Alba Leiva, Eduardo Saldaña y Fernando Arancón analizan la geopolítica de Asia central en este episodio de “No es el fin del mundo”. 1974 was a landmark year for film, a convergence of exciting international cinema and the original voices of New Hollywood that still resonates 50 years later. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. We start winding down the series with a great companion piece to our past episodes on "wilderness adventure" classics Dersu Uzala and Quest for Fire. Filmmaker Jeremy Workman returns to discuss Philip Kaufman's The White Dawn, the story of three whalers who become stranded in the Northern Arctic and end up integrating with an Inuit tribe. There's a lot to talk about, from Kaufman's status as possibly the most underrated of 70's directors to Michael Chapman's naturalistic photography, the film's inspired use of diegetic music, authentic regional language and frozen landscapes, and how this movie is definitely not Louis Malle's Black Moon. Y totalmente gratis. No tienes excusa.

“You just like children. Have eyes but don't see. You try live in taiga, soon dead.” We're joined by illustrator and poster designer Tony Stella to discuss what might be Akira Kurosawa's most neglected masterpiece, Dersu Uzala! The trio discusses where the film, an unexpected Russian-Japanese co-production, fits into the filmography of a filmmaker any reasonable cinephile would consider to be among the greatest to ever do it. Coming shortly on the heels of Kurosawa's suicide attempt, Dersu represents a strange spiritual transformation for the filmmaker but one that led directly to his stunning creative rebirth with Kagemusha, Ran and Dreams. The film follows a Russian army officer in the early 20th century on a series missions exploring the far reaches of the taiga on the border between Russia and China. On his initial trip into the extreme and unforgiving wilderness, he meets the titular character, a strange woodsman who yells at fire, shoots with supernatural accuracy, and knows the landscape better than anyone who ever lived. It's the story of an unlikely friendship between impressive, seemingly indomitable men. Content warning: This episode contains a brief discussion of attempted suicide. Coming later in Kurosawa's career and after his storytelling was thought to have gone out of vogue, DERSU UZALA is a comment on man's relationship with nature, himself, and the world around him. Based on a Russian memoir and shot on 70mm, it's a beautiful example of the humanist narratives for which Kurosawa became known and a stunning exhibition of the world's natural splendor – both within and without the people who seek to know it. New episodes are released Saturdays at 6pm GMT. So this week, Akira Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala. On a routine survey mission into the Russian wilderness, Captain Arsenyev comes a cross a local tracker and hunter named Dersu Uzala. Dersu agrees to guide the expedition on their journey through the forest. An unlikely bond is forged between Arsenyev and Dersu, as civilisation begins its encroachment into this previously isolated space. At time of recording, it was ranked 156th on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
Based on a memoir by famous Russian explorer Vladimir Arseniev, Dersu Uzala (1975) is a heartwarming adventure tale about the unlikely friendship between a man of civilization and a man of the wilderness. On a mission to map the Russian Far East, Arseniev encounters Dersu Uzala, a hunter and member of the Goldi people, from whom he learns much about the strange courtesies of life in the wild, based on a respect for all beings. But while this heartfelt friendship is not defeated by profound cultural differences, neither can it fully overcome them. Though Akira Kurosawa is better known for his samurai films, this late-career work of his was picked for the Vatican film list under the heading of Values. Dersu UZala is distinct from his other films not only in its subject matter but because it is his only non-Japanese-language film (as a collaboration with the Soviet production company Mosfilm), and his only film shot in 70mm. Dersu Uzala is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel and (in somewhat video quality, with out-of-sync subtitles) on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EWdAnJsfdc The next Vatican film list selection we are discussing is Andrei Rublev (1966), the deeply spiritual 15th-century historical epic about Russia's greatest icon painter. After the darkest period of his life, Akira Kurosawa was able to go abroad and make a film in the Soviet Union. The end result was Dersu Uzala, an adaptation of the touching true story of “Capitan” Vladimir Arseniev and the titular Goldi hunter who mapped the Ussuri region of Siberia together. As his only film shot outside of Japan, his only film not in Japanese, and his only film shot on 70mm, Dersu Uzala certainly stands out amongst Kurosawa’s formidable filmography. It also earned him the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Listen to Sanshiro’s Boys discuss how well it fits in with the rest. Listen here: https://linktr.ee/sanshirosboys
Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/PrsVkxtBgyo There is only one American film in the "Religion" section of the Vatican film list: William Wyler's 1959 epic Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Its epic scale and its astonishing set pieces such as the sea battle and the chariot race make the small, understated moments when Jesus enters the story all the more striking. Thomas and James are joined by Catholic art historian and Rome tour guide Elizabeth Lev to discuss the film. Next on Criteria: On the "Values" section of the Vatican film list, Akira Kurosawa's 1975 Dersu Uzala, based on the memoir of famed Russian explorer Vladimir Arseniev. It's a heartwarming tale of friendship between a man of civilization and a man of the wilderness. Dersu Uzala can be streamed on the Criterion Channel.

I've been tweeting sparsely on my own account, and retweeting vigorously on my account, Taiiku's account, and Manga In Your Ears' account of the current events, but Black Lives Matter. I reserve this space for sports ramblings, but this is more important. I don't know what reach we have here at my little podcast, but whatever we have, I will use for this. Please donate if you can, keep tweeting about everything, call your legislatures, protest, and vote. This episode, Chris (@gokuffy) and I continue our journey through Kurosawa solo with Kurosawa's only majority non-Japanese language film, Dersu Uzala! Then, Chris, Basil (@itsbasiltime), and I talk about Cross Manage, the lacrosse manga! For more Cross Manage content, check out our Manga In Your Ears episode on it. Also Chris, @antoniuspius Chris, is not on this Kurosawa episode because Chris and I recorded this way back on December 10, 2017 back when we thought the Filmstruck was going down and we thought we'd never be able to watch Dersu Uzala otherwise. So we jumped on the recording, and by the time we got here in podcast time, the Criterion Channel exists, and you can watch it there. Listen Show notes: 0:30 - Chris and I talk about Dersu Uzala! 46:07 - Chris, Basil, and I talk about Cross Manage! 1:17:57 - Questions! Next time is Kagemusha and Kono Oto Tomare!

Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point! This week on EPISODE ZERO they explore the gorgeous and contemplative story of DERSU UZALA, a Russian film directed by Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa! This true story about a cartographer who befriends a small, uneducated, but impossibly brave and wise man in the wilds of Siberia was the direct influence for the creation of Yoda, and some of the most iconic moments in STAR WARS. And it may also be the key to unlocking the deeper meaning behind the different planets we visit in the franchise! Akira Kurosawa's 1975 Soviet film Dersu Uzala might be his most obscure work, yet I see some interesting parallels between this story and that galaxy far, far away. It tells the story of a soldier on a survey mission of the easternmost parts of Russia who befriends a native hunter who is more wise in the ways of the wilderness. Join with me as we celebrate this underrated gem, as well as discuss the parallels I see to the Star Wars saga. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pageturnerstheywerenot/support
In episode eighty-four of movies imo., the film fagz are joined by their first ever very special guest host. Fellow film fag TJ Slipko (@teejslipko) steps into Daniel's seat while he's booked and busy to join Ben and Brandon as they travel back in time to the 48th Academy Awards -- a palette cleanse of an Oscar year. They yell over each other about Milos Forman's five-time winner ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, Fedrico Fellini's AMARCORD, Sidney Lumet's DOG DAY AFTERNOON, Steven Spielberg's JAWS, Akira Kurosawa's DERSU UZALA, Hal Ashby's SHAMPOO and finally, Robert Altman's NASHVILLE. Ben presents a thesis on all these films' commentary on toxic masculinity, TJ admires the incredible acting ability of Jack Nicholson's eyebrows and Brandon reminds us DETECTIVE PIKACHU is now in theaters. In Case You Missed Class: The Hero’s Journey in Masterpieces of Film
Dr. Mack talks about the Akira Kurosawa film Dersu Uzala and the Spielberg/Lucas film Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The famous Japanese director Akira Kurawasa released his only non-Japanese language film in 1975, Dersu Uzala, the true life tale of Siberia's version of Jedi Master Yoda. Matt and Mark invite Mark's better half Jean to share in our discussion of the quiet classic. Man v. Nature is always a straight forward theme, but here, we're treated to a nuanced interpersonal relationship between two characters that define the eternal struggle. With vistas of Far East Russia, Dersu is a beautiful snapshot of frontier life that's all but disappeared.Download: 066 Dersu Uzala

When we watch film various visual elements direct our understanding of the narrative and its meaning. The subjective position of each viewer informs their reading of images in a multitude of ways. From this perspective, religion can be imaged in film and may be found by viewers but its interpretation will depend upon the relationships between media and audience. In Imaging Religion in Film: The Politics of Nostalgia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), M. Gail Hamner, Professor of Religion at Syracuse University, offers a dynamic theoretically informed methodology to examine the ethico-political dimensions of religion and film. She offers a semiotics of religion that relies on her reading of Charles Peirce and Gilles Deleuze, who aid us in thinking about how viewers react to and transform cinematic images. Through three case studies, including Akira Kurosawa’s Dersu Uzala (1972); Abbas Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry (1997); and the Coen brothers’ The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), she explores how religion is imaged in social and discursive fields through notions of nostalgia and transcendence. In our conversation we discuss postmodern aesthetics, the pedagogy of self, philosophical gelling through mechanical reproduction, the political economy of film, Deleuzian relations of gaze, situation, and reflection, the space between humanity and animality, confessional ways out of alienation, and ideas about how to watch a film.
