According to an ancient myth, the world rests on the back of a turtle. And what does that turtle stand on? Another turtle. It turns out that it’s turtles all the way down. Miki Rezentes, today’s guest, believes that all software rests on the back of APIs. Similar to the myth, it’s APIs all the way down. We open our conversation by discussing how homeschooling her children did more to prepare Miki for a software career than anything else she’s encountered. Miki shares highlights from her talk, ‘APIs All the Way Down’. This set up this episode’s key theme, that the tech industry is too concerned with how its software interacts to focus on how the people in its organizations communicate — their ‘human APIs.’ Following this, we ask Miki how she learns people’s APIs and we talk about the benefits of observation and mirroring. Tracking her career, we touch on how Miki transitioned from a homemaker to a developer before diving into her recent work at the data science platform Mode. She provides unique insights into how she views architecture and design and why the concept of domain-driven design doesn’t go far enough. We know there are no numbers to tell us whether we are living sustainably and happily, but there are certain things we can assess to help us establish a benchmark and a starting point. The aspects of our lives that are measurable can be used to direct our decision-making, and in that way, guide us toward greater environmental awareness and overall higher quality of life. Having had significant self-doubt throughout my life, I recently have done my own self-inquiry on stopping the negative self-talk and really had to dig deep. What we say in our minds is really what happens in our life. If we believe it, it will be true.  We often think the solution is superficial, such as getting a new haircut, fixing your teeth, or changing the way you dress. But none of those things will heal the deep sources of negative self-talk. In this episode, we go over the list of ways to eliminate the self-doubt in your life, why you need to dig deep into your childhood memories, and finding a personalized approach that works best for you in your life. Today on the show we have a special guest, Eric Rosenthal. Eric is a casino loyalty expert as well as someone who just loves casino loyalty systems, and he is going to be one of the speakers at the first ever ZorkFest event. He is a contributor to several gambling and travel related websites and podcasts and discusses all things Atlantic City and his passion for “Comp Harvesting.” Using his knowledge of casinos and the travel industry, Eric teaches people how to travel for free and maximize value for your gambling dollar. We have been spending a little bit of time in London this weekend, and we got an opportunity to visit two of the London casinos last night after a very nice pub dinner in Hampstead. Today we are going to be talking a little bit about booking deal fares, otherwise often referred to as "mistake fares". We're going to talk about what they are, how you book them, how you get them ticketed. First off, it's best to not refer to any travel mistake as a mistake. Refer to it as a “deal”, refer to it as a “flash sale”, but never refer to it as a mistake. Step number one is finding these deals. Today on the show I was thinking a little bit about how people have to create their own travel experiences. Part of this thought was inspired Tim of Points to be Made, which is a great European blog that talks a lot about maximizing loyalty programs. In a recent interview for Million Mile Secrets, Tim had some interesting parting words that sort of made me think about a few things. The first was not to be wowed by the image many travel bloggers portray about airline miles and luxury travel. The second point was not to be misled by how people are collecting their points. There is often a debate in this area, especially when people are traveling and collecting miles on someone else’s dime. Tune in as we discuss more about why it is important not to believe all the hype about airline miles, how to properly plan your mile usage, and why you should always try to create travel experiences that are most important to you.
