Latest Uvalde developments: New details show that police on the scene did not know that 911 calls were being made by kids inside the classroom with the shooter. A mother who ran into the school to rescue her children has told her story to CBS News, after being warned to quiet down by Uvalde police - who have been enlisting biker gangs to help patrol the funerals of the shooting victims. Texas Senator Roland Gutierrez, whose district includes Uvalde, has expressed frustration at being left off of Lt. Governor Dan Patrick's committee of lawmakers addressing the shooting. An ABC News profile shows that Texas U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz are among the top recipients of pro-gun campaign contributions in that body, with Cruz receiving the most at $442,000 over his career - Cornyn has taken $340,000 from pro-gun individuals and political action committees. New details show that lawsuits filed by five APD officers regarding flawed crowd control devices and training related to the George Floyd protests have targeted the city, Mayor Steve Adler, Travis County DA Jose Garza, and a collection of social justice groups including Black Lives Matter and the Austin Justice Coalition. Meanwhile, five more protesters have filed lawsuits against the city over injuries they suffered during the protests. Local COVID positivity rates have risen into double-digit territory - now 19%, similar to numbers seen at the beginning for the Omicron wave in early January. Mixed results for advocates of LGBTQ-friendly bars on 4th Street: Austin's Landmark Commission has chosen not to recommend historic zoning for the area, but additional concessions to the existing businesses have come from the developer seeking to build a high rise on the block. The Downtown Austin Alliance has released its annual State Of Downtown report, showing that commercial building and leasing, business growth and residential sectors are all booming. The Austin City Council is set to consider new policies aimed at making the process of building accessory dwelling units or ADU's easier for Austin homeowners. Couch-surfers rejoice: the ATX Television Festival returns to downtown Austin this weekend. And, today's our last chance at some rain before several consecutive days of potentially record-breaking heat begin - likely also leading to all-time electricity demand highs for the beleaguered Texas power grid.

Code-Switching and VulnerabilityIn this episode, herdacious host Lorelei chats with Frances Jordan about code-switching in the workplace. Code-switching is the practice of altering behavior, speech, appearance, or expression of oneself to optimize the comfort of others in exchange for fair treatment. On its surface, code-switching might seem a harmless way of operating, however we learn that code-switching reaps consequences of identity erasure that are anything but benign. Frances reframes code-switching as a barrier that represses vulnerability and inhibits us from showing up in the workplace as our most authentic selves. From identifying specific triggers to understanding that no two people share identical experiences, Frances helps us realize that there's power in showing up honestly if we so choose, just as there's power in welcoming and respectfully empathizing with our co-workers' individual experiences. Regardless of race, religion, sexuality, or identity, we're all here to be the best professionals we can be — and we all deserve to do so as our most authentic selves!Host: Lorelei GonzalezCo-host: Frances Leigh Jordan, Esq.Frances Leigh Jordan currently works at Notley as the Policy and Social Equity Director. Kendi__________________________________[Theme Music Plays]Episode 0: An IntroductionWelcome to the Antiracist Artist Podcast, a podcast for activists, advocates and allies working to make our communities equitable through artistry. Each episode I am joined in conversation by an artist or arts facilitator who has been paving the way, in hopes of learning from their expertise and experience. Through action and unity, we can create a better tomorrow today. Let’s go.__________________________________Hello and welcome to the Antiracist Artist Podcast. I’m your host, Taylor Ybarra, and I’m so glad to have you a part of the conversation. The sound clip you just heard was #1 New York Times bestselling author and the Founding Director of The Antiracist Research & Policy Center at American University, Ibram X. Kendi speaking on the OWN Spotlight special Where Do We Go From Here? Through his brilliant work and pointedly in his book, How To Be An Antiracist, Kendi argues against the notion that something can be “race-neutral,” rather illustrating how every action we take, every decision we make is either racist or antiracist. Our artistic industries have long been steeped in white supremacy and inequality, and we as artists, facilitators and consumers must become acutely conscious of this condition and actively dismantle the systems of oppression that remain. We are positioned in a moment with terrific opportunity to manifest meaningful change. It is my hope that this podcast and the discussions that come from it may offer us ideas, inspiration, and steps forward for an accessible, inclusive, antiracist, and equitable future in the arts. We will be talking to some of the most exciting artists and art facilitators who have been carving out this path toward an antiracist world, with the opportunity to listen to how they have navigated their journeys and their visions of the future.Who am I? I am an artist, advocate, producer and facilitator who is deeply outraged with the state of our union. I focus my work toward making the arts, and in turn our larger communities, inclusive, accessible, equitable and antiracist in order to promote empathy and kindness; actively seeking to dismantle the oppressive forces of systemic and structural injustices in America. I am dedicated to a more comprehensive education on what brought us to this current reality, and learning what action may help to correct these injustices. I believe that art has a special purpose and ability to create an immediate change in its audience; that the creation of art is the greatest expression of compassion, empathy, and humanity; that compassion, empathy, and humanity are what our world needs most right now. Each episode, we invite our guests to choose an organization to uplift, one that is creating a meaningful impact toward a more equitable, inclusive, accessible and antiracist future. Focusing on the Austin, Texas community, the Austin Justice Coalition supports, teaches and advocates for black, brown and poor people by influencing local government and creating policy. Originally from Houston, Chas Moore, who heads the Coalition, moved to Austin because of sports. His brush with the law happened in high school, where he was caught up in a bad crowd and an incident gave him a record. But with that record and the subsequent stigma of being an ex-felon, Chas became a strong advocate for changing a system that punishes ex-felons with essentially a life sentence for many crimes that are not that serious. Chas had to sit in jail every weekend throughout high school and left him totally unprepared for college and the racial stigma of being black. He participated in marches and demonstrations, but came to the realization that long term improvements could only come with policy and law change, and so began the genesis of AJC. In this episode of #MovementMakerTV, Terri interviews community activist, Chas Moore. Chas saw all of the energy created around big rallies and protests but was frustrated when there was no quantifiable outcome to those moments. He decided that he wanted to see a real change in both policy and legislature. He wants to create sustainable change that will affect lives for decades to come.    To be successful, Chas suggests winning. If you don’t win, you don’t create systematic change. But that’s not all. Even if you have a system in place, it doesn’t guarantee the system will be successful. You have to have the right people within the system to make it successful.     For more information about becoming a #MovementMaker, visit my website: https://terribwilliams.com/. The teacher is still actively working and has attended school events that the student has also attended. What are the larger implications for school accountability and what steps are being taken to ensure a safe learning environment for Austin students? We are joined by Arenda Lawson, the mother of the student who was threatened, and by Chas Moore, the Executive Director of the Austin Justice Coalition, which is circulating a petition on social media to the school to hold the teacher accountable.Later, we commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion that occurred 49 years ago on June 28, 1969.
