Special guest: Everybody wave hi to Mira. Things Discussed: Spring game: Craig watched the line, wasn't that impressed. Bryce was throwing flat; overthrowing McCulley is a sin. There's a guy across the aisle who's already mad. Seth thinks when the threw that small window past a dropping DE was good; Brian thought he didn't see the drop. Jadyn Davis: Didn't look that polished but much improved. Mikey Keene? Brian thinks he's not a P4 quarterback. Receivers? If you go in the portal you can get a bunch of CJ Charlestons at this point. McCulley had the one contested ball and did the George Costanza. Keeps the expectations for Bryce in context, because Trevor Lawrence had NFL wideouts to throw at as a freshman. Want guys to step up: Marsh, Browder: turn around and context that. Seth: comp is what Nebraska got out of Raiola last year. Need the running game to be the engine of the offense. Get to functional. Hey Sam, how many targets is Jalen Hoffman getting? Are they going to do zone reads for Bryce? OL: Sprague up, Link down—if they're not naming him the starter now maybe he needs to move inside. Sam thinks Frazier can get healthy and get back his agility. Seth thinks they're gonna survive until Babalola is ready, ETA midseason. Break: Sam talks about his colon (I left this out of the podcast version). Defense: Tackles go six deep with big dudes. With them it's more about who they're going against. Linebacker: We are RICH. Seth thinks we have two guys who are better than the top six guys in the Draft, AND Rolder made it through spring without getting hurt. Barham has many uses, Sam thinks he's going to be an All-American. Sullivan can do Barham things. Big Nickel Mason Curtis: think this is a thing. Seth thinks Efobi looked like he was moving them. Dom Nichols: not surprised that a guy who played a lot as a true freshman is getting talk as DE#3. Who's got bend? Sam says Barham is #1. Seth wants to see it from Edokpayi.

HUMP DAY! And some snow/rain in the area. In the news this morning, a tragedy at a Kwik Trip in Mankato yesterday as an employee was stabbed to death, a MN Senator was arrested for soliciting a minor for prostitution, the stranded astronauts finally touched down on Earth, an update on the man allegedly held captive by his stepmother in Connecticut, and it looks like Dollar General is going to be closing some stores in the near future. In sports, we recapped yesterday's March Madness First Four games and looked ahead to tonight's matchups. Plus, the Bucks lost on the road to the Warriors, Alexander Ovechkin went without a goal in the Capitals' win last night, and Tracy Morgan puked all over the floor at Madison Square Garden the other night due to food poisoning. Elsewhere in sports, a woman has now been charged in the death of a TV reporter who was covering the Super Bowl in New Orleans, and the Paul Skenes rookie debut patch card is going to sell for an insane amount of money. We let you know what's on TV/streaming today and talked about the upcoming Mickey Mouse horror movie, "Screamboat". A doggy daycare bus driver in Wisconsin went viral recently with a video of the passengers on her bus getting ready to celebrate St. Paddy's Day, and a three year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after helping to save his great grandmother after she fell. Today is "National Backyard Day", so we discussed a list of some of the most popular backyard games. A woman just discovered her boyfriend's laundry hack and it makes almost no sense. Plus, a rundown of some of the new food & drink offerings at Miller Park this year as the Brewers home opener is in 11 days! And with March Madness officially beginning this week, a couple of VERY rich people(Elon Musk & Warren Buffet) are looking to give away some cash & prizes for perfect & nearly perfect brackets. In today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a parking spot in Boston that costs more than my house, a man who punched a United Airlines gate agent in the face because he was mad about his seating assignment, a soccer player who is not dead yet, a guy who tried to pull a "George Costanza", and a daycare in Georgia that was drugging the kids to get them to sleep. Quackcast 726 - Ego!?

The QuackCast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2025 69:31

Do you have a big ego? Do you know someone who has? This Quackcast is about utilising egos for comic characters for comedic purposes, to humanise character, or to make villains more unlikeable and or funny. Big egos are a sign of poor self esteem, people inflate their egos to cope with feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. For examples of that we have a certain prominent politician and also a tech billionaire as perfect representations of every facet of that concept. :) Personally I LOVE a protagonist with a big, inflated ego, especially if it's also illustrated that it's undeserved, and often shown punctured. It's pretty uncommon for protagonists to have big egos though unfortunately because people see that as weakness in their character and status rather than making them more interesting. Big egos are far more common in villains, mostly because it's seen as a negative trait, but also because it's an easy way to show how weak and pathetic they are, they're also a goldmine for easy laughs. The latter is the reason that the characters with the biggest egos in fiction are often not the main villain but the villain's lieutenant. My favourite protagonists with big egos are Tank Girl, George Costanza from Seinfeld, Duckman (played by the same actor as George. Jason Alexander), Flashman from the books by George MacDonald Fraser, Space Dandy, Basil Faulty from Faulty Towers, Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping up Appearances, and Meg from the series Drifters. I'd love to name more but it's not a common trait, though you can point out a million villains with massive egos. In the Quackcast I examine Conan the Barbarian as a story about ego: Conan acquires a massive ego as a reaction to being kidnapped as a child and living as a slave, then being trained as a gladiator and lauded with praise and women. That only increases when he gets his freedom, joins his friends and becomes a successful thief. He's then tasked with rescuing a princess from a cult and returning her to her father. His ego is so big he eschews the help of his friends and tries to do it alone. He's captured by the villain, Thulsa Doom, the same man who killed his mother and enslaved him. Thulsa lectures him on the strength of ego and manipulation before crucifying Conan on a tree. As he dies, Conan's ego dies with him. His friends find his body and take him back, reviving him without ego. In then end Conan defeats Thulsa Doom, Thulsa expects his ego to dominate Conan and save himself but Conan kills him the same way Thulsa killed his mother, and does it totally without ego. As a last gesture he burns down Thulsa's temple and his cult disbands: the last two symbols of Thulsa Doom's over inflated ego. Do you agree with my take on Conan the Barbarian? Do you like characters to have a big ego? If so, what are your fave examples? Keeping It Real with Cam Marston

On this week's Keepin It Real, Cam has found infinite inspiration for commentaries for years and years to come. ----- I sat quietly this morning and was ready to admit it's time to quit Keepin' It Real. I've lost my creativity. My energy around writing insightful and truthful things about the world around me was gone. Seven – maybe eight! – years is a pretty good run. Maybe close to 350 or more original pieces – I should be proud of my work and unashamed to put these commentaries to bed. But then… Scrolling through today's headlines, I spotted a lifeline. Something that will allow me countless weeks of effortless content. It was hard to believe it was true, but… there it was. Mark Zuckerberg was turning off the fact checking on his social media platforms. No longer would Facebook and Instagram work to fact-check people's posts. They'd let the community of users do it, instead. The article went on to say it was his way of genuflecting to the Cheeto Jesus – our upcoming, return of the king, Commander in Chief. Trump dislikes facts and accuracy so Zuckerberg, to curry favor with him, was ending any reliance on it in his giant megaphone of social media. Wow. If the age of Enlightenment wasn't already dead, it is dead dead dead now. I've always been a fan of the expression “never let the truth get in the way of a good story” and I embrace a good, exaggerated story whether it be my own or someone else. However, today the expression is “never let the truth get in the way of anything.” And what a giant hall pass this offers me in these commentaries. Why tell the truth when our highest elected official avoids it, and his minions support it. So, with that, I'm redoing my biography. You may know me as a commentator for Alabama Public radio who lives in Mobile married with four teenaged children. That was who I was during the days when truth mattered. Now I'm a world-famous commentator who offers sage wisdom and insight and has been feted by the Nobel Prize committees and has turned down Pulitzer Prizes because they weren't prestigious enough. Sounds good. My four children are the best kids in any environment they ever enter – academics, athletics, needlepoint – you name it they're the best out of everyone. My previous work was as an astronaut, but it bored me, a lion tamer but the smell of the lions got to me, and, of course out of tribute to George Costanza, I am both an architect and a marine biologist. I've built a woodshed once and tossed a fish back into the Gulf, which in this era of non-truth, is sufficient enough to give myself those titles, regardless of what anyone says because those people are jealous liars who are out to get me. My resume and my CV will change by this afternoon and will include the words Adonis, Guggenheim, and National Book Award. I'll call the bank and tell them the balance I see online isn't correct, my truth says it is much higher, and they better change it or I'll sue because the bank has a personal vendetta against me. And my truth says that it's not the Gulf of Mexico nor the Gulf of America. It's the Gulf of Cam. It, in fact, has always been. Tell me it's not true. I dare you. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just tyring to Keep it Real.

He was nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. He won a Tony Award. Forecast: Visibility is low with a 43% chance of extended response times. Heavy downpours of healthcare vulnerabilities dominate, with brief breaks of exploit intelligence. ‍ In this week's episode of GreyNoise Storm⚡️Watch, we kick things off with our regular roundtable introductions before diving into some intriguing poll results about cybersecurity metrics. The community weighed in heavily on what drives action in their organizations, with Mean Time to Respond leading the pack at 43% of votes, followed by Mean Time to Detect at 28%. Notably, system patching status came in third at 26%, while the tongue-in-cheek option about whiskey levels in the team liquor cabinet garnered a surprising 13% of responses. The crew then gathers round the Festivus pole to channel their inner George Costanza's as they each air their grievances — cyber and possibly otherwise — from the past year. So many things were busted in 2024 that we're shocked we kept the episode under four hours. The episode features a crucial discussion on practical OPSEC fundamentals, particularly focusing on executive protection challenges. We explore how predictable movement patterns and excessive public information exposure can create security vulnerabilities. The conversation covers everything from website vulnerabilities to social media risks, emphasizing the importance of consistent security protocols and information control strategies. Healthcare cybersecurity takes center stage as we discuss recent research presented at the Health-ISAC Fall Americas Summit, courtesy of our friends at Censys. We also dig into VulnCheck's comprehensive analysis of Known Exploited Vulnerabilities for 2024, along with essential insights on exploit intelligence and vulnerability prioritization. The show wraps up with a look at the results of platform improvements since GreyNoise's "Greyt Migreytion". Storm Watch Homepage >> Learn more about GreyNoise >>

It's often fascinating to pinpoint when someone received the first inkling of what their eventual career would be. For many, of course—thinking of all the kids who grew up wanting to be professional athletes, movie stars, astronauts, or firemen—their idealized career path often follows a long and winding road of self-discovery, full of detours and roadblocks that transport them to an eventual destination that was not on their original radar. But what if you could date your dream? Get some firsthand experience in your supposed career of choice? Would you remain totally enamored with the opportunity and steadily move toward further engagement? Or, would you, like Seinfeld's neurotic George Costanza, break things off with a nonchalant, “It's not you, it's me”? Today's guest, Jeanette Bennett, CEO and founding editor of Utah Valley Magazine and Bennett Communications, had that revelatory experience while working as a camera operator at an Idaho TV station when she was in high school. It turned out to trigger the first of many career reframes for this talented entrepreneur and storyteller.

They discuss how our fight-or-flight responses are deeply wired and why it's beneficial to have these triggers. The conversation gets into the importance of voluntary discomfort and how it can lead to a more fulfilling life. They also address the misconception that feelings should be suppressed, suggesting instead that feelings can be valuable cues for growth. Through practical steps and relatable examples, they offer insights on how to wake up to our triggers, assess our safety, and move toward discomfort for personal growth. We took some Big Leadville Energy into this great episode! The main topic was the Silver Rush 50 Miler, which David raced on Saturday. The last few months have been a doozy, starting with the bike accident and severe concussion back in early April. It has been hard at times, in ways that go a lot deeper than athletics. This episode is about falling, and the power to GET. BACK. UP. The 50 Miler was David's best ultra yet, and it possibly sets up a date with destiny at the Leadville 100 in August (or not). It gave us an excuse to talk about so many fun topics: the decision to race after sickness, the non-linear mental health journey since the concussion, pre-race meals, Naked belts, road shoes in trail races, unconventional tapers, altitude racing, the logistics of high-carb fueling and how that relates to effort level, and whether to bicarb or not to bicarb. Plus lots more! And that was just the start of a celebration episode! Other topics: Tour de France stories including Mark Cavendish's legendary win record, embracing power and finding your strong, the most epic aero glasses, lessons from Klaire Rhodes' win at Mount Marathon, combining ketones and caffeine, the UK's ridiculous Olympic standards, Michelle Rohl's podium finish in racewalking at 58, and hot takes. David wore Hoka Mach Xs (a road shoe without any traction) for a 50 miler with tons of rocks. So maybe keep that in mind during his spicy shoe take at the end of this episode. Or better yet, treat it like advice from George Costanza, and do the opposite. We love you all! HUZZAH! To paraphrase the great American hero George Costanza, “You've been living a lie? I'm living, like, 20.” If you're up to no good in one way or another, there are a lot of ways you can get found out. You might get ratted out, you might unknowingly leave behind evidence of your bad deeds, or you might just get flat-out caught in the act. And if you've built multiple lives, multiple relationships, all on their own structures of falsehood, the chances of each of those goes up dramatically. You can only juggle so many chainsaws before one cuts off your damn hand. Join us for a true crime story about a man who built too many counterfeit lives--a man whose lies ensnared not only him, but the women who loved him. Note: Katie had a bad cold this week, so Whitney had to do more talking than usual in this episode.
