Real Life Ben's decided that fall is… fine. Just okay. Leaves fall, pumpkin spice happens, and he moves on. His energy's better spent testing out new hands-free necklace cameras—a totally normal sentence—and keeping Orion fed and happy. Meanwhile, Steven dove headfirst into Shadow of the Demon Lord, playing Velmar the Archivist, a character with a flair for ancient lore and possibly poor life decisions. Five hours later, the table survived, the dice were appeased, and Steven was still buzzing from the chaos. Devon, fresh from his cruise survival, gave us tales of ice skating, laser tag, and kid karaoke—the real high seas adventure. The boat did, however, dock somewhere that was apparently not Devon-approved. We didn't ask for details. Some horrors are best left off-mic. Ben's also been deep-diving into retro TV, revisiting Police Squad! after catching the fourth Naked Gun movie. Add in Marvel Zombies—a wild, tragic, and completely zany series that gave him Batman Ninja flashbacks—and you've got Ben's viewing habits perfectly summarized: somewhere between slapstick and existential decay. Marvel Zombies on IMDb Review on The Playlist Steven's been championing Peacemaker, wrapping up season 1 and binging through the first seven episodes of season 2. He gives it a full-hearted recommendation—especially if you enjoy Superman references, alternate realities, and 80s glam metal in your superhero chaos. Devon, ever the connoisseur, dropped a bombshell: there's a new Simpsons movie coming, and it might even be replacing a Marvel release slot. He's cautiously thrilled. On the flip side, Alien: Earth got a collective “eh” from the group—though we all agreed its many storylines and editing quirks made for an interesting dissection. Future or Now We didn't make it here this week. Too many good tangents. Book Club This week's read was “They're Made Out of Meat” by Terry Bisson—short, weird, and surprisingly heartfelt. The crew praised its simple but sharp worldbuilding-through-dialogue, and Ben compared its absurd tone to Ren & Stimpy's close-up madness. For a kid-friendlier vibe, he also recommended The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. Read “They're Made Out of Meat” Watch the short film adaptation Flapjack on IMDb Next week's story: “Wikihistory” by Desmond Warzel, a time-travel tale told through forum posts. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick takes a closer look at the Season 14 episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by comedy legend Leslie Nielsen. Once known for serious dramatic roles, Nielsen reinvented himself as a master of deadpan comedy in classics like Airplane!, Police Squad!, and The Naked Gun. His hosting stint on SNL proved just how sharp his comedic timing really was. From his clever opening monologue on the differences between drama and comedy, to the game show spoof Snap Decision, to a biting parody of celebrity-endorsed products, Nielsen delivered one memorable sketch after another. Nick shares behind-the-scenes details about the show and even includes an interview with Nielsen about his unlikely transition into comedy. This episode of SNL also marked the very first appearance of Wayne's World, which at the time was just an odd late-night sketch filled with rough edges and questionable material. Nick plays it back in full and lets you decide if the sketch showed early signs of greatness. It's a celebration of Leslie Nielsen's comedy chops and one of SNL's milestone moments. [Ep 142]

Directed by Akiva Schaffer, The Naked Gun is the action crime comedy film which serves as a sequel to Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994). It is the fourth film in the Naked Gun film franchise. The son of Lt. Frank Drebin, Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson), must succeed in his father's footsteps to prevent the closure of Police Squad and save the world. We break down all things from modernising a 30 year old franchise, Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson's comedic chops and chemistry, to poop jokes and a murderous snow man.

While technically a sequel, Akiva Schaffer's new THE NAKED GUN is more accurately a reboot of the 1988 Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker cop-show spoof, which was itself a sequel-slash-reboot of their TV series POLICE SQUAD and would go on to spawn two sequels of its own. As circuitous as this IP has become over the years, though, THE NAKED GUN remains simple in both its approach and its appeal, which are essentially the same: lots and lots and lots of jokes. The original NAKED GUN was not unique in that approach, particularly within the spoof genre, but it is uniquely successful at it, so this week we're parsing how it balances small comedic one-offs with drawn-out set pieces, contemporary references with timeless silliness, and broad mugging with underplayed straight-facedness. Directed by Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping), this is a a 21st Century relaunch of the crime spoof franchise which kicked off in 1988 with the original "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" which starred the late, great Leslie Neilsen as Lt. Frank Drebin.  Well the mantle has now been passed to Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson (Schindler's List, Darkman, Taken) who plays his son, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr.  This time around, he has his own crimes to solve kicking off with the murder of the brother of the mysterious Beth Davenport played by Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl, Barb Wire, Baywatch).  Furthermore, the prime suspect MIGHT be tech billionaire Richard Cane played by Danny Huston (The Constant Gardener, Wonder Woman, Children of Men).  And hilarity ensues?  Let's find out if this latest reboot can bring the funny as well as the original....  See below for a link to a special video featuring a DELIGHTFUL scene from another movie featuring a needle-drop used within this movie:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77m3XlhQwaIHost & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

In 1998, we got the sequel to the movie “The Fully-Clothed Gun”, known as “The Naked Gun.” Leslie Nielsen played ace detective Frank Drebin who showed everyone the wrong way to be a cop. Now, in 2025, we're getting the inevitable. A remake of “The Naked Gun” starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr. who now has to carry on his father's legacy of being a cautionary tale with a badge who shoots first, asks questions much later, sometimes never. This reboot is brought to us by the same guys who brought us “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” and countless SNL skits, the Lonely Island boys. They get some help from Seth McFarlane from the “Ted” movies and “Family Guy.” Pamela Anderson, who never saw a boat she didn't have fun on, plays Frank's love interest. One, it might be a tad offensive, and two, it might be a little 80s-centric, which is okay with us. So join us as we go back to 1988 and watch Leslie Neilson and O.J. Summer's not over yet, and neither is Hollywood's addiction to remakes and requels! Case in point: The Naked Gun!Akiva Schaffer's legacy sequel picks up decades after 1988's The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, and centers on Frank Drebin, Jr. (Liam Neeson), who wants nothing more than to live up to the legacy of his bumbling-hero father (Leslie Nielsen). When a bank heist connects to a murder, Frank Jr. finds himself in the midst of a wild techno conspiracy--and a whole lot of cartoon nonsense in the background! There's been a lot of controversy surrounding original Naked Gun co-writer/director David Zucker's lack of involvement in the new movie, but Earth's Mightiest Critics feel the new creative team has done their best to uphold the franchise's zany spirit.Does this mean that comedy is "back"? If so, where did it go? Join us for a spoilerific and oh-so-silly look at one of cinema's perfect sequels (including just what we mean by "perfect sequel") and the movie that inspired it! “Nice beaver.” / “Thanks, I just had it stuffed.  Join Ian & B-Tech Kev for our 290th episode as we suit up, slip up, and dive headfirst into the gloriously ridiculous world of The Naked Gun (1988). We're trading time-travelling dystopias for banana peels, police files, and a barrage of visual gags as we discuss: In slapstick, how silly is too silly? Is there a line—or is the whole point to obliterate it with a steamroller and a tuba? Kev shares stories from his recent trip to New York City: the sights, the sounds, and whether each of us are New York or Los Angeles people Ian talks about the return of the weight game and how this is a summer of inward reflection Ian also shares some personal stories about his father—and how certain films like The Naked Gun carry more than just laughs; they carry memories. We explore Leslie Nielsen's genius—how his straight-faced absurdity became the gold standard for parody. Can a film this silly still resonate in today's comedy landscape? Or is this brand of humour an extinct species? Do background jokes, blink-and-you'll-miss-it sight gags, and tightly wound chaos make this more than just a spoof—Does it become precision parody? Baseball anthems, the Queen in peril, exploding toilets, and a police officer with the worst undercover skills in cinematic history. And finally, whether The Naked Gun is the Best Film Ever—or just a walk down memory lane Become a Patron of this podcast and support the BFE at https://www.patreon.com/BFE.

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 1, 2025. The big movie this week is a reboot/sequel titled "The Naked Gun," starring Liam Neeson in the slapstick farce about a group of hilarious idiots called Police Squad. Andy hasn’t laughed this hard in a movie for a long time, even if it did get a little vulgar at times. Another funny sequel is "The Bad Guys 2," an animated family movie about a group of anthropomorphic animal former bad guys who are getting framed for crimes they're not committing by a group of bad gals. Andy highly recommends Netflix’s new documentary, "WWE: Unreal," a must-watch for pro-wrestling fans. And after a bit of a delay, Netflix also has a mostly satisfying sequel with “Happy Gilmore 2.”  The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy, with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.  Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow. Frank Drebin of Police Squad. Howard Casner from "Pop Art" tries to explain how the editing of the film is different, Matthew Simpson from the "Awesome Friday Podcast" felt warm and happy seeing the film repeat the style of his beloved ZAZ team, and Courtney Small returns to the Lambcast after a long hiatus, to praise the laughter and casting of the film.

It's an eclectic week around here at Breakfast All Day with comedies old and new, a little body horror, and a good friend stopping by to share his insights. We begin with "The Naked Gun," a reboot of the classic comedy franchise, based on the brilliantly zany "Police Squad!" series. Liam Neeson stars as the bumbling Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., opposite femme fatale Pamela Anderson. We laughed a lot, and it's only 85 minutes long. In theaters. Next, Tim Grierson steps in to help Christy with a review of "Together." Real-life husband and wife Dave Franco and Alison Brie play a longtime couple exploring their co-dependency when they move to the country. In theaters. Finally, with "Happy Gilmore 2" now streaming on Netflix, we reviewed that AND watched the original "Happy Gilmore" from 1996. Somehow, neither of us had seen this essential Adam Sandler comedy. So you get back-to-back reviews of both movies in the second half of the episode. We promise to return to Movie News LIVE! next Friday. It's been a busy few weeks with travel and deadlines, and we appreciate you being here with us as we're scattered about during the summer. Thanks for listening.
