When Eyes Wide Shut opened in the summer of 1999, it was widely considered a disappointment. This final film from legendary director Stanley Kubrick had been sold as an erotic thriller, and potentially even a peek into the real sex lives of its then-married stars, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. But Eyes Wide Shut was stranger than that: a meditative art film whose much-hyped orgy scene is more creepy than sexy, run by a cabal of rich and powerful men who prey on young women. But Eyes Wide Shut has received a burst of new attention in the last few years, amid constant revelations about a real-life cabal of rich and powerful men who prey on young women. Across the internet, cinema sleuths have been asking: is it possible Eyes Wide Shut was not fictional? Was Stanley Kubrick trying to warn the world about a real conspiracy? And if so… was he murdered for it? In this episode of Decoder Ring, we follow Lane Brown—a lifelong Kubrick fan and features writer for New York Magazine—as he investigates this conspiracy theory and what it says about how we deal with ugly facts and murky fictions. This episode was written and produced by Max Freedman and edited by Willa Paskin. On episode 142 of the Director Watch Podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter are joined by film critic Bilge Ebiri discuss the latest film in their Powell and Pressburger series, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. The latest film in the boy's P&P series is a showcase of when filmmakers don't go for propaganda, and instead try to tell a version of their own truth. During WWII, the filmmaking duo did films for audience's tailor-made to provoke the political agenda of their country. For The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, they take a look inward at their own countrymen and system and how destructive is has been on the war as much as the enemies they are fighting across Europe, even making our protagonists best friend a German character, causing uproar about the inclusion of someone for whom the world was morally against. In doing this, they created one of their defining masterpieces where their thesis lies in someone who has given their whole life to fighting for their country, all for their wisdom and talent to be washed away as a new generation rises up, a brilliant work. Ryan, Jay, and Bilge break down their thoughts on the film, laserdisc physical media, the idea on romance at the heart of our main trio, showing no violence in a war picture, the films ending, and much more. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen on the AW YouTube page. This podcast runs 2h33m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger with a review of their next film, I Know Where I'm Going. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. This week we're brooding, Victorian style, with Vulture's Bilge Ebiri! Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is a Best Picture nominee and is well represented in the craft categories, but it has only one acting nomination, for Jacob Elordi's hulking monster. It's of a piece with past craft-heavy Oscar contenders like Dune or The Lord of the Rings, but does Frankenstein actually stand a chance? We discuss the film itself, its lavish sets and costumes, del Toro's choice to center the monster as the hero, and how that decision reshapes the monster's opposite, Victor, played by Oscar Isaac. We also touch on the new Wuthering Heights, also starring Jacob Elordi, the history of Wuthering Heights adaptations, the shameless state of celebrity Super Bowl ads, and finally atone for our past sins, as Bilge defends previous subjects Train Dreams and Hamnet against our critiques. As it turns out, we were the monster all along. Sign up for Check Book, the Blank Check newsletter featuring even more “real nerdy shit” to feed your pop culture obsession. This episode examines The Conformist, Bernardo Bertolucci's 1970 political drama set in 1930s Italy. The film centers on Marcello Clerici (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a mid-level Fascist functionary who is ordered to assassinate his former professor, an anti-fascist dissident living in Paris. The film, which includes many flashbacks to Clerici's early life and decision to join the secret police, provides powerful and chilling insights into the psychology of conformism and fascism The film, widely considered one of the greatest ever made, not only features outstanding performances but also superb production design (Fernando Scarfiotti) and cinematography (Vittorio Storaro) that helps capture Italy under Mussolini. The film is as timely today as it was when it was released, as the world witnesses a resurgence of authoritarianism in the United States and Europe.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction3:45 Fascist Italy under Mussolini7:58 Why Clerici joins the fascists12:39 Repression of sexual orientation and the desire to belong14:10 Why people are vulnerable to fascism18:56 Manganiello and the fascist enforcer23:43 Perspectives on normalcy and the scenes in Paris31:56 How the film speaks to the Trump era36:40 Architecture in Mussolini's Italy39:08 The murder of Quadri and Anna44:39 After Mussolini falls50:30 The lack of consequences for going along with fascism 56:04 The Holocaust in Mussolini's Italy Further reading:Bosworth, R.J.B., Mussolini's Italy: Life under the Fascist Dictatorship, 1915-1945 (2006)Elbiri, Bilge, “It's Time to See ‘The Conformist' Again,” Vulture (Jan. 14, 2023)Huq, Aziz, "America Is Watching the Rise of a Dual State," The Atlantic (Mar. 23. 2025)Kael, Pauline, “‘The Conformist': The Poetry of Images,” New Yorker (Mar. 27, 1971) Moravia, Alberto, The Conformist (1951)Musil, Robert, The Man Without Qualities (1930-43) Law on Film is created and produced by Jonathan Hafetz. It's the OUT OF SIGHT episode, and our guest is Bilge Ebiri. Do we need to sell you on this? OK, fine: in 1998 Steven Soderbergh took a job for hire directing an Elmore Leonard adaptation and ended up finding the style that would define much of his career, minting George Clooney as a movie star, capturing Jennifer Lopez's best-ever performance, working with Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman and a bunch of other people for the first time, and making one of the most watchable films of the 1990s. Jake also read the whole book. We talk about Leonard's moral universe, prison stuff, cop stuff, crime fiction stuff. I mean, come on. It's the OUT OF SIGHT episode with Bilge. Qual a origem dessa ideia? Interseccionalidade. In the 2010s, Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) began to mobilize an international media system to project Turkey as a rising player and counter foreign criticism of its authoritarian practices. In Talking Back to the West: How Turkey Uses Counter-Hegemony to Reshape the Global Communication Order (University of Illinois Press, 2024), Bilge Yesil examines the AKP's English-language communication apparatus, focusing on its objectives and outcomes, the idea-generating framework that undergirds it, and the implications of its activities. She also analyzes the decolonial and pan-Islamist messages AKP-sponsored outlets deploy to position Turkey as a burgeoning great power opposed to imperialism and claiming to be the voice of oppressed Muslims around the world. As the AKP wields this rhetoric to further its geopolitical and economic goals, media outlets pursue their own objectives by obfuscating facts with identity politics, demonizing the West to aggrandize the East and rallying Muslims under Turkey's purportedly benevolent leadership. Insightfully exploring the crossroads of communications and authoritarianism, Talking Back to the West illuminates how the Erdogan government and its media allies use history, religion, and identity to pursue complementary agendas and tighten the AKP's grip on power. It's Die Hard on Alcatraz! This time on the show, Phil and Liam attempt not to explode with excitement as they discuss Michael Bay's 1996 all-star action classic THE ROCK, with special guest Bilge Ebiri! When a group of highly trained Marines led by decorated general Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) take over Alcatraz and threaten to launch VX poison gas missiles at mainland San Francisco, the government are forced to turn to two unlikely heroes: eccentric FBI chemical weapons specialist Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) and enigmatic prisoner John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only man to have ever escape from the legendary penitentiary. Phil, Liam and Bilge discuss their memories of seeing this iconic movie upon its initial release, and their respective relationships with it over the years since. They lay out the film's numerous connections to DIE HARD in the ‘Die Hard DNA' section and dig deep on its under-discussed thematics, particularly with regards to its complex exploration of patriotism. As always, they analyze the film's heroes, Mason and Goodspeed - two highly innovative characters both played by iconic actors - and debate whether Ed Harris' General Hummel might be the greatest action movie ‘villain' of all time. They also talk about as many members of the film's astonishing supporting cast as time will allow, including the likes of David Morse, Michael Biehn, William Forsythe, Jon Spencer, Tony Todd, Claire Forlani, Vanessa Marcil, Todd Louiso, Gregory Sporleder and many more! Finally, the guys break into the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to dispense some action movie awards, and wrap things up with a particularly tricky edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! THE ROCK trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3qcNyjj9ZQAt the time of release, THE ROCK is streaming on Fubo and FXNow in the US and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, Fandango and all the usual platforms!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
