge to help all those who are struggling. Finding your voice can be something we all struggle with at different times in our lives. Whether it's speaking up for ourselves or having the ability to hold our tongue in moments where it might be best to - there are always ways for us to help ourselves find a balance, and Elissa shares advice on how to do that! “If we don't authentically express ourselves, we end up clogging ourselves in a way - or, we end up feeling spent.” Every moment is an opportunity warriors, and balance can be found in each one! How do we listen to really know if we are speaking our truth in our daily grind? When do we know if we are using our authentic voice or if we are repeating repetitive, memorized scripts inside our own bubbles of agreement? Elissa shares stories and examples to help us become more connected to our own inner truth, both at work and at home. This helps our ability to problem solve and create new solutions so that we don’t get stuck in stress, fear, and a feeling of unsafety. She also shares her 4-step model to transform conversations from a cancel culture into a conversation culture as a way forward to truly stand up for what’s right with openness, acceptance, and love. Enjoy this conversation with Elissa. Understand listening beyond what we typically consider by listening to your body, getting curious and having a team mindset as a starting point to tough conversations. A deeper sense of truth that people sometimes fail to tap into and share. 7:39 – Talking about the concept of conversation culture – as a response to cancel culture 10:57 – When do we walk away from a conversation/cancel vs. when do we converse/engage. 15:23 – The idea of soul in vedic philosophy. Concepts of creation, maintenance, and destruction instead of good and evil. 18:08 – Elissa shares when she started being aware of voice, communication, and conversation, specifically focusing on her memories as a child. 28:02 – Turning point that allowed Elissa to speak her words for those around her and not only for herself alone. A vocal hemorrhage, acid reflux, and severe clenching of muscles that lost her trust in her voice. How she learned to do less and just be. 34:09 – She shares tips on how to help people listen to you and your voice better. 41:03 – A strategy to help you when you’re running a meeting to bring charisma and presence in a remote meeting or on video. 43:22 – How to balance listening with having a voice that is authentic creating the foundation for a conversation culture. The three circles as self-focus, balanced focus, and others-focus. Key Takeaways: “Speaking and listening can happen with various organs of the body. It doesn’t necessarily need to be our vocal folds and our ears, but the ability to perceive what is going on, take it in, understand it, and then share our next piece of expression is the full process. It’s not complete without the half that is listening.” – Elissa Weinzimmer “The deepest truth that we have to express is also able to be heard, able to be listened to, able to be received. So, if you feel like you’re good at speaking your truth but your truth is intense, violently hurting people around you, I think there’s always going to be a deeper layer of truth underneath that accounts for the fact that true communication includes speaking and listening.” –Elissa Weinzimmer “When we have this manner of just shoving what we don’t want to deal with under the rug, canceling it in some form or fashion, it’s very difficult to live in alignment with our deepest truth.” - Elissa Weinzimmer “There’s a part of ourselves that we’re not listening to, and when we’re not listening to that part of ourselves, how can we truly, effectively listen to others?” - Elissa Weinzimmer “Listening doesn’t just have to deal with only listening to the other person, it also has to do with listening to yourself at the same time, and never leaving yourself behind, because it’s your own inner listening that’s going to help you understand how to proceed.” - Elissa Weinzimmer “When we get to that space of curiosity, new possibilities can arrive. New solutions to the world’s problems can arise. So, to me, the purpose of doing work where I am seeking alignment with my own inner truth, expressing my truth with the world, communicating with others around me, listening to others around me, the purpose of all of all is so that we can access a quality of energy where new solutions can arise. We can expand, we can grow, we can feel more fully of ourselves; then, we’re just living better lives.” - Elissa Weinzimmer “Our presence draws people into presence with us.” - Elissa Weinzimmer “Don’t forget that being truly present means listening and not just speaking.” - Elissa Weinzimmer “When we align with our inner truth, when we express it with the world, when we communicate with each other in a balanced, present way, it literally raises our vibration… just like a ripple process, it ripples around us and affects other people around us… it starts to elevate people in the society, and in that way, using our voices liberates us.” - Elissa Weinzimmer Notes/Mentions: Conversation Culture https://voicebodyelissa.medium.com/cancel-culture-has-divded-us-what-we-need-is-conversation-culture-64ae568b322f Mini-Course www.voicebodyconnection.com/minicourse Connect with Elissa Weinzimmer: www.voicebodyconnection.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/elissa-weinzimmer/ Connect with Raquel Ark: www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn

As speakers, there's one tool we must nurture, understand, and use correctly if we want excellent results. What is it? Our voice! And I'm not talking about the words coming out of our mouth, I'm talking about our actual vocal cords and the sounds we're making with them. This tool is often left out of the conversation as we focus on storytelling, getting over our nerves, and connecting with the audience, but it is vital to our success as speakers. Without our vocal cords, we have nowhere to go. On today's episode, I interview Elissa Weinzimmer, a vocal health educator, presence coach, and the founder of Voice Body Connection in New York City. Elissa works with Broadway stars, major television personalities, politicians, and CEOs to help them improve their presence, voice, and express themselves more fully. During our conversation, Elissa shares: common mistakes speakers make with their voice two voice warm up exercises to do before getting on stage how to take care of your voice a few techniques to use your voice correctly on stage ...and so much more! I even try out one of the exercises and it's not only effective, but also hilarious. Learn more about Elissa's work at voicebodyconnection.com. Interested in the Speaking School for Women? Books: Actor-y An Actor Prepares (Stanislavski) - tried and true about how NOT to act in novel form The Second Circle (Rodenburg) - prior recommend - about acting, being present and harnessing your life-force for good! Acting In Film (Caine) - it’s a quick read and some if it seems a bit trickster-like, but it’s a unique point of view about film acting from one who has been doing it for decades. Human-y (modern classics) The Alchemist (Coelho) - if you haven’t read this yet, please do… now, please! The Catcher in the Rye (Salinger) - if you just skimmed this in middle or high school, go back and read it - great seamless example of transparent inner life. To Kill A Mockingbird (Lee) - story about prejudice vs. compassion - go back and read it! (front list-ish) Between the World and Me (Coates) - OK I haven’t read this yet, but it’s on my nightstand and the reviews are nuts! Conceived in letter form from the author to his son. A Little Life (Yanagihara) - I’m not gonna lie, this book is loooong but the writing is acute and one of the 4 main characters is a actor. Takes place in NYC over several decades. If you have the time and the bandwidth for sadness, it’s a great read. Girl on the Train (Hawkins) - This was the big thriller hit last year and of course they are making the movie as we speak. Can you say unreliable narrator? (I knew you could). Ted Talks: Researcher Brene Brown in her now infamous talk about vulnerability https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability Neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor - about the stroke she had in her 30’s which transformed her understanding of existence https://www.ted.com/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight Dan Pallotta’s most recent about humanity and dreaming together https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pallotta_the_dream_we_haven_t_dared_to_dream Classes in LA: Jamison Jones Acting Studio -- just moved to Burbank The masterclass is an ongoing scene study class Monday nights from 7-11 in Burbank (across the street from Argentum photolab) Grand Opening for the Burbank space on May 14th at 4pm and on May 19th at 7pm there is a FREE Open class It's a class about finding your power as an an actor and honing your skill and unique sensibility.
