There is a lot of good swimming to be had in the Bristolregion, with several vibrant and active outdoor swimming scenes in the region - in the city itself, but also in the nearby River Avon, in the River Brue, in the Avon estuary, and in the sea at sand point. If you can go a mile or ten out of Bristol there is a lot of choice - at Weston Super Mare there are several lido beaches to choose. River swimming at Bradford upon Avon (the river Avon upstream) is a scenic delight. People really care about their swimming here. Thesetwo accounts of swimming around Bristol are extracts from my book ‘Memories like Water – Swimming in 65 places at the age of 65'. They took place as pandemic lockdowns eased in 2020, which gave them a surreal edge – can wereally swim together again? At Cleveden Marine Lake, and at Farleigh and District River Swimming Club, just south of Bath.

It's often not about the big attractions, it's about the people, the attitudes, and the vibe that makes a place distinct.  Fiona relayed a quote from the international artist Morag Myrescough, working on a project in Weston; she said, ‘Make happy those who are near, and those who are far will come'.   Join me as I talk to Fiona about their work to put creativity and culture at the heart of Weston's community and why culture is so important in uniting people and creating distinctiveness. Enjoy the episode.Super WestonHuge thanks to podcast sponsor Noble Performs. Saturday, April 18th, 1998. In the early hours of the morning, two police officers were dispatched to the scene of a disturbance at a car park near Dolphin Square and Oxford Street in Weston-Super-Mare. PC Clive Golding-Ellis and PC Robert Deville were expecting a standard weekend drunken brawl. They saw something much different and considerably more disturbing. A woman was lying on the ground; her skin blistered and distorted with extensive burns that covered her head and upper body. As the officers urgently called for an ambulance, they spoke to a man standing nearby, drinking from a can of lager. He was drunk and told the officers, "I tried to put her out. The flames kept going back again”…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Eileen Macfarlane.Edited by Joel Porter at Dot Dot Dot Productions.Script editing, additional writing, illustrations and production direction by Rosanna FittonNarration, editing assistance, additional writing, and production direction by Benjamin Fitton. To get early ad-free access, including Season 1, sign up for They Walk Among PLUS, available from Patreon or Apple Podcasts.Listen to our companion podcast ‘They Walk Among America' here: https://play.acast.com/s/they-walk-among-americaMore information and episode references can be found on our website https://theywalkamonguspodcast.comMUSIC: Beyond all Time by Moments. Frances reads five letters, written in July, Aug and Sept of 1909, by  Vera, Avice, Edmund, Enid and Bernard.Vera writes the fascinating sentence - for two days I have been alone in my glory. She also describes the Girls Friendly Society Festival - tea and games in the garden of one of the big houses in Sydenham. But it pours with rain, so 70 people have tea in the cellars.  Dr Cox and four of the siblings are on holiday at the Red Lion in Thursley, Surrey; the pub is on the London to Portsmouth Road. There are motor cars and dust, and Dr Cox is writing his next book – Rambles in Surrey. Edmund has been to the Church Lads' Brigade camp; at Weston-Super-Mare, and writes all about it. Enid, Cyril and Bernard have been to France and Switzerland,  staying in Chamonix, Finhaut, Arolla and Chandolin. They see the Mer de Glace, the  glacier up on Mont Blanc, which in 1909 was staggeringly larger than it is today. Bernard, still sunburnt from Switzerland, tells a story about a noisy chicken and Mr Morgan, the innkeeper of the Red Lion. Bernard also talks about the North Pole having been found, but did Dr Cook or Mr Peary discover it first? And Louis Bleriot is the first person to fly the English Channel, the Duke of Abruzzi has climbed higher than anyone else in the Himalayas, Cody has flown further than anyone else in a heavier-than-air flying machine, Neville is home in England again and Cyril has been promoted to Divisional Inspector. Everything was happening in England in the summer of 1909 Machell Cox Budget Letters is on twitter @CoxLetters, or do email me if you have found this podcast interesting - machellcoxletters@gmail.comAll content is subject to copyright and belongs to Frances Thompson and the Bodleian Library.Intro: 0:00Vera's letter, July 28th 1909: 3:00Notes on Vera's letter: 9:20Avice's letter, August 9th: 12:51Notes on Avice's letter: 20:36Edmund's letter, August 23rd: 27:58Notes on Edmund's letter: 34:30Enid's letter, August 25th: 39:42Notes on Enid's letter: 46:52Bernard's letter, Sept. 3rd: 51:10Notes on Ber's letter: 57:12

Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide by John Cleese: how to learn to be creative

Hey, thanks for listening. Have you subscribed to the bookmark newsletter? A fortnightly email with book reviews and ideas of what you should be reading next. Click here to subscribe.   About the book We can all be more creative. John Cleese shows us how. Creativity is usually regarded as a mysterious, rare gift that only a few possess. John Cleese begs to differ, and in this short, immensely practical and often very amusing guide he shows it's a skill that anyone can acquire. Drawing on his lifelong experience as a writer, he shares his insights into the nature of the creative process, and offers advice on how to get your own inventive juices flowing. Not only does he explain the way your mind works as you search for inspiration, he also shows that, regardless of the task you've set yourself, you can learn to be better at coming up with a promising idea, refining it and knowing when you're ready to act on it. We can all unlock new reserves of creativity within ourselves. John Cleese shows us how. Source: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/creativity-9781786332257 About the author John Cleese was born in 1939 in Weston-Super-Mare. He studied Law at Cambridge University and has enjoyed a successful career in comedy, theatre and film and television. He achieved success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report. In the late 1960s, he co-founded Monty Python, the comedy troupe responsible for the sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus and the four Monty Python films: And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python and the HolyGrail, Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. In the mid-1970s, Cleese and his first wife, Connie Booth, co-wrote and starred in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Later, he co-starred with Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis and former Python colleague Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. He also starred in Clockwise, and has appeared in many other films, including two James Bond films, two Harry Potter films, and the last three Shrek films. Source: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/creativity-9781786332257   Big idea #1 — You can learn to be creative (…but you probably won't be taught it in school) Creativity is not something that's discussed much in school, certainly when John Cleese was at school. There, the focus tends to be on grades, logic, on reason, on analysis, and getting the right answer. It was only when he arrived at Cambridge University and he joined Footlights, that he realized that he was actually creative. This came as quite a surprise to him because it was never something he considered previously. But he immersed himself in the creative field of writing in particular, because it was fun, and he liked the people he was doing it with. He was studying to become a lawyer, so pursuing a creative vocation was never something he intended. But because of this experience of joining Footlights, spending time with people he liked, and going through that creative process, he ended up learning to be more creative. He surrounded himself with other people, he tested what made people laugh, and he put himself out there with monthly smoker (open mic) sessions. Big idea #2 — Slow down Early on in his writing career, John noticed this phenomenon of coming up with ideas overnight. He would get stuck on something in the evening, go to bed, wake up and generally have it solved, or at least know the next step to be able to progress and move it forward. He continued to use this particular technique throughout his career, and still does today. Once he lost a whole sketch he'd written down. Much to the annoyance of his co-writer, and he had to rewrite it from memory. When he eventually found the original version, he realized that the rewrite was actually better because he'd mulled on it a little more, he'd slept on it, and the idea had evolved for the better as a result. He references a particular study about creative architects, or what makes some architects more creative than others. One of the trends they found is that the more creative architects will delay decisions for as long as they were allowed, which gave them the time to play and to explore their ideas further. He goes on to talk about how we have to get comfortable with the discomfort of leaving things open and incomplete, in order to make them better. (Something I definitely need to remind myself) This also links to a later idea in the book about getting a second opinion. We should allow time for that extra layer of feedback, and the power of collaboration, to help take your idea to that next level. Again, it adds a little bit more time and forces us to slow down, but it will mean a better outcome in the end. Big idea #3 — Get your panic in early In this little section on getting your panic in early, John talks about the benefit of a bit of panic. It gives you energy, so you might as well use it, and use it early. You can harness that panic to get something down on paper — even if it's just scrappy notes that are going to go into the bin later — but it creates some much needed momentum that is necessary to move forward. Once you've made this first panic-driven move(!), you can feel better about making that first tiny, tiny step, and then get onto the important questions like who you're writing for, or whatever the context is for what you're creating. In a separate section in the book, he says that creativity isn't an emotion, it is a frame of mind. And therefore we need to prepare ourselves to be creative, and not be worried about, or distracted by, other things. So this idea of getting your panic in early, getting all those weird negative, messy feelings out of the way early on in the process, will mean you can move on to the more important things that you actually need to do to create something. ____________________ Let's connect LinkedIn Instagram See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Kyle and Joe interview Ben Sessa, a Consultant Psychiatrist. Ben comes on the show to talk about preliminary results from the first ever, MDMA assisted therapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD). 3 Key Points: Ben Sessa plays a role in leading the current MDMA assisted therapy study for alcohol use disorder, and shares preliminary results. In the current stage, out of the first 12 patients, 2 have turned back to drinking, 5 have stayed completely dry and another 5 who have had a drink or two but have not relapsed back to their typical levels of consumption. Most people with a long term substance addiction have a history of trauma. MDMA can help people feel safe, in order to work through and heal trauma. Navigating Psychedelics Trip Journal                                               Integration Workbook Show Notes Preliminary Results They had 13 people in the study, and they took data on 4 people The first caveat in these results is that there was no blinding and no placebo in this study There is no way to tell that it was solely the drug that resulted in the effects In terms of tolerability, everyone preferred it to other treatment, there were no bad reactions to the MDMA, there were no negative reactions, it was a total success in terms of tolerability In the current stage, out of the first 12 patients, 2 have turned back to drinking, 5 have stayed completely dry and another 5 who have had a drink or two but have not relapsed back to their typical levels of consumption They did a similar study previous to this one except without the MDMA and they had 11 patients, 9 of them went back to their full level of consumption They chose alcohol use disorder because it's so difficult to treat All patients are recruits from local drug and alcohol services Ben picks them up after they have detoxed, after they have been cured of the physical dependence, but when they have yet to be cured of the psychological dependence They receive 2 dosing days within their 8 week therapy (usually weeks 3 and 6) They do 125mg and then half that size dose 2 hours later, which sustains the high Ben mentions that recruitment is difficult, a lot of people have a drinking problem, but they can't have patients that are depressed, suicidal, pregnant, epileptic, etc. Future for the Study Up until next March, they are continuing to take in new patients for the study to have more data The next step is to have a randomized control study This current study is sponsored by Imperial College of London It's not a MAPS sponsored study, it's the first non MAPS, MDMA study The main papers, with all the data are over a year and a half away from publishing Addiction and Trauma “MDMA addiction is as rare as a hen with teeth.” - Ben “Most people with a long term substance addiction have a history of trauma.” - Ben Trauma and PTSD is highly treatment resistant There are certain drugs that inhibit fear response, such as alcohol, heroin, etc They make you forget the pain but you can't work with them and do therapy with them, with MDMA you can MDMA can help people feel safe, in order to work through and heal trauma “We are all the products of our attachment relationships.” - Ben Breaking Convention This past year was the 5th one There were 1300 attendees from all over the world What's wonderful about Breaking Convention is how multidisciplinary it is There's the guy in the gray suit in one room talking about high level neuroscience and a hippie with dreads in the other room talking about the spirits that live in the Salvia leaves Ben says they work really hard to make that balance work There's a lot of debate and conflict in the psychedelic movement right now, Breaking Convention is very important for creating space for this debate Looking ahead Ben is looking into opening a clinic He mentions academia is not his area of study, he is a clinician, but this research is an excuse to treat patients Links Breaking Convention About Ben Sessa Ben Sessa is a consultant psychiatrist in adult addictions, working part-time at Addaction in Weston-Super-Mare and is senior research fellow at Bristol, Cardiff and Imperial College London Universities, where he is currently taking time off clinical medical practice to study towards a PhD in MDMA Psychotherapy. He has specialist training as a child and adolescent psychiatrist and is interested in the developmental trajectory from child maltreatment to adult mental health disorders. Dr Sessa’s joint interests in psychotherapy, pharmacology and trauma have lead him towards researching the subject of drug-assisted psychotherapy using psychedelic adjuncts. He is the author of two books exploring psychedelic medicine; The Psychedelic Renaissance (2012) and To Fathom Hell or Soar Angelic (2015) and is currently conducting research with Imperial College London and Cardiff universities studying the potential role for MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of PTSD and alcohol dependence syndrome. Dr Sessa is outspoken on lobbying for change in the current system by which drugs are classified in the UK, believing a more progressive policy of regulation would reduce the harms of recreational drug use. He is a co-founder and director of the UK’s Breaking Convention conference.

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

How To Make Money Is Our Discussion Starter Today Welcome to todays episode of Join Up Dots which is a solo show where your host David Ralph answers a series of questions that has been sent to the show by the listeners. Most of these have either a "How Do I Make Money?" element or "How Do I Start A Business?" So lets start with the first question..... Andrew Hedley, Australia First of all, I just wanted to say how much I am loving the podcast! It helped me exit the corporate career and into this fun and crazy world of start ups. I listen to one podcast every afternoon and it is the perfect inspiration when I start to feel lost and have doubts. Thank you. Advice please - I won't go into details, but I am working on a business that people love the concept, but it's hard to see how I can monetize it. It makes me want to stop and go back to my traditional job as a real estate but my gut says that if I persist the money may just come in ways I don't know exist at the moment. As your show tells us every podcast 'you can't connect can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward'. So should I just soldier on without a concrete strategy for monitizing the idea or should I work it out before moving forward? Isaac Burke, Seattle Your podcast is so great and matches where my life is headed. I'm excited that you're podcast is a part of my journey. You have so many podcasts and I'm new to changing my mindset. Which of your podcasts should I start with? Also, the Ultra Running podcast is missing the Jim Carrey quote, it's just silent. Kim Bola from South Africa Hello David and the Join Up Dots team. Wow what an amazing show. Thank you so much thank you so much, thank you so much. I have been listening now for the last few weeks and I am astonished by your energy are you always like this or is it just for the show? Would you be kind enough to answer a question that has been bothering me over the last few weeks? You talked about taking the leap, you talk about finding the things that you want to do, and you've been talking very much about how you managed to do it. You might have answered this in an earlier episode but I would love to know when the idea to become a podcaster came to you and did you have it all planned out, as I would love to do this myself All the best Kim Bola from South Africa Hello David Love the show I would love to know what has been the greatest business idea that you have heard on the show? Could you point out one that you thought was mind blowing? Thank you John Picard, Weston-Super-Mare, England

‘The world spends three times as much on ice cream as it does on humanitarian aid.’ That’s the claim one listener spotted but is it true? We look at the stats behind the statement and ask whether it’s a useful comparison. We investigate the rise and rise of fake news online. Deliberately making up news stories to fool or entertain people is nothing new. But the arrival of social media has meant real and fictional stories are now presented in such a similar way, it can be increasingly difficult to tell the two apart. With 60% of US adults now getting some news from their Facebook feed, more and more of us are seeing and believing incorrect information. Are you sexist, racist or ageist? Even if you think you’re open-minded, the chances are, you’ll be judging people and situations without even realising. These hidden biases – which are different from conscious prejudice – lurk within our minds. And they can affect the way we behave, the decisions we make: whether it’s who we hire, who we promote or even – in the case of jurors – who we believe is guilty or not guilty. Do you have trouble getting an appointment to see your GP? If so, you are not alone. A Department of Health review from 2009 suggested that as many as 200,000 patients a day struggle to get a consultation with their doctor. And a quarter of those who want to book an appointment in advance simply can't. One Inside Health listener emailed us to ask why some surgeries seem to only release appointments on the day - a bit of a telephone lottery - and others do allow for some advance booking. Chair of the the Royal College of General Practitioners Dr Clare Gerada offers some insight. Monitoring patients in their own homes - telehealth - is one of the latest developments in general practice. The government hopes that the technology will help at least 2 million people over the next 5 years, saving the NHS more than a billion pounds. The £2,000 black boxes measure blood pressure, blood sugar levels and blood oxygen - information that's then sent over the internet to a medical professional. But the project to monitor patients with long term conditions like diabetes, heart failure and breathing difficulties hasn't got off to a good start and GP Margaret McCartney questions whether it will ever live up to the hype. The most seriously ill patients in hospital are looked after in Intensive Care - where they are given life-saving treatment and support with vital bodily functions like breathing. To help staff relieve anxiety - and enable staff to carry out procedures like inserting breathing tubes - patients are often sedated. Dr Chris Danbury from the Royal Berkshire hospital in Reading says it's important to get the level of sedation right - not too little and not too much. One consequence of the drugs and environment can be hallucinations and flashbacks - with some patients reporting dreams of being abducted by alien space ships. Specialist outreach nurses in Reading - like Sister Melanie Gager - are skilled at offering strategies to overcome this - including follow-up visits to the ICU for both patients and their families. Now that summer has finally arrived for most parts of the UK, if you are planning an outdoor swim then there may be hazards lurking in the water. Heavy downpours result in the release of sewage into the sea from overflow pipes - which can affect water quality for a couple of days. Inside Health reporter Anna Lacey met Pollution Control Manager Dr Robert Kierle on the banks of the river Axe in Weston-Super-Mare - and Surfers Against Sewage who are offering a free text service to alert would-be bathers about local measurements of any pollutants.
