It's hard to believe (at the time of this recording) that it's April, and hopefully we all survived tax day and are able to get out and enjoy some of the beautiful Spring foliage that's popping up all over. On this Spring day, I've invited Lawrence Payne to join me as my guest. He is an award-winning copywriter, editor, voice actor and composer, who has worked with some of the world's most progressive companies such as Yamaha Digital Musical Instruments, Yamaha Audio, Teac, Hitachi and Brother. Many of them in his capacity as a senior copywriter at Intermart Advertising/Tokyo. He's received awards for his creative work featured in prestigious national and regional competitions and he has a reputation for excellence in technical documentation and communications. Lawrence has over 32 years of professional experience covering subjects ranging from music, cultural history, philosophy, religion, robotics, telecom and travel. Lawrence has contributed widely to consumer and trade publications, including the graphic-design journal How. As a knowledgeable musician and critic, he has written for Guitar Player magazine, served as associate editor at Music Connection magazine and studied with the Latin guitar virtuoso Jorge Strunz. He produces the YouTube channel Deep Space Theater, which features his own musical compositions. Among his recent literary efforts are the books of a Zen Buddhist abbot whose influence is spread throughout Asia to the Americas and Europe. However, with all of the aforementioned projects, the one title that's missing from Lawrence Payne's accomplishments, is as LinkedIn's Chief Cheerleader and Encourager! On any given day, you can find Lawrence reposting, commenting and encouraging others on their accomplishments. It's that kind of generosity and kindness that has brought us together to have a conversation. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mergui over Zoom video!Emerging singer-songwriter Mergui, made his debut appearance on NBC's TODAY Show on May 21st, to perform his single "Happy Now?". This track is the second single from his sophomore EP, Shadows of Blue, out now on Virgin Music/Saban Music Partners.Produced by industry icons like the legendary David Foster(Madonna, Michael Jackson) and acclaimed singer-songwriter/producer K-KOV, Shadows of Blue presents a unique body of work that captures the myriad emotions of staying true to one's passion, despite the obstacles encountered. Mergui's forthcoming EP delivers an intimate yet cinematic journey through the depths of human experience, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as early 20th-century Italian opera and the nostalgic allure of '70s AM pop. Mergui skillfully intertwines these influences, infusing each piece with a contemporary twist that is both refreshing and compelling. The EP has already garnered attention across various Spotify playlists including New Pop Picks, Just Good Music, and Breakthrough Pop to name a few.Mergui's talent has been gaining significant recognition lately. He was featured in in People's Talented 2024 Spring Emerging Artists, where they described his music as akin to "Paradise." The latest issue of Music Connection proclaimed Mergui a "crooner sure to be a big hit," and further showered praise upon their review of the EP, describing it as a collection of "beautifully written songs that tug at the heart's strings." Atwood Magazine further commended Mergui, declaring him “a brilliant singer whose voice manages to deepen the pain of the situation that the lyrics evoke.”Mergui truly stands out as an exceptional talent worthy of recognition! He is big overseas and comes from a musical family – his mom is a singer and his dad used to be a musician.Los Angeles Magazine hailed his current single “Happy Now?” as a “melodic, soul-stirring excavation on romantic heartbreak.” Earlier this year, Mergui released the Elton John approved single “Cry,” which he captivated audiences with a spellbinding, stripped-back rendition of on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Following the performance, the track climbed the U.S. iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts peaking at #10! Atwood Magazine praised the track as "a moving piano/guitar number that's sure to tug at plenty of heartstrings," and Rolling Stone featured it in their esteemed 'Songs You Need To Know' list alongside industry heavyweights like Beyoncé and Camila Cabello.Mergui's journey is one marked by remarkable achievements, including opening for chart-toppers Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 to crowds of 65,000. His talent has been widely recognized by reputable publications such as Variety, Rolling Stone, and Billboard. En: And in the midst of it all stood Oscar and Elsa, two strangers sharing this moment with the city.Sv: När låten tog slut stod alla stilla.En: When the song ended, everyone stood still.Sv: Sedan bröt applåder ut.En: Then applause broke out. En: Oscar and Elsa laughed and nodded at each other. En: It felt like they had always known each other.Sv: Sen kom tunnelbanan, folk började sprida sig.En: Then the subway arrived, people started dispersing. En: Elsa picked up her bag, gave Oscar a hug, and boarded the train.Sv: Oscar stod kvar, fortfarande leende.En: Oscar remained, still smiling. En: This day would never be forgotten. En: The day when Stockholm smiled, the day when a stranger became a friend. En: The music that Oscar and Elsa shared that day burst a bubble of joy in Stockholm's subway station. En: It made people smile, laugh, and even forget their daily worries for a while. En: And although Oscar and Elsa were strangers at first, they became part of each other's lives on that cold winter day, and they will The iconic Black rock band Living Colour's Time's Up, released in 1990, was recorded in the aftermath of the spectacular critical and commercial success of their debut record Vivid. Time's Up is a musical and lyrical triumph, incorporating distinct forms and styles of music and featuring inspired collaborations with artists as varied as Little Richard, Queen Latifah, Maceo Parker, and Mick Jagger. The clash of sounds and styles don't immediately fit. The confrontational hardcore-thrash metal - complete with Glover's apocalyptic wail - in the title track is not a natural companion with Doug E. Fresh's human beat box on "Tag Team Partners," but it's precisely this bold and brilliant collision that creates the barely-controlled chaos. And isn't rock & roll about chaos? Living Colour's sophomore effort holds great relevance in light of its forward-thinking politics and lyrical engagement with racism, classism, police brutality, and other social and political issues of great importance. In Living Colour's Time's Up (Bloomsbury, 2023), Kimberly Mack explores the creation and reception of this artistically challenging album, while examining the legacy of this culturally important and groundbreaking American rock band. Kimberly Mack is the author of Fictional Blues: Narrative Self-Invention from Bessie Smith to Jack White (2020), which won the 2021 College English Association of Ohio's Nancy Dasher Award. We had the pleasure of interviewing Real Friends over Zoom video!Illinois-based band REAL FRIENDS have released their brand new EP 'There's Nothing Worse Than Too Late' out now via Pure Noise Records. The EP, features previously released singles 'Tell Me You're Sorry' and 'Always Lose', was produced by Andrew Wade (A Day To Remember, Neck Deep) and mixed by Kris Crummett (The Callous Daoboys, Knuckle Puck.)Speaking about the new EP the band said "‘There's Nothing Worse Than Too Late' was written and recorded over the last year and half. We went back to some of our earlier influences for it. When writing, we kept referencing more timeless bands like The Starting Line, Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World and many others. It has always been important for us to write songs that are timeless, but that was in the front of our minds more than ever when compiling TNWTTL. We want our fans to go back and listen to these songs in five or ten years and still feel something. Lyrically it touches on depression, death, cutting long lasting ties for good and many other heavy subject matters. At the end of it all, if our fans feel less alone because of these songs then it's a success in our eyes."The band spoke on the latest single from the EP and said "‘Six Feet' is a song about longing to be loved and appreciated while you're still here. I always see and hear good things said about people after something bad happens to them or after they pass away. I think we all need reminders to appreciate our loved ones that are alive, healthy and right in front of us. This song is that reminder to ourselves and our fans."About Real Friends:For as much as the world has changed since Real Friends first emerged in 2010, the band's mission hasn't. They continue to bleed without apology and write songs that make it okay to feel everything: the ups, the downs, and anything else in between. Rather than shy away from emotion, the group runs right towards it with distortion cranked and hearts opened, tightening their careful distillation of pop and punk on each subsequent release. When the band—Dave Knox [lead guitar], Kyle Fasel [bass], Eric Haines [rhythm guitar], and Brian Blake [drums]—welcomed vocalist Cody Muraro in 2020, the goal stayed the same as they crafted new music for Pure Noise Records.Over the years, Real Friends has forged and strengthened a deep connection with fans. The group's 2014 full-length debut, Maybe This Place Is the Same and We're Just Changing, marked a turning point. Rock Sound named it one of the “Top 50 Albums of the Year.” 2016's The Home Inside My Head maintained this momentum with further acclaim and sold-out shows. In 2018, Composure incited applause from Music Connection, Alternative Press, Substream Magazine, New Noise, and Billboard who described it as “raw.” To date, they've also amassed over 100 million streams and counting. We want to hear from you! Happy New Years Metalheads! Tonight we share a fun story of how a veteran Metal Singer saved the day for two of this falls most anticipated Tours. It Started With THIS: German/American heavy metal legends ACCEPT have recruited Jason McMaster (DANGEROUS TOYS, WATCHTOWER) to sing for the band as ACCEPT‘s longtime frontman Mark Tornillo, who is unable to make the gig because he is recovering from a “virus infection”. And Ended with THIS : "Unfortunately, luck has dealt me a gnarly knuckleball," ARMORED SAINT Vocalist John Bush wrote in his post. "I came down with an illness and even though it hasn't made me feel bad, it still has infiltrated my nasal and chest area and planted itself. "Luckily, longtime friend and Armored Saint fan Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys/ Broken Teeth) is coming to the rescue again. He's already helped Accept earlier this year on tour and now he's stepping into the batter's box for me. I am extremely grateful, and I know he'll kill it! We were there in CLEVELAND with John Bush and ARMORED SAINT and in PENNSYLVANIA when Jason Took over for Bush. Jason McMaster, vocalist, bassist, songwriter, producer, artist, rock and metal enthusiast, minister (Pastor McMaster from the Church of Disaster) Known for fronting progressive metal pioneers Watchtower, as well as nasty Texas rockers Dangerous Toys, and the kick in the face riff raffers Broken Teeth. We get the entire story from Jason Himself. A great unique conversation filled with in-depth antidotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC. R.I.P. BOB NALBANDIAN- Re-Air Of a Oct 2020 MMROC Interview with BOB. Veteran heavy metal journalist, historian and documentarian Bob Nalbandian passed away on Friday, December 30 in Redding, California. Throughout the '80s and '90s, Nalbandian was also a contributing editor to several well-known music mags, including Metal Rendezvous, Creem, Music Connection, Hit Parader, BAM, Foundations as well as associate editor for men's magazines Platinum and Men's Perspective. Most recently, Nalbandian directed and co-produced the "Inside Metal" documentary film series (MetalRock Films) and the "Band Vs Brand" documentary film (Cleopatra Entertainment). These feature-length documentary films are available on DVD and all the major movie streaming outlets. The "Inside Metal" movies include "Pioneers Of LA Hard Rock And Metal", "LA Metal Scene Explodes", "The Rise Of LA Thrash Metal" and "Bay Area Godfathers" (each film is two parts). My guest Fia Nyxx is considered stylistically as somewhere in between Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton. She embraces a theatrical approach to her music and experimental clash of genres. Fia is also seen as a Hollywood glam-star, garnished with a rockstar twist. On her latest release Red Umbrella, she unleashes a masterful vision for storytelling. The album attempts to connect the dots along a path less traveled, embracing strength through vulnerability, devine-femininity, spiritual awakening, sexual liberation and a love story. Fia recorded her first album, Everything Girl, at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. under the musical direction of Will McFarlane (Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Bobby "Blue" Bland) and Brian Malouf (Michael Jackson, Queen, Madonna), and features players from the iconic Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, 'The Swampers.' She has toured the U.S. and Asia, and has been featured on the back cover of Billboard Magazine, Rolling Stone, CelebMix, Music Connection, Elicit Magazine, Prelude Press, Buzz Music, The Hype Magazine among other publications. That is the abbreviated version of her bio from FiaNyxx.com. Earlier this year, she did an impressive video for the single Escape, with dancer/choreographer Bobby Newberry (Danity Kane, Pussycat Dolls, Missy Elliot). In this conversation we talk about that video, plus PR, marketing, common indie artist struggles, release strategy, recording studio lessons, building confidence through repetition, and theatrical performance. I believe Fia was suffering from allergies or possibly a cold when we spoke. Fia, I hope you're all better now. Please enjoy this conversation with me and singer, songwriter, performer Fia Nyxx. Tarah Who? is a power duo in every sense of the phrase, bonded together by telepathic musical interplay and profound interpersonal connections. Alexx Calise's personal statement is, "I don't feel sorry for being who I am." Delivering a sound that is both fresh and uniquely her own, Calise combines crunchy rock riffs with probing lyrics and hooky pop melodies. Told throughout most of her career to not play guitar as much or at all, and to pursue a more “proven” musical direction, Calise instead chose to focus even more so on her instrument, practicing some 5-6 hours a day, and follow the only direction she knew how to—her own. Countless film and TV placements and millions of Youtube hits later, Calise has proven that her torchy vocals, impressive guitar chops, and heart-and-soul lyrics are enough to make an incredible international impact, even as a completely independent artist. Calise's hit song "Cry"--which became a web phenomenon almost overnight (spawning hundreds of covers, tributes, and dance routines) after it appeared on the Lifetime show “Dance Moms”—-has gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of downloads independently, and charted at #64 on the iTunes rock chart. Its official video features Sia's muse, Maddie Ziegler, who danced to the song in several episodes of the show. Calise also performed "Cry" on an episode of Dance Moms along with Nia Sioux and Kendall Vertes, and she performed on an episode of "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition" with Maddie Ziegler. Ever-growing and ever-changing, the effervescent Calise is continuing to make waves one small step at a time, currently penning songs for her band with Dennis Morehouse, Batfarm, and her other music project with Rob Johnson, Sensitive Robot. She is also a freelance writer for a variety of publications including Music Connection and Guitar Girl, a host for Guitar World magazine, an accomplished model and actress, and a small business owner. Alexx has been walking the path of sobriety for the last 36 months, learning to navigate through the rock and roll environment, thriving in creativity, and staying true to who she is. Calise's music has appeared on a multitude of different shows such as “Dance Moms” (Lifetime), "Dance Moms: Miami" (Lifetime), "Last Call With Carson Daly" (NBC), "The Voice" (NBC), Audrina” (Vh1), "Tough Love" (Vh1), “NY Ink” (TLC), “Next” (MTV), "10 on Top" (MTV), “One Tree Hill” (CW), "Texas Women" (CMT) and in the feature film, “LA, I Hate You” starring Malcolm McDowell and William Forsythe.
