Oh my, here's a blast from the past! Originally released in May 2019, this is Episode Zero of the Finding Games podcast, which was originally released as an exclusive at www.patreon.com/needycatgames. To keep the stakes low, Sophie interviewed James (the other half of Needy Cat Games). It's a pretty rambly chat, the audio quality's a bit poor, and Sophie's (undeservedly!) nervous about her interviewing skills. But it's still a fun chat, and it's a great chance to see how far we've come! We hope you enjoy it - and Merry Christmas :) Sophie and James Music from filmmusic.io (incompetech.com): "The Show Must Be Go" by Kevin MacLeod “Happy Boy End Theme” by Kevin MacLeod Licence: CC BY (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
Today in Episode Zero of Bad Design. Pepsi tries to reinvent the two-liter bottle but misses the most prominent problem by a mile. Apple attempts to redesign over the ear headphones. McDonald's has a good idea that deteriorates over the project suite. Chargepoint mimics a traditional gas pump missing out on the EV revolution's opportunity for freedom. Somebody attempts a poor attempt at a Blade Runner poster. Adobe makes their CS icons even more confusing and somehow lacks total design. AND for the love of god ENOUGH WITH THE ELECTORAL VOTING SYSTEM.

“The ask is building an antiracist America. The ask is removing from our vocabulary this term not-racist, these terms like race-neutral policy. And realizing that there are racist ideas that suggest that certain groups are better or worse than others, and there are antiracist ideas that suggest we’re equal.” Ibram X. Kendi__________________________________[Theme Music Plays]Episode 0: An IntroductionWelcome to the Antiracist Artist Podcast, a podcast for activists, advocates and allies working to make our communities equitable through artistry. Each episode I am joined in conversation by an artist or arts facilitator who has been paving the way, in hopes of learning from their expertise and experience. Through action and unity, we can create a better tomorrow today. Let’s go.__________________________________Hello and welcome to the Antiracist Artist Podcast. I’m your host, Taylor Ybarra, and I’m so glad to have you a part of the conversation. The sound clip you just heard was #1 New York Times bestselling author and the Founding Director of The Antiracist Research & Policy Center at American University, Ibram X. Kendi speaking on the OWN Spotlight special Where Do We Go From Here? Through his brilliant work and pointedly in his book, How To Be An Antiracist, Kendi argues against the notion that something can be “race-neutral,” rather illustrating how every action we take, every decision we make is either racist or antiracist. Our artistic industries have long been steeped in white supremacy and inequality, and we as artists, facilitators and consumers must become acutely conscious of this condition and actively dismantle the systems of oppression that remain. We are positioned in a moment with terrific opportunity to manifest meaningful change. It is my hope that this podcast and the discussions that come from it may offer us ideas, inspiration, and steps forward for an accessible, inclusive, antiracist, and equitable future in the arts. We will be talking to some of the most exciting artists and art facilitators who have been carving out this path toward an antiracist world, with the opportunity to listen to how they have navigated their journeys and their visions of the future.Who am I? I am an artist, advocate, producer and facilitator who is deeply outraged with the state of our union. I focus my work toward making the arts, and in turn our larger communities, inclusive, accessible, equitable and antiracist in order to promote empathy and kindness; actively seeking to dismantle the oppressive forces of systemic and structural injustices in America. I am dedicated to a more comprehensive education on what brought us to this current reality, and learning what action may help to correct these injustices. I believe that art has a special purpose and ability to create an immediate change in its audience; that the creation of art is the greatest expression of compassion, empathy, and humanity; that compassion, empathy, and humanity are what our world needs most right now. Each episode, we invite our guests to choose an organization to uplift, one that is creating a meaningful impact toward a more equitable, inclusive, accessible and antiracist future. For this Introduction Episode, we invited the phenomenal vocalists from the theme music to this task. On behalf of these artists, the Antiracist Artist Podcast has made a donation to The Audre Lorde Project, Black Trans Advocacy Coalition, the Anti Racism Fund, Know Your Rights Camp, and the Austin Justice Coalition. You can donate and learn more about each of these organizations via the links in the show notes. This podcast is made with, by, and for those of us in this fight together, and I invite you to be a part of this podcast community with us. You can stay connected with us at AntiracistArtist.com, on Instagram @antiracistartist, or by emailing antiracistartist@gmail.com. Let us know why antiracist artistry is important to you, what questions you would like to dig into, and who you’d like to hear from in future episodes. I will leave the last words of this Introduction Episode to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., from an excerpt of a speech given in Selma, Alabama on March 8, 1965.__________________________________“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.“So we're going to stand up amid horses. Season 2 of the podcast is almost here – Episode 1 is airing on Thursday, the 24th of September – and I’m really happy to be back in touch with you! So here’s what’s in... On this week’s show… it’s our one year anniversary! We’ll be taking a quick look back to our very very first episode, we’ll call up our podcast daddy Graeme from Sunny 16. We’re also going to be taking a well ordered look at composition: what is it and do we even care?Oh, and we sold our souls and have a Patreon thing! YAY!After the regular small talk, we get down to party business. Since it’s our one year anniversary, we’re playing and critiquing Episode Zero – a two minute promo we did before we started the podcast. We asked listeners to leave us a voice message (on Instagram), answering the question: What is the next new thing you want to attempt in photography?Following this and our own answers, we called up Graeme from the Sunny 16 podcast. We cover what’s new with them (a lot) and catching up in general with Graeme. With the giggles out of the way, we hunker down for a discussion on Composition in photography. Here are the photos we used:Leading LinesFrame Within a FrameNegative SpaceSymmetryMovementDepth of FieldWE’VE GOT A PATREONSince it’s our one year anniversary, we’re brimming with ideas. Lots of them, really. It’s also time to pay the annual hosting bills. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have listeners who are so willing to buy our zines and the film we sometimes sell. It’s a real blessing. We tell you that we love you each episode, and we really do mean it.But with the whole late-stage capitalism thing we’re rockin’, these big ideas, these dreams of expansion, and these hosting bills require a bit of extra scratch. Thus Pateron. Now, we’re not going to feed you some line about how if you don’t give us money the podcast will go away. Neither of us can imagine that. But we’d like for it to become a bit more self-sufficient. We’re not just asking for money. Since this is Patreon, we’ve got some really fun rewards for you. Patreon tiers:We’ve got three Pateron tiers: 35mm, 120 and 4×5 (get it? We’ve got room to shrink AND expand!)The first – 35mm – is $3 a month. With that you’ll get:Episodes released two days early (we’re working Eric’s editing fingers to the bone!)Shout outs on the show10% discount at the store (coupon code)The second – 120 – is $5 a month. You’ll get everything from the 35mm tier plus:Monthly “Snapshots” episodes where we’ll talk about a lot more than just film photography. Get to know us a bit better. While we love film photography, we aren’t JUST film photographers. We’ll talk about the music we like, the movies, our weird ass childhoods, basically whatever. But since we ARE film photographers, we’ll probably end up talking about gear too. Imagine that.(It’s weird, when we talk on the phone, we are pretty much constantly talking about gear.)And for our most grand tier – the 4×5 level – $10 a month, you’ll get everything thus far mentioned, plus:Full (often 60 min) interviews with our guests. These will include bonus questions and extra fun!Have you ever wished we talked to our guests for longer than we do? Well, we actually do! For the sake of brevity (and we use that term VERY loosely here), we edit down the interviews to around 15 to 20 minutes. We actually talk to them for a lot longer. Sometimes three fucking hours – (Brandy!)And that’s that. It’s pretty simple. Basically what most podcasts are doing. We’ll have the link to the Patreon in the show notes – or just go to patreon.com/allthroughalens to find us. Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they take a trek to Monument Valley for John Ford's THE SEARCHERS, starring John Wayne and Jeffrey Hunter as cowboys searching for a lost girl in the American frontier. The film is considered one of the greatest westerns ever made, and it's easy to see why, but its legacy is conflicted and complicated, even though its influence on STAR WARS is clear. We’re a little giddy over the fact that we’ve reached Episode 50 of the podcast. If you’ve listened from the beginning, you know it’s actually more than that, but who’s counting… Unfortunately, Carl was a victim of the weather, a stomach bug or something, so he missed the festivities. Andrew was able to join us remotely from Tennessee, which was great, he’s been a part of the podcast from before the rebellion to Episode Zero and beyond. Actual fly fishing was discussed / lies were told to reminisce about recent outings around Mosquito Lagoon and the beaches of the panhandle. Piña Coladas lead to a teachable moment regarding “The Walk of Shame” vs. “The Walk of Fame”. We reviewed: Pabst Blue Ribbon Presents: The Greatest Beer Run Ever Episode 50’s pre-show dinner was prepared on the new Fire Disk & we share our initial thoughts on how it performs. The Mail Barge paid a visit to the Tailer Park to bring news regarding #PopperGate Don’t forget to visit the Bilge to get Larry Littrell’s review of Aaron Reed’s new book, Fly Fishing Austin and Central Texas. When you do, sign up for a chance to win a free copy. As always, there’s more to discover in the episode. Enjoy & Stay Trashy

Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they strap on jetpacks and fly around with COMMANDO CODY: SKY MARSHAL OF THE UNIVERSE in his very first cinematic adventure, RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON! It's a serialized action series with lots of fist fights, lots of cheapness, and several connections - direct and indirect - to the STAR WARS series! Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they enlist Robert Aldrich's rowdy and violent World War II "men on a mission" classic THE DIRTY DOZEN, a film that helped inspire ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY's updated perspective on intergalactic conflicts, and its comparatively brutal approach to heroic sacrifice! Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they unearth Buster Keaton's silent comedy classic THE NAVIGATOR, starring the legendary filmmaker as a hapless bourgeois hero who winds up drifting at sea on a giant ship with the woman who doesn't love him! Keaton's unique physicality and distinctive gags were a clear influence on the creation of Jar Jar Binks and his wacky in the climactic battle in STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE, but why are Keaton's comedic characters more well-received than George Lucas's CGI creation? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they explore Michael Curtiz's Oscar-winning and seemingly timeless classic, CASABLANCA! Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman lead an all-star cast in a romantic adventure set during the rise of fascism, where a notorious cad begins to realize he needs to pick a side in the war. It's not just an influence on Han Solo, but also the production design, background characters and - in RISE OF SKYWALKER - one of the dumbest STAR WARS plot points ever! Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they explore Raoul Walsh's quasi-western DISTANT DRUMS, the film that introduced the Wilhelm Scream! It's one of the most popular and recognizable sound effects in motion picture history, but the film that originated the Wilhelm Scream is disturbingly entrenched in deeply offensive colonialist fiction! And sadly, that's a literary tradition that films like STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES have, directly and indirectly, been inspired by. Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they explore Douglas Trumbull's SILENT RUNNING, a sci-fi epic starring Bruce Dern as an environmental activist who defies orders to destroy Earth's last remaining forests! With a screenplay by Michael Cimino (THE DEER HUNTER) and Stephen Bochco (NYPD BLUE), and early effects work by STAR WARS vfx pioneer John Dykstra, SILENT RUNNING inspired the creation of R2-D2 and even the tv series MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000! Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they explore the gorgeous and contemplative story of DERSU UZALA, a Russian film directed by Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa! This true story about a cartographer who befriends a small, uneducated, but impossibly brave and wise man in the wilds of Siberia was the direct influence for the creation of Yoda, and some of the most iconic moments in STAR WARS. And it may also be the key to unlocking the deeper meaning behind the different planets we visit in the franchise! Hello everyone! Welcome to Episode Zero of our new series on Redeeming the Time: The Kingdom. Before we get going on what the Kingdom is in the biblical sense, we need to address something very important: the modern usage of the term and our common conceptions of it. It turns out that what we think about the Kingdom might not actually be what the Bible means by it… Listen to find out what that means! Launching with our new series means it was time to get some official theme music. Starting with this episode, you’ll hear “Furious Freak” by Kevin MacLeod as the new Redeeming the Time theme! https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3791-furious-freak All other music comes from https://audionautix.com who also made our previous intro music, “Limousine.” Check our our site: https://redeemingthetime.online You can reach us at redeemthetimeministries@gmail.com

How did KING KONG break new ground, is it overdue for a reevaluation, and why is it - for better and worse - one of the key precursors to STAR WARS? As we’re sure you’re aware, recent developments surrounding Madame Rona and government mandates regarding social distancing mean that for the foreseeable future, Drew and Andy won't be able to record Aural Fixation in the same room as one another for a while. While we play around with ways in which we can record our episodes remotely, we wanted to share our first ever experiment with you – Episode Zero. Recorded in October 2018, this is the pilot episode of Aural Fixation – just two boys, a laptop and one burning question: do we have what it takes to become podcast sheroes?Turns out, we did. Well... kinda. While the sound quality will send you further west than Kim and Kanye at a Best Western in Weston-Super-Mare, our discussion of the Spice Girls, Alanis Morissette and a whole host of AF favourites will give you a sneak peak into the origin of Aural Fixation.Stay safe, be kind, and as always we hope you enjoy listening.
